SYNOPSIS
After an ill-timed and very public marriage proposal, fiercely independent
Sarah (Caplan) breaks up with her overeager boyfriend Kevin (Arend). Sarah
turns to her sister Beth (Brie) for support, but Beth is too busy obsessing over
the details of her own wedding to Kevin's band mate, Andrew (Starr). When
Sarah suddenly finds herself caught up in an intense rebound romance with
the adorable Jonathan (Webber), she is forced to examine her own fears of
commitment and vulnerability. With honesty, heart, and humor, all five
struggle with the trials, happiness, and pain of modern love. In the end Sarah
must decide - is it better to stay safely single or to risk it all on love?
Filmmaker Michael Mohan (ONE TOO MANY MORNINGS) returns to the Sundance Film Festival with a bittersweet screenplay he wrote with famed
graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown and co-writer Egan Reich. At turns funny, sad,
and sweet, SAVE THE DATE is a sincere story about the familial and romantic
bonds that form us all.
Interview with michael Mohan
INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL MOHAN
What is your connection to Jeffrey Brown?
Around the time I was getting married, I was searching for the perfect wedding gift. So I wrote
to our favorite graphic novelist, Jeffrey Brown, to see if he would draw something for us. I
didn't know him at all, but his email address was on the back cover of one of his books, so I
lobbed him an email. I had no idea if he’d write back, but he did and drew something truly
amazing.
The night before our wedding, at the rehearsal dinner, I noticed that my wife’s gift to me was
exactly the same size as mine. And as I started opening it, I couldn't believe my eyes when
the first peek of Jeffrey Brown's notorious black-pen-on-white drawing appeared. My wife
had, independently of me, written to Jeffrey and similarly commissioned a work for us.
It was baffling to us, and it was baffling to Jeffrey. When we called him on our honeymoon he
told us that he thought we might have been playing a prank on him. And so we commissioned a third work - a very meta piece of sorts, documenting the moment where we were
opening our gifts to each other (above).
I tell this story because it shows just how deeply connected I am to Jeffrey’s work.
How did you get involved with SAVE THE DATE?
I read an early draft of the script for SAVE THE DATE (which Jeffrey co-wrote with Egan Reich)
in 2006. I was taken by the characters and situations - the lead character Sarah acted in ways
I felt I knew. Right before Sundance 2010, having just finished my first film ONE TOO MANY
MORNINGS, I was trying to figure out what to do next. I heard through a mutual friend that
one of the producers, Jordan Horowitz, had been looking for a director for the project, and so
I sent him an email telling him that I'd love to be at the very bottom of the list of people to
consider for the film. We met briefly at Sundance, as he was there with THE KIDS ARE ALL
RIGHT, creative discussions ensued, and I was lucky enough to get everyone's blessing to go
off to re-write the script.
I took an extremely long time, primarily because I had sort of fallen into directing music
videos full time for Dangerbird Records. In an odd stroke of luck, I got laid off towards the
end of the year, and took a trip to Poland for the American Film Festival, where I was completely energized by the audiences there. They really care about independent film in Poland,
and so on my way back, I stopped by my parents’ house in rural Massachusetts, and canceled
my flight back to LA. I told myself that I wouldn't leave MA until I had a good draft of the
script to show.
I cooped up in my childhood bedroom trying to keep myself so tired that my internal critic
wouldn't get in the way, rewarding myself with internet breaks only for good conduct. Two
weeks later I had a draft, and booked my flight home.
In January, Jordan's film got nominated for a bunch of Oscars, and I had finished a short film
called EX-SEX that was lucky enough to play Sundance 2011. With this momentum we were
able to attract the rest of the talent involved in SAVE THE DATE and began shooting this past
July.
How did you cast SAVE THE DATE?
I reached out to a bunch of my favorite actors - Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Martin Starr, Geoffrey Arend, Mark Webber, Melonie Diaz, and Timothy Busfield. To me, these are all actors
who show an incredible amount of nuance in their work, but as a fan, I just wanted to see a
movie that had all those awesome people in it.
As we were working on the script, I had no idea who was going to play the role of Sarah.
