“Building A Future Full of Hope”
Jeremiah 29:11
Dear Friends in Christ,
Annual reports, like this one for the Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota, provide a good moment for gratitude,
and in the Diocese of Sioux Falls we have much for which to be grateful.
As you will see in the pages to follow, generosity takes many forms. Some gifts provide assistance to parishes, schools,
cemeteries and other local Catholic needs. Some gifts are made in memory of or in honor of an inspirational person. Gifts
are also made to support broader church needs – like seminarian education, the TV Mass, or the Cathedral restoration.
Many gifts are made for the future as part of an annuity, a charitable trust or an estate plan. Gifting comes from
participation in the numerous charitable events held each year – including Christmas at the Cathedral concerts, and the
charity fishing, hunting and golf tournaments.
The professional and skilled staff of the Catholic Foundation work hard to facilitate these many forms of generosity. They
are guided by some of the best minds available, the Catholic Foundation’s board of directors, who in still another form of
generosity, give of their time and expertise.
While there are many paths to be generous, our gratitude must always be directed to our Loving God from whom all our
gifts derive. St. Paul said, in his letter to the Romans, “I give thanks to my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because
your faith is heralded throughout the world.” Perhaps the deep faith of Catholics in this diocese is not yet heralded around
the world, but I indeed give thanks to God through Jesus Christ for the many generous ways your faith is expressed.
May God bless you and Mary watch over you and those you love.
Yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Paul J. Swain
Bishop of Sioux Falls
With a deep sense of gratitude to God and hope for the future we present this annual report of activities of the Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota. All we are
and all we have is a gift from God - not for our possession, but for our stewardship - to nurture and grow and return with increase to our Lord. In the following pages
you will see for fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, the Catholic Foundation’s stewardship of its:
• 286 permanent endowments - that are donor designated - to various ministries totaling $34,495,385 (increase of 13 endowments and $5,135,763)
• 243 agency accounts managed for parishes, schools and other ministries totaling $18,036,458 (increase of 14 agency accounts and $3,107,074)
• 89 charitable gift annuities, totaling $2,402,495
• 14 charitable trusts managed, totaling $6,412,104
• The financial statements from the Catholic Foundation’s annual independent audit by Eide Bailly LLP
In spite of many challenges today, the ministries of our church continue to be blessed:
• Total assets amounted to $67 million (an increase of $9 million)
• 8,390 gifts (increase of 772) were received totaling $11,937,896
• Investment returns, using Catholic moral and social screens, were 21.5% net of fees, and in the top 9% of all reporting community foundations in the country
over the past 10 years*
• The Catholic Foundation has $53 million in future planned gifts in will, trust beneficiary designations and life insurance policies (estimated fair value)
• Most importantly, the Catholic Foundation distributed $6,022,653 this past year to a variety of parishes, schools and ministries across eastern South Dakota, our
country and the world
What makes the Catholic Foundation different from other foundations? The Catholic Foundation’s investment objectives are pursued with consideration
for Catholic moral and social teaching. In addition, the Catholic Foundation will not make distributions or grants to charities that are not consistent with the
teachings of the Catholic Church.
Why the Catholic Foundation? For people who care about Catholic values, the Catholic Foundation is a great
way to pass on our faith - one of the greatest of all gifts - helping build what the prophet Jeremiah called, a future full
of hope. When one is thinking of leaving a legacy - a gift in perpetuity - the Catholic Foundation will ensure that it is
handled consistent with the donor’s values and wishes.
We are grateful for Bishop Swain’s leadership and that of our volunteer board members in fulfilling our mission to
advance the work of the Church in eastern South Dakota and beyond. We ask for your continued prayers for the
ministry of the Catholic Foundation and for the parishes, schools and ministries that it supports.
Gratefully yours in Christ,
Tim Czmowski

Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota
annual report
2010-11
• In Memoriam •
“Words are not capable of capturing this special man, Jeremiah Murphy,” said Most Reverend Paul J.
Swain in a statement following Jeremiah’s passing on February 4, 2011. Ten months later it hasn’t gotten
any easier. The challenge comes in where to start and what to include because Jeremiah was so deeply
involved in matters of family, faith, business, community and state and his life and work so positively
impacted each.
The Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota provides a good example. Jeremiah and Mary Jean
were active board members. Jeremiah helped incorporate the foundation in 1987 and was active in
the investment committee which guided the financial oversight of the foundation. They were active
and generous donors, most recently with the Cathedral of St. Joseph restoration effort. And Jeremiah
was an advocate – often encouraging others to participate in Catholic Foundation events, and assisting
foundation staff with financial planning details and options for donors.
And the Catholic Foundation was just one area of Jeremiah’s active stewardship. He
served on the diocesan Finance Council and through the years served as a trusted
advisor to five bishops. Said Bishop Swain in the homily at Jeremiah’s funeral, “I
so appreciated his honest and direct approach: tell it like it is, deal with the facts as
they are, treat people justly and do so with humor.” Catholic education and Catholic
healthcare were two more areas in which he had profound impact through the years.
As Bishop Swain also noted in his homily, Jeremiah’s spiritual home since his north
end youth was the Cathedral and he was excited about the restoration, “Jeremiah was
one of the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of the restoration of St. Joseph
Cathedral. He most wanted to see restored the colorization of the artwork reliefs,
including the nativity scene and the Stations of the Cross which he remembered with
such fondness from his youth growing up in the north end. While the restoration is
not yet complete, the beautification is, and Jeremiah feasted his eyes upon it. We
celebrated Christmas Midnight Mass in the Cathedral with
temporary furnishings. There he was in the first row. He kept
looking around with a big smile on his face and occasional tears
in his eyes. He told me I never thought it would happen in my
lifetime. But it did, in great part because of him.”
Now of course the entire Cathedral project is completed. We
are grateful for the inspiration provided by Jeremiah and Mary
Jean, not only for the Cathedral, but in all the ways he assisted,
mentored, shaped and led by example and word.
Simple &Practical Gifts
The Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota
has the staff and expertise to assist donors with
complex and challenging financial planning.
donors direct the distributions directly to the Catholic
Foundation, thereby avoiding any taxable income.
The donor does not receive a charitable contribution,
and a donation of up to $100,000 can be directed to
ministries they wish to support.
But more often donors already know how to make a
meaningful, logical and simple gift.
A common example is the donation of a load of grain.
When the load is delivered to the elevator or terminal,
the donor simply has the proceeds from the sale of the
grain directed to the Catholic Foundation. “This has
been and continues to be popular with a number of
our farmers and ranchers through the years,” said Bette
Theobald, Vice President for Planned Giving. The same
idea can be used with cattle or any other commodity.
“We are pleased to be able to assist our donors in
meeting both their charitable intent and financial
need,” said Kelly Bartmann, CTFA and Gift Planner
for the Catholic Foundation.
Another example is the distribution of IRA proceeds for those over the age
of 70 1/2. Since the law requires a mandatory distribution at that point, some

An easy way to leave a legacy
One of the easiest and most
meaningful gifts you can make is
a bequest. A bequest is a gift you
pass to a person or entity through
your will. There are several ways
to write a bequest, each creating a
slightly different result.
other terms of your will have been
satisfied, be paid to the ministries
of your choice.
Percentage bequest: A bequest
may be expressed as a percentage
of your estate. Expressed in this
way, your wishes are
fulfilled regardless of
whether your estate grows
larger or smaller.

