Hello Again,
Have you been following the trouble
in Greece? The long and short of it is
the Greek Economy is on the verge of
collapse. The powers behind the Euro
have refused to lend any more Euros to
Greece unless the Greece Government
agrees to a severe austerity program
and payback plan. A plan arranged by
the Euro powers. Now this is the short
of it. The Greeks rejected Europe’s
bailout terms. It appears that terms
were too harsh and the Greeks knew
they could not comply so why try?
The Greece financial problem is long
standing. It appears that German
Chancellor Angela Merkel first agreed
in 2010 to bail out Greece. At that time
Chancellor Merkel met with weighted
resistance from various political
groups, newspapers and economists.
In other words a strong resistance is
demanding that Greece should not be
offered any more financial help and
basically be dropped out of the Euro
Group of Countries.
I have predicted that Germany would
become the most powerful nation in
Europe and now it seems whatever
side Germany takes on financial issues
in the European Euro group is the way
all of Europe will go. A most powerful
Germany again — shudder.
Hats off to R-Senator James L.
Seward of Oneonta. Senator Seward, a
Republican and staunch critic of the
Safe Act, announced that the state
republican majority has secured a
legally binding memorandum of understanding with the office of Governor
Cuomo suspending further action. In
other words, for the time being the
intrusive, expensive, unwieldy database and background check for simple
ammunition sales will not be going into
effect in our state. It appears to be a
clear victory for second amendment
rights in New York State. Keep up the
fight and maybe we can have the New
York Safe Act wiped out. Keep on keeping up the New York Safe Act signs.

During my youth I enjoyed Roy

It was told that one evening J.P.
Morgan went to dinner at the home of
a junior partner. Mrs. Smith, wife of
the junior partner, gave instructions to
her children and staff not to stare at
Mr. Morgan’s extremely large nose or
make comments about it. “Please,” she
admonished, “do not mention the word
nose in his presence.” The maid and
children behaved as true troopers. At
the end of the meal, Mrs. Smith said
“Now Mr. Morgan, it’s time for tea and
dessert, would you like a little sugar or

Letter to the Hello Again dated
July 9, 2015
Dear “Hello Again”,
We missed your article while you
were away and are so glad that you’re
back.
We too, are Christians and are
refreshed by your take on politics.
Thank you for not being politically
correct, but speaking the truth in love.
Mrs. Jean Gottung
Somehow this tale of the little boy
smells of a rotten apple in a barrel.
What lesson can we learn from this? If
you decide to get killed by a drunken
truck driver make sure your family
sues, the truck manufacturer, not the
driver who killed you. It won’t be fair or
honest but will your family really care
if they end up with a million bucks?
Well – we hope to chat with you again
next week. May God bless you and
your family. Remember you do not
have to be ashamed if you believe in
God and your country and are willing
to share your thoughts with others.
Church is a wonderful way to meet
new friends. It is God’s way.

Fred Lee and the Lee Family
We encourage letters to Hello Again.
However, due to space, please limit
your thoughts to 100 words or less. All
letters must be dated and signed. We
reserve the right to refuse any letter we
feel is not in the best interest of this
publication or its readers.
In today’s newspapers, believe it or
not, a jury in Bainbridge, GA, after
deliberating for two hours awarded
the family of a 4-year-old boy $150
million. The boy was a passenger in a
jeep when a car smashed into the rear
of the jeep. The accident caused by
the rear end crash caused a gas leak
and set the jeep on fire, killing the
child. The jury said the death was
caused by the fire, which was the
fault of the Jeep manufacturer —
Fiat-Chrysler Automotive.
What do you think? Was it the fault
of the jeep manufacturer or the driver
of the car that smashed into the jeep in
which the boy was a passenger?
Naturally some law firm’s share of
the award was over $50 million. The
state and federal government get their
cut of the attorney’s income.

The

Whatchamacallit
is
a multi-purpose combination tool,
patented Oct. 9, 1883 by Charles
E.
Marshall
of
Lockport,
NY.
It consists of a short handle that
has a blade cutter and a longer handle that has prongs and a jaw.
It was invented to be a household tool
that had multiple functions — including
a vise, nut-cracker, wrench, pliers, tack
puller, pruner, wire cutter, can opener
and could grasp and move hot objects.
The inner side of the shorter handle
has a curved groove that allows the stud
to catch and slide. A pivotal pin makes
up part of the longer handle. The tool is
able to provide different functions based
on the movement of the handles and the
projections at the end of each lever.
The idea of incorporating several tools into one small portable unit
dates back as far as 70 AD. During
this time there is evidence of ancient
Rome using a folding eating implement that consisted of a three-pronged
fork, spatula, pick, spike and knife.

