Cotati Community Guide & Business Directory 2013 Then & Now Celebrating Our 50th Anniversary Mayor's Message As Mayor of the City of Cotati, I'm pleased to welcome you to our city. Cotati has long been considered the "Hub" of Mark Landman Sonoma County, by virtue of its central location, and its distinct and historic hexagonal plaza. Surrounded by beautiful vistas of hills, vineyards, majestic oaks and redwoods, Cotati offers all the benefits of living in a small city, with the cultural advantages of being located near major urban centers and a highly acclaimed state university. Cotati's roots are steeped in agriculture and music, and our citizens are proud of the diverse and charming community that has been shaped by over 100 years' history. - Table of Contents Mayor's Message 3 Chamber of Commerce 4 Message from Chamber President 5 Parks & Recreation 6 Education in Cotati 7 Conservation Corps North Bay 8 City of Cotati Profile 9 Calendar of Events 10 Prue Draper - Cotati Woman of the Year 11 Community Contacts & Important Numbers 12 Cotati's 50th Anniversary 15 Cotati at 50: Music in the Air 17 Church of the Oaks 23 Fun & Fitness in Cotati 24 We encourage you to come and visit, and in the process discover the spirit of Cotati. We do this in several ways which include our Quarterly Speaker Series, Open Houses and Ribbon Cutting Celebrations, Breakfast Meetings, After Hours Mixers and our weekly "Chamber Update" emailed each week to our data base of businesses and interested individuals. Patrick McCarty How we are different than most other Chambers is that we have developed a slogan: "Working together to build a prosperous, happy and safe community." I think the key word of our slogan is community. I can think of no other organization that strives harder to bring together our business proprietors, citizens and visitors into a thing called community. Our events demonstrate that intention year round. Our Farmers' Market, Kids Day Parade and Celebration, Jazz Festival, Oktoberfest and multi-evening holiday events are just some of the ways that we choose to bring the people of Cotati and our neighbors together, inclusively, as we actively seek to accomplish the goals that we have chosen. I have been active in the Cotati Chamber for several years and cannot recall a single luncheon meeting, breakfast meeting, ribbon cutting, open house or event of any kind that was deemed "members only." I invite each and every one of you to participate in any way that you might choose in the many activities provided by the Cotati Chamber of Commerce. A good place to start might be to send an email to; [email protected] and ask to be added to our data base so that you can receive our weekly Chamber Update that will keep you informed of what's going on in our community. I look forward to seeing those of you that I know, and meeting those of you whom I haven't met yet, as we work together to build a prosperous, happy and safe community. After they sold the paper Lloyd went to work for a printing company in San Francisco while Prue worked for the Argus Courier from 1970 until 1977. Cotati's Woman of the Year By Chuck Lucas In 1942 Kate Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award for her acting in the film, “Woman of the Year”. In 2013 Prue Draper was nominated and won FOUR “Woman of the Year” awards. She won these awards from the city, county, state and national offices of; the City of Cotati, David Rabbitt, the County Supervisor, Prue with recently donated Jim Boggio accordion Petaluma, State Senator of the 3 District, at the Cotati Historical Society Museum Lois Wolk and U.S. Representative, Mike Thompson of the Fifth Congressional District. That's a grandslam of “Woman of the Year” awards. But they were looking for adventure. After considering purchasing a coconut plantation in Tonga they decided they would apply for the Peace Corps. After waiting for a Pacific Island country in need of someone to teach printing skills they finally got their opportunity in Western Samoa. They locked everything up and left. When Prue got back in 1979 she went to work at the Rohnert Park – Cotati Times as a reporter. Here she wrote about the controversial issue of the day on whether to allow Hewlett-Packard to build a new campus on Petaluma Hill Road. HP hired her as a secretary for the facilities manager. HP was looking for a name for the road that led from Petaluma Hill Road to their new offices. It was Prue Draper who came up with the name Valley House Drive after the former road house located on the corner of East Railroad Avenue and