In the early sixties the club left the Hills competitio n to join the Glenelg, South and West League. To avoid clashing wit h Glandore the Vikings made the adjustment to black and gold, the colours, we as a club now call our own. The Vikings won premierships at the top le vel in both 1970 and 1974 under the captaincy of Wayne Baxter, but these were in the third divisio n of the league. The Happy Valley/Aberfoyle Park area was mostly vineyards or sheep paddocks at this time. We held an insignificant power until the eightie s when we joined the Southern League. We were accepted in Division 11 and made the Grand Final in our first season, playing regular finals football until 1984 when we moved to Divisio n 1. The mid eighties in Division1 saw the Vikings on the end of some big thrashings. At that moment, the mood changed and a lo t of people , too many to mentio n, decided to change the cult ure of the football club. Some important and bold decisio ns were made that turned our reputation as one of the easy teams in the competitio n, into one of the most feared and respected clubs in the SFL. We threatened to make the finals in 1990 and eventually got there in 1991, as well as winning premierships in 1992,1993,1995,1996,1998 and 1999. A couple of years passed when we wait ed for our juniors to become men and we won an A Grade premiership in 2003. From then we never missed a finals series and in 2012 our A Grade won another premiership against Brighton. Many relate our success to the development of the area, neighbouring one of the biggest High School’s in the state, but to be the best requires more than numbers. You also need the best coaches, the best trainers, the best support staff and the best administratio n. We have been very fortunate to have had an exceptio nal qualit y of personnel involved at all levels of our club. Our forefathers have left a legacy we can all be proud of and we can all walk talle r on the back of their success. Our standards are high, our expectatio ns are high, and the rewards so far have been worth the effort. Lets continue the legacy and club success in 2016 and beyond. Last year was another successful year for the Club having 4 out of the 5 Saturday teams in the finals and 2 out of the 3 Sunday teams in finals. This is a tremendous achie vement for the Club and highlights the continued strength of our Club. After a search for an A grade coach four weeks into the 2015 season, Steve Wallace was appointed. Steve did a great job for the remainder of the season and brought a sense of respect from the players to those who give up their time to ensure the Club runs smoothly which is sometimes forgotten. I would like to thank all the coaches, coordinators, support staff and parents from Sub Juniors to Senior’s who made 2015 a successful year. I would like to thank in partic ular the management committee and executive for 2015. Talking to other Club Presidents across the SFL I am lucky to have this team, the professionalism and value that these people portray cannot be under estimated. A big thank you also to my wife Heather, she doesn’t get involved in a direct way at the Club but is a great sounding board for me when I have decisions to make or a bad day at the football. We cannot afford to become complacent, we have fantastic facilit ies, good junior program, developing senio r group and great committee but we need to alw ays be looking for opportunities for improvement. Continuous improvement and succession planning should be paramount in our thinking and every decisio n we make. We should ask ourselves is this decisio n helping H.V.F.C. to be the best club in the Southern Football League. Finally I would like to welcome past premiership player Ben Cole man back to the Club and congratulate him on his selectio n as Club/A grade Coach for season 2016. Steve Maguire HVFC President 0408 820 241 8 HVFC CODE OF CONDUCT RESPECT • It is a privilege to play at Happy Valley Football Club. This privilege comes with a series of responsibilities and expectations that go with being a Happy Valley Football Club player. • Remember at all times you are a member of the Happy Valley Football Club. Accept this responsibility and conduct yourself at all times in a manner that brings credit to yourself and the Club. RACIAL VILIFICATION POLICY The Happy Valley Football Club prides itself in providing a safe and welcoming environment for any person to enjoy football either as a participant or a spectator. The club has a zero tolerance regarding any conduct which may be perceived as racial in anyway. SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY Any information HVFC members need is on the HVFC website (www.hvfc.com.au) or Facebook and Twitter pages or can be obtained by contacting committee members or respective coaches. Social media pages, Facebook and Twitter are primarily used to contact members and supporters. HVFC sponsors and members of the public also follow these pages, therefore it is important that no offensive language or material posted to the pages that tarnishes the reputation of the HVFC. Any breaches to this policy will not be tolerated. TRAINING • Regular season training for Sub Juniors is scheduled for Friday nights at Happy Valley Football Club, Taylors Road Aberfoyle Park. Sub Juniors train from 5:30 pm-6:30pm (Under 8’s), 6.00pm-7.00pm (Under 10’s) and 6:15pm-7.30pm (Under 12’s). • Any changes t o these arrangements will be communicat ed t o players by t heir respect ive coaches. HVFC MATCH DAY STANDARDS • All players are required to report to the match venue at the nominated report time given by the respective coach or notify their coach if they are unable to play prior to the commencement of the game. • All players are expected to wear mouth guards to training and games. 