Page Two THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the prophet Isaiah in which we are told of one who is to come who will be the light to the nations. In the second reading, from the Letter to the Ephesians, we are told of the grace and mystery of faith in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel, we hear that the Magi has followed the star that led to Christ. EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING: An ancient Catholic custom is the blessing of homes on or near the feast of the Epiphany. Those wishing to do so are welcome to obtain a prayer card for this purpose as you leave Mass. There is also blessed chalk to mark the doorways of your home. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Saint Kilian Parish holds Eucharistic adoration on the second Monday of each month (from after morning Mass until 8:00 p.m.) in the chapel of the Parish Center. The next opportunity will be on Monday, January 11th. The directives of the Church are that someone should be present before the Eucharist at all times. Parishioners are asked to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament during the day. Please sign up for a time on the board that is provided on the counter near the candle stands. Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. — Isaiah 60:1 Page Four Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace can once again be given to a newborn child. If you know of a family in need, please contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul by calling the parish office 4 Stages of Marriage – The 4 stages of marriage are: (1) Romance, (2) Disillusionment, (3) Misery, and (4) Awakening. Many marriages experience the first 3 Stages. Marriages that end in divorce never make it to the 4th Stage of Awakening. Don’t give up without learning about the 4th Stage of Awakening. If your marriage suffers from Disillusionment or Misery please contact Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i). For confidential information about or to register for the program beginning with a weekend on January 15, 2016, please contact Retrouvaille at 412-277-3434. More information is available at http://www.retrouvailleofpittsburghinc.org./ FOOD DONATIONS The Food Pantry, located in the basement of the old rectory in Mars at 205 Clark Street, is open every Wednesday from 3:00 until 6:00 pm. The Food Pantry is always appreciative of your donations (please do check to make sure donated items have not expired). The Food Pantry is in need of the following items: Cereal, Nutrigrain Bars, SpaghettiOs/Ravioli, chili, beef stew, taco shells (hard and soft), taco mix, pizza crust/sauce and healthy snacks. January 3, 2016 MUSIC MINISTRY On this feast of Epiphany we begin with the traditional song, We Three Kings. I have often wondered why the Magi brought those specific gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Since the early days of Christianity, biblical scholars have offered varying interpretations of the meaning and significance of these gifts. These valuable items were standard gifts to offer a King or deity in the ancient world: gold as a precious metal, frankincense as a perfume or incense, and myrrh as an anointing oil. In fact, these same three items were apparently among the gifts, recorded in ancient inscriptions, that King Seleucus II Callinicus offered to the god Apollo at the temple of Miletus in 243 B.C.E. The Book of Isaiah, when describing Jerusalem’s glorious restoration, tells of nations and kings who will come and “bring gold and frankincense and proclaim the praise of the Lord” (Isaiah 60:6) Scholars think that these three gifts were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself: gold represents his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a prefiguring of his death and embalming. So, the next time you sing this popular hymn, remember the vast history behind the texts! (research from the Bible History Daily website, written by the Biblical Archeological Society staff) Our choirs can be heard at the following masses: Children’s Choir Adult Choir Devoto Bells FELLOWSHIP DINNERS These Wednesday evening meals are of great help to our neighbors and provide food and fellowship for those in any need. Dinner is served from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. every Wednesday in the Parish Hall (next to the church in Mars on the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets). THANK YOU Thank you to Giant Eagle for their weekly donations of baked goods to the Food Pantry and McGinnis Sisters for their weekly donations of baked goods and desserts to the Fellowship Dinners. Special thanks to all our dinner sponsors and volunteers. As teachers we wanted to take some special time to focus on preparing our children for the coming of Christ by way of a Jesse Tree journal. Each day we read a story from the Bible. The stories were centered on kings and common people, about widows and children and brave fighters. These stories traced the family roots of Jesus through the Old Testament, and ended with the story of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. After reading and discussing each story, the students then journaled about the daily reading and created an ornament that represented the theme of the story. These lessons helped our students deepen their own roots and understanding of faith. As we begin this New Year, we continue to follow Jesus and his teachings. We will learn how Jesus calls upon each of us to be his disciples and focus on implementing acts of kindness every day of the year and throughout our lives. Have a blessed, healthy, Happy New Year!
