EX CELLENCE
This academy has grown rapidly from a challenging
starting point to a position of real depth and
consistency with young people realising that every one of them has a potential
worth pursuing regardless of background or disadvantage.
FRIENDSHIP
Community Academy. This new coeducational
academy is building towards becoming Outstanding
in every area in order to maximize the educational
experience and achievement of each student. We
underpin all we do with a belief in three values: Respect, Friendship and Excellence. You will discover
this ethos in every corridor and classroom as students
pursue their potential with vigour.
In order to best serve the students at BCA we have a number of key aims which we
are all working towards.

OFSTED were complimentary during their inspection in February 2013 stating:
Much of the teaching is good and some is outstanding
Students whose circumstances may make them vulnerable are helped to overcome their
difficulties by the support provided by other adults
The genial but constant staff presence in corridors encourages a warm and cooperative
atmosphere
The conditions for teaching and learning are good and little time is wasted
There is no complacency

Students are grouped in vertical tutor groups within vertical communities: that is,
they are with other students, who are different ages, for 20 minutes at the end of
each day. Creating time for students to be with older and younger students each
day helps to develop each of the qualities and characteristics shown below as they
practice empathy and consideration. Yr 7-9 students are taught together in all
lessons as this is the best way to ensure that students are taught at a pace and level
of challenge that suits their abilities, skills and interests. This structure is having a
clear impact upon the quality of the lessons that staff are able to plan as well as the
learning experience of the students.

There is a consistently applied and a regular system for providing feedback to
students, who are expected to respond to the advice and comments the teacher
makes. Students say that this dialogue is helping them to know how to improve.

The new pastoral system, with mixed age tutor groups and communities based on
the themes of respect, friendship and excellence, and a regular focus in assemblies
on celebrating success and valuing effort are both helping to raise self-esteem.

Friday afternoons are organised differently: Project Phoenix is an enrichment
programme for all students to opt into their chosen activity. The range of options,
led by both staff and other adults who work in partnership with us, ensures that all
students can find something to suit their preferences. The Project Phoenix options
can be seen on the academy website.
Extended
Learning
EX CELLENCE
Students are given the opportunity to remain within the academy beyond the school
day in order to spend further time developing their understanding within any of
the subject areas. This extended learning provision is a feature of the academy
which we prioritise highly as for some students this can be when some of their best
progress is made.
l
Aspirations are rising and there is a tangible sense of optimism and purpose.

An outstanding experience for every

Welcome to the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF).
I have been the Executive Principal of the CLF
since September 2007 having been Principal at
John Cabot CTC and John Cabot Academy since
2004. Our partnership is sponsored by Rolls Royce
PLC and University of West England (UWE) Our
federation consists of 11 Academies in Bristol, Bath
and Weston super Mare. John Cabot Academy &
Bristol Brunel Academy opened in 2007, whilst
Bristol Metropolitan Academy joined two years
later. In 2011 we added two more academies to
our family when Hans Price Academy in Weston
and King’s Oak Academy in Kingswood, Bristol joined us. In September 2012 our
family continued to grow with five new arrivals. Bath Community Academy joined
as our sixth secondary academy and four primary schools in Bristol meant that
for the first time we educated students from the ages of 3-19. Our new primary
academy partners are Begbrook Primary, Minerva Primary, Frome Vale Academy
and Summerhill Academy. In September 2013, Wallscourt Farm Academy will
open in Cheswick Village with 60 reception students.

In the federation we believe that students come first and that every child can find
a route to happiness, prosperity and success. The federation was created to enable
staff to work more closely together to deliver the best education possible for the
students who attend our academies. We are proud of the improvements we have
seen in exam results and every academy that has been inspected by OFSTED since
they joined the federation is now either good or outstanding. More of our students
than ever before now have qualifications that stand comparison with other young
people in the city and across the south west. This has enabled us to develop a
federation VI Form with more students than before staying in full time education
after their GCSE courses have finished.
In 2011 the CLF became a teaching school. We see this being the vehicle for training
our own teachers and sharing more strategies and ideas to raise the quality of
education for the children in our Academies. Our vision is simple: we believe that
by working together rather than in isolation we can accelerate our Academies to
be outstanding schools. In doing so, together we create more opportunities for the
lifelong success for our students as they become young adults.
