Voss Foundation aims to help fulfill communities’ water requirements and then focus on the selfimprovement of lives and communities once basic water needs are satisfied. We have a particular interest in assisting women and girls who, relieved of the burden of fetching water, have time to devote to education and enterprise. We help meet these demands through an approach that ensures local ownership and long-term sustainability through partnerships with trusted organizations on the ground, use of appropriate technology, and through systems that assess the multiple water requirements of a community. Voss Foundation projects primarily involve a combination of well-digging and -creation or -rehabilitation, pumping, and piping. Secondary water-related aspects are based on local requests and range from bringing clean water to schools and infirmaries, to agriculture and irrigation, to micro-finance and education based on new resources, time, or money made available by the presence and proximity of clean water. We incorporate both environmental consideration and the lasting success of the projects into villages’ requirements to create a comprehensive project that meets diverse water needs." " Founded by VOSS of Norway ASA as an independent 501(c)(3) public charity in 2008, Voss Foundation has offices in New York and Oslo. Since our inception in 2008, Voss Foundation has helped to build 38 water access points and 10 sanitation facilities in 5 countries, changing the lives of over 100,000 people in Kenya, Mali, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia. These are all successful projects on which Voss Foundation has worked with Milgis Trust. 2 THE PARTNERSHIP Milgis Trust As a result of growing insecurity leading to the poaching of wildlife and over-extraction of declining natural resources, the Milgis Trust was established in 2004. Its mission is to sustain the wildlife, habitat and pastoral peoples’ way of life in northern Kenya. The Milgis Trust’s core area is located in northern Kenya within the drainage of the Matthews Range, Ndoto Mountains and Kirisia Hills, spreading further north towards Oldonyo Mara, Mount Nyiru and Mount Kulal. The Trust’s aim is to cover approximately 8,000 sq kms and support a diverse range of flora and fauna and the pastoral livelihoods of several different nomadic tribes including the Samburu, Turkana and Rendille. Their continued presence on the ground sustains this trusting relationship and encourages and promotes the successful implementation of projects as well as the Milgis Trust’s ongoing field operations. Voss Foundation has been so impressed with the quality of Milgis Trust’s work that we continue to collaborate, constructing a total of 12 water access points in the region so far. Thanks to the success of our 2011 Just Around the Corner Art Auction with Sotheby’s in Norway, Voss Foundation has committed to fund clean water projects with Milgis Trust through 2014. Through these successfully completed and on-going projects in Samburuland, we have developed a close working relationship. Together, we have brought 3 water access points each to the communities of Latakwen (inaugurated 2009), Swari (2010), Ndonyo Nasipa (2011), and Urra (2012). Approximately 7,000 Samburu lives have been changed with clean water access provided by our partnership. 3 Photograph courtesy of Voss Foundation FUNDING SOURCE Photograph courtesy of the Bergum family Lene Maria for Rent Vann Lene Maria for Clean Water Lene Maria Bergum was, at 19 years old, a tragic victim of the shooting at Utøya in July 2011. To honor her memory, her family has chosen to build a water project in SubSaharan Africa with Voss Foundation. Her parents, Tove and Arnulf, feel that this is exactly the way Lene Maria would want to be remembered. As they told us, “Her friends have described her as the world’s nicest person and that she cared about everyone and everything.” The Bergum family’s goal was to raise the funds necessary to implement a water system, hopefully in Samburuland in northern Kenya, where the need is great and Voss Foundation has been working successfully for several years. In this area, as in many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, it is primarily women and children who bear the burden of fetching water. Being able to access clean water from taps in their village, rather than having to walk many kilometers every day to fetch water, is positively life-changing. The Lene Maria for Clean Water campaign reached