Tears, memories and hopes for the future
shared at DH Robbins closing ceremony
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin
A sharing of 66 years
worth of memories took
place in a heartfelt closing ceremony at St.
Johnsville’s D.H. Robbins
Elementary School on
July 10.
“I’m sad,” was the
statement voiced by most
everyone at the event.
“I’ll miss everything
about this school,” said
8-year-old Avalon Schoff.
While most students
will now be attending the
Oppenheim-Ephratah
school, Schoff, going into
3rd grade this fall, says
she will be transferring to
Canajoharie.
“I think it’s very sad,”
said Joyce Pollitt. “All of
the kids are heartbroken.” Pollitt says she sees
nothing positive about
the closing.

a professor in college who
said, “Don’t be a 2X4

what was meant by that
was that teachers should
not confine their teaching
to what is between the
two covers of a book and
the four walls of a classroom. “The teachers at
D.H. Robbins, have always adhered to this philosophy. We have worked
together to develop a

One program that Miles
spoke about is the Parents As Reading Partners
(PARP) Program. “We’ve
had 32 PARP Programs
here, even though other
schools have let them go.
It’s really a big event. Lots
of activities, lots of things
going on.”
Miles said the PARP
program will continue in
the OE school and most of
the teachers will moving
to the OE school as well.
A time capsule from
1998 was opened at the
meeting’s end, with mementos, photos, a beanie

Misty Dygert, former
student of the school with
her own child now school

other attendees were

Summer parades
by Melissa Piper Nelson
Within our communi-
ty, summer parades
and celebrations were
a time away from the
busy chores of crop-
ping, haying and livestock shows. A nearby
village, which for most
times of the year, was
a sleepy, quiet place
with a large central
park, transformed itself one day each summer into a bustling,
lively boom town on
parade day.
Complete with high
school bands, service
group floats, dance
teams, baton twirlers,
cheerleaders, horses
and costumed walkers,
the
parade
drew
crowds that overflowed
into the village streets
and beyond. Even sophisticated business
people turned a little
loony on parade day by
spoofing their own
businesses with gags
and crazily-decorated
cars.
On parade day we
did
the
necessary
chores early, cleaned
up and set out for the
village to try and get a
good seat, or place to
stand. Somehow, we
never managed either,
but as kids, we could
generally thread ourselves through the
rows of adults in front
of us to get a good seat
along the sidewalk.
Then for a magical
two hours, we would
watch
the
parade

march past us with all
its dazzling colors and
sounds, listening as
the adults cheered and
hooted
behind
us.
Sometimes we were
lucky enough to grab
some candy or souvenirs flung from the
floats and sometimes
we just had to wait until after the parade to
get a hotdog and soda
in the park.
If for some reason,
you couldn’t attend the
parade yourself, you
expected the designated family member to
relate all the details
with precision. They
had to tell you what
floats were best, what
band played the most
inspiring march, and
how
many
horses
pranced along.
Some families took
the entire parade day
away from their farms
and small town lives to
savor a day away from
work and be together.
We
often
returned
home to a picnic, a
rest in the afternoon
and resumed our farm
chores in the evening.
Even so, parade day
captured the essence
of summer’s different
life rhythm in taking
one day to do something different.
I’m glad many small
and large towns still
take the time to celebrate with summer parades. There is something unique about
people in a community
coming together to celebrate — to take a day
apart from commuting
away and instead gathering together.

published by Krause

Q: I picked up a Hummel figurine at a garage
sale for $50. It is No. 4,
“What’s That?” When was
it made, and how much is
it worth? — Susan, St.
Louis, MO
A: I found your figurine
referenced in “The Official
M.I. Hummel Price Guide”
by Heidi Ann Von Ricklinghausen and published by Krause Books.
According to this guide,
your figurine was issued
in 1997 as an exclusive
preview edition for members of the M.I. Hummel
club. It is valued by Voin
Ricklinghausen in the
$105-$115 range.
Q: This may seem like
an unusual question, but
several weeks ago I purchased a salt and pepper
set at a flea market, and
when I got home, I discovered that I could not unscrew the tops. I don’t
want to use too much
pressure since I could
break one or both. Do you
have any suggestions? —
Susan, Evergreen, CO
A: Try this. Place your
saltshakers upside down
in a small bowl of white
vinegar. Let the set soak
overnight. This should
solve your problem.
Q: I have a doll made
by Mattel and called
“Shopping Sheryl.” I
think I got it for my birthday in about 1970. —
Elizabeth, Naperville, IL
A: Your doll was, indeed, manufactured in
1970 and is valued at
$65. I found it in “200
Years of Dolls” by Dawn
Herlocher and published
by Krause Books.

