And it all happens at Easter. So, how cool is that? Two days after I stand before you and announce, “He is Risen”….my son and future daughter in law will announce to me, “Dad, this is Brooklyn”. My name is changing. Let’s see….I started out 55 years ago with friends and family calling me, ‘Matty’. My mother (when provoked) would occasionally say rather sternly, ‘Matthew Steven’. My teachers and professors called me ‘Matt’. My name changed while I was in seminary. The church I served while in Florida called me, ‘Intern Matt’. The first parish I served changed my name again….I have been called, ‘Pastor Matt’. The youth groups I have loved throughout the years have enjoyed tagging me with their names, ‘Papa Smurf’, ‘King’, ‘P.M.! My name is changing. A little girl who we will joyously call, ‘Brooklyn’ will one day look into my eyes and say, “Grandpa”. Baby Villar expected in June may say the name with a bit of a southern twang…but to be sure, I will be called, “Grandpa”. It sounds a bit old, but it sounds wonderful. My name is changing. All those names...Matty, Matthew Steven, Matt, Intern Matt, Pastor Matt, Papa Smurf, King, PM…Grandpa…all have brought a smile and a tear at times. However, there is no greater name that I cherish than the name our Risen Lord Jesus has given me and has given you. I am…His child. The Risen Christ walks away from death. He folds up the grave clothes. He rolls away the stone. In our baptism, you and I are marked with the cross of Christ forever, sealed by the power of the Holy Spirit. I am a CHILD OF GOD. My favorite Name. My peace. My assurance. One day, this Grandpa (and a man known by so many other names) will run into the arms of our Savior, and He will call me by the name that has been mine since God placed me in the arms of my mother….HIS CHILD…and all will be perfect. Blessings this Easter! Grandpa & Grandma Lash WORSHIP “I rejoice with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” (Psalm 122: 1) Worship Life In March We are ready for a COME-BACK! The word of the prophet Joel has encouraged each one of us, “Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love!”. A recent visitor to our parish told me she was encouraged to ‘come back’ to a regular worship life because of our Lenten evenings and messages. Thanks be to God! May we continue to be faithful in our worship life. Draw near to God in prayer, fellowship, sacrament and Word. May the Lord bless the upcoming Holy Week & Easter celebration! Worship, Prayer, Pastor’s Message 7:00 p.m. Lent invites you and me to return to the Lord. Is it time for your faith to make a ‘come back’? Trust in God to adjust your heart and change your mind. The 10th Man, Keep your eyes on the coach. Join us on Wednesday evening for prayer and inspirational worship. A VERY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN Among my greatest joys and privileges in parish ministry is to share the good news of Jesus with children. Recently, I have been wondering how a child thinks about the events of Holy Week…the ride into Jerusalem, the betrayal of Judas, the denial of Peter, the last supper, the cross….. Parents, please sign up for “Holy Week Through a Child’s Eyes” on Tuesday, March 22. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. we will enjoy an informal pizza meal with our children. I will lead an hour long interactive walk through Holy week with your children. We will conclude before 7:30 p.m. All ages are invited. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join the experience! Lenten & Holy Week Volunteers There are many opportunities to serve in our worship services during this season of Lent and Holy week. We are looking for volunteers to participate on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Please give your attention to the sign up posted in the Gathering Space and plan to serve! Thank you. Friendship Pad---Please pass it along! A great way to make a new friend! Please share the friendship pad each time you worship! You may update your address with our church office—or indicate a prayer concern, or the desire for a pastoral visit. Pass