its goal of raising 360,000 NOK ($60,000) in summer 2012 engaging unprecedented local support through charity dinners, auctions, and other community efforts. The Bergum family has also decided to continue raising funds to build a second clean water project in Liberia. “We are seeing a very large commitment, and we cannot give up now. Therefore, we have chosen to continue working. Now we raise money for a well project in Liberia,” says Tove Bergum. Voss Foundation would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has donated. About 79% of the population lives in rural areas and relies on agriculture as their main source of income. Kenya is among the world’s 30 poorest countries. It also has one of the world’s fastest population growth rates.1 The population has more than tripled in the last 30 years, putting a great strain on the country’s resources.2 Access to safe water and sanitation is limited, and over 15 million people – including more than half the rural population – are without access to safe water or sanitation facilities.3 Kenya's water shortage also means that a large population of women and children spend up to one third of their day fetching water from the nearest fresh water source.4 The lack of a consistent supply of water, coupled with poor sanitation, are two of the major factors that inhibit health, development, food security, and women’s empowerment in Kenya, propagating the cycle of poverty. 1 http://www.unicef.org/kenya/overview_4616.html 2 Ibid. 3 http://thewaterproject.org/water-in-crisis-kenya.asp 4 Ibid. 5 THE NEED In Masiketa, which is about 30 kms North of Elkanto, the people have been asking us for help for a long time...This is an amazing place because they live with the permanent stress of attacks from the Turkana, and yet people choose to live there…because the grazing is good for their animals, [which are] their livelihood. There are times when many, many people come from far and wide ( as far as 200 kms away) to find grazing for their livestock. They are very resilient and always look forward to a new day! What we propose here is that they already have a very good borehole, but with a very poor water system. In fact [it is] virtually obsolete [due to poor maintenance—sadly, a very common problem in Africa, where only 7% of aid goes to maintaining existing services]. They have a very old Diesel pump, that [only] sometimes brings water up the pipeline, so it’s an incredibly erratic problem and has been for a long time. We believe a proper Voss Foundation project to sustain the livelihood of this very dynamic community would be fantastic. Photographs courtesy of Milgis Trust Photograph courtesy of Milgis Trust Through this project, Voss Foundation aims to sustainably enhance access to clean water for the benefit of the Masiketa community in Kenya. Masiketa is known for its good grazing for livestock, and at times can draw people from as far as 200 kilometers away. The project also builds capacity through the establishment and training of a water committee, so that project inputs will be maintained and outcomes sustained past the life of the project. 7 THE BUDGET Quantity 1 1 1 1 1 24 75m 75m 75m 30m 50m 100m 2 1 1 24 Panels 1 150 pcs 1 1000m 20 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 SUBTOTAL TOTAL Item PS4000 HR 14H Pump Lorentz Water Level Probe Cable Splice Kit Float Switch PV Disconnect with junction box Solar Panel CS6C-M140 6mm 3 core submersible cable 1 mm 2 core water level cable Stainess steel safety rope 10 mm DC Auto Cable 6 mm Ground cable 4mm Auto Cable Ground rod & clamp Delta Solar Light arrestor LA 302 400 mm 16 bar HDPE Pipe with Electro transition Fabricated Frame for modules Fasteners, wire grips, cable ties, etc. Flex Conduit 8000 Lt Water tank (plus one left over from last project) 40 mm HDPE Pipe 16PN 40 mm HDPE couplers & bents Water stand with four outlets & animal drinking trough GCI Pipe & fittings Contract Technician Transport of materials, site transport & visits Labor Water "watchman" for a 5 year period Cost of recconnaisance (flight, food, etc for 4 people) Contingency of 10% Administrative Contingency USD ($) 5450 75 41 46 715 7180 1173 98 340 177 133 149 28 102 625 1915 200 125 1335 3350 288 1176 1283 845 6500 2200 6000 3192 44741 4505 6000 55246 8 Voss Foundation Bygdøy Allé 17 N-0262 Oslo Norway tel +47 23 13 16 16 [email protected] 236 W 30th St. 12th Floor New York, NY 10001 USA tel +1 212 995 2255 [email protected] www.thevossfoundation.org
