September 6, 2015 Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
FEAR NOT
In these times, there is plenty to be afraid of, if we only look around. It seems that every day the news media have
yet more bad news to tell: wars, disease, terrorism, drought, social unrest, and more. Some people have stopped using
clock radios to wake up in the morning, preferring a jarring buzzer to the even more jarring morning news. What more
do we need before we realize that we are finite creatures, and while there is much we can do to make our world better,
ultimately there is a lot that is simply not within our grasp? To this our loving God says, “Be strong, fear not!”
We must do what we can to make our world a better and safer place, but we must also realize our limits and that our
ultimate safety is in the hands of God. We can be comforted by the realization that God loves us beyond measure, and
will give us every help in our efforts to make our world a loving and safe place for everyone.

NO TEMAN
No
teman.”

September 8th, The Feast of the Nativity of Mary…
On Our Lady's birthday the Church celebrates the first
dawning of redemption with the appearance in the world
of the Savior's mother, Mary. The Blessed Virgin occupies a unique place in the history of salvation, and she has
the highest mission ever commended to any creature. We
rejoice that the Mother of God is our Mother, too. Let us
often call upon the Blessed Virgin as "Cause of our joy",
one of the most beautiful titles in her litany.
Since September 8 marks the end of summer and beginning of fall, this day has many thanksgiving celebrations
and customs attached to it. In the Old Roman Ritual there
is a blessing of the summer harvest and fall planting seeds
for this day.
The winegrowers in France called this feast "Our Lady of
the Grape Harvest". The best grapes are brought to the
local church to be blessed and then some bunches are attached to hands of the statue of Mary. A festive meal
which includes the new grapes is part of this day.
In the Alps section of Austria this day is "Drive-Down
Day" during which the cattle and sheep are led from their
summer pastures in the slopes and brought to their winter
quarters in the valleys. This was usually a large caravan,
with all the finery, decorations, and festivity. In some
parts of Austria, milk from this day and all the leftoverfood are given to the poor in honor of Our Lady’s
Nativity. (Excerpted from The Holyday Book by
Fr. Francis Weiser, SJ)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Orthodox Christians have a saying about the reality of
sin. They speak of “this holy and sinful Church, which we
love.” We know all too well the effects of sin on the faith
community. From our earliest days, we have seen baptism
as a place where the old self dies in Christ, dies to sin, and
rises to new life. Our ancestors in faith held that
post baptismal major sin was unthinkable. Yet, as one
Baptist minister once explained, “We know that sin is
drowned in the water, but it would appear that the devil is
a pretty good swimmer.”
The origins of the sacrament of penance have to do
with a similar insight among bishops in the early church.
A critical question for them was whether or not a baptized
person who had committed a public sin could be re established in church life, forgiven, and restored. Forgiven,
yes, was an early answer, but restored was another matter.
Penance would be a permanent lifestyle for the forgiven;
they would live at the margins of the community, clearly
visible in distinctive garments, and their access to the table of the Eucharist was restricted. The harsh beginnings
of public penance led in time to a true treasure of our tradition: the ability to find our way home through the ministry of others, and a way for all of us sinners to experience the gentle embrace of our forgiving Lord.

Book of Revelation. We will be utilizing a course presented on DVD entitled "Unveiling the Apocalypse: The
End Times According to the Bible" to guide our study.
The DVD lectures are presented by Norbertine Father
Alfred McBride, O. Praem, a noted scripture scholar who
will give the authentic Catholic interpretation of the Book
of Revelation. Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 23, at 7:30 pm in the Centennial Room, and will
continue on Wednesday evenings through November 18.
Costs for the classes are $17. To register or for more information, please email Deacon Bill at

September 13, 2015 Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
SERVANT
Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we
must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails.
The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave.
His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, “The Lord G opens my ear
that I may hear” (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, “The Lord G is my help” (50:7, 9),
so that the servant can endure the coming struggle.
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The Lord G is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a).
Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116).
Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18).
Gospel — Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35).

(Marcos 8:27-35).
The Serra Clubs of District 10 of Serra International

evangelistas Mateo y Marcos, Jesús llama Satanás a Simón
Pedro.

