Equipped with creativity, a sense of humor, and a cargo van, Brooke Voss, Allied Member ASID, and pal Brian Williams of Designers Concierge embarked on a mission to create a vignette solely with bargain designer merchandise. The result is a fresh, modern arrangement that would be perfectly at home in any living room, great room, or office. mspmag.com | MPLS.ST.PAUL HOME | may 2011 23 Dock 86 buyers find products all over the country and overseas. 2. Martha O’Hara Interiors Showroom At the conclusion of the Luxury Home 1. Tour, the Parade of Homes, and other high-end builder events, the design team at Martha O’Hara Interiors restyles beautiful custom furniture and accessories into vignettes at the company’s warehouse-style showroom and prices everything to move at 40 percent to 60 percent off retail. “These are dynamite designer quality goods at discount prices,” says Voss. After browsing through the treasures in the showroom, Voss selected a pair of beautiful turquoise pillows backed with exquisite metallic-accented fabric and a wooden ibex. “You just don’t find things like this in most retail settings,” she says. Dock 86 Located just off 694 in Little Canada, Dock 86 is the largest discount furniture store in the metro area. Dock 86 buyers travel across the country and overseas to find showroom closings, factory closeouts, and overstocks, and the result is a kaleidoscopic, constantly changing mix of furniture, rugs, prints, accessories, home office furniture, and even mattresses. “The space is huge, but it’s exciting and staged really well, with everything put together in vignettes,” says Voss. “There’s a lot to see, so it makes sense to invest a little time. And, don’t miss the new Trend 86 department and the clearance section.” When Voss spotted a pair of brightly colored paisley chairs in coral and aqua, she knew she’d found the color palette for the vignette. When Voss discovered the pillow room, she felt like a kid in a candy store. He just had to be in the mix.” the Vignette With Brian Williams’s able assistance (and floral expertise), here’s how interior designer Brooke Voss pulled it all together. Photographed by Steve Henke at International Market Square “I love the fish on the front of this vase.” “I love the fact that the turquoises in this vignette don’t perfectly match. I prefer things to be not overly designed.” “I like the whimsy, and I always love an odd number.” “I love the play on scale. The color is a perfect match for the deep, grayeddown fuchsia in the chairs.” “Whether you live in a loft, a condo, or a house, you could walk into this room and be happy. It’s tailored without being stuffy, and the furniture is comfortable and welcoming.” 34 may 2011 | MPLS.ST.PAUL HOME | mspmag.com “I love the idea of pattern on pattern. For me, the only rule about design is that there are no rules.” Taking inspiration from Voss’s color palette, Williams combined fragrant white Polar Star roses with coral Kangaroo paws for a sleek, sophisticated arrangement. “I love the color and the brass accents on this trunk. It’s easy to live with—you can put magazines on top of it, store blankets inside it, and kick your feet up on it.” “These tables are simple, architectural, tailored, and lovely.” “I chose this sofa for its simple lines and neutral color. It’s a great blank canvas to layer things upon.” “The rug’s soft, subtle geometric pattern plays well with the paisley chairs.” mspmag.com | MPLS.ST.PAUL HOME | may 2011 35
