Connect. Enrich. Inspire.
We are offering two new computer
classes this month: Publish Yourself - Learn to use free software
Mobipocket or Calibre to create
your own ebooks. Pin It! - Everything you need to know about
using Pinterest and Delicious, popular social bookmarking sites. Sign
up for these classes at the Reference desk today.
Get Caught Reading in May. We
are looking for pictures of people
reading - books, ereaders, newspapers, magazines, etc. If we see
you reading in the library, we may
ask to take your picture.
Throughout May, we will be taking
donations of items that will benefit
deployed and wounded soldiers.
For a list of needed items, visit the
library or soldiersangels.org.

STEM Kids
The Grand Forks Public Library
has formed a partnership with the
Dakota Science Center (DSC) and
the University of North Dakota
(UND) School of Engineering and
Mines in order to provide Science,
Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) activities to
library patrons.
STEM Kids was made possible by
generous grants from IEEEChicago (Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers) and the
North Dakota State Library. The
grant monies were used to purchase print and audiovisual STEM
materials, along with STEM kits
that will be used for programming. The STEM kits provide
hands-on learning opportunities,
and will help children excel at
school and explore new interests.

CAMIO
Visit museums and see thousands of
works of art, all without leaving the
library. OCLC’s Catalog of Art Museum
Images Online documents works of art
from around the world, representing the
collections of several prominent museums. CAMIO can only be accessed
using a library computer.

To try CAMIO, click Online Databases on
our homepage or the Research page.
The database page will open, showing a
complete list of library databases. Click
on the CAMIO graphic, and the website
will open in a new window. You will have
the option to choose the type of art you
would like to browse. Click more for a
full list of art types, as well as a list of
contributing museums. You can see all
items from an individual museum by
clicking on the name of the museum.
There is also a search bar at the top of
the page.
There does not seem to be any order to
the results list (unless you choose to
view the list of items from an individual
museum, which are listed in alphabetical
order). You can refine the results by
date, format, creator, and sometimes
subject.
To view the details about a piece of art,
click the name or the thumbnail image.
The CAMIO Work Viewer will open with a
large image of the art and information
about the creator, a description (not
available for all art pieces), the museum
where it is housed, and other important
facts. You can also view the image in
high-resolution. From the high-res window, you will be able to download the
image. Please read the Rights statement
at the bottom of the Work Viewer window to make sure your intended use of
the image does not violate any Terms
of Use. Most images can be used for non
-commercial, educational purposes.
When working with images, you can save
anything you want to study further by
clicking Add to favorites, located at the
top and bottom of the Work Viewer. This
is also where you will find the Reference
URL needed to cite the work properly.
You can zoom in and out, pan left, right,
up and down, view the image in maximum resolution, fit the image to the window, show/hide the reference thumbnail, and clip the image, which allows
you to copy the whole image, or specific
details from it, and print or email it.

In order for all of the children to
have a hands-on experience with the
kits, STEM Kids will be limited to 8
children per session. The first three
weeks of programming will be for
children in grades K-2, and the final
four weeks of programming will be
for grades 3-6. Because of the limited space, we are requiring parents
to fill out a short application form
for each child. Not all children who
fill out an application will be able to
attend STEM Kids this summer, however, all of the STEM kits can be
used again and we plan on hosting
an after school STEM Kids in the fall.

What’s New
We now have pay-as-you-go photocopying. The machine accepts nickels, dimes, quarters, dollar coins
and one dollar bills, so make sure
you have your change handy. If you
need help using the new system,
please ask at the Circulation desk.
Mango Languages now has an app
for Android! You can learn any of the
almost 40 languages offered by
Mango, as well as English as a
second language, right on your
phone.
How much does this interactive,
portable, and all around awesome
application cost users? Great question. It's FREE - no asterisks or fine
print. The Android™ App, along with
our iPhone® App, is included in the
library's Mango subscription.

garden club open to kids in grades K
-6. If your child is excited about digging in the dirt or curious about gardening then be sure to sign up! The
Children’s Garden Club is free and
will be a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity. The Children’s Garden Club is meant to spark interest

started in the garden on May 17. We
are tentatively planning on meeting

Brian and Chulita Goodman recently
held a baby shower and requested
that friends and family donate to the
Children’s Department of the Grand
Forks Public Library in lieu of gifts.
Over $1,000 was donated to the
Children’s Department.
Thanks to the donation, the Children’s Department has purchased
(thus far) a puppet theater, Edushape EduBlocks, jumbo magnetic
letters and numbers, a Learning Rug,
a LEGO Cinderella’s Castle and LEGO
Deluxe Train Set.
All this month, the Children’s
department will be holding a donation drive to benefit CVIC. They are
in need of children’s items. A list will
be posted in the library.
