Spring 2009 - Matlock Town Council
Matlock Alive Newsletter Spring 2009 HANDY VAN SERVICES PHOTO 1 This joint venture aims to make it safer for older and vulnerable people to live in their own homes by doing small tasks for them. Derbyshire Dales has its own dedicated Handy Van Service (including, of course, the services of handyman/woman) and it is available to those who are 60 or over or have been referred. The service is free and can be used up to twice a year. Practical help could include fitting and checking smoke alarms, hanging curtains, installing key safes, and path and door access clearance. The service is available Monday to Friday 9—5 pm. It cannot, however, deal with some emergency plumbing or electrical problems. Referral can be made, with an individual’s agreement, for additional support from other Agencies. The telephone number for all requests and queries is 0845 850 8013 DENEFIELDS Breathing Spaces Project A volunteer group meets every week at Denefields Conservation Area to help manage the site and make improvements. They have been installing a pond dipping platform and putting the finishing touches to a new pond. Matlock Town Council would like local schools and community groups to use it for pond dipping. The volunteers have also been creating a mini-beast hunt area, which includes a mini-beast hotel. A funding application has been made to run community events on PHOTO 2 the site this summer. It is hoped to include bird box making workshops, mini-beast adventures, pond dipping and a hay meadow restoration weekend. We will know if the application was successful in April and keep you posted about forthcoming events! Anyone is welcome to join the Volunteers and a health project also runs as part of the group. They take part in all kinds of outdoor activities: pruning, litter picking, step building and pond management to name a few. Activities are fun, rewarding, keep you active and suitable for all abilities. Contact Karen Camara on 07966 883253 or e-mail [email protected].