Q: I have a Teddy bear from about 1910. It is beige
mohair with felt pads and shoe button eyes. It is 20inches in length. — Barbara, Canton, Ohio
A: In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt was on a hunting
trip in Mississippi. When he refused to shoot a bear
cub, newspaper cartoonist Clifford Berryman produced a drawing he entitled “Drawing the Line in Mississippi.” That drawing inspired Morris Michtom,
founder of the Ideal Toy Company, to produce a line of
toy bears that he named “Teddy’s Bears.” That’s how
it all began.
I have contacted several collectors, and they seem to
agree that your bear would sell in the $500 to $750
range. As with most collectibles, condition is paramount.
Q: I have three pieces of Roseville pottery that I received from my aunt a number of years ago. Can you
please help me with how much they are worth? — Patricia, Fiskeville, Rhode Island
A: The same week that I received your letter, I receive several others, including a request from Louis in
Albuquerque, New Mexico, asking about the value of
books and Betty in Peoria, Arizona, who has a rocking
chair and asked for an appraisal by me. Let me answer
all of these requests at one time. As I have often stated in this column, I do not provide appraisals. Occasionally I share values, but they come from other
sources, including reference books and price guides.
If you have something that you think is valuable,
you should have an appraisal done by a certified professional. There are two types of appraisals: verbal,
which is generally less expensive, and written, which
is best for insurance purposes.
Q: My dad is a Vietnam veteran. Recently, he and I
looked through his old duffle bag. Among his uniforms, he has combat boots, a battlefield Bible, some
photographs, a canteen and other assorted items. Are
they worth keeping? — Carl, Rio Rancho, New Mexico
A: Most war memorabilia is collectible. One of the
better price guides is “Warman’s Vietnam War Collectibles” by David Doyle and published by Krause
Books. Incidentally, vintage military combat boots are
extremely popular and some are selling in the $35 to
$50 range.

Creative container
combinations
by Dr. Leonard Perry, Horticulture Professor, University of Vermont
Combining
several
types of flowers in the
same growing container
has been popular in England and Europe for some
time, and has become
quite popular now in this
country as well. Combine
the right plants and they
are easy to maintain, at-
tractive, and perfect for
those with small spaces
or little time to garden.
With so many new
plants to choose from, including perennials and
even tropical plants in
addition to annual flowers, how do you decide?
Chris Schlegel, head
grower for D.S. Cole
Growers in New Hampshire, has some sugges-
tions. She says you
should consider both cultural needs for your
choices, and basic design
principles.
Since your choices will
be in the same container,
make sure they have a
similar tolerance for sun
or shade. Make sure the
moisture and fertility requirements are compatible. Use plants with similar vigor, so that one
strong selection doesn’t
overtake the planter and
grow over less vigorous
ones. Reading the labels
on plants, and asking
professionals at complete
garden stores, can help
answer these questions.
Then consider design.
For container gardens to
have the most impact,
three various plant forms
should be used. There
should be tall plants that
give an upright character
to the planter, mounded
plants to add volume,
and cascading or trailing
plants to visually soften
the edges.
You often see these referred to as “thrillers” for
the upright or unusual
that attract attention
first, “fillers” that add the
mass and fill in, and the
“spillers” that cascade
over the side. Thrillers
are big and bold, often
with
large
leaves.
Thrillers can be plants
with unusual foliage, vibrant colors, or unique
form.
Fillers are often foliage,
filling in or weaving about
the thriller.
Spillers help soften pot
edges and sides, and visually anchor the pot to
the ground. Often they
contrast in color or texture with the other
plants.
You should use a variety of plant textures to
add interest. Texture is
the visual effect created,
usually by size or shapes
of leaves.
Mixed planters can be
either symmetrical and
formal, or asymmetrical
and informal. To be symmetrical, visually divide
the container in half, and
either side should be the
same as the other. To create symmetry, use even
numbers of plants, and
ones that remain discreet
and don’t grow together.
To be most aesthetically pleasing, the plant size
should be one to two
times the height of the
container.
Generally there are four
color schemes you might
consider. Monochromatic
color schemes rely on
various shades of a single
color, such as the yellow
or red combinations described above. Polychromatic combinations are
just the opposite, using a
variety of colors. The
British are famous for
such combinations, often
using 10 or more different flowers and colors in
the same planter.
Analogous schemes use
combinations of colors
that are adjacent to each
other on the color wheel,
such as red and orange
or blue and purple. Keep
in mind that warm colors
(red,
orange,
yellow)
catch your attention and
are seen from a distance,
while the cool colors
(green, blue, purple) are
more
soothing
and
should be seen at closer
range.
Complimentary color
schemes make use of colors that are opposite each
other on the color wheel.
One last color effect is
to contrast, or “echo”, one
color in a leaf for instance
with another plant.
Persian Shield, the
mint-leaf, and the silver
licorice plant are exam-
ples of silver foliage being
used to act as a neutral
color, and to bring out
other colors in combinations. White flowers also
can be used effectively to
separate
colors
that
might otherwise clash.
Don’t forget to consider
herbs and vegetables in
your combinations, either
with flowers or by themselves. A colorful stake
with tomatoes or beans in
the center of a large pot
might be surrounded
with carrots as filler, and
flowers as spillers. Or
just surround them with
beans to fill and spill.
Consider colorful Swiss
chard, or red-leaved lettuces, mixed in with flowers. There are quite a few
ornamental and colorful
peppers that blend well in
container combinations.
Wherever you go, watch
for good design combinations and make note of
them and the plants. You
may want to hold plants
next to each other when
shopping in spring to
gauge the effect. Don’t be
afraid to just start combining plants. You’ll soon
learn which you like and
which work together better. The possibilities are
almost infinite!

