Poetry
Viaduct Ice Chorus
The Alaskan Way Viaduct sings a roaring in our ears,
her hoary freight bears down—rebarred and quaking
to crush—we stop our ears at stria screeching to break
something.
Sing a glacial aria. Picture her—she once rode
a surfboard ice floe ripping through solid water slipping
the firn, making breccia wakes, scraping
all matter of chattermarks.
Harmonize a glacier-blue blush—she was whole mother of forward
surge for half an eon, could not be stopped,
shadowed the glacier that swept this same Sound.
Now we cannot hoist her out of her chair.
Aphasia—she forgets the second verse.
Words freeze midbrain, coda becomes hum. She falls
in a crevasse, off-ramps sequestering carbon—so much
concrete we recant, we can’t watch icebergs calving fast ice.
She slows—cowers shifts direction like a white wind rose,
her petals shrivel in frazil.
She lies—this is not the full story.
Her tongue muddles in slush. Albedo lost, all reflection dulls.
Once their song clamored.
Now 99, glacier dwindle in cirques, caught in arête,
retreat since the last ice age, since the last
carbon storm.

Janet Norman Knox is a poet/playwright/performance artist who
bikes via the viaduct twice a day and shudders beneath its mass.

work, Vanduine says, “My artwork

Called “one of the best painters the

San Juan Island artist Joe Miller

Heritage Museum’s annual Nordic
Christmas celebration. Vendors sell
hand-crafted wares and traditional
Scandinavian Christmas food and
drinks are sold. There is music, dancing,
a visit from Santa, a raffle, and a silent
auction. Yulefest is a 38-year strong
tradition in Ballard; this year’s is to be
bigger and better than ever!
Skål! Scandinavian Spirits
Denmark, Norway, and Sweden
share a “spirited” tradition of enjoying
beer and aquavit. Explore the cultural
history of these beverages, following
traditions to Scandinavian-American
communities, and find answers to
“What is aquavit?” and “How do you
pronounce ‘skål’?” Fun, informative,
engaging, this exhibition travels across
the U.S. between 2015 and 2017.

The Shape of Things to Come
In this new work, Judith Kindler’s
typical narrative style is present,
but here the focus lies within the
parameters of shapes. Pulling from
memories of simple shapes pervasive
throughout her youth, Kindler gives
a soul to these forms by inserting
figurative abstractions in these complex
mixed-media works. November 3-28.
San Francisco-based ceramicist
Erika Sanada sculpts zoomorphic
figures that play with the boundary
of reality and fantasy. Her surreal
works play out narratives that
express the artist’s social perspective;
exploring themes of childhood anxiety,
acceptance, and assimilation. This
exhibit also features new works from
ceramic artist Calvin Ma. This is
Sanada’s first ever Northwest show.

Voyager resin series portrays a single
figure traveling through the vastness
of a primordial oceanic space. The
figure is small, isolated in a large,
quiet expanse, infiltrated by occasional
rays of sunshine. Zener continues his
exploration of water as a metaphor for
renewal and reprise. October 1-24.

Andre Petterson displays mixed
media paintings on panel. Coalescence
of photography and painting allows
Petterson the opportunity to capture a
split second while incorporating paint
into the work provides a fluidity which
enlivens the photographic image. This
new show focuses on vintage typewriters
and bicycles strewn with ribbons, wire,
and painted fabrics. November 5-21.

“I am an artist. I paint to bring out
an emotion that’s ever changing, and
the process is complete when viewers
connect to my artwork. Art is about
sharing, bringing people closer to
‘something’ just out of reach, like a
