I am lucky enough to have peaches, pears, blackberries and a couple of varieties of apples all within picking distance of my back door and we are all lucky to find food fresh from the ground, tree or bush all around us. In this issue we take a tour of local farm stands, courtesy of Patty Lyn Tweten, all of them within a few minutes drive. In these times of GMO food, pesticides and other pollution, we can count ourselves lucky that we live in a relatively clean and un-polluted region of the country with easy access to fresh, clean, organic food, water and air, but we've got to work to keep it that way, and support those companies and organizations that do. Our local bon vivant Chuck Lucas takes us to more wonderful out of the way food establishments, this time focusing on the fresh seafood out in Bodega Bay and a couple of the families that catch and share it with us. As our new title says, it's worth the trip. Sips, Savors & Sounds — Page 10 We have a new voice to add to our first-person local history column ‘In His Own Words’ with longtime resident Bob Withington, here recalling a remarkable time as a youngster, still a student at Penngrove School, when he became a champion pig-breeder! We'll bring you a few of Bob's colorful tales over the next few issues. Three generations of Darlings work on this Petaluma Hill Road property which offers fresh-picked vegetables and fruits year-round. “Doc” Darling and his son, Gregg, run the farm together. Gregg’s wife, Heidi and their two sons are also regularly on-hand to help out. Whenever possible, he tries for local produce and when that’s not available, he works through his distributor to get the regional items that are grown as close to Sonoma County as possible. The Darlings are passionate about the success of their business. “If we don’t make it as a farm — the land will be built upon and force farming out of the community,” says Gregg’s wife, Heidi. In addition to the advantage of eating fresh vegetables, the Darlings want to stress to the community members the many advantages of buying locally grown produce. “Farming isn’t about farming … it’s about educating the public,” notes Heidi. Most weekends, three generations of Darlings are there to work the farm stand. Doc does most of the planting and soil preparation. Gregg heads up irrigation, bookkeeping and running the store. Heidi and the boys are on hand in the store to assist, or run out to pick something fresh for a customer. 5 Fra tes Rd If you seek the bucolic life typical of Sonoma county, the Penngrove area really does have it all: Holstein cows, vineyards, chickens … and, you’ll find farm stands filled with such abundance that you’ll be tempted to hit the brakes all along Adobe and Petaluma Hill roads. 1 2 3 Ea st W as hin gto n by Patty Lyn Tweten Darling Farms Doc, Gregg and Heidi Darling 7000 Petaluma Hill Road Penngrove, CA 94951 (707) 529-8048 www.darlingsfarm.com Da vis Ln You don’t need to go to the ends of the earth for great produce, just pull to the side of the road The farm stand opened in 2011, but the 20-acre property has been in and out of the Darling family for years. Doc ran a wholesale nursery there in the 80s and 90s then sold the property. Subsequent buyers defaulted on their loan and Doc found himself again the property owner. At that same time, Gregg’s job situation changed. Father and son decided to work together to keep the property in their family and develop it as a farm and produce stand. As one would expect, the busiest time of year is the fall. The Darlings are currently preparing for their upcoming pumpkin festival, which features farm-raised pumpkins and a bouncy house. Next spring, Darling Farms will introduce their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program that offers various packages at different subscription rates. With a package, customers receive store credit plus bonus items: before-hours access to the store on weekends, free pumpkins, and e-mail updates on current produce. The credit is good for anything offered at the store, including milk non-edible products. Darling Farms continues to experiment with different farming methods. Out of ten total acres, four are currently planted and the family clears about another acre each year. Cleaning up the property and maintaining proper crop rotation is one of their biggest challenges. Petaluma Hill Road at East Railroad Avenue Owners: Luu Saeturn, Kae Torn Saeturn Everyone in Penngrove has visited this quiet little strawberry stand on the northeast corner of Petaluma Hill Road and East Railroad Avenue. Many of us watch every spring for the signboard out front change from “closed” to “open”. But, very few of us see beyond the most delicious strawberries in Sonoma County. Darling Farms has increased the diversity of what they grow. From the first offerings of squash, tomatoes, carrots, beets, lettuce and corn, they have added chives, basil, beans, bell peppers and greens. They continually experiment with new crops to add to the mix. Farm stand customers can easily identify locally grown items by their labels. Orange labels mean the produce is grown on site, while green represents locally grown produce. White signs are reserved for conventionally grown items. Over the seasons, the Darlings have listened to what their customers want and there are more and more orange tags at the stand. Most items are picked daily and delicate items, such as chives and basil, are picked fresh on demand. Their tag line is, “What can we pick for you?” Redwood Montessori School “where children love to learn” Pre-school & Kindergarten • Morning, Afternoon & Full Day Sessions • Ages 3-6 years • Year-round $100 off first month’s tuition 11201 Main St, Penngrove 707-665-9830 Redwoodmontessori.com Open Tues.