the pad! Thanks! Did You Know? The audio of the Sunday message is on the web site. If you miss a Sunday and wish to listen to the sermon proclaimed on Sunday—check out our web site, www.commofchrist.org. Diff. 72 February & March Thank You Offering will support the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. More than 800 million people — that’s 1 in 8 people in our world today — are hungry. By providing immediate relief to those who are hungry, we meet basic needs and recognize the universal human right to food. But ending hunger is about more than food. By connecting people with the resources they need to produce food and gain access to clean water, education, health care and sources of income, long-term, sustainable change can be accomplished. Working through ELCA congregations, global companion churches, The Lutheran World Federation and other partners like Bread for the World, Church World Service, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and Lutheran World Relief, the ELCA reaches more places more effectively than we could ever do alone. In addition to funding relief and development projects that assist our sisters and brothers in need, we engage members of the ELCA in education and advocacy to help change the systems that perpetuate poverty. Through this comprehensive approach, we work to address hunger from all angles — both domestically and globally. Picked up 2016 Offering Envelopes?? Your offering box may still be M.I.A.!!! Your box may be in the church office. If you participate in ‘Simply Giving’ we have boxes for you since there are numerous times and dates that ‘Simply Giving’ does not provide an envelope. If you have not picked up your offering box for 2016 or would like a box for your contributions, please come to the church office. We have brand new offering boxes that are begging for a home and an enthusiastic believer! Thank you so much! Gifts of Appreciation Dear Confirmation Friends (especially Eric, Josh & Zach), What a pleasant surprise to receive your poster and notes. The poster is hanging in the living room of my son’s house until I can take it home with me. It certainly has lifted my spirits and I promise to “think positive,” especially about this situation. I do not know the exact date for confirmation but my goal is to be there for your “big” day Eric. Zach, I like the way you wrote my name so fancy. And, yes, I do know your mother well and your father and Avery. You are a lovely family. It is good to hear that you are so athletic Josh. Keep up the good work. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and prayers. I am looking forward to the day I sit in the congregation with you again. Special thanks to Pastor Matt too. Fondly, Joan Bierley To my dear friends at C of C, Thank you for all the cards, calls, and prayers. Your encouragements have been very comforting. Though progress is slow, l am hoping to go home sometime next month. Joan Bierley CHURCH LIFE “They enjoyed the favor of all the people. Music Fund In Loving Memory of Doris Marshall Tim & Dana Schmidt Art History Gathering Space Sculpture This is an original piece created by Joe Boniface who has produced work for clients from coast to coast. Most of the people of Lima know him as the former art instructor at Lima Shawnee High School for the past thirty years. In his “real life”, however, Joe is owner of the Black Swamp Forge, Blacksmithing Studio, where he creates sculptures and functional works; items such as interior and exterior sculptures, entry gates, railings, tables, and a wide variety of specialty items. As a member of The Artist Blacksmith Association of North America, Joe has conducted workshops for blacksmiths in many states from here to California. For our particular piece, a number of preliminary sketches were made. Then work began with forming the crosses of MDF then covering them with a heavy gauge copper that he textured to look like wood. All of the other parts were personally hand forged by Joe from steel. It is fairly heavy so it is held in place by eight fourinch long bolts that are inserted all the way into the brick and concrete block beneath the wallboard. It is also supported on a system that will allow it to be taken down (in four parts) when the wall needs painting again. Notice: a fish (the earliest symbol of Christ), a tongue of flame, a symbol of the triune, Golgotha (the hill of the crucifixion), the river (baptism), a circular nimbus (a kind of a halo), that the sharp angular shapes of the nails and thorns give way to the soft shapes. One of the first idea sketches (left) and Joe at work on this piece (below). 