CHOREOGRAPHED SOLITUDE Emerging onto the scene around a decade after the first new wave of Taiwanese cinema (embodied by Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao Hsien), Tsai Ming-Liang’s early films immediately established an intimate and solitary universe that is both restrained yet raw, conveyed through the recurring melancholy, burlesque character played by the actor Lee Kang-Sheng. Whether suffering in silence from a mysterious ailment (THE RIVER), observing his downstairs neighbor through a hole in the floor (THE HOLE), desperately trying to sell watches on a bridge (WHAT TIME IS IT THERE?), or simply riding a scooter through the streets of Taipei, the classical central figure of Tsai Ming-Liang’s cinema is an almost mute young man, in the grip of a worldly, profound, mysterious and enduring sadness. He usually has the same features (the character’s name is Hsiao Kang; the actor’s Lee Kang-Sheng), a contemporary Léaud-Doinel whose progress has been followed from 1992 until today. Twenty years to embody different variations around the same character, whose nonchalance, burlesque gait, daring shyness and taste for obsession was likeable from the beginning. An alter ego for the filmmaker, renewed from one film to the next to help him explore his own inner self and his relationship with the world. A genuine character’s journey, unique in cinema over so many years, from a lonely Taiwanese ragamuffin (REBELS OF THE NEON GOD) to family man (STRAY DOGS) and Buddhist monk (JOURNEY TO THE WEST, screened in February 2014 at the Berlin Film Festival). 5 Tsai Ming-Liang was born in 1957 in Malaysia, six years before his country achieved independence, in the little village of Kuching, which means “the cat” in Malay. That’s where he spent the first 20 years of his life and began attending movie theaters, mainly to see the action movies of the Shaw Brothers (to whom he paid homage in GOODBYE DRAGON INN, a reference to DRAGON GATE INN by King Hu). His filmic education continued in Taipei, where he went to study aged 20. It was then that he discovered the many classics of European and American cinema. After his studies, he directed several TV films with teenagers, non-professional actors among whom was Lee KangSheng. REBELS OF THE NEON GOD, his first theatrical feature film, laid the esthetic and topographic foundations of his filmmaking style. Taipei by night or by day; his vibrant neighborhood of Ximending at dawn or dusk; bedrooms, bathrooms and toilet bowls; taciturn youths on scooters; a son (Lee) and his parents (played by Lu Hsiao-Ling and Miao Tien, regular collaborators for the director); rain and flooding (the aquatic leitmotif is recurrent); sex (people make love a lot in Tsai Ming-Liang’s films); and above all, that particular way of setting up a temporality, of creating a narrative without seeming to, turning what would usually be called time standing still into full time, rich with emotions as contradictory as despair or hope. A narrative of emotions and bodies. BODIES WHICH TELL A STORY Tsai Ming-Liang’s films require a great deal of attention. The faces and gestures of the youths, the choreographed precision with which they move through space, detail their story as much as they inscribe them in a contemporary melancholy. (In this respect, we could notably cite the appropriately named VISAGE, which could just as easily have been called BODY.) For a spectator familiar with Tsai Ming-Liang’s work, an anodyne scene in one film can take on overwhelming resonance some years later in another. At the start of REBELS OF THE NEON GOD, the father is eating a tray of fruits on the street with his son. A simple moment, without dialogue. The father looks at the son, and gives him a few more pieces. This act, quite beautiful in itself, and some other shared moments between father and son in this debut film, acquire a moving density over time as we get to know the characters and grow closer to them through the subsequent films (especially THE RIVER and WHAT TIME IS IT THERE? in which the relationship with the father is in sharp relief). A bank of emotional memories builds up throughout these films and engenders a particular attachment in the spectator for these characters. A Golden Lion in Venice for VIVE L’AMOUR in 1994 put Tsai Ming-Liang among directors to follow, and above all confirmed the intense elegance of his approach. Once again, in this major film, it is the actors’ bodies which tell the story, only this time in a more structured way, with the three main characters indulging in a game of hide-and-seek in an empty apartment. Emotional relationships are complicated, but sexual relationships simplified. A MUSICAL RYTHM The role of intimacy is essential in Tsai Ming-Liang’s films, and is often displayed in a raw, fullfrontal manner, stripping the characters