Foreword"
"
As!we!celebrate!our!175th!year!as!a!community!of!Christian!faith!in!Cockfosters,!we!thank!God!for!all!
that!has!been,!and!trust!Him!for!all!that!is!to!come.!!
This!is!our!church’s!verse!for!this!special!year:!
“From! Christ! the! whole! body! grows! and! builds! itself! up! in! love! as! every! part! does! its! work.”!
(Ephesians!4:16)!
Growing!in!Christ,!along!with!going!in!His!Name,!is!the!heartbeat!of!any!church.!!He!is!the!Head!who!
leads!and!nourishes!his!Body.!So!the!central!character!of!this!story!is!the!Lord!Jesus!Christ.!The!honour!
is!all!His.!!
For!175!years!there!has!been!a!community!of!faith!here!worshipping!the!one!true!and!living!God!and!
witnessing! to! his! Son’s! death! and! resurrection! for! us.! The! story! of! God! at! Christ! Church! has! moved!
from!chapter!to!chapter,!change!to!change,!generation!to!generation,!but!looking!back!we!can!discern!
behind!it!the!hand!of!the!real!Author,!God!himself.!!
He!has!been!patient!with!our!faults!and!generous!with!his!blessings.!He!is!making!us!into!the!kind!of!
church! he! first! created! on! the! day! of! Pentecost.! Luke,! the! inspired! author! of! Acts,! describes! that!
church,! and! his! portrait! of! their! worship! and! life! has! hugely! inspired! our! vision! today:! together,!
devoted! to! the! teaching,! fellowship,! breaking! of! bread! and! prayer,! enjoying! the! favour! of! the!
community,!and!seeing!the!Lord!adding!constantly!to!our!number!(Acts!2:42T47).!
My!thanks!therefore!are!owed!to!all!past!and!present,!clergy,!staff!and!all!church!members!who!have!

