These are the words that reflect the essence of our federation. We are a commonwealth of athletes supporting fellow athletes, coaches giving their all to their gymnasts, judges encouraging our competitors, volunteers giving their time to our clubs and events, and clubs providing safe and healthy environments for all. Throughout the year, we all hear the stories that make us so proud to be part of the gymnastics community of Ontario. From the young child who can be heard saying “Coach, I did it!!” to the pride of our competitors standing on the world stage, we all share a common love and commitment to our sport. We are touched by the stories brought to our attention throughout the year of clubs sponsoring children in need and of clubs helping other clubs whose facilities are under repair. We hear of coaches and judges who show up each day with a smile on their face, even though they are managing personal sorrows at home. And through it all, every member of our great federation is there to step forward and say “How can I help?” This is what makes our federation the best that there is! On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Gymnastics Ontario, we congratulate all of our members on a very successful year, and look forward to an exciting year ahead. They believe in the benefit of a sound governing body who can lead members into better business practices and help to offer sustainable choices to club owners and presidents. Over the past year, the Board has been working diligently on Policy and Procedure Revisions, an overhaul of the financial reporting system and the continued formation of new committees and working groups OUR STAFF The Expertise The Gymnastics Ontario staff are the employees tasked with the vital role of liaising between many different groups in the gymnastics community. From GCG, the Board to the community at large; the staff are continually and feverishly compiling the knowledge and expertise of each group into consistent and viable success options for Gymnastics Ontario. This past season the staff have been functioning in lead roles on the Canadian Sport for Life Development Project, the High Five Quality Assurance reports, the delivery of over 30 competitions and well over 40 training camps. The staff contribution to the sport is both paramount to its success and vital to the continuation of realizing our strategic plans. OUR COMMITTEES The Knowledge & Experience The Technical Committees and Working Groups within Gymnastics Ontario have proven their continued indispensability in advancing and enhancing the programs and services offered by Gymnastics Ontario. Their dedication is almost moot as they continually strive for success in the wake of all obstacles in their path. Their participation in undertaking a variety of projects this past year has been paramount to the former successes. The Women’s Artistic Technical Committee deserves itself a special recognition from this previous season as they were faced with continuing their efforts to establish a continuation of the many successes from the late Dr. Gene Sutton. They have strived diligently to ensure that the Women’s Program is able to maintain itself as a leader in so many areas of our sport. 4 Our People The Heart Volunteers. They are passionate, dedicated, positive, and selfless people who will likely never be given all the gratitude that they truly deserve. Their involvement is truly essential in the success of all we do and spans all areas of our business. The Commitment Each club strives to achieve an excellence that is defined by its successes. In comparing with the big business of ‘Sport’ our clubs consistently involve themselves in their communities, promoting both health and recreation. Some strive to create champion athletes, but all clubs strive to achieve improved physical prowess for its members. Gymnastics is a foundation sport and we are continually impressed by our member clubs’ commitment to spreading the message of gymnastics to their communities, friends and family. Our clubs understand that gymnastics is a business, a healthy activity and a lifestyle like no other. The Passion OUR VOLUNTEERS OUR CLUBS OUR COACHES & JUDGES The coaches and judges within gymnastics are essential to the sport’s survival. They represent development in the sport through mentoring, coaching and producing our future. Leadership qualities can be seen in each and every one of them that are comparable only to the best in their business. Our athletes, in each discipline, are so lucky to have them stand behind them with support in every aspect of their gymnastic lives. Coaches and judges create bonds with athletes built on the foundation of a love for gymnastics that is continued throughout their lives. They are the professionals who enable our sport to continue to thrive. The Purpose “A 7 hour 11 minute spacewalk – the ultimate gymnastics routine”, Steve MacLean, Canadian astronaut and first gymnast to walk in space. Sport Starts Here... and can take you anywhere. Our athletes truly understand the value of gymnastics and what it does to develop them into positive and healthy people. With a solid long term approach to the development of this discipline that focuses on a ‘grass roots’ approach that builds from the bottom up we are seeing a smooth and manageable build of enthusiasm, interest and participation in Acrobatic Gymnastics. Resources As of yet the Gymnastics Canada resources for Acrobatic Gymnastics are still to be completed, however, through collaboration with Gymnastics Canada’s Acrobatic Gymnastics Program Advisor , Don Holmes, a federal system that is similar to the USA system is being created. Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia have all been using the USA system as a starting point for acrobatics. Gymnastics Canada sees the benefit of creating a system that is a Canadian extension of this program in order to facilitate the development of acrobatic gymnastics resources for those clubs who have already taken the initiative to offer acrobatics. With full support and permission from USA Gymnastics the clubs in Ontario have taken the year to get acquainted with the USA Acro system and participated in two important stepping stone events: The USA National Team Training Camp at Karolyi’s Ranch in Texas and a regional, low level Acrobatic Gymnastics competition in Baltimore, Maryland. Acrobatics Working Group Don Holmes (Chair) Jeff Coulter Michelle Hamer Dave Harris Training Camps The acrobatic working group offered two training camps: one in Windsor, hosted by Windsor Vistas Club and one at Gymnastics Mississauga. The first training camp was for beginners and introduced the elements of routine development. Offering the training camp in Windsor was done in an attempt to expose another part of the province to acrobatics. The second training camp focused on higher level skills, artistic development and routine creation. Gymnastics Canada facilitated the inclusion of Cirque du Soleil’s clinicians for both artistry and technical acrobatic instruction. The training camp was well received and had over 60 participants making it the largest acrobatic gymnastics event to be held in Canada to date. The clinicians, Kaitlan Maggs, Head of Artistic Training at CDS and Alexey Karulin, Head Coach of Acrobatic Gymnastics Coaching at CDS were absolutely fantastic at working with the diverse level of athletes that attend the camp and were superb in teaching the coaches how to develop a more technically and artistically sound routine. Niki Rowland Richard Tyo Shelley Frappier (staff rep) Acrobatics Gala In May we held our second Acrobatics Gala. This was an opportunity for groups who were doing acrobatics and those who attended the training camps, to showcase their skills. It took place in Oakville Gymnastics Club and included performances by top Artistic Gymnastics, Tumblers, Acro Dance Performers and the leading Acrobatic Gymnastics groups in Ontario. The Gala had over two hundred spectators and was a huge success. The Gala acted as a precursor to the development of Acrobatic Gymnastics competitions slated to begin in the 2011/2012 season. Competition Participation by Ontario Clubs Gymnastics Ontario Acrobats participated in two competitions in the 2010/2011 season. The Oakville Gymnastics Club took a level 11 to 16 years, Men’s Four to the World Age Group Championships as part of team Canada in Wroclaw, Poland. The July competition was formidable but the men’s four delivered noteworthy routines. The men’s four category usually has the lowest number of registrants and by having Canada participate we were able to ensure that medals were given out in all age group categories at the championships which garnered the Canadian team a mention on the FIG website and an invitation for one of our boys to read the athlete’s oath during the opening ceremonies. Participation in this high level competition provided the boost to the athletes and coaches that was needed in order for them to strive for excellence as they work at the club level. In March, Gymnastics Mississauga and Oakville Gymnastics Club took their athletes to a regional competition in Baltimore, Maryland not only to compete but to learn how to host a simple low level acrobatics competition. The host club and organizers were more than helpful and will be great resources for us of the next year as we deliver our first competitions in Ontario. Summary It was a very successful season for Acrobatics this year. The participation and enthusiasm that we saw this year is very encouraging. We will continue to build on this momentum to encourage the growth of Acrobatics as a discipline and give more opportunities to Gymnastics Clubs, Coaches and Athletes in Ontario. 