December 2014 Together is the Best Place to Be No doubt we all felt invigorated by the crowds and happy chatter that surrounded us last Friday night as we gathered for our annual Christmas Party in the Gallery. It was a night of Plenty; plenty of great people, delicious food, laughter, appreciation, and good times! As always, the night featured our customary Christmas Auction fundraiser, which is, thanks to our seasoned, hardworking Auctioneer Helen Harris and you all, and your witty comments and participation, the funniest entertainment we get to experience at ADSO during the whole year. While Helen kept up with your bids and comments, and Sandy, with the books, Sandra was making the rounds keeping your glasses full. Since as we all know, Sandra is known to be the “idea man,” it did not surprise me when she came up with an ex tempore can-can dance, to be offered for bids. She did find her “volunteers;” the ladies did not wear costumes with long skirts, petticoats, and black stockings, but based on the cheers, the dance qualified! Thanks to Helen and Pam for being such great sports! Anything for ADSO, right!? It was a night to remember! A big thanks to everyone for their donations for the auction and the buffet, and thank you for your generous bids! A look at our annual financial report tells me that a lot of people have done a lot of great things for ADSO. Our fiscal year ended at the end of November. We are solid, running strong and growing! My sincere thanks and appreciation go out to all our artists and members, weekly instructors and workshop instructors, group leaders, the students, our volunteers, officials and chairmen, Sandy, the visitors and participants, our sponsors Aurum Jewelry, The City of Ft. Walton Beach, Cox Communications, Eglin Federal Credit Union, Inspirational Product Group, Life’s a Beach Publications, and The Northwest Florida Fair Association, all area publications, Austin Movers, and Okaloosa County School Board. You are the reason! As we soon close out the year I will leave you with thoughts of bliss, appreciation and thankfulness. Through the work we do at ADSO as we live up to our mission statement “to facilitate fine art exhibitions, conduct art classes to enhance the appreciation of the visual arts, and to further educate fledgling and established artists,” we touch and enrich each other’s lives and that of our community. Success may take many shapes and forms; in my heart I know what it looks and feels like. I hope you can feel it, too. Merry Christmas! Hanna Gallery News - Pat Roberts Ooops! Pardon us! He was serving as CEO of Northwest Florida Fair and as Fort Walton Beach City Council at the time of his death. He will be greatly missed. Welcome to our new Board Members! ADSO's 2015 Board includes five new members, Risa Farnsworth, Pam Folse, Theresia McGinnis, Vonnie Peters, and Mike Radford. All are already active in ADSO activities, and we are glad to welcome them in their new positions! Risa Farnsworth: My name is Risa Farnsworth, and I am very pleased to serve as ADSO’s Email Chairperson. I am a Homemaker to 3 great kids and wife of 20 years to my loving husband. I have been a member of ADSO for just a few years and enjoy working with acrylics and collage. I am grateful to be a part of a positive, productive, and growing group of artists. Pam Folse: I was born in New Orleans, and lived in Pensacola prior to moving to Fort Walton Beach. I've been painting for 20 years. My favorite medium is oil, and I enjoy taking workshops and being part of ADSO! Theresia McGinnis: I’ve lived in Niceville with my husband since 1974, long enough to claim to be a Florida Native! Retired from a career with Okaloosa County Schools, I help my husband at Coastal Brick, our family business, in Niceville. I have dabbled in several mediums but prefer watercolor. I’m looking forward to serving as Workshop Chairman. You can help me in my job by letting me know what kinds of workshops in which you would like to participate here at ADSO. Vonnie Peters: I have been a member of ADSO for four years. I work in acrylic wash on paper and have been painting for 25 years. I also enjoy pottery on Wednesdays. Mike Radford: I came to Fort Walton Beach while on active duty with the Air Force, and we've been here ever since. My wife and I now live in Destin, and my daughters are seniors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I've always been interested in art, but work and family obligations pushed it to the back burner until now. I'm really enjoying getting involved in art again through ADSO and welcome the opportunity to serve on the board. Preview of January Luncheon: January 28, 2015 Scientific illustrator Corina Zalace will be the speaker at the ADSO Luncheon on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Zalace will describe how she became a scientific illustrator and some of the techniques and tools used in scientific illustration, as well as how this career led her to work in other areas associated with the fine arts. Zalace will give her talk at the Art Center Gallery, 17 First Street, Fort Walton Beach. The Luncheon, which is open to the public, will begin at 11:30. Cost of the luncheon is $12. New Policy Regarding Retrieval of Work After Shows We have encountered a series of problems with unclaimed art work being left at ADSO. Because of the limited space for storage, as of January 2014, any works not collected from the special shows (Beaux Arts, Fair Show, SE Regional) and all ADSO shows, on the designated dates, will incur a storage fee of $10. This fee will be collected for works held one day to two weeks after the show closing. ADSO will not be responsible or liable for any damage to those works during that time. After two weeks, unclaimed works will become the property of ADSO. Exceptions can be made for special requests made in advance. Don’t forget to check out ADSO on Facebook and Twitter Arts & Design Society of FWB @ADSO_FWB The Photography Club will meet on Wednesday, December 17, at 7 pm.