9 HVFC CODE OF CONDUCT HVFC MATCH DAY DUTIES (Volunteers are required to assist) • Runner-(not required for Under 8s) must be wearing closed in shoes, preferably runners (thongs or bare feet will not be accepted) and a HVFC runner top and shorts (found in the Guernsey bag of each team). • Goal Umpire-must be wearing a white goal umpire jacket (found in the Guernsey bag of each team) and must be noting the scores for both teams and confer with the other Goal Umpire at each break. It is also required that the white flags (found in the Guernsey bag of each team) are used when there is a score at each end. • Timekeeper-is required for home games only. The Timekeeper is in charge of the clock, which is set to a specific time depending on the grade playing. The timekeeper is also in charge of blowing the siren to signal the start and finish of each quarter. • Game Day Co-ordinator-is the point of contact between the two sides on the day for any issues. The Co-ordinator is the only person allowed to approach umpires regarding any issues arising during the game. They must ensure that coaching staff, players and supporters are adhering to code of conduct. At home games they ensure that ovals are set up as per rules for Under 8’s, 10’s and 12’s. This includes time keepers box, siren and change rooms being open for players and umpires. They ensure that sign off of ground check form is completed by both team’s co-ordinators if the ground is suitable for play, any hazards or issues are to be noted on the form. Carbon copy kept in book. They liaise with other team’s co-ordinator to ensure that they are happy with set up and ready to commence play at allocated times. They deal with any field issues from parents during the day and take notes where appropriate ie: player behaviour, incidents. They ensure both sides have a trainer available for any potential injuries - trainers must be visible in white uniform. The Game Day Co-ordinator must wear a high vis vest as supplied by SFL. Ensure both teams have co-ordinator. Any incidents to be noted and advised to SubJunior Co-ordinator and Club Secretary. • Team manager-each team requires a team manager to assist the coach and their players and to co-ordinate volunteers on game days. • Canteen– Every team needs to provide two adults to assist in the canteen on game days. • Guernsey Washing-Each team requires a volunteer each week to wash the guernseys. IMPORTANT DATES First game—May 1 Fees due—May 28. If fees are not finalised or you have made no arrangements with the Treasurer or his representative by this day then your child will not be selected to play. Carnivals– at the end of the home and away season, the SFL runs a carnival for each grade. The Under 8 carnival will be held on July 31 The Under 10 carniv al will be held on August 7 The Under 12 carniv al will be held on August 14 13 SFL CODE OF CONDUCT PLAYERS:• • • • • • • • • • • • Play by the rule s Never argue wit h an official or umpire. If you disagree with an umpires decision have your coach or team manager approach the offic ial during a break or after the match. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in any sport. Work equally hard for yourself and/or for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you. Be a good sport. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere wit h, bully or take unfair advantage of another player. Cooperate with your coach, team-mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competit ion. Play for the “FUN OF IT” and not just to please parents and coaches. Avoid the use of derogatory language based on gender, race etc. Remember that undue and/or unnecessary breaches of the above may see you sent from the ground or reported. This will not only reflect on you but also your team and may put your team at a disadvantage and may result in you being disciplined and/or suspended. 14 SFL CODE OF CONDUCT COACHES:• • • • • • • • • • • Never ridic ule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. Teach your players to play by the rules. Be reasonable in your demands on young player’s time energy and enthusiasm. Avoid overplaying the talented players. All players need and deserve equal time. Ensure that equipment and facilit ie s meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and abilit y of the players. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents and for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches. Follow the advic e of a physic ian when determining when an injured player is ready to recommence training or competit ion. Remember that children need a coach they can respect. Be generous with your praise when it is deserved, and set a good example. Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed on sound coaching practic es and the principals of growth develo pment of children. SPECTATORS:• • • • • • • • • • • Remember children play sport for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators nor are they miniature professionals. Applaud good performance and efforts from each team. Congratulate all partic ipants upon their performance regardless of the games outcomes. Respect the offic ial’s decision. If there is a disagreement, follo w the appropriate procedure in order to questio n the decisio n and teach the children to do likewise. Never ridic ule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competit ion. Use posit ive comments to encourage players - they are motiv ational. Condemn the use of viole nce in any form, be it by spectator, coaches, officials or players. Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game. Encourage players to follow the rules and the official’s decisio ns. Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials. Avoid the use of derogatory language based on gender or race. 15 16 17 SFL CODE OF CONDUCT PARENTS:• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 18 Encourage children to partic ipate, if they are interested. If a child is unwilling, do not force him or her. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. Turn defeat into victory by helping your child work towards skill improvement and good sportsmanship. Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. Encourage children to alw ays partic ipate according to the rules. Never ridic ule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. Remember children are involved in an organised sport for their enjoyment, not yours. Remember that children learn best from example , applaud good play by all teams. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the official’s judgment and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activ itie s Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activit ies for the children and deserve your support. Avoid the use of derogatory language based on gender/race etc. Please remember that as parents, you play a huge role in supporting your children to play football at a club. If you have any queries or issues to raise at all please do so eit her through your team manager or the executive of your club. TRAINERS INFORMATION As we prepare for the football season, every player should be asking themselv es, How can I beat my opponent? Well, if all things are equal, the only advantage you may have over your opponent is the way you recover from your last match and the way you prepare for your next match. Includes: • Ice down for up to 48 hours after the match (10-15mins on 60 mins off). • Low level exercise the day after your match (this will remove waste product from your system and allow you to train at a higher level during the week). • Low alcohol intake follo wing your match (alcohol can aggravate soft tissue injuries result ing in increased bruising and swelling). Post game nutrition • A meal based on ric e should be eaten within 2 hours of comple ting your exercise. • Rehydration (fluid replacement) should be at the rate of 1 litre per kilo lost during exercise). Preparation (up to 3 days prior to event): • • Increase carbohydrate lo ading (rice, steamed chicken, pasta, lean meats). Drink plenty of fluids. Event day: • • • • Your stomach should be empty by the time you compete. Meals should be high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat and protein (ric e based, pancakes, fruit muesli, bananas, canned spaghetti). Meal should be light but satisfying. Drink plenty of fluids (no carbonated drinks). 19 TRAINERS INFORMATION UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE CLUB MEDICAL STAFF, PLAYERS ARE REQUESTED TO OBSERVE: • Any hygiene requirements e.g. use of water bottle s . • Any nutritio nal requirements e.g. drinking of fluids before, during or after activit y. • Treatment of injurie s shall be on a needs basis, both during games and at training. • Players requiring treatment but not training will be seen after training has commenced. • No player will receiv e ad hoc treatment on game day. • Serious injurie s will command immediate response ahead of other needs. • Maximum of 3 players should be in the medical room at all times. • In the event that an injury or emergency occurs during planned club activ itie s, permission is granted to the club’s medic al staff to provide the player with necessary treatment to return to active partic ipation. • Permission is also granted to send a player to an emergency hospit al or clinic if deemed necessary or advisable . • In the absence of players parents (under age) or guardian, players will be treated as necessary by the medic al staff. • All players shall complete a medic al information sheet. • Any directio n from medic al professio nals (doctor, physio etc) will not be overridden by medical staff. • Players must inform the medical staff of any special medic al condit ion that you may have had, or currently have e.g. asthma, diabetes, epile psy etc. HEAD INJURY POLICY The sports medic ine staff shall assess a player suffering a head injury. If the player is assessed as having any degree of concussion, the player will not be allo wed to resume playing that day. The player shall not be allowed to resume training or commence playing again until a written medical cle arance from a doctor has been receiv ed by the Club’s sports medic ine staff. This policy has been developed using the guidelines of the booklet ‘The Management of Concussion in Australian Football’, published by the AFL Medical Officers Association 2008. 