Welcome to AFCOOP's new Programming Coordinator Erin McDonald! Erin joined the AFCOOP team mid September and she will be assisting with the Fall Workshop series and
AFCOOP's new 'Directed by Women' program. This is a joint position with AFCOOP and WIFT-AT so you may
also see Erin answering emails related to WIFT-AT. Erin migrated to Nova Scotia from Toronto to attend
university at Dalhousie and the University of King's college. This past spring, she graduated with a Bachelor of
Arts degree with a Combined Honours in history and and contemporary studies. She is particularly interested in
the arts and so geared her degree towards anything art-related, taking as many courses at the Nova Scotia
College of Arts and Design as was permissible for her Dalhousie degree. Outside of school, her hobbies include
long distance running, web coding, playing music and working with celluloid film.

AFCOOP needs volunteers for our Fall Intro Series Workshops that run Tuesday evenings from October 6 to
November 24. The workshop volunteer duties include: getting to the workshop an hour early to set up, cleaning
up at the end of the workshop, and opening and closing the AFCOOP office door. The benefits are that the
volunteer takes the workshop for free and receives two documented AFCOOP volunteer hours (which can be
translated to AFCOOP dollars or go towards getting a full membership). Contact Erin at [email protected] for

AFCOOP's Writers' Perspective The Writers’ Perspective incorporates elements of discussion of screenwriting structure and conventions and
feedback on individual projects. This group is open to AFCOOP members and non-members alike and the

AFCOOP and Women in Film and Television – Atlantic (WIFT-AT) are pleased to announce a call for applications
for a new program called “Directed by Women.” This program will provide mentorship, professional
development and collaboration opportunities to emerging female filmmakers.
“Directed by Women” was created in response to the inequity that exists between the number of female verses
male directors of feature films in Nova Scotia. This gender imbalance is a national problem, but was particularly
apparent provincially during the past two years of the Atlantic Film Festival. Last year, there were only three
narrative feature films directed by women, one of which was from Nova Scotia (Andrea Dorfman). The year
before that, there was only one narrative feature on the entire bill that was directed by a woman (Gia Milani
from New Brunswick).
The factors that contribute to this gender disparity are complex but a few key pieces include access to capital,
access to mentorship and the ability to find collaborators. “Directed by Women” will address these factors
through a blend of classroom training and networking opportunities.
The program will provide eight women with training and mentorship from established female filmmakers on the
topics of screenwriting, directing, working with key crew, pitching and marketing. The focus of this workshop
series will be addressing the challenges inherent in transitioning from shorts to features. The final component of
the program and will include a ‘speed dating’ meet-and-greet with local producers at WIFT-AT’s annual Women
Making Waves conference in March 2016. AFCOOP and WIFT-AT’s goal with “Directed by Women” is to prepare eight emerging female filmmakers to
direct their own feature films. The program will start at the end of November and will be held on four weekends
throughout the winter until March, when participants will have the opportunity to attend WIFT-AT’s Women
Making Waves conference.

Eligibility Requirements: i) Must be emerging (completed at least one short film) to mid-career filmmakers,
ii) Must demonstrate a commitment to working professionally in the domain of narrative filmmaking

intent

FILM 5 Program Call for Applications
Nova Scotia’s elite training opportunity for emerging filmmakers
Deadline for Applications: Monday Oct. 5th 2015 5pm
The Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative invites emerging Nova Scotia filmmakers to apply to the FILM 5 Program
2015/16. FILM 5 is a professional development program for directors, screenwriters and producers culminating
in the opportunity to produce a short, five-minute film.
The deadline for applications is Monday Oct. 5th, 2015 at 5pm. The program begins in early November.
Application packages can be downloaded at on the FILM 5 page. Through the program, up to four teams (writer, director and producer) will be awarded cash and services to
produce a five-minute film. Participants will attend intensive workshops and receive mentorship from
professional filmmakers. Past FILM 5 instructors and mentors include director Deanne Foley (Relative
Happiness), producer Marc Almon (Blackbird) and director/writer Andrea Dorfman (Heartbeat).
To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Nova Scotia, have completed basic film training and demonstrate
a commitment to pursuing filmmaking at a professional level.

2. WORKSHOPS AFCOOP's Fall Workshops - Open for Registration
New this year - The Fall Intro Series Package
Our introductory filmmaking workshops are now open for registration. On Tuesday evenings from October 6 to
November 24, there will be eight workshops that are designed for beginner to intermediate level filmmakers.
You can sign up for individual workshops, or you can register for the entire eight workshop series for a
lower package rate. Workshops include introduction to filmmaking, screenwriting, directing, cinematography,
sound, lighting, editing and distribution. Each class will be instructed by a different industry professional who is
an expert in their respective field.
Full Eight Weeks: $240/330 (AFCOOP members / non-members)
Individual Workshops: $40/50 (AFCOOP members / non-members)

“I have an idea for a movie. Where do I start?” This is a great workshop for those new to filmmaking or new to
filmmaking in the region. The instructor will walk the class through the various stages of the production
process. Topics such as choice of medium, shooting style, and the availability of resources in the Maritime
region will be discussed at length. Come with questions and a readiness to connect with other filmmakers.

