CAMPUSPEAK // What’s Your Story?
1
Ten years ago, I was busy printing flyers and writing up text for a
website with 25 subpages. It was about one-way communication—putting
the basic information “out there” for customers searching for a product.
Now, technology has given us the opportunity to evolve into something
much more interactive. Today, it’s not simply about talking “to students.”
It’s about creating an ongoing, engaging discussion in 140 characters or
less. It’s about asking audiences what’s your story?
For us, that means some traditional communications like this catalog, but
it also means establishing a presence on Twitter (@CAMPUSPEAK) and
drawing hundreds of “fans” to our Facebook page, posting comments, their
experiences and ideas.
We have invested heavily in the development of our Interactive Workshops
Division—giving you new ways to engage students on critical topics in a
relaxed, discussion-oriented setting.
We are getting into the webinar business in a big way this year. That means
an affordable, highly interactive way to engage with our speakers and experts
on critical higher ed issues.
In January, we will unveil a cutting-edge website that brings us into a whole
new age of connectivity. You’ll be able to watch videos, engage in feedback
via discussion boards, and have a live chat with a staff member.
Many of our speakers are busy on social networking sites and writing blogs.
Speakers used to ask you to turn off your cell phones when they spoke, but
now some are asking you to Tweet during their programs, with live updates
behind them on a screen.
2009 // 2010 STAFF
We want you to talk back to us. Share your ideas, your feedback, your
random thoughts. You listen to us, and we’ll listen to you.

THE TOP THREE REASONS TO
BOOK WITH CAMPUSPEAK:
We are dedicated to a
low-maintenance philosophy
When you book a speaker with us,
you get all-inclusive prices
We work primarily within the higher education community,
serving all areas of student life including fraternity/sorority
life, residence life, leadership, athletics, student activities,
judicial affairs, student governments, program boards,
first-year experience, multicultural and diversity, and health
and wellness promotions.
Our speakers are knowledgeable,
competent, friendly & reasonably priced
People turn to CAMPUSPEAK
time and time again because we represent
the nation’s most outstanding college
speakers and because of our commitment
to excellent customer service. We pride
ourselves on being incredibly friendly and
customer-service oriented, and we are
committed to providing you an outstanding
experience. Our first priority is helping
you achieve your programming goals.
We promise to put your needs first.
Our reasonable prices always include
travel and hotel expenses, and our speakers
make all their own travel arrangements.
This is a lot easier for everyone. You’ll
know exactly what you will be spending
up front. The speakers like it because
they can plan their own travel. And we,
as the agency, prefer it because it means
less work tracking down receipts and
reimbursements. When you get a price
from us, you don’t get surprises later.
CAMPUSPEAK is the shizzle!
But seriously, their programs don’t
just educate. They encourage students
to think about the issues affecting them
and empower students to make
a difference on their campuses
and in their communities.
How do I book a date?
First, have a conversation with one of
our staff people. It helps if you know
some parameters for an appearance; for
example, you could say “We would like
a Tuesday or Wednesday in October.”
Once we have agreed on a possible
date, you check for room availability
on your campus and we check with the
speaker to be sure the date is OK. Once
everything is checked out, we send you
a simple contract via e-mail. You have
approximately two weeks to sign the contract
and return it to us. Overall, we try to keep
the process simple and straight-forward.
Why aren’t prices advertised on your
website or other promotional materials?
We don’t list prices because there are
numerous factors that affect the price
quoted on a particular speaker. Each
speaker has a base price that is all-inclusive
of travel and lodging costs, usually ranging
between $3,000 and $6,000. But, if you
are flexible on a date and choose one
during a time that a speaker is already in
your geographical area, the price might go
down. Also, the price can be affected by
how much you want a speaker to do during
a visit. A standard speaker visit is five hours
from stepping on campus to stepping off.
Some helpful tips about our speakers
Don’t be afraid to ask for more than
just one program, or to have speakers
meet with students either immediately
before or after the main program. We’ll
be honest with you and help you find
someone who meets your needs.
Our speakers are instructed to get in
contact with you either by phone or
email at least two weeks in advance of
their visit. This is a perfect opportunity
to decide on some last minute details.

Training, keynotes, workshops, retreats—students from more than
2,000 campuses have called on Rick Barnes to deliver powerful
messages in a practical, approachable style. Rick works hard to appeal
to students’ common sense and their basic desire to make the most of
their college experiences. Rick hits on critical issues facing students
today in keynotes that are always upbeat, realistic and honest. Visit our
website to read about his programs: Drink Think, Hazing: When Will It
End?, Lead Your Way to the Top!, Leading with Your Letters, Dying to be
Greek and Building the Whole Athlete. Rick also is widely recognized
as an expert on risk management and can do customized keynotes
or workshops for students or staff on that topic. Book Rick and you