-Sat., Eve. by appoint. 4 PENNGROVE PROUD 6th Anniversary / Fall 2013 Since 2002, Saeturn Family Farm has been run by Luu and Tae Saeturn; members of an extensive network of immigrant farmers from Southeast Asia who grow strawberries throughout the Sacramento Valley and the North Bay. He has lived in the same house for more than 70 years, with his wife Gail for the past thirty three. A prize-winning pig breeder in his teens, a chicken farmer, truck driver for nearly fifty years and longtime Teamster, Bob shares some of his memories of an archetypal American life in Penngrove. Dad moved to Petaluma and drove truck and he bought this place right after the war. We started a grade B dairy, cream and butter. We had twenty cows, plus the chickens; and we started in on the pig business. I bought my first two pigs when I was nine years old and at one point I had a hundred head of hog. I showed them all over the state of California. I was in 4H Club just before they changed the age limit to ten years Young Bob with a boar at the Petaluma Fair. old, so at nine years old I was able to get in. When I was real young I had so much work to do here with my hogs, I had a coach come up here, he asked me at school if I wanted to play football and I said, yeah, but I don’t think my Dad’s gonna let me, so he came up and he asked my Dad, Is it alright for Bob to play football? My Dad said, Sure, he can play all the ball he wants. He’s gotta sell his pigs; he’s gotta sell his chickens... so end of conversation! I got these two pigs from this fellow up in Sebastopol. I started with a few little pigs and I would try to get my own breed, type of breed. I bought a boar from Fresno, sight unseen. I bet you it didn’t weigh fifty pounds. I paid a hundred dollars for it, and that was big money. I bought Homer in ‘48, I think, and we had him brought up by train into the Petaluma depot. Here I am, nervous as can be, and out comes this little wooden crate with Homer. He’d get his snout underneath the fence, the bottom board, and out he would come. He was harmless, he wouldn’t hurt a person; just if Homer wanted to go for a walk, he’d go for a walk. I was fourteen, when I got my driver’s license. I made enough money raising pigs and selling pigs to where I could buy my own truck. So I was hauling my own pigs to the local fairs and at fifteen I ventured out to the Alameda County Fair and wherever, and by sixteen, I would leave here and go fair to fair to fair. All my folks would ask me was to call when I was leaving a fair and call when I got to a fair. I was exhibiting and selling and on my sign it would say, Bob Withington, Registered Hampshires, Penngrove, California. Of course, everyone would ask where Penngrove was! My so-called, what would you call him, my chaperon I guess, was George Crane from the Crane Canyon. He would show sheep at all of these fairs so he would kind of keep an eye on Something Special is coming to Penngrove in Spring 2014 With a strong emphasis on “local”, we are seeking artisan producers of high quality products to showcase in a truly unique retail setting. ~ Farm to Table ~ Baked Goods, Jams Jellies, Oil & Vinegar Sauces & Salsa Chocolates and Sweets Spices & Herb products Tea & Coffee, Honey... One of my sows had four little pigs at the time, and they walked clear all the way down to the school. So I took a little stick and brought her back up the driveway with her little pigs. { I finally bred my own type of breed. Gerry also feels an important aspect of Edesia is to give back to the community. He is currently working with Homeward Bound of Marin, an organization for the homeless that has a culinary academy as part of their job-training program. Edesia is donating produce to the academy to help develop recipes that can be used for a line of culinary products to be featured at the Marketplace. A rainbow of dahlias punctuate the hard-pack adobe at Aztec Dahlias. Owner, Jamie O'Brien, plants dahlias by color for ease of stem cutting. That dream was to create a marketplace for local growers and artisans in the rich soil and culture of Sonoma County. He named his dream “Edesia” which is the Latin word for “feast”. And, he hopes to realize it under the shade of Sonoma Mountain amidst carefully tended gardens producing nutritious and sustainable foods. The Saeturns own three acres in the Dixon area as well. Thus, the stand offers earlier strawberries, and items that grow well in the Sacramento valley, such as melons and orchard fruits. On a given day, farm stand buyers will find beans, onions, tomatoes, cantaloupe, corn