Petaluma Hill Road. Prue and Lloyd were determined to take an early retirement. That didn't last too long and Prue was asked by the Press Democrat columnist and historian, Gaye LeBaron, to become her temporary assistant for six months. It turned out to be two years. A Georgia native, Prue grew up in Petaluma where her father had a chicken ranch. After graduating from Petaluma High she attended UC Berkeley. In 1950, while a camp counselor at Camp Noya, she became enamored with a young scout leader Lloyd Draper. Within a year they were married and moved to Cotati when Lloyd's cousin, Ed Runyon, enlisted the adventurous couple to help him run his newspaper, The Cotatian. Runyon owned two newspapers and asked Prue and Lloyd if they would like to buy the Cotati paper. They did. They ran the paper, doing everything themselves from writing, layout, photography and printing. Here they raised their three children and ran the paper and print shop until 1965. In 1989 they again tried their hand at retirement and traveled around the entire US in their RV taking many cross-country trips. They eventually traveled the world visiting “almost every” Pacific Island, Costa Rica, Peru, the Galapagos like Hope and Crosby making “Road” pictures. During this time she and Lloyd were among the City founders of Cotati, chairing the Incorporation Committee in 1963 that led to the successful incorporation of Cotati as a city. Prue was a board member of SSU's “Friends of the Library” and a docent at the Petaluma library's history room. In 2004 the Drapers authored Images of America Cotati published by Arcadia Publishing (www.arcadiapublishing.com)) a wonderful glimpse of Cotati's past. Arch’s Glass Inc. As many of the old time social clubs like the Oddfellows lost membership and closed they called Prue and Lloyd to see if they had room for their collection of historic items. The Drapers said they would take the items in and promised that someday they would find a permanent home for them. In 2007 they began pursuing the dream of a historical museum for Cotati. With the help of attorney Maurice Fredericks of Rohnert Park, they began the legal process to incorporate as a non-profit organization. It took three years but on June 22, 2007 the incorporation was completed and the couple fulfilled their promise when they found a home for the museum in the back of the old police station in what is now City Hall. Today, the museum is a beautiful gem that displays the history of Cotati from the Miwoks to the present day including the recent donation of Jim Boggio's accordion. Prue served as the first president of the museum and now is its historian. Since 1964 complete glass service Featuring Milgard Windows & Doors, Insulated Glass Replacement, Screens, Shower Doors & Mirrors Licensed Contractor #647838 Prue's partner in adventure, Lloyd B. Draper, died on April 1, 2010 but Prue, 83, still has twice the energy and drive of people half her age. Her courage, determination and stamina are to be admired and she has finally been recognized with these four well-deserved awards. Don't miss the free pancake breakfast in the morning at the Church of the Oaks on West Sierra. There will also be the 21st Kids Day Parade and Festival with food and fun for all. By 1837 they had begun handing out land grants to establish Mexico's claim to the area Three of the city's esteemed founders that was also coveted by the Russians and British. The 17,238 acre Rancho Cotati was first granted to Texas native Captain Juan Castenada in July 1844 and contained the modern Cotati, Rohnert Park and parts of Penngrove. Unable to pay the troops it was common at the time that loyal soldiers were paid off in land grants. Castenada, who preferred to live in San Francisco, was unable to find enough workers this far north and was in danger of losing the land grant and decided to sell it off. Larkin, a major land holder in California, and whom some considered to be one of the wealthiest Americans, then sold it to a Mr. Thomas S. Ruckle. During the Bear Flag Rebellion of 1846 the deeds of the ranchos were lost or destroyed. When Dr. Page died his sons took over the management of the ranch. In his will, Page set forth terms that the land could not be subdivided until his youngest son, William, turned 25 years of age in 1892. This made it the last of the large California land grants to be broken up into smaller parcels. In 1849 Ruckle sold it to Dr. Thomas Stokes Page for $16,000 a substantial sum in those days. Page was born in New Jersey in 1815 and at the tender age of 21 Page graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (est. 1765). Page was practicing medicine in Valparaiso, Chile where he met Faxon Atherton, also from Massachusetts, who suggested to Page that he should come to Northern California. As is often the case in waves of immigration, it was Larkin who Dr. Thomas Stokes Page suggested that Atherton, (who made his fortune in shipping, import and export in the Gold Rush), should come to northern California. The city of Atherton bears his name. The unique hexagonal layout of the center of Cotati mirrored Page's hexagonal barn. The Page barn was located at the present site of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The streets that border La Plaza as it's known today were named by Wilfred Page after the six male children of the Pages: Henry, Charles, Arthur, George, William and Olof. His sisters received no such accolades but Wilfred named a street after himself on what he saw to soon be a major thoroughfare, but is in fact, but a lonely little road in Rohnert Park that runs from the 101 Freeway and fades to the west of Stony Point Road. The hexagonal layout of the “Hub” resembled a wagon wheel and although found in Europe and Washington D.C., it is very rarely seen in the U.S. and in 1973 it was declared a State Historical Landmark. In 1870 the San Francisco and Northern Pacific Railroad ran from Petaluma to Santa Rosa. Along the way they had a water and wood stop for their locomotives at what was called Page's Station later to be called “Cotate,” with an “e”. It is said that folks found the name difficult to pronounce and it was changed to “Cotati,” with an “i”. By 1893 the Page brothers formed the Cotati Land Company and started selling real estate in parcels of five to twenty acres. The brothers kept 4,000 acres for their own ranch and sold off about 9,000 acres to eager buyers. This Due to the disarray of the land grant records it took Page and his lawyers seven years of struggle with U.S., California, Mexican and Spanish laws to prove his ownership. Page in the mean time had established a large cattle operation in absentia and had a large home built on a small hill overlooking modern Cotati. Page and his wife, Anna, returned to Chile during that time until illness caused him to return to California in 1869 where he remained until his death in 1872 at age 57. George P. McNear, a Petaluma pioneer who arrived in California in 1856 and built an empire and fortune in the grain, shipping, banking, real estate and railroad businesses, purchased the remainder of the rancho and, like the Pages, was an absentee landlord. The management of the ranch fell to the care of Fred Keppel a blacksmith, who was born in Marin County in 1878. Two young lawyers, Paul Golis, a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Duke Law School and Petaluma native, Maurice Fredericks, of the University of Santa Clara Law School, joined forces in a law firm that had clients from the building and construction industry. The idea to create a planned city from scratch appealed to their business sensibilities and they started to plan the new town of Rohnert Park in 1954. The duo made a trip down to Hollister and offered the Rohnert family $200 for each of the 2,700 acres ($540,000). An appeal to the County Supervisors was approved for a special assessment district to finance the infrastructure of the new community. In his A History of Rohnert Park: From Seed to City John H, DeClercq said, “The new district consisted of two rental houses, a barn, flooded fields and pheasants, but not a single tree and four adults living in the district boundaries.” By 1915 local farmers from the towns of Penngrove and Cotati donated the right of way for the construction of the Redwood Highway. that would run from Petaluma to Santa Rosa. It was the major thoroughfare until the freeway came in 1957. In 1929 McNear sold the property to Waldo Emerson Rohnert a Detroit native who was an honors student from the Michigan State Agricultural College who graduated in 1889. The elder Rohnert became associated with Charles Copeland Morse, “The American Seed King,” and founder of the Morse Seed Company. Rohnert grew seed crops of sweet peas (as seen on RP's signs as an emblem of its past) onions, lettuce, carrots, mustard and garlic. After Waldo's death in 1933 the operation was taken over by his son, Fred Rohnert, a Stanford Law School graduate. The younger Rohnert managed the company from Hollister but his business of the wholesale selling of vegetable seeds was such an agricultural success that it was considered second