Index The Sweet Streets of Penngrove — Page 4 Welcome to our 4th Anniversary issue and forgive us if we’re understandably proud of it! It’s been a tough and exhilarating road, but our page of front-page covers stands testament to a gratifying endeavor and we hope a token of pleasure, promotion and enjoyment for all our readers, both local and long distance. It’s always fascinating to discover the origins of street names we now take for granted. We are also pleased to present a new column on the Penngrove 4-H, and invite everyone to get involved in this extremely worthwhile organization; and also a story on a wonderful school project involving bottle caps, but with a lesson there for all of us. Finally I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks once again to everyone in the community, from our faithful advertisers who help keep our engine running to all of you, our readers in the community and beyond, who are our real inspiration and the reason we exist. What did Davis do and did they grow tulips on Dutch Lane? As we leave Sesame Street, we look down on Palm Avenue I called Jay Palm at his saddle shop and he contacted his second cousin, Pat Tyler, who relayed this story to me: “My Dad was Dolph Palm and his father was Gus Palm. Dolph said Gus moved to the old ranch in Penngrove after the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906, "he told me. "My father was seven and remained on the ranch till he died. Gus left the ranch in Penngrove and rode to work on horseback every day to the property that is now owned by the Street Joseph’s in Cotati. His well-worn path became a back road, then a service road, and finally, much later, a county road.” Sure, that's easy. Just take Hatchery Road off Old Redwood Highway to Goodwin Avenue, make a right on Palm Avenue, go down a few blocks and make a left, and there it is - Sesame Street Glad to have cleared that up for those of you who thought that was merely a rhetorical question. It's a magic carpet ride Every door will open wide Visiting Penngrove's Sesame Street makes me want to take that magic carpet ride over Penngrove and discover where some of the Penngrove street names come from and who were the Penngrove pioneers behind those names. So fasten your seat belts and let's take a little flight of fancy over Penngrove. Heading south from Palm Avenue we can look down to where it runs into Goodwin Avenue If you look down on your right you will see Elysian Avenue The dictionary defines Elysian as meaning delightful or blissful. Virgil, the Roman poet, created the concept of the Elysian Fields as a peaceful resting place for Roman soldiers as their heavenly reward for heroism on the battle field. Penngrove pioneer, David Wharff, built the first residence on that road, it wouldn't surprise me if David or his wife, Olive, may have had a hand in giving it that name. We usually take the roads we drive and their names for granted. But who were the Formschlags? Who was Goodwin and how Miller Road is just off of Elysian Road and is named for George and/or David Miller who was a minister of the Penngrove Church from 1915 to 1918 and again from 1920 to 1922. His brother, David, was minister from 1922 until 1923. Cover Photo: New playground structure in Penngrove Park. In the current economic environment, it is really impressive that you have given our little town an extra identity and something to truly be proud of. We always look forward to the next issue! Thank you, Janet Morgan - Penngrove Dear Lynda, I wanted to say thank you for covering so many local community events, especially the school functions and children’s activities. Our kids are really the lifeblood of the community and it is always so encouraging to read about their activities and see photographs of them enjoying themselves. Oh, to be young again! Margaret Smith - Penngrove Send letters or comments to Penngrove Proud, POB 553, Penngrove, CA 94051 or email: [email protected] The new school year is well under way for Penngrove students who returned to a sprucedup campus thanks to the enthusiasm and energy of the Plantin' Panthers, an ever-growing group of concerned parents and local residents, who held their first annual Campus Clean Up day just a week before term began. Fifteen families came out to support them and the upkeep of the school. The annual Back to School BBQ and Potluck was held on August 14th with many families and school staff enjoying the tasty fare and getting re-acquainted. The Sixth grade held a bake sale for dessert with funds raised going towards their Outdoor Education fund. They also held an Outdoor Ed fund-raiser raffle last weekend at the Cotati Accordion Festival, half of all the proceeds went directly back to the Outdoor Ed fund. The 6th grade kids were responsible for selling the raffle tickets prior to and at the event, and at the end of the day, Penngrove kids were invited on stage to announce the winners. Skate nights continue to be very popular, with Mr. Z’s class winning the Ms. Johnson's 3rd grade class ready for the jog-a-thon - Photo courtesy of Lisa Hartman ‘most participants’ contest at the first one of the year. Every entry fee earns $1 for the