TIME OF THE YEAR
The time of the year has arrived again, when all
KYUEM students take refuge from studying and the
hectic college life, to have a much needed break with
our House families and enjoy a little vacation after
finishing the gruesome A-Levels examinations.
Organized by the batch 16.0 with Rayvind Kurup as
the director of this year’s Diamond House trip, The
House of Courage optioned Hotel Seri Bayu in Pulau
Pangkor, Perak as the site to relax and revitalise
ourselves. On the 13th of June 2014, Diamonders
had to leave their chalet as early as 9 o’clock in the
morning to catch our transportation. The journey from
Kolej Yayasan UEM (KYUEM) to Pulau Pangkor was
not a short one. However, everyone had a whale of a
time in the bus, as their time was filled with laughter,
chatter and even catching up on some sleep!
Upon reaching Pangkor, some of us were really
thrilled to find out that our hotel was strategically
situated next to the beach. After we checked in
into the hotel and unpacked our belongings, all
Diamonders had a quick trip around the island via the
local pink minivan. That night, Diamonders enjoyed a
Game Night prepared by the juniors where everyone
had a blast trying different games such as Mafia and
Charades. The games ended around midnight and
soon afterwards everyone immediately doze off to
recharge themselves for another fun-filled day.
14th of June was proven to be the most energydraining day of the year. It was definitely a good
idea that the hotel had provided both teachers and
students with a hearty breakfast buffet as everyone
probably needed the energy to enjoy the various
activities prepared for them. After the breakfast,
each one of us experienced a boat ride around the
island.
Everyone was amazed by the scenic view. It was
definitely one of the highlights of the housetrip. Even
though some of us almost melted under the hot
scorching sun, the beautiful view made it seem so
worth it. On top of that, we were also not disappointed
by the sight of the little islands surrounding the

beach. We had a pleasure of time snapping photos
of the scenery, and also trying out various beach
activities such as the banana boat, jet-ski and many
more.
13-15
After spending the whole morning touring around the
island, we all headed back to the hotel; some even
spend their afternoon at the beach – playing Frisbee,
volleyball and enjoying the beach waves. Even after
the hectic day, it was a surprise that everyone was
still energetic and filled with enthusiasm.
As diamonds filled the night sky, the climax of the
whole house trip started – our very own Diamond
Night! The table was set up, and the smell of
barbequed chicken, fish, crabs and other food
penetrating to our nose; making our stomach
grumble. The rest of the night was just pure fun:
performances, food, speeches, games and more
Diamond bonding. The event was indescribable,
only those who were present were able to perceive
the warm feeling of having a Diamond family with
truly amazing members, spending time together with
all the workload from college left behind for a while.
The trip has come to an end. The last day was filled
with more sunrise-watching, beach strolling, all-youcan-eat breakfast and a lot more poses and pictures
while wearing our Diamond polo t-shirt. Heading
back to college means heading back to reality.
However, the trip was definitely memorable and
well worth our time; it definitely taught us that the
importance of feeling belonged in a community and
what better way to learn that other than being in the
Diamond family?
Before I conclude, I would like to thank our
houseparents, Mrs Saunders and Encik Rizal,
who have been with us through the planning and
the execution of the House trip, starting from our
departure until our arrival back in KYUEM. We
Diamonders feel that the house trip would not be
a success without the endless support from our
houseparents and the committee itself, and to all
Diamonders who made the trip memorable.

Compulsory Getaway
The weekend of 13-15 June 2014 will forever be
etched in the minds of Garnetrons who went for the
annual house trip. The three-day two night vacation,
held at Impiana Beach Resort, Cherating, was a
compulsory getaway since we just finished the
exams. The objectives of the trip was primarily to
have fun. Both seniors and juniors were very excited
throughout the 4-hour journey to the hotel.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the liaison officers
and the hotel staffs before being immediately
whisked off to our own rooms for our free and easy
session. Everyone was considerably tired yet still full
of enthusiasm. The evening became so much easier
since we were already put into groups by the house
trip committee. Right after, we had fun ice breaking
games where everyone did their best to push their
respective groups up the rank. Right after dinner,
everyone settled down in their groups to discuss
their BBQ night performances.
play water polo right after lunch. We all had a good
time. In the afternoon, more sports came by. There
were volleyball and tug of war. It was truly idyllic to
see the groups cheering for one another. Then, there
was the bbq night where every group have prepared
for their own performances. We truly enjoyed all the
performances from each group and all Garnetrons
managed to prove that they are indeed a creative lot.
The next morning, we all headed back to the
college. It was indeed a wonderful and memorable
experience. The trip made us closer than ever before
and we indeed look forward for our next.
The next day, we saw even more exciting activities
including The Amazing Race Cherating, Fear Factor
and Cherating’s Next Top Model. Everyone had a
great laugh. But it was just noon so we all decided to