A prayer for persecuted Christians...Heavenly Father, we ask that you would make us ever mindful of our
brothers and sisters around the world who need us to
stand with them as they suffer in your name. Teach us
what it means to overcome by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of our testimony; we pray that we
would not love our lives so much as to shrink from
death. O Lord, hear our prayer.
Fall Scripture Study: The Book of Revelation...This
fall's adult scripture study will be on one of the most
talked about and least understood books of the Bible, the
Book of Revelation.
To register or for more information, please email Deacon Bill at
[email protected] or contact the CCE
Office (281-499-4612).
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It seems obvious to us that Jesus Christ is the Lord of
second chances. We need look no further than Peter’s denial and rehabilitation for proof. Yet early Christians were
more tentative with the gift of forgiveness. For them, every Sunday was an experience of the Lord’s power to heal
and forgive, yet there were three sins that placed persons
at the margins of the community’s life. In some places,
the rift caused by these sins was permanent. The sins were
apostasy (denial of the faith), adultery, and murder. They
were particularly detested because of their power to divide and even scatter the community gathered around the
Lord’s table. Fragile and persecuted communities could
crumble and disappear under the weight of a harm done
by a public sinner. Sinners were excluded from the community in the hope that “tough love” would help them
come to their senses and experience deeper conversion.
Inevitably, lists of grave sins grew longer as various bishops added their personal pet peeves to the roster, and
more people were required to do public penance. For
them, reconciliation was a once in a lifetime experience. Many sinners accepted their condition and hoped
for a chance at a deathbed reconciliation by anointing.
With more and more people permanently on the outs, the
church began to struggle toward the light of the Lord’s
unfailing gift of reconciliation.

’TIS THE GIFT TO BE SIMPLE
The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity:
’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free.
’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be.
This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today’s
Gospel that members of God’s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person
is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus’ time, as it does in ours.
The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart.

consigo muchas bendiciones (Santiago 3:16 — 4:3).
The Serra Clubs of District 10 of Serra International
encourage every Catholic to watch or lister to the
Mass in which Pope Francis will elevate Blessed Junipero Serra to Sainthood. The Mass is scheduled for
2:15 p.m. CST on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 on
EWTN television or radio (KSHJ 1430 AM) in the
Houston area.
Blessed Junipero Serra was responsible for 22 missions
being established in what is now western Mexico and
California. Serra International was established to promote and foster vocations to the priesthood and religious
life. Serrans and many others have been praying for years
for the canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra. Those
prayers have been answered.
There are eight Serra Clubs in District 10. The members
of the Serra Club of Southwest Houston invite you to consider joining us in working for vocations and supporting
those in the priesthood or religious life. If you are interested, call David Piwonka at 713-907-5131 or Carolyn
Bhansali at 713-774-7165.

Pope Francis Daily Meditation, September 14:
“Follow the way of the Cross against the temptations
of evil”. (Vatican Radio) “If we want to move forward
“on the path of Christian life" we must fall, just as Jesus
did when he carried the Cross.”
This was the message at the heart of Pope Francis’ homily
on Monday morning during Mass at Casa Santa Marta.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Toward the end of the second century, a churchman
in North Africa, Tertullian, described an early form of
penance. Imagine if it had survived! There were three
steps to this very public ritual. The unfortunate sinner was
brought before the community in an itchy garment of
goat’s hair. The communities of the day were small and
intimate, and everyone knew everyone else. The shame of
exposure for a big sin—murder, idolatry, or adultery—
would have been profound. The penitent would beg the
community for prayers of intercession, and then go sit in
a place assigned to penitents. After this public confession,
the penitent would be assigned some discipline, usually a
relatively severe fast, or the wearing of distinctive garb.
This remedy for sin was for a certain period of time, or at
least until the bishop (every small community has its own
bishop) judged that enough was enough. Then the person
would be readmitted to the eucharistic community, although Tertullian doesn’t tell us how. Probably the bishop
tenderly placed his hands on their heads, precisely where
they were anointed at baptism. We do know that the readmission of penitents to the eucharistic table became in
some churches a great celebration, and there are records
from Spain of bishops leading penitents in a dance like
processional into the eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday.

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday 2015
"Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person."
Those whom the community has designated to serve as
catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for
their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity
for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

September 27, 2015 Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
OUR PRODIGAL GOD
We keep having to relearn how prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite manage to say no. We think it is surely
fine when God is prodigal with us—rich in mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace. But what about the other—the
enemy, the sinner, the heretic, the outsider? Well, we expect God to be as stingy with that person as we are.
Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered how the spirit of God could be given to the two
who did not show up at the meeting tent—today’s church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained because there
were some miracle workers who were clearly not followers of Jesus. God’s great free wheeling generosity confounded
them all. Let this be, says Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead continue to be worthy of your calling.