Donald E. Taylor left a lasting legacy
by making the Catholic Foundation
beneficiary of his estate. He established
the Taylor Endowment Fund benefitting
the Cathedral of St. Joseph, The Mother
Teresa Fund for Life, Seminarian
Education and Priest Retirement.
Charitable bequests are deductable
from federal estate taxes.
Leveraging this benefit can often
result in a larger estate passing to
your non-charitable heirs, such as
family members and friends.
If you decide to make a charitable
bequest to the Catholic Foundation
you also choose the type of
bequest that best fits your needs:
Contingent bequest:
Certain criteria are met
before a contingent
bequest is satisfied. For
example, you might
designate that the Catholic
Foundation receive all
or some of your estate
only in the event you
outlive your primary
beneficiaries.
Restricted bequest: You
may wish to restrict your
bequest for a specific
purpose or to support a particular
parish, school or other ministry.
Regardless of which option you
choose, a bequest allows you
to forever be associated with a
favorite cause or program. Consult
your professional advisor for
additional information.
Specific bequest:
This kind of
bequest specifies
an exact dollar
amount or specific
asset from your
estate, such as
stocks, bonds, or a
piece of real estate.
Residuary
bequest: This
Sisters, Madonna and Modesta Opbroek, made a
bequest directs
bequest in their estate that upon their death will
that either all or
establish the Hubert J.Opbroek Family Endowment in
a percentage of
memory of their parents.

There are “Top Ten” lists for all types of things. After seeing a Catholic version of “things to do before you die” in
Our Sunday Visitor, we decided to take a crack at our own list. Here are our suggestions:
10. Write a note of appreciation to your pastor, deacon, religious or even the bishop for his/her vocation and
ministry.
9. Read the Bible all the way through.
8. Walk the Via Dolorosa (Way of the Cross) in Jerusalem or visit Lourdes, France; Fatima, in Portugal or Our
Lady of Guadalupe, in Mexico.
7. Send an anonymous sacrificial (larger than usual) gift to the Good Shepherd Center, St. Francis House, Avera
Free Clinic, St. Vincent de Paul, or similar charity.
6. Go on a silent retreat at Broom Tree.
5. Visit and bring Communion to the sick, elderly or someone homebound.
4. Write letters to people you love, thanking them for being who they are (don’t forget to mention specifics).
3. Forgive those who have injured or offended you.
2. Tell someone what God has done for you.
1. Leave a legacy – reflect on the gifts God has generously given you and prayerfully consider treating the
church like one of your children in your estate plan.

Supporting
Parishes
St.
Agnes
Parish
Vermil
l
ion
St. Agnes Parish, Vermillion has asked the
Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota
for help in planning and strategizing towards
the long range successful future of the parish
community.
Led by their pastor, Father John Fischer, a core
group of parishioners is seeking ways to sustain
and improve on what most would view as an
already successful parish. The parish has no
debt, many active members, increasing school
enrollment and successful ministries.
But they believe there is work to do. Parish and
steering committee members Pat and Theresa
Wingen, owners of Aladdin Industries said, “We
want to be a model parish. We must all work
full time at our spirituality, our stewardship of
all of the gifts we have been given by God, our
humanitarian responsibilities, the education and
faith formation of our children and ourselves,
and what we are individually willing to sacrifice
to make a difference”.
In other words, there is opportunity to make
the good even better, and here are some specific
ways:
•
St. Agnes School now is through 5th grade, with increasing enrollment and space demands.
•
Teacher salaries are well below local standards and teacher training resources do not exist.
•
Religious education programs need more support
•
The rectory is aging quickly
•
Deferred maintenance on all buildings is adding up.
•
The parish has two cemeteries with long term endowment needs.
•
More tuition assistance would allow additional students to receive a Catholic education.
2010-2011 Annual Report - Catholic Foundation for Eastern South Dakota
Said Father Fisher, “While this will require an
extraordinary commitment from parish families
and others, the goal could not be more clear;
building a faith community at St. Agnes that
is second to none and that works tirelessly
to ensure that our children, members of our
families and members of our communities find
their faith and salvation in Jesus Christ”.
The steering committee is thinking about the
ultimate – that means helping people get to
heaven. “If our singular focus and our most
powerful reason for being as a parish is to
help people to eternal salvation, then we
must help our children understand, whether
in Catholic school or not, their faith and their
responsibilities as members of a community,
and help leaders in their families and members
of a faith community walk hand in hand with
what Jesus expects of us as Christians,” said
Tim Tracy, steering committee member.
No specific objectives have been formally set
and planning continues.
