Omaha Gives!
A 24-Hour Charitable
Challenge
May 20, 2015
Click here to visit the Omaha Gives! secure web site for more information
or to make a donation to RCHS on May 20.
Roncalli Catholic is proud to be participating in Omaha
Gives! — a 24-hour, online giving event organized by the
Omaha Community Foundation to grow philanthropy
in the metro area (Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie
counties). The minimum donation is $10 and there is
no maximum. Matching funds and prize money will
be made available to amplify charitable donations. The
goal is to inspire the community to come together for 24
hours to contribute as many charitable dollars as possible
to support the work of local nonprofit organizations.
Omaha Gives! is based on other successful giving days
hosted by community foundations across the country.
The online giving holiday will take place May 20,
2015 from midnight to midnight. Mark your calendars
because Roncalli Catholic will need your help! We will
be joining over 300 local non-profits to raise money
together and compete for matching funds and prize
money. The more money we raise, the larger percentage
of the matching pool we will receive. The more donors
who give to us, the better chances we have to win prize
money.

IMPORTANT News Bulletin:
Roncalli Catholic Introduces All-Inclusive Tuition
Structure for 2015-2016 School Year
Roncalli Catholic has introduced a new, all-inclusive
tuition payment structure which eliminates any
additional fees for the 2015-2016 school year, according to
Roncalli Catholic President Jeff Dempsey. “We want to make it as easy as possible for our families to
see the true cost of a quality Roncalli Catholic education,”
said Dempsey. “Our families now receive just one, allinclusive tuition rate and they can feel comfortable in
knowing we will not surprise them with future hidden
costs or fees.”
Rather than asking families to pay the more traditional
“enrollment fee”, for instance, families are now being
asked to make a tuition down payment to enroll for the
2015-2016 school year. “We see the down payment as an
investment in a faith-filled, Catholic education centered
on Jesus Christ,” continued Dempsey, “and we think
families appreciate the openness and honesty of the
structure.” According to Roncalli Catholic’s Business Manager Barb
Norris, the school will continue to work with families
to customize tuition plans in order to make a quality
Catholic education possible for their students. “More
than anything, we want to be upfront and honest, and to
show that Catholic education can be financially accessible
to all,” Norris said.

the new all-inclusive tuition structure visit us online at

S t r ategic Planning Process C h a r t s R o n c a l l i C a t h o l i c ’ s C o u rs e
Dear families and friends of Roncalli Catholic:
Roncalli Catholic is in the midst of extraordinary times -- I’ve used the phrase before and
it remains true today. In our 50th Anniversary year, and on the heels of Angelo Guiseppi
Roncalli’s canonization in 2014, Roncalli Catholic is truly blessed.
Jeff Dempsey, President
Roncalli Catholic
High School
In an effort to ensure our continued great progress, last May we convened our first,
official Strategic Planning session, bringing together a group of clergy, alumni, parents,
staff and friends of Roncalli Catholic to chart our school’s course through 2020. The
group quickly identified “Catholic Identity” as a current Roncalli Catholic strength and
as the foundation of our entire enterprise, along with five additional “goals” outlined
below. Still in “draft” form and with greater detail forthcoming, here are our school’s six
major strategic goals, as determined by our Strategic Planning group:
Goal 1 – Catholic identity will be at the core of all Roncalli Catholic activities
Goal 2 – Pursue academic and technological innovation
Goal 3 – Continue to grow and promote Roncalli Catholic
Goal 4 – Sustain Roncalli Catholic through quality special events and fundraising
Goal 5 C
ompetitive participation in all athletic/extracurricular activities will be an
expectation
Goal 6 -- Continue to enhance and maintain campus facilities and grounds
Goal 1 -- Catholic Identity
First and foremost, Roncalli Catholic remains steadfast in the practice of our Catholic
faith.
In his small book The Holy See’s Teaching on Catholic Schools, Archbishop J. Michael
Miller, CSB, outlines the Five Essential Marks for Catholic Schools -- they should be:
Inspired by a Supernatural Vision; Founded on a Christian Anthropology; Animated
by Communion and Community; Imbued with a Catholic Worldview Throughout its
Curriculum; and, Sustained by Gospel Witness.
Archbishop Miller mentions nothing of being conveniently Catholic, or of being Catholic
only on Holy Days, or only during Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter. In fact, he says,
“The Holy See’s documents insist that, in order to be worthy of its name, a Catholic
school must be founded on Jesus Christ, the Redeemer. It is He who, through His
Incarnation, is united with each student. Christ is not an afterthought or an add-on to
Catholic educational philosophy; He is the center and fulcrum of the entire enterprise,
the light enlightening every boy and girl who comes into a Catholic school (cf. John 1:9).”
Quite literally, from academics to clubs, organizations, athletics and the way we treat
one another with mutual respect and decency, Jesus Christ should be at the forefront and
center of everything we do at Roncalli Catholic.
Goal 2 -- Academics and Technology
Beginning in the fall of 2015, our implementation of a “bring-your-own” iPad device will
begin with our incoming freshman class. Freshmen will be required to provide their own
iPad and upperclassmen will be encouraged to do so. We provided our teachers and