school! The next one is Sept. 16th. The annual school jog-a-thon fund-raiser was held at the end of August with the whole school participating. Students got pledges from family and friends to see how many laps they could run, and all the money raised stays right here at Penngrove School. Every day at lunchtime, Penngrove students now have access to Recess Renaissance, a home-grown program that has been celebrated by the State Department of Education to “promote social interactions and creative expression.” The award-winning program offers guided activities and student partnerships during the lunchtime break. As a result, students that had difficulty joining with playground cliques are now able to engage in play with fellow students. Spooky time is here again: The annual Halloween Carnival will be held at the school on Saturday, October 29th and is always a lot of fun. This is for the whole community, so come and enjoy the ghosts and goblins. There will be games, contests, a cakewalk and of course a campy and colorful costume parade. The Clear Choice BARBARA J. Perry MBA ^ Broker Associate Realtor ^ TM DRE Licence #01871490 November 2010 FREE FALL 2011 Wishing to save a few bucks on commission, some adventurous sellers embark on the home selling task without an agent. You’ve heard the usual arguments against doing this — the paperwork hassle, the improper pricing, the legal pitfalls — so I will not talk about those here. Instead, here are the drawbacks of a different kind that are almost always overlooked — the emotional ones. That Uncomfortable Feeling To some people selling is second nature — they easily strike up conversations with perfect strangers and quickly earn their trust and their business. However, for a larger majority, tr ying to sell something to a stranger feels uncomfortable. The “uncomfortableness” is amplified if a person has an emotional attachment to the thing being sold (as is the case with homes). Hearing negative comments about one’s home and facing rejection repeatedly is a dreadful experience for many solo-sellers. Those who work with an agent have it easy. A good agent will gently provide advice on what improvements are needed and how to best stage the home for showings. The agent handles the showings, answers the objections of potential buyers, and is trained to handle the “salesy” part of guiding someone from “just looking” to “I want to make an offer.” The seller just sits, smiles, and waits for a signed offer to arrive. Anxiety As you already know, selling a home involves lots of paperwork, much of it mandated by law. Forget something, and you may find yourself in legal hot water. For-Sale-By-Owners may be fairly certain that they have dotted all the “i”s and crossed all the “t”s, but many will still worry: “Did I provide all of the disclosures? Was everything done properly?” This creates anxiety. Then, after the sale, the unexpected call: “Hi, this is the buyer. There’s water in the basement and this was not disclosed to me before the purchase.” The seller stutters: “I was not aware of that...” “We’ll see,” replies the buyer, “I’ll have someone contact you soon.” Now the seller has to sweat and worry and agonize and lose sleep waiting for that call from “someone” whose name is probably followed by “ESQ.” Don’t get me wrong — many solo sellers complete their transactions without any legal problems. But just thinking, “Am I forgetting something” creates unnecessary anxiety. How does working with an agent alleviate this? An agent is trained in all the different legal aspects of selling a home. Not only does this minimize the chances of something going wrong, but it also gives the seller added peace of mind — one less thing to worry about. Does this mean that agents are perfect and never make mistakes? No, but they have Errors and Omissions Insurance if something should go wrong. Hey, even more peace of mind! As winter approaches, the real estate market will likely slow down. That’s when it becomes especially important to have a skilled Realtor on your side. If you are buying, a knowledgeable Realtor will know where to find good homes, even if there are fewer homes on the market. If you are selling, a good agent will know how to attract qualified buyers, even if fewer people are looking. Are you thinking of buying or selling soon? If so, give me a call or send me an e-mail today, and let’s work together. I offer thorough knowledge of the local market, friendly service, and no sales pressure. Barbar er Barbaraa JJ.. PENNGROVE PROUD Journey to the Heart of Penngrove Your Community Magazine As I look at these covers of the Penngrove Proud, it hardly seems like four full years have passed since this crazy idea came into my head - to start a magazine about the town that I had grown to love so much. Looking back over this time, I realize what an incredible journey it’s been to the very heart of Penngrove; learning about it’s past and present; it’s places and people, its cares and concerns. And discovering what a truly special community this is. It all started one evening not long after I moved to Penngrove, looking for fresh and exciting things to do in the graphic design field. I had produced many magazines for other people and decided this was the time and place to start my own. Little did I know what would come of it. As any one who has had an idea, the initial concept sometimes seems too immense to consider; and in a tenuous economy - was I plain crazy or just insane? I started out by designing a small version of what I conceived and printed it out on my office printer. I then set out to sell some advertising. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that there would be a time in life where I would be selling advertising! But after some early stumbles, sales went fairly well and I managed to stop sweating before I went in to meet with people. I got so much support and appreciation that I just kept going and it took on a life of its own. The Penngrove Proud was born. It has been an indescribable pleasure just meeting everybody - making contacts to find interesting stories and people, learning about new businesses in town or new potential advertisers! One thing always leads to another. I would talk with someone who would say “Oh you have to talk to so and so” and connect me with them. My brother John, a writer and producer, mostly in the music business, came on board with me from the beginning to write stories and correct my columns. After I learned that bottlecaps weren’t being recycled at the curbside pickup in our area, I thought that the art value plus the recycling awareness issue would be great for our school.” Michelle envisioned a large wall mural project involving all the school’s students and gained the full support of Principal, Kathleen Larsen, and the school’s staff. recess or staying after school because they wanted to see it completed as much as I did.” Unveiled at the end of last school year, the 8’ x 16’ mural depicts a garden scene of flowers, butterflies and clouds covered in caps affixed with shiny screws which sparkle in the sunlight. “I didn’t think about the screw heads at the time, but they add a glimmery effect to the mural,” notes Michelle. It now hangs on an outside wall of the school’s multi-purpose room protected from the weather by the breezeway awning. A single, hand-painted line of text adorns it: Recycling is Beautiful. And it really is! Over the last school year, scores of students brought in bottle tops from home. They were then sorted into colors by Kindergarten through 3rd graders. Each huge sack of caps went home with Michelle for washing in her washing machine. 4th and 5th graders helped paint the mural background, based on a design created by Michelle. 6th graders affixed the colorful caps with a power drill. “I was worried about how difficult it might be for kids to handle using power drills to attach the caps. Some of those kids ended up being real pros at it.” Our Salon Offer’s these Services: • Haircuts with Styles Airbrush Our Salon Offers •These Services: Spray Tans • Schwartzkopf Color • Waxing • Haircuts with Styles • Unlimited Nail Designs • Makeup • •Keratin Acrylic & Gel • Makeup• Feathers/Bling Strings SchwartzkopfStraightening Color • Airbrush Spray•Tans Straightening • Special Occasion Updo’s • •Keratin Unlimited Nail Designs Feathers/Bling Strings •Waxing Acrylic & Gel • Special Occasion Up-do’s “I had a great time working on [the mural] with the kids,” remarks Michelle. “A handful of them really became invested in the project ... Mules pulled wagons filled with the basalt rocks from the “rock ranches” and workers loaded them into railroad cars. Goodwin Avenue was named after Rhode Island natives, James and Lydia Goodwin, The Goodwin's owned a furniture store in San Francisco and built a second home at 2386 Goodwin Avenue The 2,272 square foot home was built in the mid 1880's with an assessed value of $9,300. The farm produced eggs, wheat, oats, hay and apples, and was a chicken farm until the 1950's. The Goodwin home has architectural significance and was a candidate for the National Register of Historic Places. The beautiful home and barn still exist today. Our journey continues on Hatchery Road and today the hatchery building is the location of Jay Palm's saddle shop. W.E. (Bill) McCarter founded the hatchery in 1919 a year after the end of WWI. The hillsides were dotted with hundreds of chicken houses, some of them holding over 40,000 chickens, small by today's mass poultry processing houses, but they were raised free range and not confined in cages. These farms sent eggs to the hatchery by the thousands. The McCarter hatchery had a capacity to hatch 374,000 eggs “at a sitting” according to Penngrove historian, Ellen Harris. The hatchery was sold to W. Sam Smith in 1949. Before he opened the new hatchery, McCarter operated out of a small wooden building at 9555 Main Street That building was torn down in 1962. Can Do! A.J. bought the building that now houses the Penngrove Market in 1896. The building was constructed by W.A. Woodward's son-in-law, William P. Edwards when the railroad came through Penngrove in 1870. PENNGROVE PROUD 16 FALL 2011 Sweet Streets~ Let's hop back on our peripatetic magic carpet and proceed from Woodward Avenue back to Main Street where we'll make a right at the train tracks. At the first stop