and blackberries. Although not organic, the fruit and vegetables are hand-tended the old-fashioned way. Great care goes into the harvesting and handling of the produce resulting in beautiful, unbruised berries, fruits and vegetables. The raw materials for Edesia lie in the old property itself. After the purchase in April of last year, Gerry has been gradually aligning the stars to meet with his vision. He imagines a gathering place for local growers and other artisans where customers can visit year-round to find farm fresh, seasonal and local produce. In the long-term, he hopes the location will serve as event center, picnic site, market place and active nursery. Kae Saeturn likes farming in Penngrove. He prefers the cooler weather here compared to Dixon, and appreciates the honesty of Penngrove consumers — he can step away from the stand to tend to the fields for a few minutes and know that his customers will be trustworthy with the produce. For the moment, Gerry has been busy renovating the nursery buildings for his to s er m plays lead custo new tenants. Strawberry prices range from $2.50 for a basket to $20.00 per flat. The next time you stop in for strawberries, be sure to try some of the other delicious produce available — Saeturn family hands tend it all. Because of the laundry list of real-estate-related careers that he had before retirement, Gerry brings an unusual insight to this venture. He notes, “It’s taking all my skill set to develop this property. It’s a joy — it’s exhausting — it’s a joy! The Edesia Marketplace will open to the public in the spring of 2014. This rainbowhued two-acre plot is the home of Aztec Dahlias. Jamie and Rosa O’Brien have been in the dahlia growing business for 12 years, six years at the Adobe Road location. Jamie began as dahlia hobbyist before launching Aztec. He had over 100 varieties in his own yard. “My wife, Rosa, said I needed to make my dahlia hobby pay,” he quips. After years working in real estate, renovating old buildings, and designing and building with a view to environmental requirements, Edesia owner Gerry Aronow retired to Sonoma County to play tennis and enjoy the fruits of his labors. However, he was not content to sit still. When he found out that the nursery property on Petaluma Hill Road was for sale, he decided to re-enter professional life and follow-up on a dream he’d first envisioned 30 years ago. During the summer months, the farm stand opens and the O’Brien’s begin selling cut flowers and potted dahlias. In the fall, the plants are dug up and the tubers are divided, washed and dried. Most tubers will go to online sales from Aztec’s website, but Jamie holds back about 5,000 to plant for the next season. The daily summer schedule is backbreaking. Farmer’s Markets are nearly half of Aztec’s business — they have a presence at eight different markets. The plants need to be dead-headed regularly for maximum bloom size and growth, and stems are cut daily for sale at the farm stand and for farmer’s markets. Between Jamie and his wife, Rosa, summer work is a sunrise to sunset undertaking. For the first time last spring, Jamie decided to start the dahlias in a greenhouse to get an earlier start to the sea- With extremely reasonable pricing , homem sauce is son. And on the website, www.aztecdahlias.com, you can place advanced orders for tubers from among Aztec’s 440 varieties to plant at home. Tubers begin shipping on April 1st. Jamie’s business varies from drive-bys to wedding planners, landscapers and florists. Part of the fun of visiting the farm in person is walking through the rows of dahlias in bloom. Though, he does point out that Aztec isn’t like a Christmas Tree farm: he can’t dig up a plant like a tree to take home — he’d be giving away his tubers for the following year. There are, however, the potted dahlias available for purchase. The long hours and hard work of being a dahlia farmer make the O’Brien’s long for more help and employees. But, Jamie is quick to point out his best asset: “Rosa!” he beams. PENNGROVE PROUD 15 Continued on page 21~ 6th Anniversary / Fall 2013 City of COTATI Arch’s Glass Inc. Cotati celebrated its 50th Anniversary as a city with a big party in La Plaza Park on Saturday July 13th, along with the Cotati Kids Day Parade & Festival. It all started with a pancake breakfast in the morning, fun in the park throughout the day and ended with music in the clubs at night. The city will celebrate all summer long with festivals of music and food and good time, reflecting Cotati's long tradition of agriculture, music and lifestyle, and its rich and varied history going back to pre-Columbian times. The strong Indian influence is proudly represented in the statue of the mythical Chief Kotate, while the unique six-sided central plaza harks back to the early Spanish days, and many of the street names recall the pioneering Page family. Carol’s father was a San Francisco policeman who died when Carol was nine. The family stopped coming up to the river as a result. Years passed without seeing each other but one day his mother said, “Carol Ann’s down there with her family. You’d do well to marry a girl like