In!the!first!part!of!the!19th!century,!Cockfosters!was!but!a!small!village.!The!origin!of!the!name!of!the!
village!is!uncertain!but!it!is!thought!to!be!derived!from!the!name!of!the!chief!house!of!the!foresters,!the!
“Coq(de(Forestieres”.(!At!that!time!the!inhabitants!of!the!village!of!Cockfosters!had!a!problem.!In!order!
to!attend!Sunday!worship!they!had!to!travel!to!St!Andrew’s!parish!church!in!Enfield.!This!may!not!have!
been! too! difficult! for! the! wealthy! folk! inhabiting! the! large! houses! in! the! area! and! who! had! carriages!
but!for!most!of!the!villagers!this!meant!a!long!walk!across!fields!or!along!country!lanes.!
To! their! rescue! came! Robert! Cooper! Lee! Bevan,! the! son! of! David! Bevan! whose! ancestors! were! the!
founders!of!Barclays!Bank!and!who!lived!in!Heddon!Court!(a!large!house!
situated! where! Heddon! Court! Avenue! and! Freston! Gardens! may! now! be!
found).! On! his! marriage! in! 1835! to! Lady! Agneta! Elizabeth! Yorke,! Robert!
Bevan!acquired!the!lease!of!Trent!Park!and!resolved!to!build!a!church!in!
Cockfosters! for! the! local! inhabitants.! Bevan! was! an! evangelical,! and! a!
gospelTcentred!ministry!continues!at!Christ!Church!to!this!day.!
Robert!Bevan!commissioned!Henry!Edward!Kendall!to!design!the!church!
building!and!the!church!was!consecrated!by!Bishop!Blomfield!on!9th!April!
1839.! The! first! vicar! was! Rev! Gilbert! Wiggins.! The! original! building! was!
very! plain,! faced! East! (ie! towards! Chalk! Lane)! and! had! a! nave! with! box!
pews,!gallery,!tower!and!steeple!and!a!small!churchyard.!It!may!be!noted!
that,! just! nine! days! after! the! church! was! consecrated,! the! first! baptisms!
took!place.!
Robert(Cooper(Lee(Bevan(
In! 1878! the! box! pews! were! replaced! by! open! benches! and,! in! 1892,! an!
addition!to!the!churchyard!was!consecrated!by!the!Bishop!of!Bedford.!
In! 1887,! to! mark! the! Golden! Jubilee! of! Queen! Victoria,! the!
parishioners! of! Cockfosters! provided! the! clock! and! bell! in! the!
tower.!The!churchwardens!at!the!time!were!Robert!Bevan!and!J!W!
Cater,! who! lived! in! West! Lodge! (a! private! residence! at! the! time).!
Robert!Bevan!died!in!1890!at!the!age!of!81.!!
!
In! time,! the! church! was! found! to! be! too! small! for! the! numbers!
attending!so,!in!1898,!the!church!was!completely!transformed.!The!
architect! appointed! was! Sir! Arthur! Blomfield,! son! of! Bishop!
The(Clock(Mechanism(
Blomfield! who! had! consecrated! the! church.! The! enlargement!
consisted! of! the! addition! of! the! chancel,! transept! (side! chapel),! north! aisle,! vestries! and! organ!
chamber.! Due! to! lack! of! space! at! the! east! end,! the! interior! of! the! church! was! turned! round! and! the!
chancel! built! at! the! west! end! so! the! church! today,! unusually,! faces! west.! Most! of! the! stained! glass!
windows!were!installed!at!this!time!(see!Appendix!I).!The!alterations!cost!£2,347.!
A!new!Walker!organ!was!installed!in!1952!in!memory!of!Prebendary!
Bertram!Hopson,!who!was!vicar!for!nearly!39!years!until!his!death!in!
office!in!1951.!!
In! 1965,! numbers! 1! and! 2! Chalk! Lane! were! built! on! part! of! the! old!
vicarage! garden,! using! funds! from! the! sale! of! a! staff! house! in! Chalk!
Lane.!
In! 1971! part! of! the! School! Field! was! sold! and! the! proceeds! used! to!
build!the!annex!to!Church!House,!and!the!vicar’s!vestry!(designed!by!
KC! White! Partnership)! was! added! to! the! southTwest! corner! of! the!
church.!!
The(Walker(Organ(Console(
By! the! 1970s,! the! original! vicarage! was! becoming! uneconomical! to!
repair! and! maintain! so! a! decision! was! made! to! replace! it! with! a!
modern!building.!Part!of!the!garden!was!used!to!build!Christ!Church!Lodge!and!the!proceeds!used!to!
build!the!current!vicarage,!which!was!completed!in!1977.!
In! the! late! 1970s! the! pews! were! removed! from! the! Transept! to! form! a! side! chapel,! dedicated! to! the!
memory!of!Joan!Hooker,!wife!of!Rev!Kenneth!Hooker!(Vicar!from!1958!to!1973).!

During! the! next! 20! years! few! changes! were! made! to! the! church! building.! Although! proposals! were!
made!in!the!early!1980s!and!1990s!to!extend!the!church,!these!did!not!come!to!fruition!(See!Appendix!
III).!
!
However,!in!the!mid!1990s,!it!was!felt!that!the!picture!of!Our!Lord,!(which!had!been!positioned!above!
the!communion!table!since!1935)!should!be!moved!to!a!more!secluded!part!of!the!church!and!that!the!
stone!font!at!the!back!of!the!church!should!be!removed!in!order!to!increase!circulation!space.!Due!to!
the!objections!of!a!number!of!church!members,!a!Consistory!Court!was!held!in!the!church!building!by!
the!Chancellor!of!the!Diocese!on!7th!October!1999!and!formal!approval!was!given!for!the!changes.!In!
2000,!the!picture!was!moved!to!the!side!chapel!and!the!font!was!removed,!broken!up!and!replaced!by!
a!portable!oak!font.!
In!2001!the!church!building!was!rewired,!redecorated!and!new!lighting!installed!and!in!2003!a!new!
bookstall!and!welcome!desk!were!installed.!
!
On!2nd!July!2002,!Miss!Alison!Kirk,!a!longTstanding!church!member,!went!to!be!with!the!Lord.!This!was!
a!significant!event!for!the!future!of!Christ!Church!Cockfosters!because!she!left!half!of!her!substantial!
estate! to! the! church.! After! consulting! with! the! congregation! and! with! much! prayer! and! careful!
consideration,!the!Parochial!Church!Council!agreed!that!most!of!the!funds!(some!£750,000)!should!be!
used!for!a!church!plant!(see!Page!13),!for!mission!beyond!the!parish!and!for!improvements!to!Church!
House! (see! page! 7)! and! the! church! building.! Over! the! next! few! years,! plans! were! drawn! up! for! an!
extension! to! the! church! building! (see! Appendix! III)! but! it! was! not! possible! to! obtain! planning!
permission!for!an!extension!onto!the!back!(Chalk!Lane!end)!of!the!church:!this!was!largely!because!the!
church!is!situated!in!a!Conservation!Area.!However,!it!was!felt!that!the!interior!of!the!church!should!be!
extensively!reordered!and!so,!in!2007,!the!choir!stalls!were!removed!from!the!chancel.!In!May!2010!all!
the!remaining!pews,!together!with!the!chancel!rail,!were!removed!from!the!church!building,!a!carpet!
was!laid!and!chairs!installed.!Without!doubt!this!reordering!has!greatly!increased!the!flexibility!of!the!
church!building!for!worship!and!other!activities.!It!is!hoped!that!further!improvements!may!be!made!
to!the!church!building!in!the!future,!subject!to!the!Lord’s!leading.!

