Each person has a piece of beauty in their soul and for 30 year old Rodrigo Delpech, it’s “flair bartending”. Flair bartending is the practice of bartenders entertaining guests with the manipulation of bar tools and liquor tossing, flipping, catching, and of course fire ... For Rodrigo, flair bartending is so much more than just a past time, and it’s a life style. Rodrigo was born in Buenos Aires Argentina, and moved to the states about two years ago, with home currently being Fort Lauderdale Florida. Rodrigo started flair bartending when he was 15 years old, sneaking his brother’s bottles attempting to imitate his moves in their backyard. By the time he was 18, legally able to take part in flair bartending; he began taking it very seriously, practicing for hours every day. Rodrigo’s brother was someone he looked up to greatly and for his contributions, Rodrigo has 6 Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 become a world renowned competing flair bartender. Rodrigo has now competed in over 150 competitions and has won 70, 16 of them being world championships. He has also performed in over 20 different countries. Every child’s dream to travel the world came true for Rodrigo. We asked Rodrigo, what’s your best trick? He says “it’s hard to describe but if I have to name one, it’s Stall, (balance the bottle) on the forehead after I throw it behind my back... it’s one of my signature moves that gets the attention every time...” talk about fancy hand work. For now though, Rodrigo wishes to continue traveling to “see the world and new cultures.” Rodrigo hopes to see flair bartending grow and become more of a popular pursuit of bartenders and people everywhere. He wants the world to see that flair bartenders are more the just people pouring drinks behind a bar, they take part in creation and prowess. As Rodrigo told us “it’s more than just being drunk, it’s another way to entertain the guest in a bar, they see something fun while they are having a good time.” That’s what going out with friends is all about, is it not? Rodrigo has the right idea, Next time I go to a bar I hope to see some Flair Bartending, because as he’s made me see in life there’s more than just yourself, there’s the people around you as well, so why not enlighten them into a beautiful world even in the bar? Flair bartending is something I wasn’t aware of until being schooled by Rodrigo. He’s truly amazing, and what he does with a bottle is just as fantastic. I have to say it was a true pleasure getting to know him and understanding the masterpiece of tossing a bottle of vodka. Gettin’ Political Written By: James Carmack M edical Cannabis has been a very controversial issue for many years. The fight to get Cannabis legal in many states has had many people asking why it should be legal for medical purposes. Research has shown that Cannabis Treats Migraines, Slows Tumor Growth, Relieves Symptoms of Chronic Diseases, Prevents Alzheimer’s, Treats Glaucoma, Prevents Seizures, Helps with ADD and ADHD, Treats Multiple Sclerosis, Relieves PMS and helps those with Tourette’s and OCD. If passed cannabis, would be treating all these diseases along with a list of others that are currently under research. If legal it would place the “BIG PHAMACY COMPANIES” out of business. As a person with Multiple Sclerosis I would have spent over one million dollars in few years just to treat all the side effect of Multiple Sclerosis. I have switched to cannabis and no longer take pills. I feel much better because of it. So just think if everyone stopped taking all the medications that was prescribed how much money the Drug Companies would lose? They would lose Billions all because of a plant to legally get “HIGH” without understanding the makeup of medical cannabis. There are 2 types of cannabis; you have Indica which is high in CBD and Low in THC and Sativa which is high in THC and Low in CBD. Medical cannabis uses more Indica because of the High level of CBD a low level of THC. You get a lower feeling of being “HIGH” and more of the medical use out of the plant. The CBD side of the plant is the part that treats or works on most illness. that has been around for over 5000 years that has a vast multitude of uses. Just think of how nice it would be to wake up and either eat something with Cannabis in it, or a cannabis muscle rub or even maybe smoke some cannabis a few times a day, and no longer take the hand full of pills to get through the day? This is why the fight to get medical cannabis legal has become such a battle, it is all about money. Most people assume that medical cannabis is just a way for people Here in Florida we are unable to get the support needed to be placed on the ballot for 2012. In part because some feel that cannabis should be legal for everyone with or without a medical purpose. Granted people of all ages use cannabis for many reasons, but without the full support of the medical community within the State it will never pass. Many states have tried over the years and it has failed. Once groups have gone back with the support of the medical community it has passed or has been put on the ballot for the people to decide. This year there are 17 states that have been able to get it on the ballot a let the people decide. Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 7 Featured Artist Written by Christina Siegel “If you heard the shot......you weren’t the target” “You can run...but you will just die tired” A s one of Brevard’s hottest publication we try to cover every aspects of what Brevard has to offer. We are now putting the spot light on Brevard’s most excellent talented artist. We will be bringing you an explosion of everything your creative taste buds can handle. Our first featured and supreme artist is a legend of his time, and just an all-around outstanding person. Casey Gardner is a guy that wears many hats; he is a phenomenal local artist, musician, therapist and advertising consultant. Casey was born in Charlottesville, VA and has resided in Brevard for about 5 years now. In May, 2011, Casey graduated from FIT with a B.S. in Clinical Psychology. He currently works as a therapist for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as an advertising consultant. Wow, need we say more? Since graduating Casey has been steadily promoting his artwork under the banner “Boredom.Is.Overrated.” Why under the banner of Boredom is Over Rated one might ask? “It is just a motto I happen to live by; I’m always working on something and trying to better myself, even when resting”. Being a Star Wars fanatic and a huge movie buff, Casey seems to have such an interesting life and he still finds time to perform as a guitarist with the band 12 Steps Away, as well as his insightful art work. Mr. Gardner has always expressed himself with art. When he was eight years old, he was