That was because I didn’t know who Lizzy Caplan was. After tearing through all 20 episodes
of Party Down over the course of a couple days, I knew there was simply no other person that
could play this part. Lizzy is a rare actress who not only has an amazing mixture of strength
and vulnerability, she’s also just very down to earth and I think many women can completely
relate to her.
Likewise with Alison Brie, who is known more for her crazy character of Annie on Community, she brought such honesty and heart to this role. While Beth is absolutely driving people
crazy while she plans for her wedding, the character is not at all a bridezilla - you actually
completely feel for her. This is a real testament to Alison’s depth as an actor and also as a
human.
Tell us about your team:
People say that the only thing that matters is what ends up on the screen, and I totally
disagree with that. It's really important to me that the process of making films is just as
rewarding as the final product. Part of putting together this team is fostering an open environment where everyone feels like they can explore. That goes for the actors and for myself. To
me, the most important part of collaboration is not feeling judged. Because even terrible
ideas can lead to brilliant ideas as long as nobody feels stifled. In my experience, creativity
can only flourish when everyone feels comfortable with each other.
Many of the key crew are people I’ve been lucky to work with for years. My DP, Elisha Christian, was actually my roommate in college. And most everyone else has worked with me on
every single project from my first feature to now. Whenever new people were brought into
the fold, I think they could feel this tangible sense of community I’ve been able to slowly
foster over the life of my creative career.
Tell us about the themes of SAVE THE DATE:
Something my generation is dealing with is that half of our parents' marriages have crumbled.
And as we are entering long-term relationships, we're dealing with that - this grey cloud
hovers over us. As great as our relationships seem right now, there’s really only a 50% chance
it'll work out.
The sisters in SAVE THE DATE represent two ways we could look at it. For Sarah, Lizzy
Caplan's character, she's so stubbornly independent, that she doesn't believe in marriage at
all. And while she thinks she's so open-minded, it actually causes her to be much more
guarded and closed. And for Beth, Alison Brie's
character, she's engaged to be married and overwhelmed in a way that causes her to lose sight of
who she is and what's important to her.
Through these characters, the film explores two
things - the first is that love is absolutely terrifying
because it forces you to be in your most vulnerable
state, but as long as you don't change who you are,
you'll be fine. And the second is that this notion of
"the one" - as if there's literally only one other person
on this planet that's meant for you - that notion is
total bullshit, and we'll all be happier in our relationships (and our breakups) if we understand this.
It’s a really interesting time right now because I feel
like marriage is being redefined by our generation but as this happens we cannot lose sight of love. It’s
my hope that SAVE THE DATE will be a story that my
generation can relate to.
How would you describe the style of SAVE THE DATE?
While the themes of SAVE THE DATE are very modern, our style is classically cinematic. Our
two biggest influences were Woody Allen and Mike Nichols - two filmmakers who have very
naturalistic performances but still put the camera in beautiful places. Like their films, many of
our scenes are done in long, complex master shots. There’s one scene in our film where the
camera is literally across the street on a 290mm lens, just following the actors for two city
blocks.
We chose this style for two reasons. The first is that I just love that style of filmmaking
because it’s focused on character. Rarely do I see a film that is quickly edited and still feel
emotionally close to the action on screen. The second is to honor the work of Jeffrey Brown.
His books are known for their simplicity, and I wanted to absolutely remain truthful to that.
What’s your response when people call this film a romantic comedy?
It's not really a romantic comedy – that’s not to say there's not romance, or there's not
comedy. But the romantic comedy has come to mean something that this film just isn't.
When I think about romantic comedies, there’s a certain stigma attached to it. I think of
broad and unrealistic situations with cardboard characters. I think of female characters who
lead their lives as if they cannot be happy without finding a man.
While our film has elements of romantic comedy, it’s more than this. These two sisters talk to
each other the way sisters actually talk. The male characters are all loveable but flawed. The
sex scenes are sweaty and real. And the humor doesn’t come from elaborate, broad gags,
but rather from interactions between characters who you feel like you know.

book Clumsy in 2001. Since then he's drawn a dozen books for publishers including TopShelf,

LA.
Hrishikesh has released four albums as The One AM Radio. In a review, Pitchfork wrote that “his