Building! Fund”! was! appointed.! Mrs! Cosmo! Bevan! donated! the! land! to! the! church! in! 1927! and,! on!
October!3rd!1931,!Mrs!Bevan!laid!the!foundation!stone.!!

“Church! House”! was! formally! dedicated! by! the! Bishop! of!
London,! Dr! WinningtonTIngram,! on! 26th! April! 1932.! This!
was!a!very!significant!development!in!the!history!of!Christ!
Church! and! much! credit! must! be! given! to! the! vicar! at! the!
time,! Prebendary! Bertram! Hopson,! for! the! vision! and!
inspiration! to! build! the! hall.! The! building! had! cost! in! the!
region! of! £10,000.! From! the! beginning! the! building! was!
used! very! extensively! for! both! church! and! nonTchurch!
activities!and!has!been!a!vital!resource!in!the!ministry!and!
mission!of!Christ!Church!Cockfosters.!

The!
next!

The(Main(Hall(in(the(1930s(
development! came! in! 1970!

main!hall.!This!was!designed!by!K!C!White!architects!and!provided!much!
needed! extra! space! and!flexibility!with!the!ability!to!subTdivide! the! area!
into!small!spaces!when!required.!

Over! the! next! 30! years! minor! improvements! were! made,! including! a!
refurbished!kitchen!but,!by!the!end!of!the!20th!century,!the!building!was!
becoming! very! dated! and! in! need! of! a! substantial! upgrade.! A! major!
reordering! of! Church! House! was! first! discussed!
by! the! Parochial! Church! Council! in! 1994! but!
there! were! insufficient! funds! to! carry! out! any!
major! development.! However,! the! receipt! of! a!

July! 2010! and! the! building,! now! renamed! “Christ! Church! House”,! was!
reopened!by!the!Bishop!of!London,!Dr!Richard!Chartres,!on!10th!July!2011.!

We!are!now!blessed!with!a!building!which!is!truly!fit!for!the!21st!century.!It!is!

office!facilities,!The!House!Café!has!opened!(see!page!25)!and!there!are!also!many!outside!lettings!thus!
enabling!the!hall!to!be!used!by!the!whole!community.!The!words!“By!Love!Serve!One!Another”!were!
inscribed!over!the!entrance!of!the!original!building!and!now!appear!on!the!commemorative!plaque!in!
the!entrance!foyer.!They!are!as!appropriate!today!as!they!were!when!the!building!first!opened!in!1933.!

Wood!and!Grace!Church!Highlands.!

St"Paul’s"Hadley"Wood"

The!origins!of!our!first!“church!plant”!may!be!traced!back!to!the!early!years!of!the!20th!century,!when!
Sunday! evening! services! were! held! in! the! “Garden! Room”,! a! wooden! building! in! the! grounds! of! St!
Ronan’s!School!(now!demolished)!in!Hadley!Wood.!The!services!at!the!time!were!usually!led!by!Rev!
Walter!Mackinnon,!curate!at!Christ!Church!Cockfosters.!!

