Many thought we were in the Bronx or that we were a crime-ridden slum. In reality, no part of Washington Heights and Inwood was ever a slum and we were then, and still are, one of the safest neighborhoods in all of NYC. We are, of course, still in Manhattan—although a recent survey conducted by a Scottish pollster did show considerable support among local residents for independence. We decided to stage an event that would attract people to our community to see not only where it was, but what it was—a great place to visit and a great place to live and conduct business in. Ideas were floated around events that would take advantage of our cultural attractions, including the Hispanic Society, American Academy of Arts and Letters, Audubon Terrace Historic District, Trinity Cemetery, Church of the Intercession, Yeshiva University, Columbia University/Presbyterian Medical Center, Sylvan Terrace, the Audubon Ballroom, Loew’s 175th Street Theatre, the Little Red Lighthouse, G.W. Bridge and Bus Station, Saint Francis X Cabrini Shrine, Dyckman Farmhouse, Castle Village, Hudson View Gardens, the Highbridge and Croton Aqueduct Water Tower, Baker Field, Morris Jumel Mansion and our wonderful parks. It was mentioned that the Cloisters Museum, our best known and most visited local cultural institution, used to have a festival within their walls that featured Medieval music and craft activities. The last one had occurred sometime in the early 1970s. It sounded like a great idea. A festival committee was organized, in large part, through the efforts of local resident Bob Isaac. A “Medieval Festival Guild of New York” was established, directed by Madeline Pelner Cosman, PhD (Director of the Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at City College) and co-chaired by John K. Lattimer, MD (member of the Arms and Armor Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and local resident Al Blumberg, PhD. The Cloisters was not able to house the new festival, but Fort Tryon Park, which surrounds it, was. After only a year of development, the first Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park was held on September 23rd, 1983. This was accomplished thanks to the volunteer efforts of dozens of local residents and the entire staff of the Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation (WHIDC). The event attracted several thousand visitors and featured a variety of performers, some of whom are with us today. In 1986, when issues with insurance coverage prevented its production, the Guild was discontinued. Our late, great Councilman Stan Michels stepped in to secure the New York City Parks and Recreation as a festival sponsor and WHIDC, a not-for-profit organization, as producer. The festival was revived in 1988 and has continued ever since. The festival has grown to become the largest scheduled event in all NYC Parks and now attracts an average attendance of over 60,000 people from all over NYC and the surrounding region. This has been accomplished despite the fact that we have never had a major corporate sponsor. Our success is due to the dozens of volunteers and the active involvement of the NYC Parks Department and the Fort Tryon Park Trust.