her.” He went down and visited her. Her hair was in curlers. They immediately fell in love. Their first date Tony took her to the dumps. Ah, young love. The second date he took her to ride horses and, although she had never ridden before, Tony said, “It looked like she’d been riding all her life.” He went home and told his cousin, “I’m going to marry that girl.” Two weeks later he proposed. A year later they were married and have been for 46 years and are still in love. One of the distinct advantages of living in Sonoma County is our access to one of the most beautiful coasts in the world. When we stand on the edge of the Pacific Ocean we are actually standing on land that was once the floor of the ocean. Shifting caused by plate tectonics caused the land to rise and form our coast. For thousands of years the Miwok families from the Penngrove area would make the pilgrimage to the coast to search for seafood. Not much has changed. by Chuck Lucas BBQ Oysters I must agree. The squid come in a light batter and are tender and tasty. The fried scallops are among the best I’ve ever had and the shrimp are succulent. A cardiologist might not recommend eating this food everyday but it is almost irresistible if I’m anywhere near the area. It is a worthy destination even if you don’t make it to the Bodega Head for that hike. If you are headed out to Bodega Bay to hike and explore there are several small family owned restaurants that make the trip even more worthwhile. I will tell you about two of my favorite places that I think are special and worth the trip. THE BOAT HOUSE When I first had the calamari at the Boat House in Bodega Bay my mission to find the perfect deep fried cephalopod was completed. I had found tentacle Nirvana. Sophia and Rick Powers have owned this tiny establishment since 1989. Previously it was known as the Dry Dock and sold mostly beer and wine. Sophia runs the restaurant with the help of her family of Analy High School students. For these young folks it is often their first job and Sophia pays well and treats them like they were her own. The affection can be seen in the way they work together. Sergio Perez shucks oysters at the Boat House Fried Scallops Tony was a full-time civilian fireman for the Federal Government around the Bay area and was assigned to the Coast Guard facilities in Two Rock before retiring. He now serves as one of five directors of the Bodega Bay Fire Department. The BBQ oysters are from Tomales Bay and come with a BBQ mild sauce. They are shucked on site with care taken by cook, Sergio Perez, to make sure there are no small pieces of shell left on the oyster. Sergio Perez, Angel Vasques, Sophia Powers,Joanna Sanchez and Juanita Garcia of the Boat House boat is kept by his customers and they take it home cleaned and ready to cook. Most of the seafood on the menu is caught locally if possible from boats in the harbor. The calamari is harvested from up north and frozen at Tides. Bodega Bay is the second largest salmon port on the Pacific coast and the busiest commercial fishing port between San Francisco and Eureka, and provides fresh fish for the best restaurants in the Bay Area. My six and a half year old grandson, Caden, says the calamari is his favorite food in the whole world and the tentacles are his favorite. The fish and chips would make a Brit feel like he was sitting in the shadows of Big Ben. The cod comes from right down the road and it would be hard to find any fresher. I rank their F & C very highly. The coleslaw is also very good. In 2000 the Anello’s lived up the road from the current site when a ‘for Customers enjoying the sunshine and chowder at Spud Point Crab Shack sale’ sign went up. With the help of financing from the Sonoma County Range they were able to finance the purchase. Three years of labor and perhaps a few miracles went into the effort but in 2004 they were able to open for business. Sophia and her daughter, Maren, have three horses and ride often. Maren attends Analy H.S. and competes in reigning events as well as being involved in 4H and plays softball. The outside patio is a great place to unwind with a cool IPA no matter what the weather is like. They are located at 1445 North Highway 1 and the phone number is 707-875-3495. SPUD POINT CRAB SHACK Tony and his son, Mark, own three boats and have two others that fish for them and are currently building another one. They fish for crabs and salmon that they use to supply their restaurant as well as distribute the crab to the entire Bay area. You can’t get crab that is any fresher. They sell it Tony, Carol, Gina and Lisa Anello Just across Bodega Bay at Spud Point is the Spud Point Crab Shack. Regular readers may recall that Spud Point was where John Keyes grew Bodega Reds on land in Bodega Bay and shipped the ‘taters via schooner to San Francisco. Rick is a commercial fisherman and he runs charters for the public off his 65’ boat the New Sea Angler and his other boat, Sandy Anne, seven days a week taking in salmon, ling cod and rock cod. The New Sea Angler can hold up to 49 passengers. For information on going fishing with Captain Powers you can visit their website