In!time,!with!the!growth!of!the!population!of!Hadley!Wood,!it!was!decided!that!a!permanent!building!
was!needed!and!the!gift!of!a!plot!of!land!was!received!in!1909!from!the!Duchy!of!Lancaster!and!the!
Jack!Estate!on!condition!that!a!church!building!(designed!by!Mr!Albert!Kingwell)!was!erected!within!3!
years.!On!31st!March!1911!the!“Church!Room”!was!completed!and!dedicated!by!the!Bishop!of!Islington.!
Rev!Thomas!Quigley!was!appointed!curate!with!responsibility!for!Hadley!Wood!in!1913.!From!1937!
the!church!became!St!Paul’s!Hadley!Wood,!the!name!coming!from!the!stained!glass!window!above!the!
communion!table.!
St! Paul’s! was! originally! a! “Daughter! Church”! of! Christ! Church! Cockfosters! and! the! minister! was! a!
resident! curate! of! Christ! Church,! although! St! Paul’s! had! its! own! Church! Committee! and! was!
responsible! for! its! own! finances.! However,! in! time,! it! was! felt! that! St! Paul’s! should! become!
independent! from! Christ! Church! so,! on! 16th! January! 2000,! it! was! granted! “Conventional! District”!
status.! Today,! the! church! continues! to! thrive! and! serve! the! community! of! Hadley! Wood! under! its!
minister,!Rev!Rupert!Mackay.!

In! 2001! the! Parochial! Church! Council! started! considering! the! vision!
for!a!second!“church!plant”!but!no!suitable!location!was!identified!and!
there!was!no!funding!available.!However,!the!receipt!of!a!large!legacy!
from! the! estate! of! Alison! Kirk! in! 2003! (see! page! 5)! gave! the! PCC! the!
opportunity! to! allocate! a! significant! sum! to! set! up! a! church! plant.! In!
2005,! Rev! Andrew! Wadsworth! was! appointed! associate! minister! at!
Christ! Church! with! a! view! to! leading! a! church! plant.! A! large! housing!
estate,!known!as!Highlands!Village,!on!the!site!of!the!former!Highlands!
Hospital,!was!identified!as!a!possible!location,!as!there!was!no!church!
to! serve! the! residents! of! the! estate.! In! 2006! the! Bishop! of! Edmonton!
and! St! Peter’s! Grange! Park! (in! whose! parish! Highlands! Village! is!
situated)! were! consulted! and! they! gave! strong! support! for! a! church!
plant.!
Rev(Andrew(Wadsworth(
On!7th!January!2007!Andrew!Wadsworth!together!with!34!adults!and!
around!20!children!formed!Grace!Church!Highlands.!The!church!meets!in!the!hall!of!Highlands!!School!
and!has!grown!to!have!69!on!its!electoral!roll.!
In! October! 2013,! Grace! Church! became! fully! independent! from! Christ! Church! Cockfosters! under! a!
“Bishop’s!Mission!Order”!and!its!own!charitable!status.!On!5th!January!2014,!the!Bishop!of!London,!Dr!
Richard!Chartres,!visited!Grace!Church!to!formally!confirm!its!independent!status.!
!
We!give!thanks!to!the!Lord!for!blessing!our!two!church!plants!as!they!have!enabled!the!Gospel!to!be!
taken!to!many!who!would!not!otherwise!have!heard!the!good!news!!

”Let"the"little"children"come"to"me”:""Children"and"Youth"Work!
"
Work"amongst"children"
Christ!Church!has!had!a!Sunday!School!for!as!long!as!anyone!can!remember.!Until!the!1960s,!this!met!
on!a!Sunday!afternoon,!when!large!numbers!of!children!would!meet!in!Church!House!for!their!Sunday!
School! “lessons”.! By! the! 1960s,! however,! it! was! thought! that! it! would! be! more! appropriate! for! the!
children!to!meet!at!the!same!time!as!their!parents!were!attending!church.!So!the!time!of!the!Sunday!
School!was!changed!to!coincide!with!the!morning!service!which,!in!those!days,!started!at!11am.!The!
children!would!meet!in!Church!House!but!not!normally!join!their!parents!in!the!church.!
From!1987!the!children!came!into!the!first!part!of!the!main!service!(by!now!starting!at!10.30am)!and!
left! for! their! Sunday! School! after! the! first! 15! minutes.! From! 2003,! this! was! changed! so! the! children!
now!join!the!adults!in!church!at!the!end!of!the!service.!
Our! strong! tradition! of! work! amongst! children! continues! today! and,! in!
recent! years,! this! work! has! been! lead! by! our! Children’s! Minister.! Our!
first!Children’s!Minister!was!Suzanne!Wooller!and!she!was!succeeded!by!
Fiona! Gibson! and! today! Ashley! Nichols! fulfils! this! important! role.! The!
groups! which! meet! on! a! Sunday! come! under! the! “Kids! Planet”! banner!
and!cater!for!children!aged!0!to!10!years.The!groups!are!divided,!by!age,!
into! “Little! Stars”,! “Shooting! Stars”,! “Rockets”! and! “Cosmic”.! An!
important! element! of! this! ministry! is! forging! links! with! the! whole!