7 Aerobics Athlete Performance Aerobics Working Group Lynne Smiley Holly Abraham Louise Miller FIG World Series & ANAC Aerobic Gymnastics Championship was held in July at Red Rock Resort, Las Vegas and gave Kasey Whalen (Age Group 1 Athlete) her first opportunity to gain international experience. Seventeen countries participated. Pan Am Championships (Brazil) were held in November 2010. Age Group 1 (Kasey Whalen, Andrea Reith, Katrina Wright) and Age Group 2 (Kailey Sweeney and Allison Tolgyesi) competed and all placed in the top 10 of their categories with 2 advancing to the finals. Good showing for Canada at major international competition. Washington DC Aerobic Gymnastics Invitational Meet was held in April and nine aerobic gymnastics from the Perth Saltos Athletic Club participated. International Aerobic Gymnastics Championships were held in July. Ontario athletes placed 4th in the Inaugural Aerobic Dance event. Under the leadership of Head Coach, Louise Miller (FIG Level 2 Academy Coach), the Perth Saltos continue to gain competitive experience and a well-respected reputation internationally. The AG Technical Committee has continued its main focus in grass roots development and education. An Introductory Aerobic Gymnastics Workshop was held for Recreational Level coaches and gymnasts. Twenty recreational/provincial coaches and 18 recreational/provincial athletes were in attendance. This workshop introduced the Aero-Gym Fitness Manual and Stage 1 of the Can Gym Aerobics Assessment. On January 8, 2011 the Burlington Gym Club hosting the OCP 2-4 Training Camp. The training camp opened with an Aerobics Warm Up. Zumba was offered as another Aerobic activity and both high energy cardio workouts were enthusiastically enjoyed by all participants. At the Toronto District School Board PE Conference, 25 teachers attended the activity session “aero-Gym—An Innovative Approach to Fitness, Dance DPA & Gymnastics in the Curriculum”. All teachers found the aero-Gym movement competencies/style an adaptable and comfortable approach useful in teaching a variety of PE activities, especially Dance. Coach Development The AGG Committee (a GCG Working Group) is currently finalizing work on NCCP Foundations for Aerobics & Facilitator Guide. Two sessions were piloted in 2010-2011 . Much work has been done at the grass roots level with the completion of the Aero-Gym Fitness Manual designed for introducing Aerobic Gymnastics into existing Recreational programs and continued education for clubs and schools about the discipline. There appears to be growing interest in the sport especially with the introduction of the new event “Aerobic Dance”. 8 Men’s Artistic The Men’s Artistic Program of Gymnastics Ontario had a very successful year due to the dedication and hard work of the entire community. Athlete Performance This year has been a very solid year of growth in Ontario as we have seen continual progress in the development of Men’s Gymnastics. This year we had 175 registered Interclub athletes, 241 Provincial Level athletes and 68 High Performance and National Level athletes. This indicated an increase in the numbers for our Provincial Level athletes and a slight increase in the numbers of our National and High Performance Level Athletes for the second consecutive year. We had a very successful Canadian Championships in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The Ontario team took 38% of the medals with Ontario taking the Silver in the Youth and Gold in the Open Team Competitions. There were many highlights including Samuel Zakutney placing first overall in the Argo Category, Cory Paterson taking first overall in the Tyro High Performance category and Nicholas Mallia was first overall in the National Open category. Ontario won the High Performance Team Award and won exactly 50% of all the Golds awarded. We were successful at Elite Canada as well, with 28% of the medals going to Ontario. Samuel Zakutney of National Capital was awarded the All-Around Gold in the Argo category, while Anthony Tawfik of Futures placed second, Casey Sandy of Gymnastics Mississauga was second AllAround in the Senior category and Simon Porter was third All-Around in the Junior category. Ontario was also successful at Eastern Championships. Ontario took first in the team competitions in the Level 3 (under 13), Level 4 (13+). Ontario’s athletes were awarded 40% of the medals. Our National Tour went to Cancun, Mexico for the Cancun Classic in January, where they competed with teams from Mexico, USA, Quebec and Ontario’s Canada Winter Games team. After their training camp in Mexico, the Ontario CWG team won the Team Bronze at the Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Simon Porter became the first Ontario gymnast to win the All-around Gold since Rob Doyle in 1991, twenty years ago. He also won 2 Bronzes as well as a Gold on Rings. Nicholas Mallia brought home a Silver medal on Parallel Bars. Athlete/Coach Development Three training camps were held this year; Provincial Training Camps in Ottawa, Burlington and Toronto with 114 Provincial Level athletes and 27 coaches participating. Technical advisor Dave Arnold played a critical role in the success of these camps. The Enhancement Advantage training camps were conceived to contribute to the motivation, experience and development of Ontario’s Argo High Performance athletes. These training camps at Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Pennsylvania and Universal Gymnastics in Miami, Florida proved to be very effective in achieving these goals. We held a Pre-National Training Camp in May at Gold Medal Gymnastics. This was important for our teams going to Canadian Championships in