Russia.
McLaughlin teamed up
with Ryan Murphy, Kevin Cordes,

McLaughlin was leading
the final of the women’s 200-meter butterfly after 150 meters, but
faded during the last 50 meters to
finish sixth in 2:06.95, a personal
best time. Although her time was
under the previous World Junior

Mission Viejo Nadadores
Samantha Shelton, Grant Shoults,
and Coach Rose represented Team
USA at the FINA World Junior
Championships held August 25-30
in Singapore. After qualifying two
swimmers to the USA World Junior
Team, Coach Rose was named as
one of the coaches of the World
Junior Team. Shoults, a returning USA Junior Team member
from 2014, was named one of the
team captains. As captain, he led
by example, earning a silver, two
golds, and one World Junior Record. Shoults was World Junior
Champion, winning the gold in his
first individual event, the men’s
400-meter freestyle in 3:48.91. He
finished more than a second ahead
of the closest competitor, Jintong
Yang from China who finished in
3:50.05. Shoults just missed the
pool record of 3:47.12 set in 2013
by Australia’s Mack Horton.
Shelton swam the prelims
of the women’s 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay, where the USA team
finished first in 8:01.43. Shelton’s
lead-off split was 2:01.24. Shelton
did not swim the relay in finals,
where the USA team of Lauren
Case, Melissa Pish, Tatum Wade,
and Hannah Cox bettered the time
from prelims, but finished fourth in
7:57.84.
On the second day of the
meet, Shoults earned a silver medal
in the men’s 200-meter freestyle,
completing the USA sweep of the
event. Rooney Maxime won in
1:47.78 and Shoults was second in
1:48.42. Maxime went out faster
than Shoults in the first 100 meters.
Shoults was faster than Maxime in
the second half of the race, but did
not have enough speed to overcome the 1.01 second lead Maxime
had at the 100.
In the men’s 4 x 200-meter
freestyle relay, Shoults led-off with
a 1:48.10 to give the U.S. team the
lead, and Rooney, Sean Grieshop,
and Grant House extended that lead
to finish in 7:13.36, four seconds
ahead of the Australians, who finished second. The U.S. relay team’s
time was a new World Junior
Record and a new pool record. The
previous mark of 7:15.36 was set
by Great Britain in 2013.

In May, the Mission Viejo
Nadadores held their annual Swima-Thon fundraiser. This year the
Nadadores used the money raised
toward the purchase of new lane
lines for the 50-meter pool.
Prizes were awarded to the
swimmers who raised the most
money during the Swim-a-Thon.
First prize went to Maddie Tourtlotte who raised $1025. She won
a Sony Playstation. Zoe Le raised
$920 and won the second prize,
which was a pair of Bose noise
cancelling headphones.Third prize,

on the shore instead of practice one
afternoon.

Nadadores in USAS AG All-Time Top 100
On August 15, 2015, USA Swimming named its Age Group All-Time Top
100 swimmers. USA Swimming has recognized the fastest swimmers in
each age group since 1965. The Mission Viejo Nadadores were founded
in 1968. Since that time, the Nadadores have placed several swimmers
on either the USA Swimming top 16 (1965-1999) or the top 10 (2000+)
list. In 2000, USA Swimming limited the list to the fastest 10, rather than
the fastest 16 swimmers each year. Each of the Nadadores listed below
was on either the top 16 or top 10 list for their year, and remain one of the
fastest 100 swimmers to ever make the top 16/10 list. Additionally, USA
Swimming only began to recognize the 800-meter freestyle; 1000-yard
freestyle; 1500-meter freestyle; 1650-yard freestyle; and the 200 backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, and 400 individual medley in yards and
meters for the 11-12 age group in 2000.