The!history!of!Scouting!in!Cockfosters!dates!back!to!the!very!early!days!of!the!
Scout! movement.! The! First! Cockfosters! Scout! Troop! was! started! in! Heddon!
Court! School! in! March! 1924! by! Henry! Frampton! Stallard,! headmaster! of! the!
school! and! churchwarden! of! Christ! Church! Cockfosters.! This! Scout! Troop!
closed!with!the!closure!of!the!school!in!1931.!
!
The!Second!Cockfosters!Scout!Group!(later!to!become!the!11th!Southgate!Group)!was!formed!on!12th!
April!1927!and!was!attached!to!Christ!Church!Cockfosters.!The!Scoutmaster!was!Mr!C!N!Ross.!By!1950,!
the! group! was! reported! to! have! 24! Wolf! Cubs,! 14! Boy! Scouts,! and! 2! Senior! Scouts.! In! 1951! the! first!
Cockfosters!“Gang!Show”!took!place!and!these!continued!until!1979.!

On! 8th! May! 1954,! the! first! Scout! Hut! was! opened!
adjacent! to! Church! House.! This! was! a! wooden!
structure!which!was!replaced!by!the!current!Scout!HQ!

When!Robert!Bevan!commissioned!the!building!of!Christ!Church,!he!also!commissioned!the!building!of!
a! school.! This! was! built! on! the! site! of! the! current! school! playground! and! opened! in! 1838,! one! year!
before!the!church!was!completed.!At!its!opening!it!provided!education!for!boys!aged!6!to!9!years!and!
girls!aged!6!to!12!years.!For!many!years!it!was!known!as!the!“Girls!School”.!

In! 1859! the! “Boys! School”! opened! on! the!
site! currently! occupied! by! the! BP! /! Marks!
and!Spencer!petrol!station,!which!had!been!

Bible,! and! the! Discover! courses! and! small! group! Bible! studies.! We! thank! God! that! our! children! and!
young! people! turn! up! excited! by! the! fabulous! teaching! they! receive! on! Sunday,! and! for! those! who!
teach!Bible!stories!and!encourage!faith!in!our!preschool!and!at!Trent!School.!
There!will!be!continuing!debates!in!the!Church!of!England!about!how!to!interpret!the!Bible!today.!But!
wouldn’t!it!be!amazing!if!in!years!to!come!Christ!Church!has!a!congregation!not!only!bigger,!but!deeper(
because!the!hunger!to!know!God!grips!more!of!us!than!ever?!

3. Welcome(of(all(in(Jesus’(Name(
Acts!2:42!urges!us!to!be!a!“fellowship”!or!community!of!ChristTfollowers.!A!church!which!shares!life!
together!with!no!reservations,!no!prejudices,!no!favouritism.!!
This!is!absolutely!vital!in!our!welcome!of!children.!In!an!age!when!most!churches!in!our!country!have!
less!than!ten!children!attending!we!are!blessed!to!have!so!many!families!and!children!among!us.!More!
than!ever!in!a!secularising!culture!where!the!Christian!story!is!largely!unknown!and!often!ridiculed,!it!
is!imperative!that!young!people!grow!up!knowing!about!Jesus!and!His!message.!!
We! also! live! in! a! fragmented! city! full! of! ethnic! diversity,! where! fear! of! the! stranger! is! becoming!
dominant.! But! as! Jesus’! people! we! delight! to! welcome! fellow! worshippers! from! every! continent! and!
colour!into!our!community!of!faith.!In!a!segregated!world,!our!unity!across!our!differences!proclaims!
the!uniting!power!of!Christ!and!His!manifold!wisdom.!!
So! we! dream! of! a! day! when! the! Church! leads! the! way! and! Sunday! morning! is! the! time! of! the! week!
when!London!is!most!united!as!all!ages!and!races!join!in!praise.!