that it allowed the athletes some valuable experience in training on Gymnova equipment. We brought in judges to critique our athletes and give them suggestions on how to improve their routines. It also allowed the team coaches to become familiar with their teams before the events. Judges Development The beginner Judge’s course and maintenance Judge’s course were combined and conducted in the Sport Ontario building by Judging Coordinator Nick Bejenaru. Much of this year’s success lies in the hard work and dedication of the members of the Men’s Technical Committee in the ongoing development of the Provincial Level rules and regulations. We are looking forward to even greater progress next year. 9 Men’s Artistic Committee Greg Jackson (Chair) Jason Lang Ryan Fleury Nick Bejenaru Jason Haid Wendy Porter Norm Loader Rhythmic Rhythmic Committee Gail Whittemore (Chair) Julia Assadoullaev Maria Busato Svetlana Joukova Tiina Korjus Rosanna Ruppert Breanna Rich Danuta Smiechowski Polina Tzankova Margaret Wichrowska Ilinca Nita-Saguna (staff rep) The 2010-2011 season has been exciting for Rhythmic Gymnastics in Ontario – there have been many events, competitions at all levels, training camps, education courses and clinics for coaches and judges. Thank you to all who contributed to improving the gymnastics experience for athletes, coaches, judges, administrators, and volunteers. Similar to last season, over 400 Rhythmic gymnasts in various levels of; Interclub, Provincial and National streams (Individual and Group Programs) participated in competitions, training camps and clinics. Also, 184 Aesthetic Group Gymnastics athletes have attended various competitions. Our AGG program continues to be one of the best established programs in the country and our teams have represented Canada at the International level. This year the top Canadian AGG team placed 9th at the World Championships in Estonia. Athlete Development Our talented National level athletes continue to represent Ontario and Canada at various prestigious National and International events. Ontario’s individual senior athletes, Alexandra Martincek and Mariam Chamilova represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India where they won the silver medal for the team event. This year 37 of our athletes successfully qualified to represent Ontario at the National Championships. In addition to the team bringing home the perpetual Tamara Bompa trophy, the following athletes captured the Novice, Junior and Senior National Championship titles; Katherine Uchida, Patricia Bezzoubenko and Mariam Chamilova. Also, GCG Athletes of the Year titles were awarded to Mariam Chamilova and Patricia Bezzoubenko. Their coach Svetlana Joukova was honored with the GCG Coach of the Year award. Our Group Development program continues to stress the importance of increasing group skills for younger athletes with hopes of preparing for future World and Olympic level competitions. Our Senior Group had a very successful season, winning the Pan American Championships title. The event was held in Guadalajara, Mexico where the Pan American Games will be held in October 2011. Now they are training towards the upcoming World Championships taking place in the south of France where they will be representing Canada and hoping to qualify to the 2012 Olympic Games. Also, the National Junior Group represented Canada at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. They successfully captured the bronze medal and were also nominated along with their coach, Svetlana Joukova for Ontario Sport Awards. Our provincial stream athletes have been busy competing at Provincial Qualifying competitions, Provincial Championships and also Eastern Regionals. They continue to improve and progress in the beautiful sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics. The annual Red Ribbon competition continues to be the largest competition in Canada for AGG Interclub, Provincial and International Level groups. This year there were approximately 150 athletes who participated in the competition. The Rising Stars program also continues on to successfully support long term athlete development. Our Rising Stars Athletes have participated at the Las Vegas and Montreal International Invitational events where, they produced exceptional results. The trips provided the Junior and Novice Rising Stars teams with critical experience and preparation towards competing at International events in the future. Coaching Development Our Provincial Technical Advisor- Teresa Orr continues to provide guidance and educational opportunities for Ontario coaches as part of her portfolio. In late November we hosted our annual clinic for coaches and judges. Ontario’s Provincial Judging Chair, Danuta Smiechowski and Brevet judge, Tamara Bompa provided important information on the Judging Rules and Regulations and updates on the Code of Points. This season we also have seen an increase in participation in the RG foundations courses as retired athletes have shown keen interest in coaching. Official Development In February, Ontario hosted a Beginners Level Judging course. Ontario Brevet judges and Judging Chairs, Polina Tzankova and Danuta Smiechowski instructed the course which concluded with 5 fully certified club level judges. These young judges have then participated at various invitationals and are continuing to gain experience. Ontario judges were active on the International and National scene with 4 judges attending Elite Canada, and 4 judges representing Ontario at the Canadian Individual Championships. Our Brevet judges have also attended various International competitions. Currently Ontario is proud to have 9 Brevet status judges. 