Nadadores Welcome Special
Olympic Swimmers
Nadadores in the 9-10 age group served as ambassadors to the visiting
Special Olympians.
The City of Mission Viejo
hosted delegations from Spain and
Indonesia for the Special Olympics
World Summer Games held in Los
Angeles July 25 through August
2. The Mission Viejo Nadadores
were honored to share the Marguerite Aquatics Complex with the
remarkable swimmers from these
two countries as they conducted
their final preparations for competition. The Nadadores 9-10 year-old
swimmers welcomed the Special
Olympic swimmers with towels
from the 2015 TYR Fran Crippen
Memorial Swim Meet of Champions. According to Nadadores Office Manager, Ruby Hunter, “The
visiting athletes were thrilled with
the towels.” SMOC towels are a
highly prized item in the swimming
community. Additionally, each of
the young Nadadores swimmers
wished each of the Olympians a
personal “good luck” as they prepared for their competition.

Summer Satellite and Novice/

Raine Takes on
Junior Guards
Analise Raine.
Nadadores go all out racing in their summer championship meet.
On August 8, 2015 the
Nadadores welcomed 200 swimmers from the six different Summer Satellite teams to participate
in their final meet of the summer.
The Novice and Transition Division welcomed the teams from
Lake Forest, Sierra, Rancho Santa
Margarita, Canyon Crest, Dove
Canyon, and Las Flores. Despite
the heat, swimmers swam best
times and were able to compete in
relays for their home teams. Heat
winners got to choose between rubber ducks or candy as their prize,
and the top eight finishers were
awarded ribbons. Coach Sarah and
Coach Emi came out to cheer on
the Nadadores. Coach Jacqueline
sends a special thanks to all the
parents who helped to make this
meet possible.
After the meet, swimmers
from the Satellite Summer Program
were offered a chance to join the
Nadadores to see what it is like
on a year round program. These
swimmers will start in the Novice and Transition Division with
Coach Jacqueline, Coach Rebekah,
and Coach Brittany. Thirty swimmers joined the Nadadores to help
advance their skills and continue
in their swimming careers. They
will participate in the Novice and
Transition Meets and all the fun
activities that the Nadadores are a
part of.
Analise Raine who trained
with the Transition Gold Group
during the summer, participated in
the Junior Lifeguards Program at
Salt Creek Beach last summer. In
a beach competition, she took 11th
place overall and was the secondfastest girl out of the water. Raine
now trains with the Barcelona
group and hopes to be even faster
with Coach Emi and the rest of her
Nadadores teammates.

Evan Czaja Earns Eagle Scout
Evan Czaja.
Evan Czaja, a swimmer in
the Rio Group, earned his Eagle
Scout rank recently. Evan’s project was to restore and beautify the
outdoor area of the Sunrise Senior
Living Center in Mission Viejo.
Evan chose this project because
while volunteering at the Center,
he noticed that the outdoor area
needed some care and attention.
Through the Boy Scouts,
Evan has had the opportunity to
engage in many community service
projects, grow his leadership skills,
and experience multiple outdoor
adventures as he earned 24 additional merit badges.

