Spring/Summer 2015
In Honor of Lilli
In 2010, my 3-year old daughter Lilli paraded through the halls of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital dressed like a giraffe. I walked behind her, with an IV bag filled with chemotherapy, as she skipped along with her best friend Bella, who was dressed like a ninja turtle. Just hours earlier, Lilli and Bella were holed up in their respective rooms, cranky, bored, and feeling rather ill from their treatments. And then, Chelsea’s Closet came to visit, and everything changed. It wasn’t the last time that Lilli wore her giraffe costume. She wore it trick or treating, she wore it to dance in the living room, she wore it out to eat. It never surprised me when we woke up in the morning and she asked me “Mom, can I be a giraffe today?” I never said no. Pretty soon this became a routine; Lilli wore a costume to every hospital visit. She was Snow White, Jessie the Cowgirl, Cinderella, Belle, Rapunzel, a cook, a ballerina. She danced to her radiation appointments wearing ball gowns that she just picked from the costume cart. And when she arrived, her nurses didn’t write “Lilli Trippe” on the patient board, they wrote “Snow White” instead, and Lilli loved every single second. When Lilli passed away, I wanted to do something that would make her proud of me, and I knew in my heart This wasn’t Lilli’s first experience with Chelsea’s Closet. that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t imagine a In fact, the giraffe costume was a special request that better model for a charity than the Chelsea Hicks Lilli made to CHF co-founder Jason Hicks. She had Foundation. So I joined their efforts, and as a Board been looking forward to that silly costume for weeks. Member, I now have the privilege of working to make And when it finally came, smiles emerged and laughter CHF a stronger, more prominent foundation. I sincerely erupted. Dressing up was the best medicine she had all hope you’ll join me. month. Kristin Trippe, CHF Board Member

2015 selects CHF
as beneficiary Betsiefest is a bluegrass music festival that started in 2010 as a celebration of life for a dear friend who passed at age 39 from cancer. It has evolved into a full day music festival with multiple bands including The Paga Jug Band, Bahattsi, ZuhG and Shafty, food and activites and kids crafts. There is also overnight camping available in an adjoining field. Betsie loved life and children so her family and friends wanted to make this an event to give back to the community. This year they have partnered with CHF to bring more attention to children fighting serious illnesses. Admission is free but $25 suggested donation per adult, with a goal of raising $2,500. Last year’s winners were from Lake Oswego Fire Department. Let’s see if they can keep their title! In addition,
20% of the night’s dinner proceeds will benefit the Chelsea Hicks Foundation so bring your family and friends and enjoy a fun evening. If you’d like to sponsor the event or help contribute in any way please contact John Gentle at [email protected]. To donate, go to https://chelseahicks.ejoinme.org/

small sacrifice can deliver more
hope and healing
The number five holds special significance for us at CHF: Chelsea was just five when she lost her battle with Wilms’ Tumor
cancer. Five dollars is also the cost of one cup of specialty coffee and covers the program expense of one child’s goody bag, one craft project or a sword or tiara accessory for a hospitalized child. To help sustain and grow our “Chelsea’s Closet” program in our sixth year of operation, we’ve formed “Chelsea’s $5 Coffee Club.” Joining is easy: Simply give up one specialty coffee (approximately $5) each month and make a recurring, monthly donation of that amount to CHF. To “sweeten the pot,” we’re offering some special gifts to our donors: • $5/month (receive a coffee gift card)
• $15/month (receive a CHF coffee mug and coffee gift card)
• $25/month (receive a CHF t-shirt, coffee mug and coffee
gift card)
• $50/month (All previous benefits, plus two tickets to
October 2015 Masquerade Ball)
To sign up for the Chelsea’s $5 Coffee Club please follow this link: https://chelseahicks.ejoinme.org/coffeeclub. Shop and support CHF!