10 Women’s Artistic Women’s Artistic Gymnastics The women’s artistic program continues to boast the largest registration numbers of all the disciplines. Over 1,000 athletes and 89 clubs participated in the Provincial Qualifying system. Clubs had the opportunity to select three of 12 qualifying competitions which culminated with two Provincial Championships in April, hosted by Niagara Acro Cats and Rose City Windsor. Ontario hosted just under 50 invitational and ODP meets and over 3,000 athletes competed in the ODP/OCP Level 2 to 4 streams. Finally, the Women’s program had 112 National and High Performance stream athletes compete at various competitions in the 2010/2011 season. Athlete Development – The annual Tour Selection competition was held in November for athletes 13 years and older to represent Ontario at the Chicago Style Invitational in Chicago, Illinois; the largest invitational competition in the world. Thirty two athletes, eight team coaches, and manager Michelle Pothier were selected to attend this exciting competition. In addition to the competition, the team attended a NCAA college meet featuring UCLA, Stanford and Oregon State. The girls were excited to cheer on former team Ontario athletes like Kristina Vaculik, Alyssa Brown, Leslie Mak and Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs. Team Ontario took home the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games held in Halifax, February 11-27, 2011. The team comprised of Elise Bolger, Silvia Colussi Pelaez, Gabriella Douglas, Mikaela Gerber, Sabrina Gill, Jordyn Pederson and Krishna Yemany outscored second place team Quebec by over five points. Colussi Pelaez and Gill tied for first place All Around, totaling four gold medals won by Team Ontario out of a possible six. Women’s Artistic Committee David Brubaker Kathy Hubbard Dawn Izzard Kelly Manjak Lorraine Currie Kathleen van Graft Cheryl Donoghue Diane Deslippe Cristina BontasTantaru Dana Reynolds These seven athletes, plus three others, had the opportunity shortly before the games to travel (staff rep) to Cancun, Mexico to compete in the Cancun Classic. This competition was used in part to decide the final Canada Winter Games team. The girls enjoyed a full week of training and competition in a world class facility, plus a full day exploring water park, Xel-Ha. Team Ontario athletes Dominique Pegg, Jessica Savona and Kristina Vaculik travelled to Rotterdam, Holland to compete for Canada at the 2010 World Championships; team Canada finished 14 th. Finally, Team Ontario athletes Victoria Moors and Christine Lee won both the Junior and Senior All Around titles, respectively, at Elite Canada held in Gatineau, December 10-12, 2010. Coaching Development – The highlight of this past season were our Enhancement Advantage camps; a great development opportunity for athletes and coaches alike. Novice and Pre-Novice athletes and their respective coaches were chosen to be part of this group based on their previous season’s results. Teams representing Ontario travelled to Woodward, Pennsylvania and the Karolyi Ranch in Texas, America’s national team training center. Junior coaches Sarah Ritskes of Corona Nepean and Shannon Dawe of Niagara Acro Cats found this to be a valuable learning experience. In conjunction with the Canuck Cup held at Futures Gymnastics, Mihai Brestyn, coach of world champion Alicia Sacramone, conducted a vaulting and strength clinic. Mr. Brestyn was very well-received and much lauded by all who attended. Officials Development – The women’s artistic judging sub-committee continues to be one of the most active groups in the federation; they were busy last season managing yearly clinics for over 100 women’s artistic judges and 66 ODP assessors. Professional development opportunities were extended to several judges, including Lorraine Currie who travelled as part of Team Ontario to Cancun, Mexico. The judges continue to act as a resource for coaches visiting many gyms to evaluate routines and provide suggestions for improving their composition. 