Food safety tips when grilling
July is National Grilling
Month and a great time to
remind consumers that
between 60 and 70 percent of foodborne illnesses occur with homecooked food. Grilling outdoors presents special
food safety challenges,
and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and
Consumer
Services
(VDACS)
encourages
backyard chefs to brush
up on the basics of safe
grilling for summertime
outdoor cooking.
The same food safety
concepts that apply in
the kitchen apply outdoors: cleanliness, thorough cooking, proper
temperature control and
separation of raw and
cooked foods to prevent
cross-contamination.
Even without running
water, refrigeration or a
stove, grillers can take
many measures to keep
their food safe.
Cleanliness:
Everything that comes in contact with food needs to be
as clean as possible, including dishes, hands,
cutting boards and utensils. Hands are the number one vehicle for contamination and people
should always wash them
for at least 20 seconds
with soap and warm water before preparing food
and during preparation if
you handle raw meat, fish
or eggs. Hand sanitizers
aren’t the perfect replacement for thorough hand
washing, but they are the
next best choice if running water is not available.
Thorough
Cooking:
The cooking process is an
important element in food
safety. Cooking’s main
function is to kill diseasecausing
micro-organisms. To do this effectively, grillers should cook
until the internal temperature reaches the recommended level as shown
on a food thermometer.
See a safe food temperature chart at vdacs.virginia.gov/foodsafety/safe
tytips.shtml . This is particularly important when
grilling since charcoal or
wood grills can cook unevenly.
Meat, poultry, fish, egg
dishes and casseroles
should be cooked thoroughly in one operation.
When preparing food to
take on the road, do not
start the cooking process,
interrupt it and plan to
complete the cooking
process later at the picnic
site or stadium. Cook
food thoroughly and then
reheat it, or cook raw
foods on the grill or over
the campfire to the proper temperature.
Proper Temperature
Control: Bacteria tend to
grow well in the temperature danger zone between
40 degrees Fahrenheit
and 140 degrees Fahrenheit so to keep foods safe
and good to eat, maintain
cold foods below 40 degrees F and hot foods
above 140 degrees F.
When serving food, keep
the two-hour rule in
mind: Don’t leave perishable foods at room temperature for more than
two hours. In warmer
weather and when outdoors, reduce the amount
of time the food is not refrigerated to no more
than an hour.
Separation of Raw and
Cooked Foods: Don’t
cross-contaminate. Keep
raw meat, poultry, fish
and their juices away
from other food, even if it
means using two coolers.
Separation prevents bacteria on raw food from
contaminating
cooked
foods. After cutting raw
meats, wash cutting
boards, utensils and surfaces with hot soapy water if possible. If not, use
one cutting board or
sheet for meats and poultry and another for items
that won’t be cooked (salad greens, raw vegetables, fruits). Prep your
fresh produce under running, potable water in the
kitchen before packing
for the grilling site, and
resist the temptation to
sample uncooked mixes
which contain raw or partially cooked seafood or
eggs.
Remember to make
food safety an essential
ingredient every time you
shop, prepare, cook or
store food and take extra
precautions when eating
outdoors. Find additional
food safety information,

