Page Two July 10, 2016 THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday the Solemnity of Saint Kilian, the patron of our parish, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the Book of Deuteronomy which speaks of the nearness of the commandments of the Lord. In the second reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians, we are of the identity of Jesus. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of what it means to be a neighbor to one in need. SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioner, Rosanne Ray, at the death of her mother, Alice Ciancio. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. WE ARE LIVING IN A TIME OF CHANGE. But what will this change look like? On Mission for The Church Alive!, our diocesan-wide planning initiative, includes 21 criteria for creating draft models for new kinds of ministry in our parishes, health care facilities, prisons and jails. To learn more, you are invited to attend one of this week’s Summer Sessions, 7- 8:30 pm: Mon. July 11 at St. Alphonsus Parish in McDonald; Tues. July 12 at St. Joseph the Worker in New Castle with Bishop David Zubik; Wed. July 13 at St. Joseph in Cabot; or Thurs. July 14 at Holy Martyrs in Tarentum. You can also visit www.OnMissionChurchAlive.org/About. FATHER LEVI HARTLE: Fr. Levi and the parish were informed that he will complete his assignment here at Saint Kilian on August 31st and begin a new assignment as parochial vicar at Holy Apostles Parish, Pittsburgh on September 1st. Holy Apostles Parish will form on that date from the parishes of Saint Albert the Great in Baldwin, Saint Basil and Saint Wendelin in Carrick, and Saint Norbert in Overbrook. We thank Father Levi for his pastoral care, spiritual initiatives and enthusiasm during the year he has spent with us. We promise him our prayers as he continues to work in another part of the Lord’s vineyard. We have also been informed by the bishop that he is unable to send a replacement for Fr. Levi at this time. The bishop is sending an additional priest to work with pastors who have responsibility for more than one parish or who celebrate Sacraments in more than one church. That decision is completely reasonable in that while Saint Kilian is a large and vibrant parish, its activity now happens largely at one site. There are parishes (and pastors) in our Diocese who provide ministry and celebrate sacraments in as many as six parishes (or church buildings). The On Mission initiative seeks to study the needs of the Diocese and the resources available to meet them. When it is completed and recommendations are made to the bishop, his decisions will be promulgated and resources will be allocated on the basis of demonstrated needs. At that time each parish will be provided the pastoral staff best able to continue the mission of the Church in worship, formation and service. Until that time, Saint Kilian Parish will be served by the current pastor and visiting priests who will assist when available. Question: What were the ideas that drove the design of the new church? Saint Kilian Parish Church Construction Update Questions and Answers Answer: There were many factors that contributed to the ultimate design of the new church. There is actually a Church document entitled “Build of Living Stones” which lays out the Church’s expectations for the design of a new church building. In addition we had the results of an early survey of parishioners (2002) which indicated a strong preference for a “cruciform” footprint (looking like a cross and not circular of semi-circular). Once a cruciform was decided, the aisles, nave (body) and transept (arms of the cross) fell into place. In addition, that early survey also indicated a preference for a more “traditional” looking church building. That drove the decision to employ the red brick and cast stone for our first building, the Parish Center, in 2007, and the church was then designed to match it. The topography of the land we owned lent itself to the design of the church we are building. It seemed natural for a main entrance on one level and a lower level for a hall and meeting rooms on another. In addition, we hoped to have as many people as close to the altar as possible for the sake of visibility. We wanted the length of a traditional church without the look of people being “a mile” from the altar. We also wanted a ceiling high enough to indicate its purpose as a church and not just another large space. Finally, there were municipal directives that had to be followed such as setbacks from adjacent properties and the number of parking spaces corresponding to a given number of seats Page Three LITURGY & EVENT CALENDARS LITURGY SCHEDULE Saturday, July 9, 2016 2:00 p.m. Wedding: Krista Wissenbach and Daniel Hehman Church in Mars 4:00 p.m. (CWNC) Mary Perriello (Stan and Connie Karrs) 5:30 p.m. (CWNC) Elizabeth DiNardo (Remy and Cheryl Schoone and Family) Sunday, July 10, 2016 - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7:30 a.m. (CWNC) Darv Barton (Margie) 9:00 a.m. (CWNC) Robert W. But further reflection reveals a rich and rewarding connection. In the 1st reading Moses counsels the people that the commandments are not beyond them, but within them. In the gospel Jesus teaches that the commandments to love God and neighbor are not hazy, but clear and applicable: to love God means to love the immediate neighbor in need. Psalm 69 reminds us that whenever we have been in need, God has responded without hesitation. Our song at the Preparation of the Gifts, What You Have Done, echoes these sentiments and reminds us that as we help our neighbor we also must see the face of God in each of them. We are His children, “called to serve as keepers of the vision and speakers of the word.” We Are Called teaches us in song that as we receive this Body and Blood of Christ we must work for justice showing compassion and mercy with love overflowing.
