Peter Yarrow’s career spans more than four decades. Throughout these years,
many issues moved Peter to commit his time and talent: equal rights, peace,
the environment, gender equality, homelessness, hospice care and education.
With his singing partners, Paul and Mary, Peter participated in the Civil
Rights Movement, in 1963 to sing for the historic march in Washington, DC
led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the Selma-Montgomery march
in 1965. Peter produced numerous events for the Peace/anti-Vietnam War
movement, including festivals at Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium.
He co-organized the 1969 Celebration of Life, the famous peace March on
Washington, in which some half-million people participated.
Peter recently founded “Don’t Laugh At Me,” a non-profit organization, based
on his belief that music, with its power to build community and catalyze
change, is a powerful organizing tool and a source of inspiration for children.
Peter Yarrow’s life and work, culminates with his leadership of Operation
Respect and embraces the premise that if each person articulates his or her
own voice and joins with others, together, they can become a powerful force
for the transformation of society.
Mr. Sanders is a familiar face onstage, most recently in That Hopey Changey
Thing with his wife, Maryann Plunkett, and Stuff Happens, as George W.
Bush at the Pubic Theater, many seasons at Shakespeare in the Park, and on
Broadway as Alfred Doolittle in Shaw’s Pygmalion with the Roundabout, on
television, as Captain for the final season of Law & Order, Criminal Intent and
guest starring on the new series Body of Proof, and on film in the upcoming
summer blockbuster Green Lantern. His voice is familiar from narrating
numerous audiobooks and PBS documentaries.
On Broadway, Ms. Plunkett received a Tony Award for her performance in
Me and My Girl, and also appeared in Sunday in the Park with George, The
Crucible, St. Joan, and A Man for All Seasons. Recently, she guest-starred on
the tv series Rubicon, The Good Wife, and Damages. Her film credits include
this season’s Blue Valentine and The Company Men. She has participated in
the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab and is looking forward to returning to the
Public Theater this Fall in Richard Nelson’s sequel to That Hopey Changey
Thing with her husband, Jay O. Sanders.
Host - Ruben Santiago-Hudson
Tony and Obie award-winning actor, Ruben Santiago-Hudson is also an
accomplished writer and director. His many credits include the role of
Captain Roy Montgomery on the hit ABC series Castle, starring as King
Leontes in Shakespeare in the Park’s 2010 production of A Winter’s
Tale, playing opposite Halle Berry in Their Eyes Were Watching God; Denzel
Washington and Russell Crow in American Gangster; Demi Moore and Kevin
Costner in Mr. Brooks; Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft; Al Pacino in Devil’s
Advocate; John Travolta in Domestic Disturbance; and Ricky Gervais in The
Invention of Lying. His screenplay debut Lackawanna Blues, for HBO,
originally commissioned for the Public Theater/NY Shakespeare
Festival, received the Humanitas Prize, a Christopher Award, National Board
of Review Honors, NAACP Image Award; and Emmy, Golden Globe and
WGA nominations.
Auctioneer - Ric Cherwin, Cherwin Auctioneers
Ric Cherwin, known as the singing auctioneer, is one of The Cherwin
Brothers (Ric and Barry). They inspire audiences to enthusiastically
translate their passion for a cause into considerable financial support.
Cherwin auctions are known for their energy, joie de vivre, pace, warmth and
for generating lucrative results for the sponsoring organizations, regularly
raising more than the organization ever did before. Ric recently served as
auctioneer for the South Asia Excellence Awards show, televised to over 100
million people throughout Europe and Asia.
Welcome to the 4th LaGuardia Arts Benefit Auction
ood evening and thank you for coming to what is certain to be a spectacular evening. A great deal of
time, energy and creativity on the part of our dedicated volunteers has gone into bringing this event
to fruition. You can expect fine dining, wonderful entertainment (including the LaGuardia 2011 Senior
Jazz Band!), and a vast array of fabulous items to bid on. Not to mention, this is a wonderful opportunity
to meet other parents, staff members and alumni of LaGuardia, as well as our delightful student volunteers.
Over the past four years, the auction has become the major fundraiser of the Parents Association, providing more
than 60% of our yearly income. This money goes directly to the benefit of our kids, to provide supplies and equipment
needed to ensure LaGuardia continues to provide the top-flight arts education that has made it the city’s most famous
school. As you place your bids this evening, please keep in mind that whatever you spend goes towards making our
school a better place for our children.
We would like to give a great big thank you to this year’s Co-chairs of the auction, Melissa Bachner and Valarie
Bennett, for taking on the mammoth task of organizing the event. Heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers, especially
the committee heads, who have put in countless hours over the past few months making this evening a reality. Our
gratitude also goes to the staff of LaGuardia and to Alumni and Friends who have supported this effort from the getgo. And, of course, there would be no auction without the generosity of all the donors and sponsors, corporate and
individual. To them, we are most grateful.
Have a great time tonight – and support our school!

LaGuardia Arts Parents Association
ear Guests,
Welcome! We are so happy to have you here to celebrate the wonderful community that is LaGuardia
Arts High School. As you may know, this amazing event was created only four years ago by parent Debra
Wells, who “graduated” last year. Now it is our “senior” year and where has the time gone! We are amazed
at how far the auction has come in just four short years. It has grown exponentially not only in attendees but in the
money raised for the school. Our first auction raised $50,000, the next year $100,000 and last year over $150,000. If
we meet our goal for this year, we will have raised $500,000 these past four years to support and enrich our kids’
experience within their arts education. These are very important funds in this time of shrinking DOE budgets and all
of the money goes towards augmenting the school facilities and supplies that enhance our kids’ experience here at
LaGuardia.
The auction, like our kids, has matured and grown. It has become an eagerly anticipated event, not only as a fundraiser
for the school but also as an exciting night of entertainment and celebration for the whole community. Let’s join together
for the school, celebrate our kids’ achievements and enjoy a wonderful evening knowing that we are also helping and
improving our community. And what a wonderful and caring community it has been for us. We’ve worked hard but with
gratitude and pride for our school and what it has given our kids. All the best, and here’s to the continuing success of
the Auction and LaGuardia Arts!
Here’s to the kids!

MUSICAL EXCELLENCE IS ACHIEVED
BY SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH EXCELLENCE
Steinway & Sons is proud to be the preferred choice of the Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music
& Art and Performing Arts and to play our part in helping to provide their gifted students with an
uncompromising level of musical inspiration.
Another New York institution dedicated to musical excellence is Steinway Hall. A must-visit for any
student of piano, Steinway Hall features music rehearsal rooms equipped with expertly prepared
Steinway pianos and the largest selection of Steinway pianos available for home rental or purchase
anywhere in the world.
Bring this page with you to Steinway Hall in order to receive
a free hour in one of our rehearsal rooms (a $30 value)
when you purchase one hour at regular price.