http://www.bodegabaysportfishing.com/ or by calling 707-875-3495 or 707-875-9879. The Crab Shack was started by fisherman, Tony Anello and his wife, Carol. Tony and Carol met when they were three and four years old. Tony was from San Francisco and when he was 11 he bought a mustang. Not a Ford Mustang but a horse. From the age of 12 until he was 22 Tony was a semi-pro rodeo cowboy who roped steers in competitions around the west. Rick grew up in Castro Valley and as an eight year old he started fishing with his neighbor who was in the charter business. By nine, he was the youngest licensed fisherman in California and by 19 owned his first boat. Tony’s parents owned the Ring Canyon Campground, (Anello means ‘bell’ in Italian), in Guerneville where Carol’s family would Although Rick fishes everyday the seafood comes from the Tides commercial operation just down the road. Lisa is responsible for smoking the salmon. It has been called the best smoked salmon ever as declared by local customers that were visiting. And, in 2006, 2006 Green String Farm opened its doors to customers. All crops are grown with the goal of improving the land while growing food for people. Green String uses cover crops, such as barley and wheat to put nutrients back into the soil. Visitors won’t see tidy rows of well-manicured tomatoes and corn at this farm. Instead, they’ll find food crops intermingled with weeds in a sort of “peaceful coexistence.” According to the Green String website, “If every plant helps, then what are weeds but nature's cover crops? Instead of fighting against these persistent plants, we let them grow up alongside our planted cover crops and our food crops.” Green String Farm is a Mecca in the sustainable farming industry. As they got close they realized it was a 40 ton gray whale the size of their boat and that it was entangled in fishing line. Risking possible injury the crew attempted to undo the entangled fishing lines. After a brief struggle the whale allowed the fisherman to come close and using long bamboo poles, Mark and his crew were able to free the whale. The whale then swam around the boat and Mark’s father, Tony, said, “It looked like he was saying thank you.” Officials later determined through tagging that it was “June” the same leviathan that they had attempted to free from the netting off the coast of Orange County in April of 2012. Dungeness Crab, as fresh as can be. Green String Farm and from all over the country. The interns also do most of the weeding and hoeing, taking care of the chickens, and working in the farm store. In the afternoons, they take lessons from Bob Cannard about the natural process farming business. The farm stand offers a staggering array of produce — all harvested that day. Distinctions between varieties of produce may be fuzzy: the san marzano, plum and early girl tomatoes are all mixed together. One will find crab apples next to gravensteins and fujis. But that’s not the point. Green String interns harvest fruits and vegetables if and only if they’re ripe and when they are most nutritious. There is such an abundance of ripe delicious produce, one is inspired to go home and begin chopping, sautéing or canning. Pricing is very reasonable. Green Strings’ philosophy is that tasty nutritious food should be available to everyone. One can also purchase eggs from the resident chicken flock, and hormone-free grass-fed beef from their own cattle ranch located in Red Bluff. Misya Nuyttens is the internship coordinator and Green String Farm manager. Her favorite products are the honey produced in specially designed hives that promote bee health, and a salve made from beeswax, olive oil, and medicinal herbs grown on the farm. Green String Farm’s clientele is mostly local chefs, foodies, and families. There is a farm tour at noon every Saturday for the sustainable-farm-curious, and school field trips are encouraged. Misya notes that one of the day-to-day challenges is getting more customers up the driveway: the farm stand isn’t highly visible from the road. But, those who have been there return and bring their friends. And, there is an excellent web site with a detailed listing of available produce and pricing, so buyers can decide ahead of time if they want to make the trip (www.greenstringfarm.com). The Green String Farm store is open year-round, every day (except holidays) from 10-5; 10-6 during the summer months. When you visit plan to spend at least an hour and bring your own bag! Arm baskets are available to hold your produce while you browse. Take an afternoon in the next few weeks to do your own tour of the Penngrove Farm Stand tour. You probably pass these farm stands daily, perhaps twice. In a rushed world, it’s easy to talk yourself out of pulling over to the side of the road. Remember when you buy from a farm stand, you’re not only enjoying all the benefits of vine-ripened fruits and vegetables, you’re investing in a neighbor, a family, and the community. That is a win-win-win! PENNGROVE PROUD 21 6th Anniversary / Fall 2013 Mother Knows Best Penngrove Pantry Perfect fall dessert, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream Your Mother is always with you.