20 HEAT POLICY The Happy Valle y Football Club Hot Weather Polic y has been adapted from the SANFL Hot Weather Policy and will assist volunteers, players, officials and spectators to undertake necessary actio n in cases of extreme hot weather. This is to prevent injury, and possible death, from heat illness by recognizing and managing potentially dangerous heat sit uations. The Happy Valle y Football Club recognizes that the risk of an elevated body temperature from high intensit y sport in a hot environment is significant, and can lead to heat illness presented as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Happy Valley Football Club also recognizes that children are at a higher risk than adults. Symptoms can be worse if fluid replacement during exercise is inadequate whic h leads to fluid lo ss and dehydration. Training/Competitions in Hot W eather—The Happy Valley Football Club Head Trainer or person acting in this capacit y where the Head Trainer is not available shall check the Southern Suburbs( Noarlunga) forecast temperature at 6pm the day before the event on the Australian Bureau of Meteorolo gy website - www.bom.gov.au . Based on the forecast temperature, the follo wing actio n will be taken regarding the event: Ambient Temperture Risk of Heat Illness Recommended Management for sports activities 26 - 30 Moderate All Grades Time interval between available drinks no more than15 minutes, with a break sufficient for all players to replenish fluids. Overall duration of session to be 60-90 minutes. High - very high Seniors: Time interval between available drinks no more than 15 minutes, with a break sufficient for all players to replenish fluids. Activity in tensity to be reduced to moderate pace with breaks in intensity Overall duration of session to be 60-90 minutes Juniors: Outdoor activities modified with reduction in in tensity and increased drink break sufficient for players to replenish fluids. Interval between breaks no more than 10 minutes with use of shade as much as possible. Overall duration of session limited to 60 minutes. Sub Junior: All activities cancelled Extreme Seniors: No outdoor activities to be conducted between 10am and 4pm. Water based activities or activities in air conditioned indoor facilities may be conducted but must be modified to prevent heat stress. Modified outside activity only in consultation with Head Trainer . All Junior and Sub Junior training cancelled 31 - 35 36 and above 21 HEAT POLICY Where there has been a change in the Southern Suburbs( Noarlunga) temperature after 6pm the evening before the training or game, the trainer on duty shall refer back to the above chart to advise coaches and officials on the activit y and intensit y of such that can be conducted after the trainer on duty has taken the temperature prio r to the activit y commencing. Use of a smartphone is reasonable to determine the locality temperature. Players and officials shall be encouraged to drink fluid prio r to and during all competit ions and training sessions to avoid dehydration, and for rehydration following competit ions and training sessions. In all competit ions and training sessions the Happy Valley Football Club shall ensure that there is an adequate supply of water for drinking and refreshment, and the appropriate drinks breaks are taken as necessary during theses competit ions or training sessio ns. Players and officials wit h any symptoms of heat illness shall immediately cease exercising. They shall have immediate first aid treatment including Strip/Soak/Fan (strip off any excess clothing and rest in a shaded area, soak or spray with water and rehydrate, and fan) to reduce body temperature as quickly as possible. This person shall immediately be referred for treatment by a medic al professio nal. The commitment volunteers make in terms of their time is substantial. Volunteers are vit al to the successful running of HVFC. Clubs rely on volunteers to take an active interest in the future of their organisation and their specific roles wit hin it. As a part of the HVFC community it is required that each member is to donate a few hours of their time over the course of the season. This time can be utilized in the following ways: How can you help? On the Field: • Goal umpires, • Boundary umpires • Water runners • Become a trainer • Time keeper • Set up and cleaning of the grounds before & after a home game • Scoreboard attendants Off the field: • Wash guernseys • Help in the canteen • Help in the BBQ • Help on the gate on game days • Assisting in oval set up and cle an up for social events • Join the committee A volunteer roster will be giv en to each player and it is an expectatio n that this is adhered to - club hour penaltie s will apply if players do not attend.