Every single Nadador is an important part of our team. Every Nadador, whether just starting a swimming
career or world champion, began their journey the same way—blowing bubbles and floating. There are over 300,000
USA Swimming registered members and over a million competitive swimmers throughout the world started swimming
the same manner. Along the way, most of us master the four competitive strokes, listen, and train hard. As a result, we
experience success. Our level of success depends on talent, commitment to rigorous training and effective technique,
sound nutritional habits, time management skills, and mental toughness. Those who consistently work for the incremental changes that take them from bubble blowing and floating to greatness, tend to have higher levels of success.
At the Mission Viejo Nadadores, we are immersed in a culture of success at a very high level. Because we are
immersed in that culture on a daily basis, we can become apathetic and take it for granted. The Nadadores have placed
at least one athlete on every U.S. Olympic Team since 1972 (plus several others on foreign Olympic teams). We are the
only non-government-sponsored club to do that. Most clubs are lucky to have one, or maybe two Olympians, and that
is a great accomplishment. Most USA Swimming clubs have never produced even one Olympian. No other club in the
world has even come close to the number of Olympians the Nadadores have produced. That is a remarkable achievement, but many of us take it for granted.
I have been blessed with the opportunity to coach multiple Olympic, World Championship, and World Junior
Championship teams for the U.S. The swimmers who compete on those teams earn their way onto those teams by competing with the best of the 300,000 plus swimmers in the U.S. and finishing in the top two (up to top six for freestyle
relays). They earn their spots with the commitment and sacrifices they make on a daily basis for several years prior to
the competition.
We have been fortunate this summer to have placed three swimmers on U.S. teams—Katie McLaughlin on the
U.S. World Championship Team and Grant Shoults and Samantha Shelton on the U.S. World Junior Championship
Team. These swimmers not only made the team, they excelled as they competed on the world stage.
There were 184 countries that had athletes competing in the World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Katie
McLaughlin won a gold medal in the women’s 800 free relay, a silver medal in the mixed 400 medley relay, and finished sixth in the 200 fly. Out of over a million swimmers in the world, Katie was the best, second best, and sixth best.
That accomplishment didn’t come for free. She earned it.
At World Junior Championships, 102 countries competed. Grant Shoults was one of the team captains for
the U.S. Team. I saw first-hand as a coach of the U.S. World Junior Championship team that Grant was a great leader
of the group. Grant dropped four seconds from his best time to win the gold medal in the 400 free. He dropped two
seconds to win the silver in the 200 free. He lowered his 200 free time even more as he led off the gold-medal, World
Junior Record-setting 800 free relay. Those accolades weren’t a gift. Grant earned every one of them.
At just 15-years old, Samantha Shelton earned her way onto two relay teams at the World Junior Championships—the 400 free relay and the 800 free relay. Samantha swam in the prelims on both relays, helping her team make
it to finals. Samantha also earned this accomplishment. She races to win every repeat in practice like it’s a race, and
had done that for years.
We have three people on our team right now who have shown this summer that they are among the best in the
world. They have worked hard consistently and earned it. All three have qualifying times for the Olympic Trials in
2016. Look for them to continue to work hard for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team next year.
Although the Nadadores have things we can improve on and are continuously working to improve on to help
all of our swimmers succeed, the world sees the Mission Viejo Nadadores by our consistent presence on the world
swimming stage. People from around the world know about Mission Viejo, California and the Nadadores because of
the accomplishments of these three swimmers and all of the world class Nadadores swimmers that have come before
them. We are all part of a truly special organization, and we shouldn’t take that experience for granted.
The good news for everyone is that there is no magic formula for being the best in the world. The formula is
available to anyone and everyone who wants it. The reality is that we are all part of one very large swimming community, and a very small percentage of those swimmers really want to put in the effort on a consistent daily basis over
many years to achieve these types of results. However, you can make a choice right now to work for the incremental
changes that lead to success to hone your on talent, commitment to rigorous training and effective technique, sound nutritional habits, time management skills, and mental toughness to become a world class swimmer just like Katie, Grant,
and Samantha. The next generation of Nadadores to represent our team on the world stage can include you.

Team Records Broken
As we start our competition year, we update our team
records. Over the past year, many
of the Mission Viejo Nadadores
team records have been broken. Here’s a look at those new
records. For a complete list of
records, visit the team records
section of our website at https://

You probably know the
Mission Viejo Nadadores as an
awesome swim team that dominates the pool. Although that is
true, the Nadadores also compete
outside of the pool. Nadadores
masters swimmers compete in
open water events and triathlons
in addition to or instead of pool
swimming. Here’s a sampling of
what our athletes have done over
the summer outside of the pool.

Wendy Theders and Audrey Viers were part of a team that
crossed the Catalina Channel, a
20-mile open water course, on July
20th. Their swim began at midnight
and lasted about 12 hours.
There were several open
water races over the summer,
including the Escape from Alcatraz
Sharkfest swim where seven Nadadores competed. Miguel Ramirez,
Suzi Fitzpatric, and Dan Forster all
won their age groups.
17
Nadadores also competed
in triathlons. Kelly Cavliari competed in several triathlons over the
summer and is currently training
for the Lake Tahoe Ironman September 20. Ed Evans and Scott
Kolka have competed in the Ironman Arizona, athe the 70.3 in St.
George, UT among their many
accomplishments. Katy Buckley
is training for her first Ironman in
Oceanside. Chris Willson has completed three Vineman full triathlons
and will also compete in the Lake
Tahoe Ironman soon. Alex Arrow
competed in the Wildflower long
course triathlon three times and the
Pacitfic Coast Triathlon with Katy
Buckley September 13.