On the 13th of June, 83 Sapphire students and
four teachers departed from KYUEM at nine in
the morning for Pulau Pangkor. The bus ride from
Lembah Beringin to the Pangkor Jetty took around
three to four hours with only one stop at a rest area.
After arriving at the jetty around lunch time, we were
greeted by the beautiful Pangkor Islands.
The ride from the jetty to the island took around 20
minutes. Once we arrived, we checked into Coral
Bay Beach Resort. After checking in, we were all
assigned to our respective apartment units consisting
of 6 people per apartment. We did not have any
major group activities planned for our first day in
Pangkor so many of us chose to explore the town,
6
relax at the beach and go swimming. At around 8pm,
we gathered at the dining area to have a delicious
dinner buffet spread consisting of different local
dishes prepared by the hotel staff.
After dinner, the house trip committee decided to
explore Pangkor to look for places to hold events for
the seniors. We visited a beach called Teluk Nipah
and experienced the night life as well as visited the
night market. We ended the night with delicious
burgers from the stall beside our hotel.
The next day, students were free to do what they’d
like before the big group activity in the evening.
Some of us chose to go island hopping, snorkelling,

shopping and many more. In the evening, all
members of Sapphire who were on the trip gathered
at Teluk Nipah where we played games organised
by the committee members such as Splat Bang and
Candy Dodgeball. We then had a big bonfire where
we barbecued food and talked amongst each other.
As the day came to a close we all watched the
sunset together and took advantage of this gracious
opportunity by taking group pictures for memories.
Once we reached the hotel around 11pm we
proceeded with the Awards Ceremony for the
seniors where some lucky individuals won gifts. Our
last night in Pangkor ended on a good note with lots
of laughter as the seniors and juniors bonded for the
last time.
On the last day of our house trip we roamed the
beaches of Pangkor and had lunch for the last time at
the Coral Bay Beach Resort. We left for the Pangkor
Jetty at around 1pm and arrived back in college just
in time for dinner. All the members of the house trip
committee are grateful for the successful trip and us
students truly enjoyed our stay at Pangkor.

Sense of Unity
In order to instil a sense of unity amongst Topazians,
the House of Rock, Topaz organised a field trip to
Batu Feringghi, Penang from the 13th to the 15th
of June 2014. A total of 73 students, together with
House Parents and teachers, Dr Saunders and Ms
Sharon, Mr Boler and family along with Pn Zahara
and her husband, were present for this fun-filled
trip. Topaz seniors and juniors alike, who had had
a stressful month prior to the trip, were delightfully
anticipating the three-day stay at Penang.
On the 13th of June, we departed from the college at
10 a.m. after boarding two chartered air conditioned
buses, with juniors on one bus and seniors on
another. We had a long and bumpy journey ahead
of us, and so some decided to watch a movie on
the bus while others took naps. At half past noon,
the buses stopped at a rest station and we had our
lunch there.
8
At 3.30 p.m., we reached Holiday Inn Resort, a
4-star hotel on the golden coast of Batu Feringghi.
Room keys were distributed and we were sent off
to our pre-assigned rooms to unpack and relax. We
left the itinerary for the trip empty as the schedule
was meant to be free-and-easy, and so Topazians
were free to decide what they wanted to do with their
time at Penang. A group of seniors headed straight
for the private swimming pool, immediately filling
up a whole section of the pool with their laughs and
cheers as they enjoyed rounds of water polo. Those
who could not resist the picturesque sunset went
down to the beach.
At 8 p.m., we gathered at the hotel garden situated
by the sea where our buffet dinner was prepared
for by the hotel. The night started with an opening
speech by Dr Saunders and Ms Sharon, followed by
a few words of gratitude from Adam, the House Trip
Director. Bhagat Singh- known by most as Bhagzmade an excellent emcee for the night, livening up
the atmosphere and bringing laughs to the crowd. As
we ate, we had a karaoke session where Topazians
were called on stage at random and were asked
to sing. At 10 p.m., the wonderful night ended with
Adam’s birthday celebration and a group photo
session.
Unfortunately, there was a last minute change in the
itinerary as the hotel staff had misunderstood the
booking and arranged for our buffet dinner to be held
on the first night instead of the second. Thankfully,
all students and teachers were informed as soon as
the house trip committee discovered the change in
the arrangement.
Our second day kicked off with an enticing buffet
breakfast provided by the hotel. After a hearty meal,
everyone went off to explore Penang in different
ways. Some chose to take public transportation to
Gurney Plaza for some shopping, some explored the
heart of the city while others stayed by the beach to
partake in water sports such as parasailing and jet
skiing.

