April `16 Interference Newsletter - San Gabriel Valley Radio Control
Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 interference San Gabriel Valley Radio Control League Celebrating 54 Years of Aircraft Modeling Presidents Message Ken Repairing Trainer BY GILBERT LUCERO Float Fly Monday’s Our Float Fly Monday’s have become a very special gathering, that our Club Member’s and Guest’s look forward every second Monday of the month. Flying off the water can be a little challenging when flying a certain aircraft. There is nothing more satisfying than challenging yourself to making a smooth scale take-off and landing, because it does not happen all the time. Sometimes or should I say a lot of times, we have to row the recovery boat to Table Of Contents 1 - Presidents Message -Gilbert Lucero 3 - Ken’s Pen -Ken Meade 43 - Pylon Race Photos -Robert King 5 - Float Fly -Paul Moren 7 - In The Shop -Robert King 12 - Check Your Six/ Model of the Month 15 - Pylon Workers Needed retrieve our airplanes. The object of the game is not to get on that boat. Unfortunately, I have continued on page 2 Page 1 of 17 www.sgvrcl.org Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 continued from page 1 been on that boat way too many times. Flying off the water is more challenging, but it is what makes it so much fun! At The Field Besides having fun flying, our Float Fly Barbecue’s have become a great place to “Flying off the water gather and socialize with one is more challenging another. We have become but it is what makes accustomed to our monthly potlucks, that it is becoming it so much fun!” a tradition. Honestly, I think -GILBERT a lot of us look forward to the food more than we do the flying. Everyone volunteers to either bring the hot dogs, hamburgers or the carne asada. Of course we all look forward to Bob’s great potato salad and Jay’s delicious brownies, but more than just the great food to look forward to, is the great company. It has become a great way to unite, talk to one another and show our support. I would like to thank everyone who helped organize this monthly event and have kept it going. I would like to especially thank my very special friend Paul Moren, for getting this whole Float Fly Monday started. This little piece of Legg lake has become a very special solace to many of us. GILBERT LUCERO Page 2 of 17 www.sgvrcl.org Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 Ken’s Pen BY KEN MEADE Something Different You all know about the Tethered Car Track down by the restroom. In the late 30's when small gasoline motors became available most went into airplanes. Tethered Cars were a development from airplane nuts getting tired of crashing. Keeping a hobby on the ground was a big improvement! It became very popular. Radio control was a dream for the modelers them. A "Ham License" was required to even think of using a transmitter then. Today I'm told there are three tracks in the USA like the one in our park. Ours holds the speed record of over 200. I've stopped by there many times when they are running. Just recently I saw one post 198 MPH. The tech knowledge required on those things rivals our best and far exceeds 90% of what we do! The piece of concrete they run on has to be as smooth and level. Period! I just ran across a little bit of their history. As a kid flying U control models the name "Dooling" always came up for the hottest engines of that time period. Also the most expensive. So needless to say, I never even held one in my hands. :-) Anyway, when you see them running at their once a month meet, take a look. They run antiques as well as new stuff. They hold big events once in awhile. That's when I saw the 198 last month. No you won't see the car at 198. It's just a faint blur. I think the motors are hitting the 30,000 rev mark. I don't really know, just guessing from the sounds. In this site there's also pictures of one of the other tracks. It's nice! http://hazelhomeartandantiques.blogspot.com/2015/04/cool-and-expensive-vintageopen-wheel.html KEN MEADE 73 (Best Regards) WA6IVD Page 3 of 17 www.sgvrcl.org Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 March Pylon Race Page 4 of 17 www.sgvrcl.org Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 Float Fly BY PAUL MOREN March 14th 7:30 a.m. I opened the gates, the weather is cold and we have 16 pilots after all, so at 8:30 a.m. I put my right hand in the Weigon prop with it running, 15 stitches kinda like saw cut in the palm of your hand, I take blood thinners so blood went everywhere, Gilbert took me to El Monte Emergency, they said no waiting so went right in, got sewed up and back to the lake to finish with lunch. Thanks Glen and Stella for cooking and Ed Howell for bringing really good hot dogs, we had a small group for lunch. Then we had a GREAT surprise, Ken Dillon showed up with an electric Extra 300 on floats, it's first time out, it flew great, it's so good to see you Ken after 20 years, your a better flier than ever. I hope this gets to Robert King in time for the next Newsletter AND thanks Gilbert for taking me to the hospital. Next float fly is Monday, May 9th, 2016 hope to see you all there. Just never seemed to happen. Well one of the racers/club member Pietro offered to sell me a couple of his 424 planes and a few engines if I was interested since he was getting out of that class. Said sure. I was thinking I would give it a try practicing and if I liked it would enter a race. Worried about having to actually go the opposite way (like Nascar?) Gilbert offered to help me learn. Went through the one that looked ready to fly and changed the fuel tank from 6 to 4oz. Added a LIFE battery, beefed up a couple areas, minor repairs and called it good. Gilbert got it trimmed out for me and I commenced to flying. I’ve said this before but when your judging we call the 424 the slow class sometimes. Trust me when your out there flying it it doesn’t seem that “slow”. I finally got used to flying it I started practicing about twice a week. Even if it was just one flight. The first race was about 2 months away. Gilbert volunteered to be my caller (sucker!). The hardest part for me was trying to listen and fly at the same time. Turn now? What was that? Don’t fly over the pits? Well after doing it over and over again I was starting to get the hang of it! I got more confident and flying steady. So I decided to go ahead and enter the race! I had my second Viper 500 that was never flown so went ahead and got that ready. continued on page 8 Page 7 of 17 www.sgvrcl.org Volume 54 - Issue 4 April 2016 continued from page 7 Got all my stuff packed up and headed out to the race. It sure is a different perspective working at a race and actually being a racer! I practiced early to get mine trimmed out with another guy who was practicing at the same time. All of a sudden it hit me that I will have to race against other planes! Hmmm. Now I got a little nervous. I decided to race my older plane since I knew it the best and this was my first race. I checked it over a 100 times or so and probably paced a path in the grass. Then I heard my name called. Go time! Being a first time racer I only had to do 9 laps until my time is under 1:40 then the following race would be the full 10 laps. So basically everybody had to lap me to win. Wasn’t too sure about that but I understand why they do it for first timers. Well got out on the line with the other two racers. Surprisingly I wasn’t too nervous. Once the flag dropped there was no time to be nervous! I technically came in last but nobody lapped me so I won my first race! 9 lapper though! Well I was under the 1:40 time so the next day race I would be racing the full 10 laps. I had a fly off for second place the first day. Older gentleman named Ron. Nice guy. Was giving me tips in the pits. I watched him race and saw how he snuck up from behind and won a heat. Thinking that when came time to race him I was thinking this. I was ahead most of the laps and all of a sudden Gilbert says he’s catching up…my heart starts pounding because I wanted to win! I got a little too confident and yep you guessed it he snuck up on me and beat me. What fun though and we had a good laugh about it. Ended up with 3rd place the first day and 2nd place the second day. Honestly I would have been happy just finishing. Never thought I would place my first race. Guess what? I’m hooked! Already working on recovering another plane! I can’t thank Gilbert enough for helping me. I would have never even got up in the air without him. He’s always helping others at the field and for him to find the time to help myself have fun with this hobby I am truly privileged. Thanks Gilbert! Until next time…. What’s goin on in your shop?