accidentally enrolled in the Beverley Street Studio Art School in Staunton, VA which you had to be 18 to enroll. Since then, Casey has painted throughout much of his life, often during times of a transitory stage. Which he has recently transformed into his own personal style, that’s easily recognizable with his ever present “drips,” his constant use of red, and his focus on people. Casey’s favorite and most challenging piece, that took months to perfect, is called “Her”. Like most of his newer works it’s not very large, but every morning he would get up and enhance it just a little bit more and think, “Alright, it’s finally done.” He said the next morning or evening he saw it; he would retract his earlier thought and improve it a little bit more until finally, he felt it was complete. He really feels he’s created something dynamic. Casey’s inspirations consist of many, but he has narrowed them down to his three most significant artists. He said, the first, being Andrew Wyeth, a prominent American painter who is a second generation artist, “I grew up staring at his dark, realistic, American settings.” Then, there is a ChineseAmerican named Hung Liu. She really inspired him to draw away from the completely realistic and to add touches of his own style into his work. Lastly, there is Christine Hiebert, who made him fall in love with blue tape. Casey currently shows his work at every Florida Artist and Musician’s League show at The 321 Local in Cocoa, and occasionally shows his work at FIT during art events, and is currently looking at getting his art into galleries. Check out Casey Gardner’s work and all of his new creations at his Website: www.boredomisoverrated.com. “Flying a flag does not make you a Patriot any more than buying a motorcycle makes you a biker” “Glow in the dark condoms...now you see it, now you don’t” “My homework brings all the Asians to the yard, and they’re like, ‘It wasn’t that Hard.’” "Name your Ipod Titanic, plug it in to your computer....‘Titanic is syncing’, Press cancel and feel like a Hero" By Adam Ramirez "I've got mine...I know me...I know my faults.. .I know my strong points...I also know with out trying things will never change. Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 13 14 Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 Photos by Robert Gray Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 15 As a comic, I often get asked interesting questions based solely on the expectation that I am going to have an outrageous answer. Some of these questions are simple, some complex, some of them are serious, some in jest, but I will try to answer them all. On my FB group page I asked for some of these questions and got several responses... I have decided to share them with you... the reading audience Here is the first question and my honest reply…. ENJOY! Dear Duncan, rt of going What is the most frightening pa on stage? -John Powers John, The most frightening part of going on stage for me is the few moments before I step on the stage until I grab the microphone. Everything before and after is why I do what I do. But I think those few moments have always been the scariest. If I had to make an analogy, I would say it’s like skydiving. I have known several jumpmasters, and they’ll tell you, no matter how many times they jump, they still get a little something in their gut just before they step out of the plane. Once I grab the mic, much like the stepping out of the plane…that’s it…its go time. No turning back, no second thoughts. Just be funny... The first couple of years my biggest fear was whether or not the audience was going to like me. It was like going on a blind date every time I got on stage. I would try to say the right things and do the right things. Sometimes it was good, other times it was a train wreck. It wasn’t always pretty. But much like going to the gym, the more I got on stage the stronger I became. So after I knew they liked me, my fear became the acceptance of my peers. I wanted to be original and funny. Unfortunately, no matter how original you are people are going to compare you to someone else. It’s all been done. So the originality comes from perspective and personality. There are a finite amount of topics that you can cover, but infinite points of view. So now, I just take a deep breath go on stage, and try not to try too hard!!! Duncan Jay can be seen at Cafe Unique in Cocoa Village, the fourth Thursday of every month performing with his improv group, AFTERNOON DELIGHT.... also on Twitter @FunDuncan and Facebook.com/funduncan 16 Brevard Party Scene • February 2012 Featured Band W hat have you missed this time? This past month at Sports Page in Satellite Beach was phenomenal explosion as musical talent took the stage. Their disposition was laid back for the Q&A, but as soon as they stepped on stage their passion soared with energy that pulsates right thru your blood, right down to your toes and then skanking prevailed. They have toured all over the world with some amazing artist. Their stories of past crazy shows you would never imagine just by talking to them. These guys are off the chain. On February 19th, they performed with Authority Zero. On tour from Riverside Cali, they represent a deep rooted cultural rhythm, with Latino roots and a masterfully blended Ska, with a twist of punk and a shock of rock not to mention a whole lot of enthusiasm. Frank, Eddie, and Jorge Casillas, three brothers with a multitude of talent and skills, with a passion for music and doing what they love, they built the foundation for this band and it has held them together for 24 strong years. Their name might come from a novelty glow in the dark skull necklace but this band is far from ordinary. Being one of the greatest out spoken punk band of all times, Voo Doo Glow Skulls have been taking the stage with legends such as the Mustard plug, The Angry Samoans, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Fire hose, Murphy’s Law and The Dickies, just to mention a few. They have been shocking panties off since their days spent playing in their parent’s garage. From South America, to London, Japan and they have even played naked at a festival in Italy. Yet one of their favorite places to play is right here in Florida in New Smyrna Beach. These guys have a knack for fun and a hunger for adventure. They have that laid back beach/surfer/ skater mentality. If they are not on the road bringing people out and about they are in Dogrun Studio, or they are chillaxing at Jorge’s skate shop, Vagrant. They relish in smoking the finest of herb and eating the best Thai food from around the globe. Voodoo Glow Skulls represent a vast collection of sponsors such as Fender guitars and amps, Dunlop Picks, Ernie Ball Strings, Vater Sticks, Paiste Symbols, Yamaha Drums, Evil Goods clothing and SILVER SURFER VAPORIZERS.
