October is a busy month indeed. In this issue of the Newsletter, we are featuring more than 5 pages worth of pictures from the events that took place in the last two weeks of October. We hope you’ll enjoy reading our ‘bumper’ issue for the year 2013! Halloween @ Tenby Halloween came early at Tenby as children from the Early Years took part in a small costume parade held at the Early Years Block on Friday, 25 October 2013. Mini superheroes, pirates, witches, monsters and princesses took turns to pose for photos during the photo-shoot session before they start their Halloween games. Children from the Early Years all dressed up for Halloween (more picture on the next page) ‘Pink’ October In conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the staff of Tenby Schools Ipoh, led by Ms Michelle Lim, organized a small get-together at the staff lounge on Friday, 25 Oct 2013. Adorned in pink outfits, the group also took a group photo with students at the foyer of the school. Photos taken were submitted to MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional or the Mr Gilman with Secondary students (Picture courtesy of Ms Michelle Lim) National Cancer Council) in support of their Pink October Awareness Campaign. On Saturday, 26 October 2013 roles were switched and parents were given the chance to experience school life at Tenby Schools Ipoh with lessons conducted by trained Tenby students. It was a well-received event and parents were very positive about the day. They have commended that the students were very organised and confident and felt that they had gained a good insight into our teaching and learning. The Global Perspectives Debates II 2013 Iron sharpens iron; one scholar sharpens another. It was in this spirit of scholarly debate that more than sixty students participated in the second series of Global Perspectives Debates organized by the Sixth Formers of Tenby Schools Ipoh on 18th October 2013. The debates drew strong participation from Tenby International School, Sekolah Tenby Ipoh as well as from SMK St Michael and SMK Anderson, Ipoh. Among the topics debated were “That no school should have more than 500 students “ and “That there should only be one House in Parliament.” Sekolah Tenby Ipoh emerged champions with a powerful oratorical impact by Victor Ho Jun Jie (KBSM 3) and Dhiphan Raj Sundram (KBSM 3). The Best Speaker award was clinched by Lim Hui Ben ( Sixth Form –Cohort 8). The Global Perspectives debates are organized bi-annually by Tenby Schools Ipoh to promote a culture of parliamentary debating among students in Ipoh’s schools. The debates are also designed to promote a spirit of global citizenship amongst young people. TIS Sixth Form The Annual Leadership Camp 2013 The Annual Leadership Camp for Sixth Formers was held from 3rd to 5th of September 2013 at the Barre IJ Centre, Tanah Rata, in the Cameron Highlands. It was attended by nineteen Sixth Formers in Cohort 8, our June 2013 intake. The focus of our camp was on the school’s vision of “A United World at Peace-Through Education.” The participants had great fun generating activities and songs featuring peace. They also reflected on “What Unites and What Divides”. Prior to arrival at their campsite, they made the customary trek uphill to Kampung Pergom, our adopted Orang Asli Village. They delivered the charity donations (packaged food, stationery and school materials) given by our entire school community to aid the pre-school centre in the village. On Day 2, in the midst of more serious camp discussions, our party explored the Sungai Pallas Tea Estate where among other things they learned that the average tea plant is 70 years old! Day 3 was perhaps the climactic phase of the camp when our party entered the Cameron rainforest for a three-hour hike under the guidance of Mr Rajan, our accomplished jungle scout who regaled us with his expert knowledge of the flora of the Cameron forests.