bare in the proper sense (the opening and closing scenes of THE WAYWARD CLOUD, for example) as well as figuratively (the characters’ recurrent moral solitude, as it is expressed perhaps rather more radically in THE HOLE through its two main characters). The end of THE RIVER - arguably one of his most beautiful films, describing an incestuous father-son relationship - is certainly in this register one of the most powerful sequences that he has ever shot, as crude as it is discreet. This dramatic highpoint also illustrates the very musical way Tsai Ming-Liang constructs his films during editing, as if his shots were 6 tectonic plates, calm in appearance, but actually crashing together to end up in an emotional earthquake. True, music is present in his films, especially in his obvious homages to popular Chinese songs (the closing credits of GOODBYE DRAGON INN, the musical numbers in THE HOLE or THE WAYWARD CLOUD), but the internal lifeblood of his cinema is musical and poetic, as evidenced for example in WHAT TIME IS IT THERE?, rich with rhymes, ruptures, echoes and choreography. Over time, Tsai Ming-Liang’s œuvre has developed, adapting to commissions from museums (The Louvre), schools (Le Fresnoy), or festivals (the Hong Kong Film Festival). It has become fresco, song, or intimate soap opera. This tribute is the occasion to verify how precious it is to us. Born in 1961 in Okayama (Japan), Hideo Nakata graduated from the University of Tokyo and initially planned to become an engineer or a journalist. A selftrained filmmaker, he worked on various film sets before starting his career as an assistant director at Nikkatsu Studio where he worked for seven years under director Masaru Konuma. He gained experience directing for television (GOD’S HAND in 1992 and three short films for the TV docu-fiction TRUE TERRIFYING STORIES). In 1996, he made his feature film debut with GHOST ACTRESS which incorporated many of the supernatural trademark elements for which he would become best known. With RING, he emerged as one of the world’s most influential horror film directors. Based on a trilogy of novels by a fright-master Suzuki Koji, the film has become the most successful horror movie in the history of Japanese cinema. In 2002, RING spawned DreamWorks’ successful US remake, THE RING. In 1999, the same year he directed RING 2, Nakata switched gears to direct the crime drama Chaos. He thereafter directed SLEEPING BRIDE, the movie adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga, and tried his hand at S&M documentary, SADISTIC AND MASOCHISTIC, a praise to his mentor Konuma Masaru. In 2001, he directed LAST SCENE, a film shot in video about a mute cinema actor playing for television. Returning to his roots in 2002, he directed DARK WATER, based on a novel by Ring’s Suzuki Koji and which gave way to a remake in 2005 by Walter Salles. In 2004, Nakata made his American directing debut with DreamWorks’ THE RING 2. He returned to Japan in 2006 to direct KAIDAN and remained there to direct L CHANGE THE WORLD a spin-off of the widely popular Death Note series, which went on to box-office success in Japan. His latest English language film, CHATROOM starring Aaron Johnson was selected to the Un Certain Regard section at the 2010 Festival de Cannes. The same year, he directed THE INCITE MILL, a psychological suspense movie based on Honobu Yonezawa’s bestseller. © 2014 “MONSTERZ” FILM PARTNERS 8 In 2012, he returned to his favourite genre, the fantastic, with THE COMPLEX, where a young woman who just moved in a creepy building is confronted with ghostly spirits. The Deauville Asian Film Festival features the world premiere of his latest film MONSTERZ, a remake of Kim Min-suk’s korean film Haunters (2010), to be released in Japan in May 2014. The genesis of Mazda is closely linked to its homeland due to the historical roots of the brand in Hiroshima. Mazda's wish is therefore logically to promote far-eastern culture to the French public, and is involved once again in the festival as a support for its deve lopment. At Mazda, as elsewhere in Japan, the designer's hand is irreplaceable and his talent is continually striving for perfection. As with the Festival du Film Asiatique which highlights new talents, Mazda encourages its engineers to make continuing progress in the optimisation of their know-how. The unique atmosphere of the racetrack and the beach, the great amount of activities concerning sports and cultural events, an eclectic architecture and a festive spirit, these are the ingredients that turn a town into a muse for writers, filmmakers, photographers and fashion designers. They like to gather there and transcribe their perceptions with generosity. Strong by this constant and rewarding relationship, Deauville chose, in 1975, to play an active role in the world of creation. Then