house trip 2014
By Tan See Yee
When night fell, we gathered on the beach and lit a
bonfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing laughter
around the fire. Some left the bonfire early to wander
around the night market not 5 minutes away from the
hotel entrance.
On the third and last day, we wandered around
within the vicinity of the hotel as we had to check
out at noon. Some enjoyed a last walk along the
beach and many pictures were taken to preserve
the fond memories we made during the trip, despite
the sweltering heat. After lunch, we bid a reluctant
farewell to Batu Feringghi and headed back to
college.
The house trip was indeed a success thanks to the
unwavering support from the House Parents and
cooperation from all Topazians. Here’s to all the fond
memories we’ve made, and to the ones yet to come.

JULY

MUSCOM OVERSEAS CAMP
Foreign lands pose foreign challenges; this is
especially true for travellers who are new and alien
to a society and its idiosyncrasies. In the case of
Malaysian Muslim students preparing to study abroad
in non-Muslim lands, especially in Western countries
with known liberalist and secular worldviews, these
issues plead to be addressed with greater urgency
and responsibility.
The importance of having a holistic preparation –
be it physically, mentally, and spiritually - prior to
departure, could not be accentuated even more.
Hence, the Muslim Overseas Camp with this year’s
theme “Surviving the Freedom” has been held as a
pragmatic platform to address said issues.
The programme took place at ILSAS, TNB Bandar
Baru Bangi for 4 days and 3 nights. Various
activities meticulously planned and arranged with
the help from KYUEM ex-students were carried out.
Educational talks were given by renowned local
Muslim scholars on many relevant topics such as
Fiqh of Travellers and Compass Setting, which both
were delivered by Ustaz Hasrizal Abd Jamil. Ustaz
Ridhauddin Salleh addressed the participants on
14
the fundamental of being more adaptable, more
dynamic and more equipped to face challenges
while maintaining the principles of Islam in his
lectures entitled Ambassadorial Muslim and Islamic
Thinking Methodology. A fun-filled speech delivered
by Brother Shah Kirit is focused on Friendly
Comparative Religion.
Through games and group discussions, the
participants were exposed to the basic principles
of technical religious practices and conducts.
The modules used to facilitate and enhance the
participants’ understanding were provided by the
helpful super seniors mainly from batch 13.0 and
14.0.
The closing ceremony was officiated by KYUEM
Chief Executive Officer, Pn Nor Rubaiha Mohamed
Nor on the last day of the programme. The organising
committee would like to express our heartfelt
gratitude and appreciation to each and every one
who has contributed in making this programme a
success.
MUSCOM BOOK SALE
The 12th August 2014 was the date that most of
the students had been waiting for since the start
of the new semester. It’s the day where the largest
KYUEM’s book sale took place, The MUSCOM Book
Sale. This annual event was anticipated not only by
the juniors who had just enrolled but also to most
seniors who just couldn’t wait to start their semester
with a wide variety of new books to be read. The
bookworms would certainly enjoy the books ranging
from textbooks, references and even exercise
books. Above all, the main attraction was that most
of the books sold were given up to more than 50 %
discounts from their original price.
Before the event, the MUSCOM members led
by the economic bureau (SYUKON) managed to
gather thousands of books and past papers from
the seniors and also unsold books from the previous
sale. The seniors usually put up reasonable prices
for their books to be sold. This tradition is carried out
annually to provide students with a sufficient supply
of books at affordable prices. At the same time, we
help the seniors to gain income by selling the books
rather than throwing them away.
AUG
12
The event took place right the evening class inside
the dining hall. However, there were already students
lining up outside the dining hall, even an hour before
we opened the entrance. Right after the entrance
was been opened, the students came running in,
trying to get their hands on as many book as they
could. The dining hall really turned out to be like the
Year End Sale inside a shopping mall. Most of the
books were sold within the first hour.
Positive responses and support from the community
of this college especially the students really made
this event a success. This is certainly an annual
event, which is worth holding for students who are
striving towards excellence.