State Competition.
RCHS Culinary students Rosa Brown, Caleb Dempsey,
Tea Anna McDowell and Kyle Robinson took second
place and won the Best of Beef Award at the ProStart
State Competition hosted by Southeast Community
College on February 28. Each member of the team won
a $1,500 dollar scholarship to the Culinary Institute of
America and a $4,000 scholarship to Sullivan University,
where students can earn a degree in Culinary Arts.
During the competition, 12 teams from nine Nebraska
schools had 60 minutes to prepare a three-course
meal, demonstrating both their creativity and culinary
skills, using only two burners, no electrical appliances
and only ice for refrigeration. Teams were observed
and rated by judges from Nebraska colleges and
universities as well as local chefs and restaurateurs,
to place in the competition. To earn second place, the
team had to score exceptional in various categories
including: knife skills, cooking procedures, safety and
sanitation, professionalism, as well as product taste and
presentation.
On Feb. 20, three of the team members, Rosa Brown,
Caleb Dempsey, and Kyle Robinson, earned a Silver
Medal and won the Best of Beef Award at the High School
Culinary Invitational at Metropolitan Community
College to qualify for the State competition. At the
invitational, 28 teams competed, making two threecourse meals in just one hour.
The mentor for the Culinary Arts team is Kimbler
Harrold (RCHS class of 1999) who is the Chef D’Cuisine
for the Liberty Tavern at the Hilton Hotel downtown.
He has been a mentor for the program since 2007.

Roncalli Catholic Kicks off Lent
with All-School Mass and Service Retreat
Students at Roncalli Catholic kicked off Lent with a
traditional Ash Wednesday Mass and then went on
to do something more. They participated in an AllSchool Service Retreat that full-time Chaplain, Fr. Chi
Igboanusi, hopes will become an annual tradition.
“Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent, a time of preparation
for the celebration of Easter and repentance,” said
Igboanusi. “The ashes serve as a sign of our repentance,
acknowledging that we occasionally get off track, and
our commitment to journey back to God and to become
better people.”
“Serving others who are less fortunate is a great way start
on our commitment, while serving Christ,” continued
Igboanusi. “I hope to build on the success of this service
event by making it an annual tradition, which benefits
both our students and the community they live in.”
According to Igboanusi, many of the students were
inspired and planning to volunteer again, on their own
or as a homeroom.
Prior to the retreat each homeroom discussed where they
would like to volunteer and selected a location. The 20
agencies and organizations that benefited from the retreat
include: All Saints School, Child Saving Institute, Children’s
Respite Care Center, Omaha Food Bank, Seven Oaks Notre
Dame Assisted Living Facility, Seven Oaks Retirement
Home, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice House,
Together Inc., Holy Name School, Project Hope Food
Pantry, Salvation Army, The Ambassador Subacute
and Rehabilitation Center, Special Project for Children’s
Hospital, Bethlehem House and Precious Memories.
ANNUAL HUNGER BANQUET
Lent at Roncalli Catholic was also marked with weekly
prayer services as well as the school’s annual Hunger
Banquet on March 6. This is a Roncalli Catholic Lenten
tradition in which students draw for their meal according
to the populations of the world. Third world countries
ate rice; second world countries ate rice and beans;
first world countries got rice, beans, a fish patty and a
cookie. The students who ate first world food sat at a
table, while everyone else sat on the floor. The purpose of
the banquet is to demonstrate the inequality of food in the
world today, and to be in solidarity with those who have
nothing or very little to eat.