only to Santa Rosa's Luther Burbank gardens. After World War II was over and the GI's came home to Sonoma County, the fields, orchards and pastures began to catch the eye of developers looking to convert the fertile ag lands to tract homes for young families eager to buy into the American Dream. In 1957 the Golis family moved into the first residential home built in Rohnert Park on Adele Avenue. By 1960 there were rumblings by the community leaders of Rohnert Park about incorporating as a city. It was put up for election but was defeated by a vote of 118 to 85. But that didn't end the debate. Some people wanted to merge the towns of Rohnert Park and Cotati into a single city to be called Cotati Park. Zion proposed that it would be better for RP to handle it's own services and would be an upgrade over what the County could provide. The County was petitioned to allow an election to decide about the incorporation of the town. In a vote of 308 to 238 the vote passed and on Tuesday, August 28, 1962, Rohnert Park would be incorporated becoming the fourth largest city in the county with a population of 2,775 people. Rohnert Park would become the first city since 1905 to incorporate. Continued from previous page others didn't want either of those proposals. Dr. Bill Kortum DVM, one of the founders of Cotati and the chairman of the incorporation boundary committee wrote, “A number of meetings had occurred between citizens of the two unincorporated communities: experts were consulted, the Manual of Incorporation by Scott was obtained and a mutual incorporation was proposed. Paul Golis was adamantly opposed to the mutual incorporation, claiming that the lack of planning, old sewers and inadequate streets of old Cotati would bankrupt a new city. Cotati's volunteer fire department was providing protection for Rohnert Park. Cotati had spearheaded and secured the placement of Sonoma State College on East Cotati Avenue (bumper stickers read “College in Cotati – It's a Natural”) and Rohnert Park's public utility district was to provide the college with sewer connections. Then the astute Dr. Kortum was struck by a thought, “The Wednesday morning following Tuesday's Rohnert Park incorporation election, I realized that the official recognition of the vote tally would not occur for a week. On the following Tuesday the County Clerk would report the vote tally to the Board of Supervisors, after which the Board would certify the election. I knew that Rohnert Park, once a city, could under state law veto any incorporation of a new city as close as Cotati.” Because of Dr. Kortum's busy veterinary practice two days passed before he was able to call Prue and Lloyd Draper who published The Cotatian, Cotati's local newspaper. The Drapers put the paper to press on Thursdays and wouldn't be available until Friday morning. “Prue and Lloyd began work on Friday morning to set up the paper work and obtain the petition signatures under the guidance of the Scott's Manual of Incorporation. The goal was to file a petition to initiate the incorporation of Cotati on Tuesday morning before the Board of Supervisors could declare Rohnert Park a city.” The pressure was on to incorporate Cotati over a short four day weekend. In addition to Kortum and the Drapers, they were joined by local realtor Joe Dorfman, Dr. Fred Groverman DVM, Al Falletti, Cotati North Plaza, early 20th Century In 1962 William T. Zion was hired to investigate the practicality of the two towns incorporating under the same umbrella. Zion came to the conclusion that it was “feasible, but not advised” to have the two towns incorporate together citing the costly infrastructure problems of Cotati's sewers and roads. Dr. Kortum continued, “A breakaway group led by Golis filed for separate incorporation but the boundary lines did not include the new college site.” Cotati 8755 Pine Lane, Cotati, CA Locally owned and operated for 50 years Open Mon-Sat 8:00 am to 5:30 pm Free estimates carlsbodyshopcotati.com We warranty all our work & work with all insurance companies Redwood Montessori School Discover the Rich, Full Flavor of Peet’s “where children love to learn” Since 1966, we’ve been roasting coffee the old-fashioned way— by hand, in small batches—to ensure that each bean’s distinctive flavor is realized in the cup. Bill writes, “My assignment was to draw a map of the City's new boundaries and I met with Joe Dorfman to seek his aid. During the boundaries drawing we extended a 50foot corridor on East Cotati Avenue to included Sonoma State College, an acceptable maneuver under Scott's Manual. Soon