fun, upbeat keynotes that help Greeks explore the role of values in their

most popular program, From Ritual to Reality, Mari Ann offers a truly
unique perspective on values, ritual and the responsibilities of being
a lifetime member. She talks with students, not at them, using music
to create a relaxing enviroment. As a past national president of an

alcohol, gender communication, greek life, leadership,

Ebert their 2007 “Speaker of the Year.” She has built a reputation as
one of the most upbeat, motivating speakers on the college circuit.
Students love her sense of humor, her casual speaking style and her
understanding of the realities of college life. She challenges audiences,
gets them laughing and gets them sharing. Whether she’s helping the
students understand the differences between the male and the female
brain in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Opposite Sex
or motivating your fraternity and sorority members to higher standards
in Making Greek Great, Lori makes students think and aspire to be
a stronger college community. She is also a great choice for alcohol
programs that reach beyond awareness and question the harms of
campus culture. Be sure to ask about her program A Few Too Many,
when you need an alcohol program that asks students the tough
questions that get them thinking about their own behaviors.

diversity, hate crimes, lgbt, multiculturalism, racism, social justice,
violence prevention // After 15 years as a neo-Nazi soldier and
recruiter, TJ Leyden experienced a profound change of heart, turned
away from hate and began teaching tolerance. How can a man who
covered his body in Nazi symbols become one of the nation’s most
compelling speakers on the importance of social justice and cultural
appreciation? In his remarkable program, Turning Away From Hate, TJ
tells his story and makes students understand how easily hatred and
prejudice can become a malevolent force in any community. The
passion and charisma that was once used to build the white supremacy
movement is now being channeled into a memorable lecture that
will deeply impact your campus. His book, Skinhead Confessions, is
available for those communities seeking a companion reading. Book
TJ if you are looking for an experience that draws attention from local
media. Your community will remember TJ years after he leaves your

billboards featured actresses and supermodels, this one, promoting
Dove brand products, promoted “real women with real curves,” and the
nation went wild. Suddenly, Stacy Nadeau emerged as a spokeswoman
for healthy body image on the Today Show, CNN, Ellen, Dr. Phil, Tyra
and Oprah (twice). Now in her keynote, Embracing Real Beauty, Stacy
speaks to men and women about the role they can play in changing the
message that young people receive about body image and beauty. Stacy

know what to expect when he walked on campus. He expected to be

never expected the intense hazing he endured during his first year on
campus to challenge his physical and mental well-being. His tormentors
had no idea of the “hidden harm” they were worsening with their
seemingly harmless fun. In Hazing: The Fallout, Travis shares the story of
the pain he brought to campus and how hazing intensified the damage of

a quarter of all young people in the United States will face a diagnosable

every college campus. Nearly all students will struggle with some mental
health issue—stress, lack of sleep, lack of life balance, eating issues,

// When the producers of Inside Edition wanted to do a segment on the
realities of sexual assault prevention on America’s campuses, they turned
to Steve Kardian, a New York police detective and a nationally recognized
authority on the issue. The resulting segment captured national attention
as Steve demonstrated how easily a strange man can be invited into a
woman’s vehicle on today’s campuses. Reduce the Odds is Steve’s program
for everyone, but especially reminds women to respect the gift of fear and
how to empower themselves within their campus community to reduce
or eliminate assault. He teaches the difference between a “hard” and a
“soft” target, helping women understand the perspective of a potential
assailant. Women leave feeling excited, empowered and better prepared to
discourage would-be attackers. Steve also offers a fun, interactive workshop
in which women learn hands-on, self-defense maneuvers.

greek life, hazing, risk management // In three months, two pledges
in Erle Morring’s Sigma Nu Fraternity chapter died. The fraternity
culture on his campus was so immersed in hazing and so troubled by
institutionalized alcohol abuse, he knew more deaths were imminent. The
lessons of that critical time in his life are the basis of Erle’s amazing and
impactful program, Hazed and Confused. He offers hope and possibility
to fraternity and sorority leaders facing an uphill battle in changing
their negative histories and traditions, and he validates the importance
of realistic alternatives to negative new member education. Erle openly
discusses the lineups, the visitations, the spotlight parties, the hotboxes, the
yelling and the intimidation he experienced as a new member and fought
to end as an IFC president. In passionately recalling the hazing and the
deaths of the two young men, Erle draws students into the experience that
forever changed his view of fraternity and the values of Greek Life.

information about the physical ramifications of drugs, alcohol and sex,

spiritual, social and intellectual impact of their relationships. It’s a
powerful “healthy emotional living” message, wonderful for new students

by her attacker, she then suffered at the hands of authorities who subjected
her to scrutiny, blame and additional victimization. The anguish of her

need to begin addressing damaging behavior by empowering those who
see a problem, want to do something, but don’t. “From alcohol abuse, to
hazing, to gossip and hate speech, students need to know that speaking
up or acting based on their values is the only real way to make the change
we need,” Mike said. He uses video segments from his award-winning
