President’s Message
In October of 2006, the Daily Local
News published a special advertising
supplement entitled "Chester County's
Chambers of Commerce”. In it they
listed some eleven area chambers of
commerce in our region, including our
own local chamber.
The supplement defined a chamber
of commerce as "an alliance of member
businesses, individuals and organizations that join to support business." The
article went on to describe chambers of
John Jaros
commerce as the primary source for
businesses, along with individuals, who are seeking information on the business climate in a particular community. As
the article states, a chamber of commerce is indeed a collective voice which speaks from a much broader economic
framework than any individual business ever could.
As I assume the role of President of the Southern Chester
County Chamber of Commerce this year, I do so with great
excitement and anticipation in trying to take our chamber to
the next level. The Chamber's Board of Directors have established goals and objectives for this year and the coming years
to try and increase the visibility of the businesses in our area
as well as to provide value-added service to our membership
and the local community. We hope these efforts will result in
creating a business environment where existing businesses
will continue to prosper and thrive and new businesses will
desire to locate in Southern Chester County.
What I would like to try and stress this year in my term as
President of the Chamber is service to you its members. We
want to continue to provide value-added service to our
members. In so doing, if there is something you think we
could do in addition to what we are already doing, or do it in
a better way, please try and seek out one of the fourteen
Directors, or myself, the Chamber Executive Director, Aileen
Glass, or the Chamber Secretary, Tina Altman, and let us
know your thoughts and suggestions.
We look forward to continuing to make the Chamber an
organization that is providing you its members what they
need and desire in order to further promote business and
enterprise here in Southern Chester County. Southern Chester
County is certainly a great place to live and even a better
place to work and do business.
Sincerely,
John Jaros, President

We've had a busy time these last few
months. Our Annual Dinner was a great
success. Thank you to everyone who
responded so generously with sponsorships and of course, thanks to all who
attended. Our Committees have been
extremely busy and are playing an
important part in providing innovative
opportunities to network, advertise, and
learn how to make your business more
successful. Our Membership Committee
helped organize a successful "New
Members' Breakfast", with over 45
people attending, sponsored by Taylor &
Ochroch. We enjoyed a Members'
Meeting Luncheon with 56 members
brushing up on their time management
and organizational skills, thanks to
Victoria Papi of Organizing with "Keep it
Simple". I think by the time this issue is
out, we also will have had a successful
Business Card Exchange at the new
Sovereign Bank in Avondale. Check the
SCCCC website often to keep current on
our upcoming events! This month the
Communications Committee brings you
a great new idea for advertising. I'm sure
the phone at the office will be ringing
off the hook to take advantage of this
opportunity. Read on!!!

FRONT PAGE SPOTLIGHT!!!
The Communications Committee of
the SCCCC is excited to bring the
Chamber's members a great new way to
spotlight their companies. Beginning
with the next Newsletter, we invite you
to reserve your space on the front-page
for an article about your company! You
can give a brief history of the company,
tell about your products, your management team, your employees, and
anything special you may be doing.
This is your chance to tell the Chamber's
entire membership, over 600 businesses
and countless visitors to the Chamber's
website, what you do and why you
think you do it better than anyone else!
Your article should be approximately
500 words, and you may include
camera-ready artwork or picture of your
building, store, or employees if you
wish. You will, however, need to reduce
the number of words if you submit
artwork or a picture.
In addition to your front-page spotlight article, we will include a ¼-page ad
of your camera-ready copy in three
subsequent or surrounding Newsletters.
The total cost of the package is only
$1200, to be paid in advance. Any
design costs associated with the ¼-page
ads or article will be added to the price.
But wait - there's more!!! Not only
does your article appear on the frontpage of the Newsletter, it will be
featured on our website on the
Newsletter link until the next Newsletter
is published! This is a fantastic package
deal. We plan to publish six Newsletters
annually, so your article will serve as
prime advertising for your company for
two months! Reserve your preferred
issue now while it is still available.
The Board of Directors reserves the
right to edit the article, but you may
request a copy of the final edited article
before it is published.
Contact Tina Altman today at the
SCCCC office to reserve your front-page
space!

2007 Outstanding Citizen
Congratulations to Eva Verplanck,
the recipient of the Chamber's 2007 Outstanding Citizen Award.
Eva Verplanck has a lifetime of experience volunteering in the health,
human services, social justice, environmental, and arts/cultural fields in
Southern Chester County and Wilmington. She has been a dedicated
volunteer in our community since her family moved to Kennett
Township in 1953.
In recognition of her in-dept involvement, Eva received the Lifetime
Achievement Award from the Brandywine Chapter of the National
Society of Fundraising Executives in 1994. In 1995, Eva was presented
with the Women of Vision Award from the YWCA of New Castle County
in Delaware. In 2007, Eva was presented with the Jordan Award, the
Chester County Community Foundation's highest award to recognize
lifetime philanthropy and community engagement.
Currently, at age 83, Eva is a member of the Kennett Area Park
Authority and a Board member of the Red Clay Valley Association, testaments to her concern for the environment.
Eva Verplanck is a stellar example of a community volunteer, one
who takes on challenging leadership positions and inspires others to
become involved on an array of levels. She is also extremely generous
with her time, nurturing newcomers to the region and helping them to
become involved; and providing sage counsel to other Board leaders to
2007 SCCCC President Dennis Melton with Eva Verplanck, help them navigate organizational challenges. Southern Chester County
is rich in many many ways, due to Eva's influence and giving.

2008-2009 Membership Directory
Members - 2008 is a directory year for the Chamber and all
members in good standing (2008 membership dues paid)
receive two free listings - an alphabetical one and one in the
classified section. Members also receive a substantial
discount on all ad space. Through the directory, a business
can reach 2,000 area businesses and homes continually
throughout a two-year period.
SCCCC's new two-year business directory goes to press in
April and will be available in June. The directory size will be
8 1/2 by 11 inches and will contain information on each
chamber member's business or profession. It will also
include a guide to municipal officials and services, legislators, school district offices and administrators, day care

centers, parks, churches and service organizations. The directory is distributed to all chamber members, sent out in relocation packets, supplied in quantity to realtors and retirement communities, and given to anyone requesting a copy.
It plays a vital role in promoting area business and industry.
SCCCC members use the directory to network and to do
business with other members. The community uses it as a
means of getting to know the area and its businesses.
Don't miss out being listed in this valuable community and
business resource - be sure your 2008 dues are paid by March
15th. As always, thank you for your support of the Chamber
and its activities.