Roncalli Catholic’s first Trivia Night united 300 alumni,
supporters, parents, faculty and staff as part of the school’s
year-long 50th anniversary celebration. The February
21 event raised nearly $10K for the school’s technology
program, and will help support the school’s new 1:1
technology initiative for the 2015-2016 school year.
According to RCHS President, Jeff Dempsey, the sold-out
event was yet another in a string of positive happenings
at the school. “The school has been so blessed in recent years with
tremendous enrollment growth and support from the
community. Trivia Night was a great way to bring folks
back to campus and to continue to celebrate our 50th
Anniversary,” said Dempsey.
The winning team had the highest score following 10
rounds with 10 questions each. Questions ranged from
Archbishop Rummel High School history to current
C
events. Members of the winning
team include Fr. Lloyd Gnirk, Pat
and Tim Mueting, Lisa Dempsey,
Jeanne and Jerry (Class of 1975)
Dempsey, and Linda and Robert
Dempsey. The school’s 47-year
veteran teacher, Bill Schlueter,
served and master of ceremonies for
the event.
The event is one of many being held to celebrate 50 years
of Catholic education on the school campus, including
an outdoor Mass attended by more than 600 in August
2014. Please see the web site at www.roncallicatholic.org

Life Is Sweet (Pro-Life) Week Events March 2-6
Roncalli Catholic Campus Ministry hosted a Pro-Life Week for all students, March 2-6. Daily activities focused on the
pro-life message and engaged the students in various activities as follows:
Monday: Adopt & Hashtag Your Baby
Students “adopted” miniature babies. They created
hashtags, took “selfies” with the baby, and submitted for
prizes. The six most creative selfies won candy prizes.
Tuesday: Baby Bottle Penny War
Students brought in all of their pennies to fill a homeroom
baby bottle, raising money for the Pregnancy Center. The
homeroom with the most pennies won a pizza party.
Wednesday: Movie Night
Students enjoyed the movie “40” in the Gustafson
Center, along with free pizza, popcorn, candy and soft
drinks.
Thursday: Scavenger Hunt
Students completed a Pro-Life scavenger hunt
around the school.
Friday: Pro-life Cupcakes
Each student received a “birthday”
cupcake at lunch to celebrate those
who never had a chance to celebrate
a birthday. The day called upon the
tradition of celebrating each year of life
with a cake in celebration. The cupcakes
served as a subtle reminder of the lives
that were not celebrated. Cupcakes were
baked and donated by students and parents.

Juniors Focus on Spiritual
Responsibility at Annual
Retreat
RCHS Juniors shared fun, fellowship and faith at their
Responsibility Class Retreat at the Pro Sanctity Retreat
Center in Elkhorn on March 4. The event was organized
by Campus Ministry, and led by Fr. Michael Voithofer,
Assistant Pastor of St. James.
RCHS Christmas Concert
Nolan McGill, Tyler Crawford and Brian Bosn
perform at Roncalli Catholic’s annual Christmas
concert. The December 10 event featured
performances by the Concert Band, Concert Chorus,
Women’s Chorus, PRIDE A Cappella, Piano Class,
and Guitar Class. The free concert concluded with
refreshments and desserts.
With interactive games, music, witness talks, and small
group sessions, the retreat focused on preparing students
for the challenges of life, enabling them to stand up as
leaders of positive change wherever life may take them.
The day culminated with Eucharistic adoration and healing
prayers, followed by an opportunity for the students to
share how God touched them throughout the day. Each year, Roncalli Catholic has a retreat for each class
of students. Freshmen had the Respect Retreat in the Fall
to help build a positive school environment; the annual
Sophomore Service Retreat will be held on April 29; and the
Senior Leadership Retreat was also held in the Fall.

RCHS SPORTS NEWS:
Roncalli Catholic Swimmers Make a Big Splash at
Conference and State Meets!
Roncalli Catholic swimmers prior to the State
meet with all the State qualifiers on their
cooperative team. RCHS competes as part of a
coop team that includes Brownell-Talbot, Mercy,
and Concordia.