Workshop 2: Introduction to Screenwriting Instructor: Iain MacLeod Tuesday, October 13, 6:00PM - 9:00PM
This workshop covers the art and craft of screenwriting for participants with minimal or no previous experience
in creative writing for film. Topics covered include: screenplay format, plot structure, theme, dialogue and
character development. Participants are welcome to bring an idea for a short film to share with the class if time

This workshop will explore the basics cornerstones of directing and how to prepare yourself to direct your own
film. Open to all but aimed at the beginning filmmaker, the workshop will look at vision building, rehearsals, the
casting process, shotlisting, and other tools of directing for film.

The cinematographer has a unique role on set, one that is both artistic and technical. In this workshop you will
explore how approaches to lighting and camera come together in communicating feelings, ideas and story
telling.

Learn the basics of location sound recording, mixing and boom operation. An overview of AFCOOP’s location
sound equipment will be given and you will participate in some recording practices during this hands-on day
Workshop 6: Intro to Lighting Instructor: TBA Tuesday, November 10, 6:00PM - 9:00PM
This is an introduction to the basic concepts and techniques behind studio lighting. The workshop will go over
how and when to use different modifiers like umbrellas, softboxes, and reflectors. It will also include discussion
on basic effective light placement and methodology.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to approach editing, tackle workflow and learn the basic theory behind picture
editing.

Participants will learn about distribution, dissemination and marketing for short films through social media, film

In partnership with the Artists Legal Information Society (ALIS) Alayna Kolodziechuk will present a talk on the
implications of found-footage, footage in the public domain and general copyright issues related to aspiring
filmmakers. Alayna R. Kolodziechuk is a lawyer providing customized legal services and plain-language advice to many
small businesses and start-ups, including artists and designers across a variety of disciplines. Alayna is a
sessional lecturer at Dalhousie University (Introduction to Business Law). She is also frequently invited to
guest lecture at educational institutions and by industry associations on topics such as copyright, contracts,

completed script, it is strongly advised that you come with a clear concept of the project you intend to develop

ALTERED STATES: Transformation in Science Fiction Films - Wednesday Series

Aristotle states, famously, in his Poetics, that “Characters must change”. In Science Fiction, sometimes
everything changes. In this film program we look at a series of transformations, from Fritz Lang’s memorable
1927 film Metropolis to two recent adaptations of stories by the maverick Sci-Fi author Philip K. Dick: Minority
Report and A Scanner Darkly. Whether it is humans changing into vegetables—as in Invasion of the Body
Snatchers—or particles changing into dangerously unstable elements—as in The Magnetic Monster, which
climaxes in Nova Scotia—change is constant in Science Fiction, just as it is in technology and identity today.

Canadian Art Therapy Association to hold Conference for the first time in Halifax, NS Oct. 16- 18th, 2015 www.CanadianArtTherapy.org The Canadian Art Therapy Association is glad to announce that their 36th annual conference will be held at the
Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia from October 16-18, 2015.
The conference will inform participants about how art therapy can enhance Resilience and support Recovery

The St. John's International Women's Film Festival (SJIWFF)
October 20-24th, 2015
The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival (SJIWFF) is one of the longest running women’s film
festivals in the world.
Established in 1989 to support and promote women filmmakers, SJIWFF produces several screenings,
workshops and other events throughout the year, culminating in a five day film festival held in October in St.
John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. These dynamic events attract over 4,000 participants. Every year

AFCOOP Filmmaking Grants AFCOOP’s filmmaking grants support the production of local independent films through in-kind equipment and
resources. There are grants that are open to the public as well as some that are only open to AFCOOP Full
Members.
There are two deadlines per year - August 1st and December 1st
The First Thing Supplies and training to make your first film including:
$500 in-kind gear and facilities (valued at commercial rates)
"Intro to Filmmaking in Nova Scotia" workshop
2 x workshops of your choice
Associate Membership
3 x 1hr meetings with an AFCOOP mentor
For: Beginner filmmaker with little to no filmmaking experience. Up to 2 per deadline.
Feedback Loop A chance to get feedback about your project for your choice of expert. The grant includes:
3 x 1hr mentorship meetings with your choice of an experienced screenwriter, director, producer, editor
or cinematographer.
These meetings are meant for you to gain feedback on your project. Mentors will be selected from senior
AFCOOP members and the community based on the nature of your project.