On the 19 August 2014, the collaboration of Student
Council and Musolla Community organized the
annual KYUEM Hari Raya Celebartion event, one
of the many festive occasions in Malaysia. After
a month of fasting from dawn to dusk, Hari Raya
Aidilfitri is a special day for the Muslim world in
signifying their victory during Ramadhan.
At 8.00 pm, students, in-house contractors, college
staffs, teachers and Lembah Beringin residents
started filling in the Great Hall, decked in their
traditional Malay finery, ensuring the festival mood
was in the air. The event commenced with speeches
from the director of the event, Wan Muhammad
Hussani, followed by our handsome headmaster,
Dr. Paul Rogers and then, Puan Rubaiha, CEO of
Yayasan UEM.
It is a known fact especially to KYUEM students
that Malaysians’ celebrations are all about food
and performances. Therefore, various marvelous
delicacies served during the event had become
the main highlight of the night. Indeed, there were
16
lots of mouth-watering and scrumptious dishes to
make the one and only Hari Raya night memorable.
In fact, the long-awaited dishes of the night, the
fresh and juicy roasted lamp served with spicy
black pepper sauce had hypnotized the guest mind.
While savoring the unlimited food, the guests also
enjoyed performances, particularly nasheed songs
from the newly intake juniors and of course, Raya
videos made by each house for the Hari Raya Video
Competition.
At the end of the night, everyone seemed to be
engaged in his or her photo shooting session. Surely,
the traditional Malay house booth had become the
most desirable side for the guests. It is a wonderful
experience that it needs to be solidified with
something tangible and photography is something to
remember the event by.
To wrap everything up, everyone seemed to have a
wonderful time that night. We would like to thank the
college staffs, students and fellow guests for making
the event merrier and of course, the organizer of the
event for their effort in making this year Hari Raya
Celebration a reality...

Health Awareness
Week 2014
AUG
25-29
The 2014 KYUEM Health Awareness Week (HAW)
was held from 25th to 29th August. It was a 5 day
week filled with activities, namely a movie screening,
the Mini Olympics, a health talk and a blood donation
drive.
On the Monday of HAW, the Student Council held
a subsidised, free-of-charge movie screening. It
was conducted at the college’s LT2, at 8.30pm.
The movie in question was the largely popular,
highly anticipated and well-rated blockbuster, “The
Karate Kid”. The lecture theatre was filled with
excited, sporting students who were eager to be
a part of the health movement. The movie served
its noble purpose well, to educate the students on
the paramount importance of maintaining optimum
mental and physical health. The movie, which lasted
for roughly 2 hours, elicited a standing ovation and
suggestions for such future activities to be carried
out more often.
20
by Jessica Lee, Eugene Chong, Lim Li Ying & Aiman Hashim
In conjunction with the largely successful movie
screening, the Student Council operated a booth
selling healthy muesli bars. The bars, which were
both affordable and tasty, were effective in raising
awareness of healthy eating and educating the
students on how to control their food intake properly.
The sales did not make much profit as our aim was
to serve the students, not profit mindlessly from
capitalistic endeavours; nevertheless, our small
entrepreneurship required much ingenuity and
marketing talent to ensure its runaway success.
The Mini Olympics was held, and has always been
held annually as the main event of the college’s
HAW, on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was an
inter-house competition consisting of 100m, 200m,
400m, 4x100m, shot put and high jump events.
The two days comprised the track and field events.
Throughout the event, we could clearly feel the
energy from the environment, fuelled by the cheers
of house members, supporting their athletes as well
as the uproars when an athlete emerged triumphant.
It was an event not to be missed, even for the
teachers! At the end of the day, all houses gave their
all but eventually The House of Rock, Topaz, bagged
the first position, followed by Diamond, Garnet and
Sapphire.
The Mini Olympics carried out a huge message to
the family of KYUEM on how important physical
activities are to their health and we hope that this
event remains a tradition in future HAWs.
On Thursday night, a health talk was held in the
Great Hall. We had invited Mr. Surain A. Victor,
a speaker of 7 years of experience, to give a talk
entitled ‘Live2Love’. The talk was on sex education;
specifically sexual and reproductive health, as well as
HIV/AIDS awareness. The public reception towards
the topic was as expected: very confused and very
uncertain in attending this talk. Albeit so, many
students, teachers and staff members attended the
talk with an open mind, appearing eager to know
more about sexually transmitted diseases. The talk
comprised clarification on common misconceptions
of HIV/ AIDS, preventive methods (golden rules of
ensuring safe sex) and surprisingly, rock climbing!
Mr. Surain is a passionate rock climber and is on
a mission to expand the rock climbing community
in Malaysia. He had shed the light on how we can
achieve the almost-impossible, as he is an advocate
of the phrase ‘mind over matter’, by linking it to the
physical and also mental challenges faced by rock
climbers.
The blood donation drive was held on the last day
of HAW from 10am to 4pm at the health clinic. For
this event, apart from the HAW committee, we had
enthusiastic members from the Pre-Medical Society
to assist the hospital personnel from the Slim River
Hospital to ensure the smooth flow of the event
throughout the day. Aiding in the registration of
donors, the volunteers had the privilege to learn the
technique of measuring blood pressure using both
the electronic and manual sphygmomanometers
under the guidance of the matrons. It was also a
great opportunity for them to observe the procedure
involved in blood donation as well as the criteria
required of the donors who wish to donate blood. A
total of 64 successful donors, comprising students,
teachers and staff, supported our blood donation
drive. As a token of appreciation, the donors
were given a certificate and refreshments for their
applaudable act.
Other than that, the annual Cleanest Chalet
competition was held. All student accommodations
were inspected; cleanliness and tidiness of the
common area, exterior premise as well as the
toilets being the main criteria. There were many
accommodations that were spick and span,
whereas for some, we questioned the frequency
of their usage of detergent. All in all, most of them
were satisfactory. The winning houses for boys’
and girls’ accommodation were Garnet and Topaz
respectively.