our reading of Scott's direction revealed the need to a metes and bounds description of the map, an enormous undertaking. Joe Dorfman, in the proper spirit, called a number of people qualified to work on metes and bounds description and finally reached the wife of a person who turned out to be on a fishing boat on Bodega Bay. A shortwave radio call was made to the boat and the man came in from fishing to start a whole weekend of boundary description.” Unfortunately, the man's name has been lost and his name remains a mystery. Calls to the County recorder to find his name have not been returned as of this time. Anyone with information about him should contact the Cotati History Museum at 707-794-0305 or email at [email protected]. Even more incredible is that the work was done without the aid of attorneys which would be unheard of today. That would become problematic. Dr. Kortum sums it up this way, “Unfortunately the final word from County Counsel was that the fifty foot wide corridor to Sonoma State was not wide enough to meet the recently passed state law (LAFCO) regarding the width of city controlled corridors. Sadly the University of California publication on incorporation written by Scott that allowed the 50 ft. corridor had not been rewritten to accommodate the new law. Cotati lost its hard won claim to Sonoma State's geographical identity. But we provided the opportunity for Cotati to decide its own future.” Over the weekend of August 25th to the 26th of 1962 Lloyd and Prue Draper began to collect the signatures of property owners to incorporate the city. On Monday morning they succeeded in delivering the petition, proper paper work and the metes and bounds map to the Board of Supervisors with only hours to spare before Rohnert Park would be certified as a city by the Board of Supervisors. The Board granted the petition from the Cotati citizens and an election was held on July 2, 1963 with a turnout of 84% with 278 voting for incorporation and 47 voting against the proposal. Prue Draper notes that the Cotati History Museum has records showing that the election total costs were less than $100.00. The citizens of Cotati owe a great debt of gratitude to the City Founders for their tireless dedication, determination and very hard work for making the City of Cotati the thriving community that it is today. treatsforchickens.com 877.598.4468 Just about everything you need to keep your backyard pet chickens looking and feeling great. Everyone is welcome for delicious home-made pancakes and coffee! Once you’re filled up on pancakes, take a load off between West Sierra and Old Redwood Highway as a spectator, or burn some calories and join the parade procession! Spancky’s too is a downtown favorite. The Cotati Yacht Club & Saloon can also get busy, and the Eight Ball is a good place to kick back. The parade gets moving at 10am and participants will be judged in a variety of categories and prizes will be awarded at the festival in the park. VIPs from the City of Cotati and all around Sonoma County will be in attendance, and introduced on stage. The Cotati Historical Society is planning a walking tour of Cotati and a History Hunt, led by our very own local historian and Cotati’s ‘Woman of the Year’ Pru Draper, that will lead folks on a journey through time and reveal interesting facts and details about 31 buildings in the city. This adventure will start two weeks before our 50th Anniversary event, so check the website (www.cotatis50th.com) in July for the official map. Perhaps the brightest new musical note in town is at the Redwood Cafe where owners Michael McCullaugh and Mustafa Jamal, have revived live performances on the Cotati ‘strip’ with their Redwood After Dark series: Free open mic nite on Thursdays with Andre & Jeremy, the swing jazz of the 18-piece J & H Big Band on the 2nd Friday of each month, and 9-piece Lakay, with singer Mystic Man, also booked in a regular Friday slot and on the 4th Friday of each month, it’s Reggae at the Redwood! With music coordinators Mark Benanti booking the reggae on Friday nights, Andrea De Channes handling Saturdays, and Mooka Rennick presenting a Wednesday night Prairie Sun Showcase, this is an exciting new venue for local music fans. The food’s pretty good too! The Cotati Kids Day Parade and Festival is put on entirely by volunteers, like the Boys & Girls Club of Rohnert Park, and funded through donations from local businesses like Oliver’s Market, Redwood Empire Disposal, Exchange Bank and AM Printing of Rohnert Park! One of them supposedly lost it in a card game. Page