Cabot Trail
Cabot Trail

Hike, golf and dance the Highlands.
“I
have travelled the globe. I have seen the
Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and
the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for
simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.”
—Alexander Graham Bell
The natural beauty of the highlands provides the
perfect backdrop for outdoor activities such as
golfing, kayaking, hiking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, skiing, and snowmobiling. And don’t
forget motorcycling! The Cabot Trail was featured
in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice for Best
Motorcycle Trip in 2014.
The Cabot Trail’s natural beauty is only outdone by the
area’s unique culture and unrivalled hospitality. You’ll
feel like a local after attending a ceilidh and hearing
some of Cape Breton’s finest musicians. Be sure to
wear your dancing shoes, because you’ll be up learning how to step or square dance with new friends in
no time. By the end of your stay, you may even know
a few words of Gaelic.
Plan to spend at least three days along the Cabot
Trail, where you’ll discover how Nova Scotia, or “New
Scotland,” got its name.

Cabot Trail
Golfers will never forget a day at the Stanley Thompson–
designed Highlands Links, consistently ranked as one
of the ten best golf courses in Canada. For a different perspective, take a guided kayak tour along the
highlands of Northern Cape Breton. One of the most
spectacular paddling destinations in North America,
this remote and rugged coast offers imposing cliffs of
ancient bedrock, which feature waterfalls, sea caves,
and towering arches.
Some of the best hiking opportunities in Nova Scotia
are found in the Cape Breton Highlands National
Park, with 26 trails for all interests and abilities. For a
truly spectacular sunset view, take part in the Skyline
Sunset Hike. This guided hike leads you to the top of a
mountain headland, overlooking the ocean as the sun
slowly dips into the horizon. The beauty of the highlands inspires many artisans living around the Cabot
Trail. Stop in to watch them create their art, or try one
of the hands-on workshops such as Glass Blowing at
Glass Artisans Studio & Gallery (see page 166).

Not-To-Be-Missed Experiences
There are many special hands-on activities along the nearly 300 kilometres of the worldfamous Cabot Trail. These suggestions will ensure that you miss nothing along the way.
First flights, kites, and White Glove Tours
Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site,
Baddeck
Explore the life and work of this great teacher, scientist,
and inventor. On display is a reproduction of Bell’s
Silver Dart, the first plane ever to fly in Canada (c. 1909).
Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Bell’s life by taking
part in the White Glove Tour, or build and fly your own tetrahedral kite. Now in its second season Bells of Baddeck is
a music-drama, portraying the story of inventor Alexander
Graham Bell and his wife Mabel, who came to Cape
Breton and fell in love with its people, music and Gaelic
charm. Runs July 2–August 6 (see page 165).
Bite into local cuisine
Delve into la vie acadienne
Les Trois Pignons, Chéticamp
Chéticamp’s Acadian history and culture come alive
through its world-famous hooked rugs and antiquities. The site also offers a genealogy resource centre,
a library, and a full range of visitor information services
(see page 165).

100-km Menu at Chanterelle Country Inn & Cottages,
Baddeck
Prepare a feast in the Chanterelle kitchen using ingredients, sourced from within 100 kilometres of the Inn, that
you picked out at the Baddeck Farmers’ Market with the
Chef. Fresh meat, fish, and produce are ready to be
sliced, diced, and cooked to perfection. Enjoy your meal
paired with Nova Scotian wines (see pages 164 & 167).

Outdoor Adventures
The Cabot Trail is a nature-lover’s paradise, so get out and enjoy all it has to offer for explorers
of every fitness level. Turn to page 167 for a complete listing of Cabot Trail’s outdoor adventures.
Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Explore dozens of hiking trails—there is one for every
experience level—and keep an eye out for bald eagles
and moose as you wind your way through the park on
the Cabot Trail. Pack a picnic and take your time soaking
in scenic vistas of sky meeting sea or stay a few days
at one of the many campsites throughout the park. To
make your outdoor stay easier, book an oTENTik or
equipped camping site (see pages 167 & 168).
Salmon fishing on the Margaree River
For generations, anglers have been lured to the Margaree’s
tumbling rapids, deep pools, and still marshes. This popularity has attracted the TV show The New Fly Fisher, which
chose the Margaree River as its first Nova Scotia location.
One of the fishing guides who can help visitors try their
luck is at Margaree Riverview Inn, which is located in
Margaree Forks within 10 minutes of some of the island’s
best salmon pools (see pages 161 & 167).
Kayaking off Northern Cape Breton
One of the most spectacular paddling destinations in
North America, this remote and rugged coast offers
magnificent cliffs, sea caves, unique rock formations, and
the occasional whale passerby. The challenging nature of
this environment is only suited for experienced paddlers,
and a guided tour is recommended (see page 206 for a list
of tour operators).
Go kayaking to evoke your inner artist
in Baddeck
Dipping your paddle alongside seals and seabirds,
while surrounded by our coastal cliffs, can bring out
the artist in anyone. North River Kayak Tours offers tours
like The Songwriting Kayaker and The Painted Kayaker
(see page 207).
Whalewatching
novascotia.com
Cabot Trail
Moose
Pods of Atlantic pilot whales spend their summers
gorging on squid just off the shores of Pleasant Bay and
Chéticamp. Book a Zodiac tour to get up close and
personal with these highly social sea creatures, which
are likely to be as intrigued by you as you are by them.
Along with many species of whales, chances are you’ll
see porpoises, seals, and seabirds while out on the
open water. The best times to see whales are in the
summer and fall months (see pages 204–205).

Hike into the sunset at Cape Breton Highlands
National Park
One of Destination Canada’s Signature Experiences,
the guided Skyline Sunset Hike will lead you out to one
of the best views in the province, on top of a mountain
headland, overlooking the ocean at sunset. For more
information call 902-224-4227 (Chéticamp) or
902-285-2535 (Ingonish Beach).
Puffin-Viewing Boat Tour
These cute, stocky seabirds summer in large colonies
on coastal cliffs and rocky offshore islands before making their way south in the fall. Due to the remoteness
of their nesting areas, a boat tour to sites like the Bird
Islands—Hertford and Ciboux—is the best way to view
them. Donelda’s Bird Island Puffin Tours in Englishtown
would be happy to welcome you aboard (see page 205).
Cycling the Cabot Trail
Hiking on Franey Mountain
Sail the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Reserve
Cabot Trail
While visiting the lakeside community of Baddeck,
set sail with Amoeba Sailing Tours or Sailing CBI to
explore the Bras d’Or Lake. This large inland sea is part
fresh- and part saltwater, allowing it to sustain diverse
ecosystems and wildlife, including many bald eagles
(see page 204).
novascotia.com
Named one of the top ten cycling destinations in the
world by Lonely Planet, the Cabot Trail is a must-do on
every cycling enthusiast’s itinerary. The 300 kilometres
of paved roads take you along rolling terrain and up
steep hills, all with a view of the open ocean. There
are a variety of tour packages available to help you
make the most of this epic excursion. If you prefer an
independent adventure, head to Vélo Max Cycling in
Chéticamp to rent a bike and pick up cycling supplies
before hitting the hills. Visit cyclenovascotia.ca to
download route maps and GPS coordinates.
See pages 206–207 for a list of tour operators.
