CELEBRATING “A Brush With Kindness”
Binkley members from age 14 to 70
enjoyed some cold weather, teamwork and
new neighbors this past Saturday, January
25. We all headed to the home of George
Thompson on Rogers Road to join forces
with George, his family and Habitat for
Humanity in a service project called “A
Brush With Kindness”. Instead of building a
house from scratch, we started making
improvements on an older home in need of repairs. George’s is the fourth house to
be spruced up on Rogers Rd. he was very grateful for all the helping hands who
surrounded his home with love and effort. The work team was able to stage the
work zone by off-loading lumber from a trailer, dig many deep holes, set posts,
hammer up joist hangers and complete most of the work on a small but sturdy
backyard deck. God blessed us with camaraderie and cooperation as we overcame
the 20 degree weather by staying busy.
On Saturday, February 1 we hope to complete the Kindness endeavor by doing
some painting and storm window maintenance. If you would like to attend a brief
dedication ceremony, head on over to 7707 Rogers Rd. at 12 noon on Saturday,
2/1. Bring a camera and congratulate George on his “Brushed Up” home. The
Binkley Outreach Committee is grateful to our church for supporting this ministry
in our community. The five thousand dollars we committed and the volunteer
coordination by Amy have done a lot to help us be neighborly in our community.
YOUTH GROUP EXPLORES RACIAL JUSTICE ISSUES
Thanks to the excellent leadership of Tessa Hale (youth leader) and the openminded presence of our youth, some new avenues of learning about Racial Justice
took place in our lounge over the past two Sunday nights. On January 19, Tessa
and the youth explored her own Haitian culture and Jordan Hale’s African American culture. The youth saw a variety of pictures that encouraged them to think and
ask questions about the variety of beautiful races in our midst.
On January 26, Tessa opened the program with a thought provoking video on the
influence of the Motown recording label on the worldwide music industry. They
learned about Berry Gordy’s revolutionary work as a writer, producer and promoter of music that encouraged and enabled change in the social fabric of the US
and the world. As they listened to some of the powerful Motown sounds they were
invited to share their thoughts on how today’s music can be a source for positive
social change.
Tessa was aided in her efforts by youth leaders Jordan Hale, Judy Sordean and
Mark Walters. We are all proud and pleased to work with the youth of Binkley and
the visitors they invite into our circle of Christian support. God is blessing us every
day with new learning and new insights.
STEWARDS of CHILDREN TRAINING
Parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, and advocates for children are invited to join Jeanine Gangloff,
February 23, 2-4 pm., in the Lounge, for an informative, practical workshop on how to prevent child sexual
abuse. We are blessed that our own Nursery Coordinator has been trained to lead this nationally
renowned program! Child care is available. Please contact Stephanie Ford at [email protected].
CONGRATULATIONS
Gwen Sherwood is to be given a Special Award for Outstanding Health Professional Educators for the
Prince Mahidol Award Conference 2014“Transformative Learning for Health Equity”. She will be one of
seven to receive this award, and the only nurse. Sponsors of the conference include the World Bank and the
Royal Family of Thailand. Gwen has played a major role in upgrading nursing education around the world,
but particularly in China, where she has been heavily involved for the past two decades. More recently, she
has been lecturing on Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) in the US, in Thailand and China and
other countries.
GROUNDS COMMITTEE NEWS
A letter was received recently from Meals on Wheels Executive Director, Stacy Yusko, addressed to our ministers and the Binkley community. It reads in part:
“A heartfelt thank you from all of us at Meals on Wheels for the recent improvements to the sidewalk
entrance to the church building. We are thrilled beyond words each time we roll our meals up on the dolly!
Our volunteers appreciate the safer walking surface and we think it looks pretty as well! You are an
extraordinarily generous church with a robust outreach focus and we have been the beneficiary of MANY
years. We don’t thank you often enough, so we wanted to take this opportunity to state it clearly. The support, concern and advocacy efforts that we receive from you are unparalleled. No other single congregation
does as much for the Meals on Wheels program as you do. ….Blessings to you all and a Happy 2014!”
(Note: The Meals on Wheels organization made a donation to the church to contribute toward the sidewalk
renovation. We are grateful for their support and presence in our church.)

A special thank you to Fred Schroeder for restaining
and sealing the labyrinth stand in the Courtyard. The
stand contains information about the history and use
of our unique Binkley labyrinth, and its maintenance
is important. Thanks, Fred!
A quick thank you form the Love Chapel Hill Team
for the donation of items. During the winter season it