03/01 Happel, Cathy 03/01 McKee, Christine 03/01 Heilmann, Jacob 03/01 Bellner, Sarah 03/02 Huber, Sarah 03/02 Raymond, Alex 03/03 Stiles, Carol 03/03 Donnal, Andrew 03/03 Sohnly, Luke 03/04 Dick, Matthew 03/04 Sheetz, Hannah 03/04 Bertsch, Christopher 03/04 Swagler, Josh 03/05 Olman, Susan 03/05 Smigelski, Bob 03/05 Jones, Zach 03/06 Aubell, Lila 03/06 Alleman, Dave 03/07 Fritz, Alison 03/08 Zimmerman, John 03/08 Ayres, Alexa 03/08 Ayres, Savannah 03/09 Smith, Cindy 03/09 Deacon, Liz 03/09 Abraham, Cammie 03/09 Sheetz, Eilis 03/10 Schmidt, Dana 03/11 Fowler, Marjorie 03/11 Lytle, Tom 03/11 Alleman, Lindsey 03/12 Lytle, Deborah 03/12 Miller, Judy 03/14 Sheetz, Stella 03/15 Grim, Shawn 03/15 Grim, Nathan 03/16 Pontsler, Douglas 03/18 Kegg, Sue 03/18 Jones, Kim 03/18 Carman, Andrew 03/18 Miller, Christopher 03/19 Kegg, Paul 03/20 Pitchford, Lisa 03/21 Kronmann, Cathy 03/21 Ahrens, Adam 03/21 Gehring, Jacob 03/22 Schwartz, Jim 03/23 Smith Jr., Harold 03/23 Dick, David 03/24 Lutz, Kyle 03/24 Nutter, Susan 03/25 Jenkins, Brennan 03/26 Papenfuss, Larry 03/27 Almester, Dolores 03/27 Rober, Roz 03/27 Ruhe, Shannon 03/27 Jones, Avery 03/29 Duty, Janet 03/29 Raymond, Neil 03/30 Karg, Ella 03/31 Kohntopp, Rob March 2016 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 2 3 4 5 8:30am Tuesday Morning Bible Study 5:00pm Confirmation Class 6:15pm Confirmation Bells 1:00pm Ladies Craft Group 6:00pm Soup Supper 7:00pm Lent Worship 7:45pm Adult Choir 8:00pm AA 6:45pm Youth Choir 6:45pm Kids of the Kingdom 7:30pm Adult Bells 3:15pm High School Bells 8:30pm AA 4:00pm Worship/Communion 6:30pm Majestic Oak Winery Event 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 8:00am Worship/Communion 9:15am Sunday School/Music Sunday Gr 1-6 10:00am Worship/Communion 5:00pm CCNWO 7:00pm Bible Study 7:00pm Worship & Music Committee 8:30am Tuesday Morning Bible Study 5:00pm Confirmation Class 6:15pm Confirmation Bells 7:00pm Church Council 10:15am Pr. at Whitehouse Country Manor 12:00pm Staff Lunch/Meeting 1:00pm Ladies Craft Group 6:00pm Soup Supper 7:00pm Lent Worship 7:45pm Adult Choir 8:00pm AA 6:45pm Youth Choir 6:45pm Kids of the Kingdom 7:30pm Adult Bells 12:00pm Blood Drive 3:15pm High School Bells 8:30pm AA 4:00pm Worship/Communion 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 8:00am Worship/Communion 9:15am Sunday School 10:00am Worship/Communion 11:15am Youth Committee 3:00pm CCNWO (WS) 5:00pm CCNWO (WS) 5:30pm Lutheran Social Services Annual Meeting at Hilton Garden Inn 6:00pm Election Day Set-Up 7:00pm Bible Study 6:00am Election Day 8:30am Tuesday Morning Bible Study 1:00pm Book Club 6:30pm Growing/Learning Committee 1:00pm Ladies Craft Group 6:00pm Soup Supper 7:00pm Lent Worship 7:45pm Adult Choir 8:00pm AA 6:45pm Kids of the Kingdom 6:45pm Youth Choir 7:30pm Adult Bells 3:15pm High School Bells 8:30pm AA 4:00pm Worship/Communion 5:30pm BigStuf Gathering 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 Palm Sunday 8:00am Worship/Communion 9:15am Sunday School 10:00am Worship/Communion 8:00am "Bible, Bread & Breakfast" 5:00pm CCNWO 7:00pm Bible Study 8:30am Tuesday Morning Bible Study 5:00pm Confirmation Class/Agape 6:00pm "Holy Week in a Child's Eye" 6:15pm Confirmation Bells 1:00pm Ladies Craft Group 6:30pm Son of God Film 7:15pm Adult Choir 8:00pm AA 1:00pm Flower Delivery 7:00pm Maundy Thursday Worship 8:00pm Adult Bells 12:00pm Good Friday Worship 4:00pm Easter Vigil Worship 7:00pm Good Friday Worship 8:30pm AA 27 28 29 30 31 Easter 8:00am Worship/Communion 9:15am Sunday School 10:00am Worship/Communion Pam Vacation Pr.