Gift Shop News…The gift shop has many items for college students -- the gift of a prayer book is always a great
treat for a college student. Stop by our new (former)
space just off the courtyard by the church door closest to
the Confirmation window for a cup of coffee and a picture with Pope Francis. The gift shop will also be open
Wednesday evenings during CCE (5:30 to 7:30 pm).
Holy Family needs EMHCs to the homebound. Stating that we will be judged on our corporal and spiritual
works of mercy to those in need, Pope Francis described
the jubilee year (begins December 8, 2015) as a “good
opportunity for increasing the collaboration between pastors and the laity in the mission of affectionately and tenderly caring for the sick and dying.”
LIFE CHAIN- OCTOBER 4, 2015...Holy Family will
participate in this year's Life Chain on Highway 6
on October 4 -from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Our location will
be Riverstone Drive (near Kohls) to Lake Colony Drive
-in front of Wells Fargo Bank and LA Fitness 5406 Highway 6. This is a peaceful, prayerful time spent in supporting LIFE from conception until natural death. Sign up
will be on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 after all the Masses outside the back of the Church.
We need to purchase enough Pro-Life signs ($1 each)
from Christian Voices for Life for all attendees.
Questions or to sign up on line contact Kathy
Mroczkowski, [email protected] or cell
phone 281-223-2442
There will be an EMHC renewal for all currently
trained ministers on Monday, September 28, 2015,
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm in the Centennial Room. Please
arrive on time so we can begin promptly at 6:30 pm. If
you will not be able to attend the evening session, another
session will be held Saturday, October 3, 2015, 9:30 am Noon in the Assembly room. This is a very important
day and needed for our spiritual growth to continue in
this very important ministry. We have a new EMHC
guideline booklet that will be given to all who attend.
If you wish to make an announcement, such as birthdays, anniversaries,
sick, etc., submit a written note no later than Monday pm to the office.

Our biblical studies course on the Gospel of Luke continues on Fridays, at 9:30 am in the A/B meeting
room. All that is needed to participate is a bible and a
love of learning and sharing.
Mark your calendars -- November 6, 13 and 20 (Friday
mornings), we will be viewing the EWTN video series
Reasons for our Hope with Sr. Rosalind Moss discussing
the Gospel of Luke. Each session will begin at 9:30 am
in the A/B Meeting Room.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the
early church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their journey back to fellowship at the Lord’s table seems arduous
and even cruel. However, at no time in the process were
the penitents lacking the support of the community. Penances were performed for all to see, and we can tell from
the homilies of the day that people earnestly desired to
see the sinner benefit from the remedy. Tertullian reminded the penitents that they were living among their brothers
and sisters, fellow servants of the same Lord, still in the
embrace of the Spirit. He tells them that when they extend
their hands in blessing to the faithful, it is Christ they
touch. He tells them that when they see tears in the eyes
of believers, it is Christ who is interceding for them with
the Father.
There is a treasure of our tradition woven into this
history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer of
Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person down on
his or her luck; it was effective and necessary. The treasure we can see even through the tangles of history is this:
the Spirit of God is poured out on the church, and brings
grace, forgives sin, makes us holy, and always calls us to
fullness of life.

US: Prisoners in Philadelphia Made the Pope a Chair
for His Visit to Correctional Facility… Prisoner Says
He Feels 'Honored' to Contribute to Papal Project
Prior to Pope Francis' visit to the United States, prisoners
in Philadelphia have been working on making sure the
Pontiff has a nice place to sit when he meets with them,
reported Associated Press.
In the city's Industrial Correctional Center over the past
couple of weeks, inmates have been working on creating
a nearly six-foot tall chair they hand-carved out of walnut. Prisoners contributing were chosen based on work
ethic, skill and reliability.
Inmate Rameen Perrin, 21, who has spent slightly over a
year behind bars for drug charges, spoke on what being
chosen for the papal project meant to him: "It made me
honored because I'm one of the ones that work hard, and
they noticed."
At the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center, the
chair was made and refinished. At Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, another jail in the municipal system, it
will be upholstered. During his two-day trip to the city,
during the final leg of his three-city US visit, Francis will
meet with some 100 prisoners and their loved ones on
Sept. 27.
Assistant director of a vocational program in the Philadelphia prisons, Anthony Newman, designed this gift for
Pope Francis. "The fact that I got the privilege to do the
chair is good enough if I never see him sit in the chair,"
Newman said. "So I'm happy."
According to officials, expected among the prisoners who
will meet with the Pope are some of those who made the
chair. (D.C.L.)
