Blumberg directed several movies for
the French channel Arte and wrote and
directed medium and full-length scientific documentaries. By adopting handheld “contact camera” methods from
Jean Rouch, together with the use of
natural available light, Jérôme Blumberg aims at emphasizing the part played by the scientists themselves in the presentation of their research, and broadcasting science as an exciting discovery adventure.

19.00 - 21.00 • screening of the film Encounter with the Frisian Skûtsjes (2007, CNRS images, FR)
In Holland, transport by sail is an age-old tradition. The Dutch designed the “tjalk”, a sailing vessel with flat bottom and lee boards.
Friesland gave birth to the “skûtsje”, a fast ship with a very shallow
depth to be able to deliver the local farms with turf, potatoes, sand
or beets. Every year, in Friesland, reckless groups of sailors compete
on the Frisian lakes for the fastest, in a popular regatta: the “Skûtsjesilen”.

Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, which makes its image particularly difficult to get even with the most powerful telescopes. The film
will explain the mysteries of this star and will bring us to the Dogon
of Mali, where a special ceremony in its honor is organized every sixty
years.
The movies will be commented by Jérôme Blumberg and Jean-Marc
Bonnet-Bidaud (researcher at the CEA, French commission for atomic energy and alternative energies).

in Paris, ESTEC/ESA, Groninger Forum, Le Tour Utrecht, ‘t Hoogt, CNRS
(French organization for scientific research), Green Film Making, Réseau
Franco-Néerlandais, the Alliance Française Coeur de Zélande, and the
Lycée Francais van Gogh in the Hague.
Special thanks go to Jérôme Blumberg and Iris Hogendijk co-organizators
of the festival. We are also grateful to Eric Boiseau and the Ecole Estienne
in Paris for realizing the visuals and the teaser of the festival.
The fifth edition of the International Film & Science festival will take
place from April 23rd until June 18th, 2015 in Amsterdam, Goes, Groningen, Hindeloopen, Noorwijk and Utrecht. Over the course of a couple
of weeks, scientific films mainly from the Netherlands and France will
be screened. Those documentaries, archival material and films will be
presented and commented by experts.
This year’s theme is “Velodroom: Cycling in Dutch and French Films”,
the choice of this theme is linked to the start of the Tour de France in
Utrecht on July 4th. Moreover, next to the cycling films, we will also approach other themes connected with this year’s agenda, namely the climate change conference organized in Paris in December 2015. Engaged
documentaries, astonishing moving images and fictional films, rarely
presented to the public will be screened during the festival. A crucial
goal of the Film&Science festival is to establish relationships between
France and the Netherlands in the field of scientific cooperation, also by
organizing debates and workshops.
This year we also would like to pay a tribute to the work of the French
filmmaker Jérôme Blumberg who initiated the creation of the festival
five years ago, together with Thomas Beaufils. A retrospective of his
work will be held in the timeframe of this festival.
Over the years, the festival Film&Science has greatly outgrown with sessions being held in several cities of the Netherlands.
All films will be screened in Dutch or in French with English subtitles.