Brian Bosn (RCHS) / Brendan Findall (RCHS) /
Karin Berg (Concordia)
It’s safe to say that Roncalli Catholic swimmers had a
very successful, record-breaking year. In addition to six
swimmers qualifying for the State meet, Senior swimmer
Brian Bosn made waves by breaking two school records,
being named River City Champion in two events and
making a strong finish in the State finals. Senior Katy
Anielak also reached a personal best when she claimed a
school record.
The boys 400 Freestyle Relay team made up of Bosn, Jared
Nigrin, Lance Culjat (Brownell Talbot) and Jack Bydalek
(Brownell Talbot) finished 17th in the State preliminaries
this year, missing qualifying for the finals by just .23
seconds. (RCHS competes as part of a coop team that
includes Brownell-Talbot, Mercy, and Concordia.)
Katy Anielak, Brian Bosn, Brenden Findall, Hannah
Leddy, Jacob Needham and Jared Nigrin qualified for the
State meet with remarkable performances at the River
City Conference Meet on Feb. 14. That same day, Brian
Bosn broke both his own school record when he came in
first in the 500 Freestyle event and another school record
previously held by his brother, Tim Bosn (2013), when
he finished first in the 200 Freestyle. Katy Anielak broke
the school record in the 100 Butterfly at the River Cities
Conference Meet. At the Feb. 28 State finals in Lincoln, Bosn finished 11th in
the State in the 500 Freestyle and 13th in the State in the
200 Freestyle. He qualified for the finals, by finishing in
the top 16 at the Feb. 27 State preliminary meet. Although
RCHS relay teams have made it to the finals in 2012, 2013
and 2014, this marks the first time in more than 20 years
that an RCHS swimmer has qualified for an individual
event in the State finals.
Senior Swimmer Brian Bosn broke two school
records, was named River City Champion and
finished 11th & 13th in his individual events in
the State finals. Pictured in the 500 Free event at

S t r ategic Planning Process C h a r t s R o n c a l l i C a t h o l i c ’ s C o u rs e
continued from page 5
administrators with iPads at the beginning of this current
semester and ongoing professional development sessions
with help to ensure meaningful use of the technology
going forward. Likewise, we continue to enhance our
technology infrastructure. The planned opening of our
new Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math
(STEAM) lab in the fall of 2015, will provide tremendous
opportunities for all of our students.
Goal 3 -- Grow and Promote
Roncalli Catholic has seen tremendous enrollment
growth in recent years. With an incoming freshman class
projected to be near 110, we anticipate overall enrollment
of ~390 students in the fall of 2015 -- this will amount to
35% growth in enrollment since 2010.
After six straight years of enrollment growth, it will
remain incumbent on us to stabilize and maintain our
enrollment, without stepping back -- a range of of 375 to
400 students is our optimal goal.
Goal 4 -- Sustain
In recent years we have also experienced marked gains
in combined net income from Festa del Leone, Swing
with Pride, High Tea, Stock the Grotto, and our fireworks
adventure and we added a successful Trivia Night (see
page 13) this past February. Our Christmas Annual Fund
effort and our Spring Technology Appeal have also grown
annually, as have proceeds from our overall fundraising
efforts.
Sustaining growth in these efforts, along with continued
fiscally conservative budgeting and spending policies
going forward, will allow us to build on our strengthening,
long-term financial viability.
Goal 5 -- Competitive athletics and
extracurricular activities
We encourage students to become involved in their high
school. From the Culinary Team to the Trap Team, from
football, baseball, track, the Future Business Leaders of
America and a whole host of other opportunities, our
students and coaches and moderators should expect to
be competitive and accountable at all levels and in all
endeavours.
Beginning with our stadium renovation and concession
stand addition, our campus facilities have been greatly
enhanced in recent years. The renovation of our Notre
Dame Auditorium, the installation of our running track,
enhancements to our practice field along Sorensen
Parkway (including the installation of irrigation), the
installation of a new scoreboard and stadium lights at
our baseball field, and other facilities and equipment
enhancements have helped to level the playing field
relative to our competitors.
Goal 6 -- Maintain and enhance campus
facilities and grounds
Along with the campus facilities enhancements noted
above, our campus has seen well over $1,000,000 in
improvements in recent years, including: the creation
of our new Gustafson Center in 2014; the installation of
a concrete parking lot and sidewalks; our new Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) lab
will open in the fall, as mentioned; various classroom
enhancement such as carpeting and lighting, along with
many other substantial, if not less visible, improvements.
Also, as part of our Strategic Planning process we have
engaged in an overall campus facilities plan and audit.
Our plan, to be shared in its entirety at a later date, will
include an assessment of our school’s mechanical systems
throughout our 50+ year-old building.
Work continues in this process and our plan is to present a
draft document to our Board of Education yet this spring.
Please feel free to let me know of questions or to offer
suggestions at any point going forward.
Indeed, we are in the midst of tremendously exciting
times here at Roncalli Catholic.
God bless you,
Jeffrey M. Dempsey, President