Celluloid Creation Grant The Celluloid Creation Grant provides you with resources and support to make a film-based project shot or
finished (or both!) on Super-8, 16mm or 35mm film.
The grant includes:
$2,000 in kind equipment(film cameras, lights, etc. valued at commercial rates)
$250 cash towards film stock,processing, shipping and transfer
Up to 3000ft of film from the AFCOOP film freezer (35mm, 16mm) (colour or b&w) based on availability

Independent Filmmakers Grant The Independent Filmmakers Grant provides equipment and resources to make a digital-based project.
The grant includes:
$2,000 in kind equipment rental (C300 camera, sound recording equipment, lighting etc. valued at
commercial rates)
$250 cash towards your production costs (crew, cast, art dept. food, etc.)
For: AFCOOP Full Members. Equipment must be used by a qualified operator. In order to be cleared on this gear you (or you operator) need
to have either taken a workshop on it or prove your competency to the Technical Coordinator in advance of
your booking.
Post-Production Grant AFCOOP has a full service post-production suite. This is your chance to use it for your next project.
Includes:
2 weeks unlimited access to AFCOOP’s media suite (Final Cut Studio 7, AVID Symphony, Adobe CS6 and
Pro Tools).
Booking is for consecutive weeks (with some flexibility)

A Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent, was created in 1984 concurrent with the launch of MuchMusic, which
committed a percentage of its gross annual revenues to stimulate the production of new Canadian music
videos. Two years later, when MusiquePlus went on the air, it also became a sponsor, as did MuchMoreMusic
when it launched in 1998. The launch of MuchMore (formerly known as MuchMoreMusic) also marked the
creation of PromoFACT, an Electronic Press Kit and website production fund for Canadian artists, independent
record labels and artist management companies. MuchFACT is now funded entirely by MuchMusic and MuchMore (formerly MuchMoreMusic). Originally named

2016 Mayworks Halifax Festival - Call for submissions

Mayworks Halifax is a multi-disciplinary arts festival open to the general public. It aims to help build a culture
and society that celebrates and recognizes the history and struggle of the working people of Nova Scotia. The
annual festival spans a period of time before and after May 1st of every year, the internationally recognized
Worker's Day, and serves as an extended celebration of the day's significance to all workers and those seeking
justice.
Submissions need not be directly focused on work, labour or unions. Mayworks Halifax programs works of art
that address broad themes of social and environmental justice. Any submissions that address issues of
inequality and injustice, or give voice to marginalized communities will be considered. Under-represented
groups and those disadvantaged at work and in society are particularly encouraged to apply.
Mayworks Halifax programming is not limited to any medium for artistic expression. The festival has
programmed works of music, theatre, cinema, printmaking, painting, photography, literature, spoken word and

Aryen Hoekstra to start his Fieldwork Residency this October
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Originating in the formal and conceptual language of the moving-image, Aryen Hoekstra's practice hybridizes
projection, photography, sculpture, video, and drawing, through which polyphonic exhibitions emerge.
Developing in relation to specific historical events and conditions, his work interrogates the remains of the last
century’s ideological projections in an attempt to locate modernity’s enduring spectre. His most recent projects
consider our planet's looming ecological catastrophe, which modern ideological projections have shown

themselves incapable of confronting. Through this investigation he speculates on what future conditions might
be produced when Earth is considered not in correlation to human beings, but as an object in excess of
humankind. Hoekstra is the co-founder of Garden Avenue, a summer-long exhibition project that occurred monthly in his
shared backyard through the summer of 2015. Recent exhibition venues include, Mercer Union, Scotiabank Nuit
Blanche, Gallery 44, Xpace Cultural Centre, Olga Korper Gallery (all Toronto, ON), the Art Gallery of Alberta
(Edmonton, AB), and Blackwood Gallery (Mississauga, ON). Upcoming projects include solo exhibitions at 8-11
(Toronto, ON), 180 Projects (Sault Ste. Marie), and CPI (Edmonton, AB), a group exhibition curated by Kevin
Rodgers at Modern Fuel (Kingston, ON), and a collaborative exhibition with Jen Aitken next spring at Forest City
Gallery (London, ON). His writing on contemporary art has appeared in C Magazine, Border Crossings, Magenta
Magazine, and Towards Magazine. Since spring 2014 Hoekstra has served as the Director of G Gallery in
Toronto, ON.
ABOUT FIELDWORK
Fieldwork is a platform for artists to conduct and present research as it relates to their practice in a setting
outside of an exhibitionary complex. Initiated by Wes Johnston in 2013, this is the second iteration of the
project. Fieldwork aligns with Eyelevel Gallery's itinerant programming model, prioritizing practice over
professionalism, and providing multiple access points to contemporary art.