Keeping Your Food Safe,

section

Kitchen Diva: Just peachy
by Angela Shelf Medearis
Peaches are the perfect
summer
fruit.
When
they’re ripe, they are the
sweet taste of summer,
whether eaten out of hand
or in your favorite dessert.
There are two types of
peaches: Early peaches
are clingstone (woody
center pit adheres to
flesh), and mid-summer
peaches are freestone
(woody pit falls out easily
when fruit is cut in half).
Clingstone peaches are
firmer and better for canning, grilling or adding to
savory cooked dishes.
Freestone peaches are
softer, juicer and more
flavorful. Best of all,
MAIL L
L
A
C
OR
peaches are a good
source of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, niacin
and soluble fiber. Peaches also are considered a
diuretic and a mild laxative.
Peaches spoil very easily,
even when unripe. Choose
fragrant peaches that are
unblemished and not too
hard — they should yield
slightly to the pressure of a
thumb. Avoid peaches
with green coloring, as
they were probably picked
too early. They’re not as
sweet and won’t ripen
properly. Peaches don’t get
sweeter after they’re harvested, though fruit will
become softer and juicer

as it matures.
Look for skins that
show background color of
yellow or cream — the
amount of red or pink
“blush” on the fruit depends on variety and is
not a reliable indicator of
ripeness. Watch out for
dark colored, mushy,
bruised peaches that are
overripe and beginning to
spoil. Tan circles or spots
on the skin are early
signs of decay.
Don’t pack peaches too
closely, or they’ll spoil
and cause nearby peaches to rot. Unripe peaches
can be left to ripen at
room temperature. This
process can be hastened
by placing them in a paper bag for a few days.
Peaches taste best at
room temperature and
will keep for 3-4 days,
slightly longer in the refrigerator. Wash the fruit
just before eating.
Peaches peel more easily if blanched for 1
minute, then cooled immediately in ice-cold water to stop the effect of
the heat ... do not soak.
The flesh of the peach
tends to brown on contact with air. To prevent
this, eat or cook the
peach immediately, or
sprinkle it with lemon or
orange juice, or an ascorbic acid product.
Freezing: Select fully
ripe fruit. Peel, pit and
slice. Treat to prevent
darkening. Sugar pack:
sprinkle fruit with desired amount of sugar;
gently stir; allow fruit to
stand until sugar dissolves; pack fruit into
freezer container leaving
1/2-inch headspace.
Syrup pack: Prepare a
light, medium or heavy
syrup of your choice. Add
1/2 cup syrup to freezer
container; add sliced fruit
and gently shake to pack
fruit, leaving 1/2-inch
headspace.
Dehydrating: Remove
skin and pits. Cut into
1/2-inch slices or circles.
Treat to prevent darkening. Dry at 130 F until
pliable with no moisture.
Drying concentrates the
nutrients; dried peaches
are especially rich in
potassium and iron.

A/C service: keep your car cool when things heat up
Sitting in traffic when
temperatures soar without a properly functioning air conditioning (A/C)
system is the last place
most drivers want to be.
To help avoid this uncomfortable situation, the
non-profit
Car
Care
Council recommends that
motorists be car care
aware and have their A/C
system checked annually
to make sure it is working
at peak performance
when they need it most.
A vehicle’s heating,
ventilating and air condi-
tioning system (HVAC)
keeps the interior cabin
comfortable in any season by providing the right
temperature and humidity level. Typical A/C service consists of the following steps:
• Service technician vi-
sually inspects hoses,
lines, seals and other
components for leaks as
well as inspect the drive
belt for cracks or damage.
• Technician checks
pressures to test operation, refrigerant charge
and outlet temperatures.
• If the system is found
to be low on refrigerant, a
leak test is performed to
find the source of the
leak. Keep in mind that if
your vehicle is leaking refrigerant, it is damaging
the ozone layer.
• Refrigerant may be
added if necessary to “top
off” the system, although
some states do not allow
“topping off.”
• A technician may also
check for evidence of refrigerant cross-contamination, which is the mixing of refrigerants.
• A/C service should
also include a check of
the compressor’s drive
belt and tension.
The Car Care Council
also recommends that
when having a vehicle’s
HVAC system inspected,
the cabin air filter be
checked to make sure air
is flowing properly into
the car.
“Making sure your A/C
system is working properly will keep you cool
and safe when you hit the
road this summer,” said
Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.
The Car Care Council is
the source of information
for the “Be Car Care
Aware” consumer education campaign promoting
the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance
and repair to consumers.

Car Care Guide or for