4. Willing(to(invest(for(the(sake(of(others(
When!we!first!seriously!dreamt!about!planting!a!new!church!nearly!a!decade!ago!there!were!several!
meetings!where!we!agonised!about!the!sacrifice!this!would!mean.!A!defining!moment!came!when!one!
of! our! members! said,! “We! have! to! do! this! because,! hard! as! it! will! be! for! us,! we! are! not! here! for!
ourselves!but!for!the!lost!people!who!need!this!new!church”.!
That!commitment!to!“being"here"for"others"not"for"ourselves”!has!often!defined!our!decisions!over!
the!years,!from!planting!Grace!Church!Highlands!to!redeveloping!Christ!Church!House.!But!I!see!it!also!
in!the!amazing!commitment!of!so!many!church!members!who!volunteer!time,!gifts!and!energy.!They!
get!it:!we!are!not!here!for!ourselves!but!to!serve!Jesus!in!reaching!the!lost.!!
Imagine!what!God!can!do!if!this!spirit!of!investing!our!best!time,!talents!and!resources!for!Christ!goes!
even!deeper!in!our!church!family?!I!think!we!all!know!that!the!church!building!is!in!desperate!need!of!
modernising! and! extending! so! that! the! next! generation! can! hear! about! Jesus! and! build! community!
here.! There! will! be! further! defining! moments! like! that! too,! and! it! is! my! prayer! that! the! spirit! that! is!
decisive!in!those!moments!will!be!the!one!that!is!willing!to!invest!for!the!sake!of!others.!

5. Working(in(compassion(for(the(needy(
We!long!to!express!the!compassion!of!God!today.!It!has!been!a!joy!to!help!some!of!the!world’s!poorest!
children! through! our! partnership! with! Compassion! church! projects! in! Uganda,! and! hardTpressed!
Christians!in!hostile!regions!through!Barnabas(Fund.(Recently!the!economic!downturn!has!made!us!a!
leaner!church!in!trimming!what!we!spend,!but!positively!it!has!moved!us!to!make!a!difference!in!Jesus’!
Name!for!the!poor!around!us!through!ministries!like!the!local!Barnet!churches’!Foodbank.!
Experts!debate!whether!the!world!is!becoming!poorer,!but!one!thing!is!clear:!the!lonely,!the!hurting!
and! the! poor! (as! Jesus! said)! will! always! be! with! us.! Our! vision! in! years! to! come! is! to! show! God’s!
compassion! for! those! in! need,! locally! or! worldwide.! How! many! children! can! we! sponsor,! how! much!
can! we! give! to! those! persecuted! for! Christ! in! other! lands,! how! can! we! show! the! love! of! Christ! in!
compassion!for!the!people!of!our!own!area?!
!
It!was!as!a!medical!student!that!I!was!given!the!challenge!by!an!older!Christian,!“How!is!your!life!going!
to!make!an!eternal!difference?!What!can!you!do!that!will!last!forever?”!That!conversation!led!Carole!
and!me!in!the!end!to!conclude!that!we!could!make!most!difference!in!the!lives!of!others!for!eternity!by!
being!available!to!Jesus!Christ,!sharing!His!message!and!seeing!Him!build!His!Church.!
Perhaps!we!can!conclude!by!asking!you!the!same!question:!How!is!your!life!going!to!make!an!eternal!
difference?!How!can!you!help!us!become!and!do!all!Jesus!plans!for!us?!What"can"you"do"that"will"last"
forever?!Are!you!engaging!regularly!with!God’s!Word,!witnessing!to!Jesus!among!the!lost,!welcoming!
the!newcomer,!willing!to!invest!for!others!and!working!for!the!needy?!
None!of!us!will!ever!regret!a!life!fully!given!to!God!in!worship.!So!hand!Him!the!pen!and!let!him!write!
