About the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation
Through arts education, community arts and special projects, the Abu Dhabi Music &
Arts Foundation (ADMAF) has been nurturing creativity across the UAE since 1996.
For 19 years, ADMAF has been at the forefront of
the UAE’s not-for-profit arts sector, inspiring young
people and the general public and empowering
the artists of the country, the region and the world.
Under the presidency and patronage of HE Sheikh
Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, and with HE Hoda
Al Khamis-Kanoo at the helm, it inspires artistic
expression through a wide range of programmes
and projects. By bringing together audiences and
institutions it has helped embed arts and culture at
the heart of the nation.
Inspiring Learners
ADMAF Education fosters understanding and
appreciation for the arts among children and young
people. Its initiatives help to shape creative thinking,
spotlight emerging talent, and broaden horizons.
In the course of an academic year, on average
ADMAF delivers initiatives to schools and
universities across the UAE. The Foundation uses
every art form to add value to the formal curricula
and through a diverse range of lectures, workshops,
field trips, exhibitions, concerts, productions
and other initiatives, students receive ‘hands on’
experience that allows them to enhance their
academic performance, strengthen their creativity
and develop life skills essential for later life.

Empowering Leaders of Tomorrow
The arts are an effective tool in preparing
tomorrow’s workforce creatively. Using arts-based
tools and techniques, ADMAF helps to shape
the next generation through workshops that help
harness essential soft skills such as teamwork,
communication, problem solving and critical
thinking. From the texts of Shakespeare to the oral
traditions of the UAE, ADMAF is using the arts to
nurture the leaders of the future.
Within the nation’s ever growing media industry,
the Foundation’s Young Media Leaders initiative
takes an enthusiastic cohort of young nationals each
year and equips them with the skills and know-how
necessary to embark on a career in media. Soon,
another vocational development programme will
be launched focusing on nurturing the creative and
cultural entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
Engaging Society
ADMAF Community reaches out to the citizens
and residents across the UAE, providing access
to the arts for everyone, regardless of age, ability
or location. Each year, it works with community
groups and associations across the seven emirates
to bring people together and address important
issues such as health, welfare and the environment.
Through the creation of cross-cultural platforms
and by supporting traditions of dance, music and
storytelling as well as more contemporary forms of
expression, ADMAF seeks to empower the people
of the UAE so that they are able to uphold their
customs, preserve their traditions and share their
riches with the world.
Rewarding Excellence.
Every year, ADMAF’s roster of awards galvanises
the interest of young, talented citizens and residents,
encouraging them to innovate and create. The
awards turn the spotlight on outstanding individuals
in a wide range of artistic disciplines including the
visual and performing arts, literature and film.
Alongside its own productions and programmes, the
Foundation supports independent forms of cultural
expression across the UAE through its Grants
Scheme. By providing financial assistance as well
as skills, it enables people and groups to embark on
artistic and cultural projects that would otherwise not
be possible.
As the cultural sector of the UAE continues to
flourish, ADMAF is proof that not-for-profit
organisations have a major role to play in embedding
the arts in society, and in turn, nurturing creativity
and innovation.

Media Engagement
Arts journalism is developing across the Arab region
resulting in indepth coverage of visual arts, music and
the performing arts both in Arabic and English. Media
coverage pre and post performances help Abu Dhabi
Festival build audiences for the future.
The Festival therefore asks its artists to be available
for interviews before and during their visit to Abu
Dhabi. As a participating artist, you can make a
significant contribution to the ongoing development
of the region’s media and cultural sectors by engaging
with national and regional journalists; and in turn
joining us - the Festival - in building understanding
and appreciation among the emerging arts audiences
of the Arab world.
The Festival also hosts international media visitors
and receives international media coverage through a
variety of newspapers, magazines and TV.
Meeting the Artistic Director
Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder & Artistic Director
of the Abu Dhabi Festival, looks forward to meeting
you. Often, artists are invited to a private meeting
at Emirates Palace or at the family residence, time
permitting.
In addition, it is traditional that at the end of the
evening’s performance, Mrs Kanoo presents principal
artists and soloists with a gift - a token of appreciation
and gratitude. Each gift is unique; handwoven by the
women of Abu Dhabi. They exemplify the deeprooted traditions of the Emirate and leave you with a
thoughtful memento of your visit to the UAE. Artists
are encouraged to be available for the presentation
ceremony following their performance.
Background - Arts Education in the UAE
In a country that in 2014 will be just 43 years old,
audiences for the arts are still growing. ADMAF has
spent the last 17 years nurturing audiences and in
doing so, addressing social and cultural challenges
around participation and engagement with the arts.
Today, ADMAF delivers a year-round programme of
arts education initiatives for all ages, from toddlers to
graduates.
The majority of the expatriate population attends
fee-paying schools and universities. These follow a
syllabus from the USA or Europe, and therefore have
arts and music in their curricula. The provision and
quality of arts and music education for Emirati pupils
in public schools is steadily increasing. Also, national
universities are increasing their teaching of visual
and performing arts. Several schools and universities
have music clubs, but there are no accredited music
courses in universities at the moment.
Arts Education - Nurturing Future Audiences
During your visit to the Abu Dhabi Festival, we invite
you to join us in our arts education quest and inspire
the next generation of the UAE.
‘Back to School’ is an initiative that arranges visits
for artists to selected private and public schools and
universities. These can take any of the following
formats:
a) Mini-performance (40mins): A short introduction
followed by a performance for pupils.
b) Demonstration (40mins): An explanatory talk and
demonstration, followed by Q&A with pupils.
c) Masterclass (40mins): Directing a selected group
of pupils in a practical tutorial class.
d) Lecture (60mins): A presentation accompanied by
Powerpoint (moderated or otherwise) that delves into
the artist’s career and artistic approach.
‘Festival in Focus’ is a second initiative which enables
students to observe a rehearsal, with the permission
of the artist. Accompanied by their teachers, they
receive an introduction and a post-rehearsal Q&A
from Festival personnel. This experience gives them
unique insight into the artists’ preparatory process
and raises their understanding and appreciation of the
discipline, committment and complexity required by
music and the performing arts.
‘The Artists’ Studio’ is the third and final initiative.
Artists are invited to be speak on camera to an
Emirati trainee journalist and discuss (in English)
their career; the personal and professional challenges
they overcame; and the discipline and commitment it
takes to reach the top of their profession. Footage will
be turned into a 10-minute film which is uploaded
online to inspire the younger generation of the UAE
to improve their understanding of the arts industry.

Advice & Information
What To Wear
Lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of
the year. Be sure to take some sort of jacket or sweater
when visiting hotels, as the air conditioning can be
rather strong. Although attitudes are fairly liberal,
respect for local customs is much appreciated.
Ladies’ dresses and shirts should have sleeves to the
elbow or longer, and cleavage should be covered. For
more formal classical music concerts, women should
preferably not wear sandals or open-toed shoes.
For internal workshops, rehearsals and general
getting around: more casual clothing but preferably
not short skirts or shorts and tight-fitting clothing
(although you will see many non-local women
dressing in standard Western styles, so for women it
can be a matter of judgment and feeling comfortable)
- long shorts and T shirts are acceptable. We suggest a
light sweater, jacket or shawl for the evenings.
Dress Code: Men
For performances and public workshops: costume