allowed the congregation to buy two adjacent plots more cheaply. For $10, again in gold coin, the Church of the Oaks acquired plots eight and nine in 1909. The congregation promptly began building a social hall and what is now known as the Rose Cottage, a small building rented out as a home once and now used for small meetings and other activities. Church records indicate that 13 members signed a Church Charter dated June 4, 1901. O The picturesque Church of the Oaks is home to a vibrant spiritual community and is often utilized for weddings, and hosts more than twenty 12-Step programs every week. Sadly, the last two of the proud, and very old, oak trees were found to be diseased and had to be removed in 2004. ne hundred twelve years ago a small group of dedicated Congregational individuals put their time and talent to a project of building a church. The building was like a miniature version of the numerous large ones in New England. Church of the Oaks is the perfect image of a small town church of the last century. Complete with its steeped roof, it has been standing at the corner of West Sierra and Page streets in Cotati since the land was purchased March 6, 1906. Built of redwood, the church is in its same location since its completion in 1907. The building has never been rebuilt. As years passed the community of Cotati prized this little church and its accompanying two buildings as a significant landmark. Cotati is an energetic and diverse community. Church of the Oaks appreciates being an integral part of Cotati. Through its participation in the Chamber of Commerce it supports the Kids Day Parade, which this year will be combined with Cotati's 50th Anniversary celebration. They will also again be hosting their annual pancake breakfast that morning, free for everyone. The Sebastopol Congregational Church purchased "lot 7 of block 7" from the Thomas Page Company for "$100 in gold coin". Over the years a grove of oak trees grew up around the church, hence the name, Church of the Oaks. Cotati, Ca. cotatilargeanimal.com ¢ 31 ∫ Cotati: Sonoma County’s “Peaceable Kingdom” By Patty Lyn Tweten nuclear facility at Bodega Head, or for helping create the 1972 Coastal Initiative that lead to the California Coastal Commission. But, before all that, he opened the first veterinary practice in Cotati in 1955. A graduate of the new Veterinary School at UC Davis, Dr. Kortum set up his practice out on Gravenstein Highway where it has operated for the last 57 years. Three years later, he was joined by Dr. Fred Groverman. Before he retired, Dr. Kortum expanded the practice to 8 veterinarians and constructed a large animal clinic for surgeries and lab work. The large practice split into two hospitals, one for large animals and one for small, in 1984. The large animal practice, Cotati Large Animal Hospital, has a staff of four Veterinarians with Dr. Gene Harlan as the senior partner. Arriving in 1974, Harlan was attracted to the Cotati area by the amount of high-end horse and cattle work available. He says the wide and varied nature of his work keeps the job interesting. His typical day might include attending to a lame mule, dressing a wound on a horse and vaccinating cattle, with a couple of horse dental raspings thrown in. Dr. Harlan is especially proud of the surgery and lab, as it is unique to a large animal practice. Most often, Dr. Kortum & his wife Lucy his patients come to him to be treated in a controlled, well-lighted environment that is preferable to a cramped stall or muddy pasture. The clinic features a large operating room specifically for surgeries that require complete anesthesia. The padded walls and roughened floors allow groggy animals to awaken safely without injuring themselves. There are also special surgical pens for standing animals so operations can proceed safely for vet and patient. Most interesting is a tilt table that has the power to safely lift and tilt a large animal on its side for foot procedures. Enthusiastic and informative, Dr. Harlan has been very involved in the community as the Cattlemen’s Association president and a 4-H leader. He also established a preceptor program at the hospital that allows veterinary students to see “real world” Dr. Gene Harlan of Cotati Large Animal Hospital flushes the tear ducts in a horse in the hospital's large clinic. Cotati is a community of animal lovers. One can walk down any street and see a dog walker or two, and the gregarious chickens in front of Walgreens are a constant source of amusement. But to say that the community merely cherishes its pets is an