Deauville put its notoriety to serve the cinema – American, then Asian (since 1999) – which the town promotes and supports with the great success we know. A promotion turned to the general public for which was created in 2013 the Public Award, giving an extra chance to the films presented to be acknowledged. In the same way, many other cultural events were born in all of the artistic fields. A strong commitment with now six festivals which: - Explores the American and Asian cinemas, - Invites young generations of musicians in residence during the Easter Festival and Musical August (both classical music festivals) - Emphasizes the links between literature and music with the Books & Musics Festival, - Offers an eclectic program with its Cultural season - Invites photographers to focus their look on Deauville during the photo festival Planche(s) Contact www.deauville.fr 44 Press release TSAI MING-LIANG RETROSPECTIVE AT LA CINÉMATHÈQUE FRANÇAISE, PARIS from 10 to 30 March 2014 In partnership with La Cinémathèque française is pleased to welcome Tsai Ming-Liang as part of this retrospective covering all periods of his career to date. Contact Presse: Stéphanie Videau [email protected] 01 75 55 10 68 46 “In 2014, Normandy is hosting the World!” By Laurent BEAUVAIS, President, Basse-Normandie Regional Council The Region of Basse-Normandie is delighted to be an official partner of the Asian Film Festival, which, every year, is a fantastic opportunity for the region’s population to raise its awareness of a part of the world we still do not know well enough. This is an opportunity to broaden one’s cultural horizons, as the Festival makes it possible to see films that are rarely screened in France. Added to this is an educational approach aimed at schoolchildren, who can participate in cinema workshops and encounters with directors, combined with a determination to be accessible to young people, in offering attractive rates to 15-25 year-olds, via the regional Cart’@too system, as well as to students and jobseekers. It’s an opportunity to broaden economic horizons, too, as the festival, with the Region’s support, dedicates an entire day to conferences and round tables on the themes of development and innovation. In 2013, the focus on China made it possible to highlight exchanges initiated between Basse-Normandie and the province of Fujian. This year will be dedicated to South Korea, our guest of honour. The subject under discussion during this economic day will be the attractiveness of Basse-Normandie and its openness on the world in 2014. Indeed, this year will be exceptionally rich in events for our region. From 23rd August to 7th September, we will be hosting the FEI AlltechTM 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, the biggest sporting event ever organised in our region, and the biggest competition organised on French soil between now and Euro 2016 (UEFA European Championship for men’s national football teams). We are expecting 500,000 visitors, 1,000 horsemen and as many horses, 120 journalists and 500 million viewers. Prior to that, BasseNormandie will be paying a vibrant tribute to the veterans of the Allied Forces who landed on our shores on 6th June 1944 and who joined battle in Normandy for liberty in France and in Europe. Conjointly with this 70th Anniversary, the year 2014 will be a high point for Basse-Normandie within the context of the candidacy of the D-Day Landing Beaches for registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These beaches, a universal symbol of peace and reconciliation between former belligerents, transmit the remembrance of the sacrifice made by those men to future generations. The Deauville Asian Film Festival develops the same approach, for the purpose of promoting exchange between our artists, our entrepreneurs, our researchers, our cultural stakeholders and the international markets. Enjoy the festival, everyone, and may it contribute to the development of Basse-Normandie’s influence as well as to a deeper understanding of Asian culture! 47 GENERAL ORGANIZATION LE CENTRE INTERNATIONAL DE DEAUVILLE (C.I.D) Jacques BELIN, General Manager LE PUBLIC SYSTÈME CINÉMA 40, rue Anatole France - 92594 Levallois Perret France PRESIDENT OF THE FESTIVAL Lionel CHOUCHAN DIRECTOR OF THE FESTIVAL Bruno BARDE PUBLICITY Alexis DELAGE-TORIEL / Céline PETIT Agnès LEROY / Annelise LANDUREAU / Clément RÉBILLAT Assisted by Sandrine GUILHEM Tel: +33 (0)1 41 34 21 26 - Fax: +33 (0)1 41 34 20 77 E-mail : [email protected] www.lepublicsystemecinema.fr PUBLIC INFORMATION TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE - Tel: +33 (0)2 31 14 40 00 CID - Tel: +33 (0)2 31 14 14 14 OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE FESTIVAL www.deauvilleasia.com @DeauvilleAsia @lpscinema Festival du Film Asiatique deauville 48
