School Activities
From the Campus Principal
Jane Kuok
Dear Parents and Tenby Community,
Welcome back to everyone. It was great to see the School ‘buzzing’ again with students after the
short break.
Movement of Administration Team
The main office renovation is almost complete. All Administration staff will be moved to the
ground floor soon to make way for the development of a designated Sixth Form Learning Centre
on the first floor. The Accounts Department can now be accessed via a separate room next to the
main entrance.
Tenby Ipoh’s Open Week
Next week from Monday 11th April to Friday 15th April, the School will have an Open Week from
09:00hrs to 12:00hrs. This will be open to members of the public who wish to have a look at a
typical school day at Tenby. Visitors will be introduced to the Tenby Vision, our ethos and philosophy and then be taken on a tour of the School. Prefects and Senior Staff will be on hand to
answer any queries from parents.
SAFE STEPS Road Safety Awareness Launch
The end of Tenby Open Week will be marked with the launch of the SAFE STEPS Road Safety
Awareness Programme which will be officiated by Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh. SAFE STEPS is a
public service programme aimed at raising awareness about one of the world’s leading causes of
death, and aims to help to save lives by disseminating clear and simple educational messages
on road safety. This programme will be launched concurrently with 3 other Tenby Schools; Tenby
Setia Eco Park (KL), Tenby Penang and Tenby Setia Eco Garden, Johor via a live feed. There
will a number of VIPs visiting the School on this day from the Ministry of Education, the Traffic
Police Department, Principals from 38 other schools and the Executive Director from the
Prudence Foundation (SAFE STEPS sponsor) amongst others. Students from Standard 2/Year 3
upwards will be involved in the assembly. Subsequent details of road safety follow up
programmes will be sent home in due course.
Road Closure Outside School on Friday 15.04.16 from 08:15hrs – 08:45hrs
To launch the event there will be a Bicycle Rally. To accommodate this, the roads around the
School will be closed to the public from 08:15hrs – 08:45hrs. Therefore, if you arrive late to drop
off your child, you will need to park outside (in the designated areas guided by our Security
Guards) and walk in.
Parents Association
From next week onwards, the Parents’ Association will have a feature in the Weekly Newsletters.
Please keep a look out for the information published.
Ministry of Health (MoH) & Ministry of Education’s (MoE) Notice on Outdoor Activities
With the declared ‘heatwave’ by the MoE, schools were asked to stop all outdoor activities.
However, the latest information received from the MoH has stated that activities outdoors may
continue if the area shaded. Therefore, only CCAs in open areas will be cancelled next week.
These are: Netball, Track and Field, Cricket, Ultimate Frisbee, Golf, Football and Tennis. All other
CCAs in shaded areas outdoors will continue undisrupted.
Postponement of Sports Days
As there have been restrictions with outdoor activities until further notice, we need to postpone the planned Primary and Secondary Sports Days. The events have been rescheduled to the following dates:
Secondary Sports Day – Friday 20th May 2016 (07:45hrs – 12:30hrs)
Primary Sports Day – Saturday 16th July 2016 (07:45hrs – 11:00hrs)
Carmina Burana Updates - First combined choir rehearsal at Tenby SEP (From Dr. Jeff Rowlands: Director
of Music)
Tenby School’s performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the nation’s premier classical music venue, the
Dewan Filharmonic Petronas (DFP), is only 4 weeks away (May 8th). Students at all Tenby campuses are working
very hard to master the considerable demands that Orff’s masterpiece makes on its performers. The text uses 3
languages namely Latin, German and Old French (Provencal) within a total of 16 chorus numbers and a performance time of over an hour. The work requires a very large orchestra for which Andrew Auster, Campus Principal
of SEP and Director of Music for the performance, has assembled (in addition to a choir of some 200 voices) the
combined forces of the Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and
members of the percussion section of the Malaysian
Philharmonic Orchestra
Saturday March 19th saw choirs from Ipoh, Penang, Miri, Johor and KL assemble at Tenby SEP for the first combined choir rehearsal directed by Andrew. The Ipoh contingent travelled down to SEP by school bus, accompanied
by Ms. Stephanie Jukes and Dr. Rowlands. This was a gruelling but enjoyable 3 hour rehearsal in which Andrew
used his always-courteous-but-firm manner in taking the combined choirs through the music. The results were truly
remarkable for a first rehearsal and augur well for the May 8 performance. A further choral rehearsal at SEP is
scheduled for Saturday, May 7th followed by a full rehearsal with the combined orchestras on the Sunday at the
DFP. If you have not already decided to attend the concert I strongly advise you to do so as there is every likelihood that, to misappropriate a line from Shakespeare’s’ Henry V, many who don’t ‘shall think themselves accursed
they were not’ present at what we can reliably expect to be a stunning performance.