understatement. The care and keeping of animals is interwoven with the history and culture of this city. Beginning as a sheep and cattle ranch, the town was designed around the railroad station, with the land around it parceled into small farms. Thus, an interesting mix of “rural” and “urban” developed throughout the first half of the 20th century. At the very heart of Cotati’s foundation in 1963 was a desire to protect the city’s unique rural feel from encroachment by Rohnert Park — an effort that was spearheaded by local veterinarian and, later renowned environmental activist, Dr. Bill Kortum. In the last half-century, businesses have popped up to meet the animal care needs of town residents. And, in turn, these businesses have contributed back to the community in unique and interesting ways. During his years in Cotati, he has seen “a couple of lifetimes of pets.” One of the most memorable clients was a couple with a big Rottweiler. Their previous vet would only see the animal if it was muzzled. Dr. Reif worked slowly and carefully with the dog so that it was comfortable and could be examined safely without a muzzle. That Rott was his patient for another 16 years. It seems that Cotati has embraced Dr. Reif as he has embraced the city’s pets. One of the things that Dr. Reif likes best about his vet location is the pleasure of walking through town hearing, “hi, Doc” as he passes. applications of their craft. He points out that a unique aspect of the practice is the high number of organically raised herds and grassfed beef in the western part of Sonoma County. “You just don’t see dairy cows out grazing like you do here,” Dr. Harlan notes. Cotati Large Animal Hospital has a total of four veterinarians on staff, all of which are native Californians. In addition to cattle and horses, the large animal hospital treats sheep, goats, pigs and camelids (alpacas and llamas.) Cotati Small Animal Hospital has remained next to Cotati Large Animal Hospital since the two practices split in 1984. Dr. Fred Groverman continues as a partner in this practice with Dr. William Cook. He has been an active community board serving on the Sonoma County Fair board, the board of Petaluma Valley Hospital, and Waugh School board. A Petaluma native, Dr. Groverman also has an enduring commitment to his family’s Shropshire Sheep ranch in Petaluma, begun in 1934. In fact, he even has a strain of Shropshires named after him. Dr. Cook joined the Cotati Small Animal Hospital team in 1977. He notes that pet owners in Cotati are compassionate about their pet care and down to earth and friendly. Over the years, he has treated many animals at the hospital, but a four-month-old kitten with a broken leg that came to visit the hospital in 1996 really stands out. Dr. Cook took on the kitten, nursed her back to health and named her “Fur.” She remained at the hospital and became the official greeter for 16 years. It was only last year that she passed away and into the annals of feline history. The Vet Around the Corner Hidden in plain sight just off the plaza in the old Rexall building is the La Plaza Veterinary Clinic owned and operated by Dr. Joel Reif. Founded by Dr. Katheryn Hinkle and her husband, Carlton, the hospital has four veterinarians and an animal chiropractor. Unique to the hospital is its comprehensive approach to animal care combining western medicine, chiropractic treatment, Chinese herb therapy and bioresonance (a form of electromagnetic therapy.) These alternative therapies are used in conjunction with traditional western medicine treatments, or when those traditional treatments have not been as successful as desired. The hospital also prides itself on offering the cutting edge of current veterinary medical practices. They offer the latest in technology in their diagnostic tools and therapies from MRIs to chemotherapy. “Our philosophy is: We practice compassionate aggressive veterinary medicine,” says Carlton Hinkle, business Church of the Oaks Continued on next page A Non-Traditional Metaphysical approach to expanding enlightenment Artful Arrangements All are welcome in Peace, Joy, and Love Time slips away. However, the staff understands that pet owners can have budget constraints and tries to work inside the means of every client. One of the reasons that the Hinkles set their hospital in Cotati is the demographic profile of the community. “The pet owners absolutely love their animals and do the best for them,” notes Mr. Hinkle. “The people are earthy, they call it like they see it — and, they’re accepting,” he adds. Like human medicine, veterinary