11 Trampoline and Tumbling Trampoline & Tumbling Committee Dave Sandford (Chair) Sandra Floyd Graeme Huffman Lindsay Kerrigan Heather Smiley Denis Vachon Marty Myers Dave Sandford (staff rep) In 2010-2011 Ontario adapted new scoring software for Trampoline & Tumbling, in addition to this there was the introduction of ‘a Time of Flight’ score being added to the athlete’s total score. This required the installation of hardware on the trampolines and the monitoring of the times by a judge. As with all new technology there were some bugs that needed to be worked out. Both caused delays in results and many challenges for host clubs that everyone managed to work through with patience and understanding. There were four Ontario Cup qualifying events for the provincial athletes and three for the national athletes. Thank you to Burlington B.G.’s for hosting two competitions, Scarborough Gym Elites, Club de Gymnastiques Les Sittelles, Futures Gymnastics, Barrie Kempettes Gymnastics and Etobicoke Gymnastics for their hospitality and efforts! Our host club for the 2011 Ontario Championships was Oakville Gymnastics. This event capped off a successful season and was a tremendous success for all participants. There were five training camps in 2010-2011, the first was at Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania with the WAG and MAG disciplines. This event was subsidized with a grant from the province. The tumbling training camp was held in conjunction with last year’s ‘Coaching Congress’ and was well received by coaches in all disciplines. Kalon Ludvigson, USA National Team Member, was the main clinician for this camp. The following day he would then attend the provincial training camp in Alliston. There were two training camps for trampoline, the first was hosted by Just Bounce Trampoline for Provincial C athletes that was a huge success. The next was independently organized by Skyriders Trampoline for national level athletes and coaches. Ontario athletes performed well at both Eastern Canadian Championships in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and Canadian Championship in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Over 40 different clubs helped to make these courses run smoothly by offering their facilities to host NCCP courses. We would like to thank all the clubs who helped to make these courses successful by hosting an NCCP course. This year Gymnastics Ontario reinvested over $18,000 back into member clubs who hosted NCCP courses through rental fees, complimentary participant registrations and profit sharing. Gymnastics Ontario continues to work with the outlying areas of Ontario to organize NCCP courses. We appreciate and understand the challenges of these areas and are constantly trying to come up with unique and cost effective ways to offer as many courses as are required. We are re-investing in coaching through our annual “Coaching for Coaches” conference and new initiatives for coach retention and education through the Education Committee Advisory Group. The group met four times over the past year to provide feedback and suggestions regarding coaching education. We would like to thank members of the committee for the time, dedication and support they have given this group. Foundations Program Foundations Program is continuing to be a tremendous success. With over 115 Foundations Courses, over 1000 coaches participated in Foundations Artistic, Trampoline and Rhythmic disciplines. In June, 2011 we have hosted the first Active Start course which brought together over 20 coaches from various regions in Ontario. We would like to thank all the Learning Facilitators for their time and commitment in preparing and delivering the courses. 14 Coach Education 15 Marketing, Promotion & Partnerships Business Development Committee Stephen David (Board rep & Chair) Lorraine Currie Marie Kerrigan Linda Massel Wendy Porter Morgan Power Jean Winter Gymnastics Ontario continually strives to achieve visibility in many aspects within and outside of our community. Throughout the event the Gymnastics Ontario Staff was able to interact with over 200 participants bringing a new and fresh look to the ‘gymnastics’ experience. Rhythmic Gymnastics has also produced exciting new opportunities to promote our sport to other industries. Staff has worked diligently with Commonwealth medalist Alexandra Martincek over this past year developing a routine which will be featured at the opening of the White Cashmere Collection fashion show which is inspired by the courage and strength of women affected by breast cancer and fundraises for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The partnerships Gymnastics Ontario establishes are continually proving essential to providing our continued quality products and services to our members. We would like to sincerely thank each of the following sponsors and partners for their continued support of our organization; E.C. Gold, Champion, Northern Athletics Inc., SA Sport, GYMagic, HTG Sport Services, Bruce Travel, LaMontagne Chocolate Inc., Pearson Dunn Insurance Inc., 3 rd Level Consulting, Parks and Recreation Ontario, Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique and finally the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport. Participants were tasked with exploring their risk management and quality assurance measures and practices being implemented by their organizations within five types of programming: aquatics, camps, before and after school, competitive, and child care. As a follow up to the Forums and its Report a survey was conducted with more than 130 Organizations. The survey and its results is not to define the legal standard of care