light you will look down and see the intersection of Adobe Road and Petaluma Hill Road. There Main Street becomes Petaluma Hill Road, which was once called the Petaluma-Santa Rosa Road and Adobe Road was called Sonoma-Bodega Road On the north east corner of this site the first commercial building in Penngrove, the Eagle Hotel, was erected in the mid 1850's. Travelers and stage coach drivers would stay at the hotel on their way to Santa Rosa. Unfortunately the hotel was torn down in 1951. Petaluma Hill Road is now commonly known as “Pet Hill Road”. Continued from page 13~ took over the building in 1896 and quickly enlarged it. Tony also became the station manager for the railroad and the local operator for the Sunset Telephone and Telegraph. The first post office was located in this building in 1882. He sold the business in 1911 to his brother, Charles. The building has housed either a mercantile exchange, hardware store or a grocery business from its inception. If you look down just past the Penngrove Market, you will see the railroad tracks and there on the right is Woodward Avenue The Woodwards came from Pennsylvania and purchased land amongst a group of oak trees. One of the legends surrounding the naming of Penngrove is that these oak groves put the “grove” in Penngrove, but other's say it was named after the Penn brothers, also from Pennsylvania, that had planted an unsuccessful “grove” of olive trees. Oak Street and Grove Street are also on the former land of the Woodward family. Their land encompassed the area from Adobe Road to Woodward Avenue to Main Street In 1870 Mr. Woodward donated the right of way to the railroad in exchange for his son-in-law, Mr. Edwards, being named the town's first railway station manager. Edwards built the earliest parts of the structure that today houses the Penngrove Market. The building later became the first post office in 1882 and the first postmaster was Stephan J. Solley. Edwards was the postmaster from 1894 to 1895. It was the hub of Penngrove life sheltering the first phone office, express office and the place to purchase railway tickets Farther down PHR, just a few blocks past Dutch Lane, we can see a little lane by the name of Formschlag. Formschlag Lane was named after the Formschlag brothers also from the Isle of Fohr. John Formschlag and his half brother, Antone Ronsheimer, bought 160 acres of farm land in Penngrove in 1865. They were joined by Antone's brother August in 1867. The Methodist Episcopal Church was constructed at Formschlag Lane and Petaluma Hill Road in 1898 on the land of James Elphick. Mrs. Hester Elphick was the Ladies Aid president for 20 years. In 1910 the church was moved to its present location on Oak Street by draught horses and is now known as the Penngrove Community Church. After the death of Charlemagne in 814 AD, the Frisians, as Continued on page 18~ Do you know What and Where this is ? Lichau Creek runs from its source at the Fairfield-Osborne Preserve through Penngrove and empties into the Petaluma River. I spoke with H.P.'s great-grandson, Ernest Phillip Lichau of Petaluma. According to Ernest, H.P. married an Englishwoman and they had two children, H.P. Jr. and Albert. Ernest H.P.'s great grandson, (Ernest won a Purple Heart on Okinawa in 1945), related a story that his grandfather told him as a child. H.P. took him to meet a “Dutchman” who did not speak English. His grandfather did not take a liking to the man. That knowingly they associated with a “known Dutchman” reinforces my theory about the origins of the Dutch Lane name. Now let's take our carpet ride north on Petaluma Hill Road until we come to Robert's Road. It is named after farmer Frank Roberts. The Roberts Ranch was among a handful of ranches, along with the Davis and Barnes (Ellen Harris's and Lee Brian's great grandfather) ranches, that supplied millions of cobblestones to San Francisco. The quarries were a major economic force in Penngrove employing over 200 men in the late 1870's. The Petaluma Argus reported that in 1894 Roberts sold 100,000 cobblestones to the San Francisco and Northern Pacific Railway. Let's fly south from Lichau Road over the elysian Penngrove farmland to Davis Lane. Henry Davis Sr. was a farmer and was one of a group of land owners that harvested rocks from quarries on their land. Today a dairy still runs on the land. Davis Lane is approached from Adobe Road on the South and East Railroad Avenue from the west It rolls and twists over a road that has an unusual “S” turn at the top of the hill just a few hundred yards before the Jones Family Dairy. Now we're back at Adobe Road and have completed our trip through the sweet streets of Penngrove. Thanks for flying Penngrove Air. The people of Fohr speak the Frisian language that is a recognized language in both Germany and the Netherlands. The island contains many windmills and dykes as well. One of the better known Frisians was Peter Stuyvesant the last Dutch Director-General of the Colony New Netherland now known as New York. With this information I am going to propose a theory (that I have not been able to document), but I'm confident that “Dutch Lane” originated from the Frisian community.