medicine is beginning to consolidate into large hospitals, but he appreciates Cotati’s support of independent business owners. they’ve expanded their store to meet their customers' needs. They offer dozens of hay and grain blends, as well as bedding and straw. “Whenever people wanted something, we’d order it,” quips Alice Larsen. Bob and Alice are lifetime Sonoma County residents. As long as they’ve been in Cotati, they have also been instrumental in the town’s development. They were present in 1966 when three busloads of dignitaries inspected the 220 acres of pastureland that was to become Sonoma State, handing them Gravenstein apples as they stepped off the bus! 44 years later, Bob Larsen delivered an enormous load of straw bales to the construction site of the future Green Music Center. He soon found himself lining up the bales to create a life-sized floor plan of the building. Each “room” was spray painted with a dollar amount and auctioned off later that day. (The Green Music center was eventually completely funded with private donations.) Sometimes, Bob and Alice Larsen miss the dairy days (the bookkeeping was a lot easier with only one client.) Now the store sees a healthy 125-225 customers a day. But, they love Cotati and the people who live there. “They’re a great bunch of people and they love animals,” notes Bob. Creature Comforts If it hops, flies, gallops, grazes or grunts you can shop for it at Larsen’s Feed Store. A Tag, a Leash, a Home At the same time that Rohnert Park and Cotati were incorporated, the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter was built. It has been caring for animals ever since. Its staff and volunteers handle over 1200 animals a year, returning lost pets and rehabilitating and adopting out abandoned pets. It also serves as an educational resource for the community. After selling their dairy business in 1973, the Larsens found themselves with a barn full of surplus hay and set about selling it. After the supply was gone, customers asked, “Aren’t you going to sell hay again?” Thus the business began. It’s a personal business and people treat dogs here the way they should,” she says. Just next door is Frizelle Enos Feeds, which came to the area in 2011. A sister store to Sebastopol’s 74-year-old Frizelle Enos, this location was initially set up as a distribution and storage facility according to Keith Benson, manager. “As we were cleaning and setting up the warehouse, many previous customers of the former Penngrove Hay and Grain came in looking to buy products,” he explains, “so we changed our focus to opening a retail store.” One of the things he likes about the area is the diversity of animals people have. “We are in an area where small farms still exist and where there is urban growth. So, one minute I may be talking to a customer about cattle feed, and the next I will be talking about diamond studded cat collars. Whether you have a horse, chicken, dog, cat and even goldfish, we can feed it,” he adds. Sydney and kitty, and Karen and bunny at RP Animal Shelter Pet owners can get free pet tags and microchips for their animals. There is a low-cost spay and neuter service. Additionally, senior pet owners on a fixed income can take advantage of the Silver Paws program that assists with vet care. People can receive dog training and kids can attend summer “critter” camp. Teens, college students and adults are encouraged to volunteer their time where their rewards are a lick, wag or yip instead of dollars and cents. The shelter is also the perfect place to find your next pet. You can browse the website (www.rpanimalshelter.org) to look at available animals. Ms. Zeldes suggests, “It’s best to come in and visit. We will gladly help you find a pet that matches your lifestyle and will fit in with your family.” All dogs and cats are examined by a veterinarian and vaccinated before leaving the shelter. They go home with food, a collar and leash or travel box, all for a reasonable adoption fee of $95. Ms. Zeldes encourages residents to bring abandoned animals to the shelter. “We can scan for a microchip and hopefully get the animal reunited with his worried parents.” With a caring, convenient and robust facility like the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter in the community, there is no reason to turn your back on a lost or strayed animal! Businesses have come to Cotati to meet the needs of pet and livestock owners. But, they have given back as well by educating its youth, supporting its seniors, and helping shape the city in its growth and development.