required within sport and recreation organizations, but to provide information to assist organizations as to the various trends in the marketplace. Recreation and sport organizations have a greater responsibility towards their participants than ever before, and today’s sport and recreation service provider needs to be well equipped with knowledge as to what others in the sector are doing in order to improve quality and risk management. The survey results are meant to provoke thought within your organization, and to provide a lens through which you can compare your organization to others within the sport and recreation sector. It is a tool to assist your organization to evaluate potential situations, decide which situations or circumstances might pose serious risk to your organization and its participants, and then determine what practical steps you can take to ensure maximization of the child’s experience. Gymnastics Ontario played a partner role on this project led by Parks and Recreation Ontario. Sport Priority Funding The goal of the Enhanced Excellence program was to expand the pool of talented Ontario athletes and teams and enhance the ability of athletes within the province to compete and succeed at the national level. The Enhancement Advantage program had a hugely positive impact on our organization. Athletes in Rhythmic, Men’s, Women’s and Trampoline were able to access high quality facilities and renowned coaches. The growth potential that gymnasts have by training in larger and more quantifiably elite venues proves very substantial. Participants used a variety of elite level facilities and coaches in strengthening their ability for podium success. Rhythmic athletes traveled to an elite level facility in Mirabela Spain. Women’s, Men’s and Trampoline travelled to North America’s most renowned camp, Woodward in Woodward, PA. The Women’s team was also given an experience to travel with the USAG Program Director to Karolyi Ranch in Houston, Texas, home of several Olympic and World Champions as well as bringing Mihai Brestyn to train the girls at an Ontario based camp. Universal Gymnastics in Miami Florida played home to the Men’s delegation under the direction of Yin Alvarez, top international coach. 17 Policy & Procedures Committee Angel Crossman (Board rep & Chair) Linda Clifford Barb Dring Ruth Uren Ruth Simpson (staff rep) Organizational Highlights Quest for Gold Initiatives This past season Gymnastics Ontario and its athletes were supported by Quest for Gold through a variety of programming areas. Athletes benefited from the receipt of Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance Program funding directly given by the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport based on the successful application from the Gymnastics Ontario Athlete Selection Committee. Gymnastics Ontario also received continued support for our athletes from the University of Toronto`s Athletic Center whereby High Performance athletes were able to train and receive medical support from the services offered by their facilities. Quest for Gold continued to fund through other initiatives such as the bursary grant offered to support the 2010 Coaching Congress. Canadian Sport for Life Gymnastics Ontario was a recipient of the Ministry of Health Promotions CS4L Grant project to assist organizations with the development of an implementation plan to support the integration of the CS4L framework and its inherent participant and athlete development pathways referred to as the LTAD model. Led by the Technical Director and our CS4L Consultant an 11 member Committee was established to start the process of assessing and creating an implementation development strategy for the organization and conduct an assessment of GO`s existing programs and activities within its members. Team Ontario Development Program The Team Ontario Development Program deemed ‘Training for Gold’, was launched in order to establish an equal playing field for our Canada Winter Games team and create a stronger bond between athletes, coaches and provinces. The team was to travel to Cancun, Mexico to train and compete in a mock meet. The project was launched to prepare these athletes for Canada Winter Games and ensure the team was confident before the games began. With Ontario taking home 16 out of a possible 28 medals from the Games we can confidently say these results prove without question the huge successes of Team Ontario; we are confident that the athletes’ ability to travel and train as part of a team prior to the Games contributed to the success and gained an outcome that every individual involved can be proud of. 18 Audited Financial Statements Audited Financial Statements June 30, 2011 19 Audited Financial Statements 20 Audited Financial Statements 21 Audited Financial Statements 22 Audited Financial Statements 23 Audited Financial Statements 24 Audited Financial Statements 25 Audited Financial Statements 26 Audited Financial Statements 27 Audited Financial Statements 28 Audited Financial Statements 29 Audited Financial Statements 30 Club Registration to June 30, 2011 Club Name Club Name Members Members G.R.