Carmina Burana Photo Competition
Tenby parents, students and choir members have a chance to win 2 tickets for the Carmina Burana performance
on Sunday 8th May at 18.00:hrs as well as hotel accommodation vouchers. The competition details are as follows:
The competition runs for two weeks from 11th to 22nd April,
Open to Tenby students, parents and choir members,
The Prize is 2 tickets to Carmina Burana with 2 days, 1 night hotel voucher at The Royal Bintang, The Curve,
Damansara, KL.
Photo entries will be posted on the school’s Facebook page. The photo which receives the most ‘likes’ will win,
Winning entries will be printed in the official Carmina Burana programme booklet,
Entrants are encouraged to be creative and to be take their photos against an appropriate background. To assist
with this a mini-booth will be set up in the foyer of the Block E (Admin.) providing a Carmina Burana ‘wheel of
fortune’ for photo entrants to use. Please send your entries to Ms. Lee Siew Peng at [email protected]
Developing Careers (From Ricky Singh: Key Stage 4 Leader)
We are looking to provide our students with a up-close and personal view of a wide variety of jobs and we need
YOUR experiences! Whether you are doctor, nurse, mechanic, astronaut, or business owner – we need YOU! You
are needed to share your occupation with us!
A Careers Day can have several valuable benefits for our students as they begin to look at their subject choices for
the IGCSE’s, AS/A2 Level examinations and beyond. We are looking for a variety of people interested in spending
a day talking to our students about their careers. Many of our students are unaware of the career opportunities
available to them and this is a fantastic way to provide them with first-hand knowledge of potential career paths.
This is also a great way for you to get involved with Tenby Schools Ipoh and make an impact on our students’
future.
In addition we are considering opening up work experience (3 – 5 days) for our older students.
If you are interested in volunteering or know of someone who is, then please register your interest with Lee Siew
Peng ([email protected]).
Thank you in advance for your involvement!
(If you have any questions or would like to get further information please email Mr. Ricky Singh at [email protected]).
Prompt Fee Payment
Thank you to those who have already paid. Please remember that fees should be paid by Friday 15th April to avoid
students being sent home until payment has been received.
Thank you.
Tenby Early Years Meru Campus
Welcome back to a new, exciting and enjoyable term in Early Years. We know you will
be interested in a summary of the activities your child will be undertaking during this
term. Our Course of Study will, of course, be sent home as well as be displayed on our
parent’s notice board at Block A. Activities will always be differentiated according to
your child’s strengths and needs and, as we know, children progress at their own pace.
The Nursery IPC topic this half term is ‘Going Places’ (Transport), and the Reception
class’ topic is ‘Houses and Homes’. Through these topics all areas of the Early Years
Curriculum will be covered. This includes both the prime and specific areas. Personal,
Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and
Language, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design. The majority of our
Mathematic and Literacy-focused activities will also be based around the current theme.
We always welcome visitors from outside school, especially parents or family members
who may wish to share their knowledge. They are very much appreciated and are of
great value to the children. If you feel that you have any knowledge/expertise in the
themes that we are covering in this next term, we would very much welcome your
involvement and contributions.
Once again, please do not hesitate to see your child’s Class Teacher, if you have any
questions about your child’s progress. Thank you for all your support. We know it makes
such a difference to your child’s progress.
Early Years End of Year Production
As Tenby tradition has it, Early Years children from Meru and TEYCI will join forces to
delight and entertain you with an end of year production. The title of this year’s show is
“Eddie the Penguin”, a cautionary tale about looking after the environment. Closer to
the time, we will ask parents and guardians to lend us a helping hand. If you think you
would like to volunteer your time, please keep an eye on this space for further
announcements!
In the meantime, dates relating to the production for your diary:
12th July – Full Rehearsal at Meru (8.00am)
14th July – Full Rehearsal at Meru MPH (8.00am)
15th July – Performance at Meru Campus (6.00pm)
And Finally..
We had so many beautiful spring bonnets at the end of last term that we just had to
share them with you.
Every Busy Bee came to school
with a spring bonnet. Well done
for full class participation. We love
your Tenby spirit!
Some of the Dragonflies made some amazing spring bonnets too!
Unfortunately Akshadhaa was absent for our Spring
Bonnet Parade, but Ms Shona was happy to take her
place.
Well done to all the ‘Mad Hatters’, and their parents for
taking part!
News from Tenby Early Years Centre
Welcome back to the start of the third term, after a well-rested break for Easter. There are lots instore
this term which you will enjoy together with your children.
As we ended the last term with Easter Bonnet Competition on 23rd March, we are pleased to share
with you some pictures taken during the event. The pictures below will be a testament to the excitement
and fun parents and students had during the competition. The turnout by parents was over whelming
with about 70 of them getting their hands messy with glue and decorative items in their quest to finish
their Easter Bonnet.
Parents busy making their Easter
Bonnet with their children.
“Happy Bonding Time”
Over the next few weeks, the students will focus on new IPC themes for this term. The Toddlers will
be working on “Transport”, Nursery - “Going Places (Transport)”, Reception will concentrate on
“Houses and Homes” while the Year 1 will be busy with “Let’s Celebrate”.