This year the Physics department of KYUEM has the
honour again from the University of Bath to jointly
organise the Robotic Challenge at KYUEM. Like in
2012, this year about 30 students who will pursue
engineering degrees at university participated in the

The purpose of this challenge is to give the students
an experience of the engineering field in general
and how robots function specifically. The day started
off with the introduction to robotic system – what is
a robot and how they function. The representative
from the University of Bath also introduced the
robotic fields that they have in the university.
After that, the students in a group of 3 worked on to
programme the robot to follow certain instructions.
Each group designed, built, programmed, tested and
modified different robots to complete assigned tasks
and compete in challenges.
The challenge is for the robot to follow a dark pathway
on a white surface. The robot must be programmed
to follow it in the fastest time possible. The group
that can cover the path the fastest will be declared
the winner. Each group was given 4 trial runs before
a final race.
Of the ten groups, 6 managed to complete the
programme and move the robot to follow the line.
It was a challenging task for the students as the
majority of them were experiencing these kind of
challenges for the first time. However they enjoyed
the experience and would like to pursue the field of
robotic engineering further.
The 2014 Cultural Performance Night was an overall success. All the juniors were pleased with its result which
was further reinforced by the positive reviews received by both seniors and teachers. We are extremely grateful to
the Student Services Department for supporting us throughout our journey and for guiding us as new students in
ensuring the night is a success. We are very delighted with the outcome of the event as the Cultural Performance
Night was an incredible avenue for both seniors and juniors of KYUEM to bond with one another.

At the end of the race, one group was declared a
winner with a time 14.6 seconds to complete the
path smoothly.

Glow
By Wong Jeyinn
Held on the 22nd of September 2014, the Chinese
Cultural Club once again presented one of its
most remarkable events, the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The festival aimed to foster unity and close bonds
among the tight-knit community of KYUEM, as well
as to expose the members of KYUEM to this unique
Chinese culture.
Themed ‘Glint and Glow’, the Saad Square and
Japanese garden were decked out in colourful
lanterns and ribbons which had indeed brought
the place into a glowing dimension. Soothing
soundtracks and subdued lighting made the people
fall into the festive mood, while thinking of their loved
ones as they contemplated the moon.
At 8.30 p.m., the festival was kicked start with a lively
speech by the headmaster, Dr Paul Rogers, followed
by a motivating speech by the teacher advisor, Miss
Marina Bull and the director of the festival, Wong
Jecinn. Then, a video was shown which continued
the legend of ‘Hou Yi’, the man who played a vital
role in the Mid-Autumn Festival. The moment which
the students had been eager for eventually arrived.
The students purchased a variety of traditional
Chinese food from the respective booths, such as
seven different flavours of mooncakes, pineapple
tarts, herbal eggs, Tao Sa Piah, Dragonball biscuits,
Heong Piah, coconut tarts, kuih bahulu with
vouchers. Chrysanthemum tea was also prepared to
quench their thirst. Besides enjoyed the lip-smacking
food, the students also indulged themselves with
games. Burst of laughter could be heard from the
game booths as the students acted hilariously to
accomplish the game tasks.
The main highlight of the festival-the ‘Sky-lantern’
session awed the members of KYUEM and was truly
an eye-opener for those who had not experienced
it. Dr Paul Rogers and his wife, Mrs Helen Rogers
and Miss Marina had the opportunity to release the
sky lanterns with the guidance from the committee
members. As the sky lanterns arose to the night sky,
the students carried their lanterns around the Saad
Square to share the enjoyment.
The festival marked its end approximately at 10 p.m.
This was a memorable and meaningful event to the
members of KYUEM. The committee hoped to bring
more joy and amusement to the KYUEM members in
the next Mid-Autumn Festival.
