NOEL DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR AWARD PRESENTED Mr. Thomas Beazley, social studies department chair of Lebanon Catholic School, has been named the 2015 recipient of the Frederick F. Noel Distinguished Educator Award. He accepted the award from Bishop Ronald Gainer during the Diocese of Harrisburg Annual Education Conference event on September 16, 2015 at Bishop McDevitt High School. In recognition for excellence and contributions made in Catholic education, this annual award is given to those individuals who have a clear and integrated philosophy of education; been held in high regard by peers, students, and parents; have contributed significantly to the promotion of Christian values in the school; demonstrated qualities of service to the school, Church and community, and shown evidence of continual professional development. The award is entitled the Frederick F. Noel Distinguished Educator Award, in honor of the distinguished educator, Frederick F. Noel, who taught at York Catholic High School and subsequently serves as Assistant Superintendent for Special Program in the Secretariat for Education in the Diocese of Harrisburg from 1970 until his death in 1990. Tom Beazley started teaching at Lebanon Catholic in 1977 and has taught just about every grade level there. Currently, he teaches high school social studies and religion. Working for far less than he could earn in a public school is a sacrifice Beazley said he is willing to make because he enjoys being in an environment where everyone is working toward a common goal of providing an affordable Catholic education. “What keeps me at Lebanon Catholic are the people I work with and the families that support the school every year. They are just great,” Beazley said. “It is nice to work at a school where you believe in the same things, and you all have the same mission and goals for the kids.” “Tom’s dedication and love for the school has inspired and motivated me to push higher and harder to lead Lebanon Catholic School with the same dedication and devotion. He is truly deserving of this prestigious award,” stated Mrs. Rose Kury, Principal. In 2008, along with six other teachers in the Harrisburg Diocese, Mr. Beazley received the prestigious Golden Apple Award,an award which symbolizes a person’s professional excellence, leadership, commitment to Catholic values, and devotion to teaching in Catholic schools. Mr. Beazley has been married to his wife Mary for 37 years. They have six children and six grandchildren (with one on the way). He is a Mr. Beazley proudly shows off the latest addition to the “Beazley Brood”: Moira Ann Beazley Meindl, member of Saint Paul the Apostle Church and daughter of Eileen Beazley ’03 and Dr. Joerg Meindl. resides in Annville, PA. Dear Friends and Alumni of Lebanon Catholic School, In these last four years I have witnessed the overwhelming generosity of the LC alumni, and this continues to be evident as we move into my fifth year as the Principal of Lebanon Catholic School. You have shown incredible support by your donations of talent, time and treasure to Lebanon Catholic School. Through the hard work and dedication of our Advancement Team, Mrs. Lori Kostow and Mrs. Milissa Woodward ‘82, I am pleased to share that we have had a tremendous year that has translated to greater opportunities for our students and our school. We have increased our enrollment by 20%. We have not seen numbers such as these for some time. I am excited for the possibilities of things to come. This past year, we were able to raise money to support tuition assistance, technology, upgrade equipment and make repairs to the school building and grounds. We also have finalized the locker project we started several years ago. The school now is complete with all brand new lockers. I sincerely thank you for all who have supported our school’s programs this past year. Your contribution, whether it was to the general fund, tuition assistance, support of the athletic or music programs, large or small continues to benefit Lebanon Catholic School’s tradition of faith, education and service. Your caring makes a difference for our entire student body. Our graduating class felt your support as 94% of them went on to post-secondary education with over five hundred thousand dollars in scholarship offers. I firmly believe our graduates receive the best quality education given by our dedicated faculty. Through faith based instruction, our faculty and administration strive to give each student the confidence, discipline and fortitude that will carry them to greater opportunities for success. I am pleased to confirm the appointments of our new Board of Directors who were approved by Bishop Ronald Gainer this May. President- Mr. Lou Martarano, Vice-President-Mr. Michael Walsh ‘71, Treasurer-Mr. Thomas DeAngelis ‘71, Secretary-Mrs. Betsy Dorsey, and pastoral council, Father Michael Rothan and Father Job Foote. Each of these Board members has expertise and working experience in their positions as Board of Directors. They have agreed to dedicate their time and talents for the greater good of Lebanon Catholic School and thank the dear Lord for sending them to Lebanon Catholic School! Together with the faculty, students, parents and friends we will move this school to its full capacity. Wonderful doors of opportunity are opening up for Lebanon Catholic School. “The good works of the great things that are happening at our Alma Mater is spreading.” I look forward to seeing you at any one of the many events held at Lebanon Catholic School. Gratefully, Mrs. Rose Kury Principal 2 Lebanon Catholic School Lebanon Catholic School 3 School News A Letter from the Director of Advancement LC Students to Unveil a New, Uniformed Look After a thorough review of the previous uniform policy which stood in place for 25 years, Lebanon Catholic School is very excited to roll out its new and updated uniform structure. It unveils a fresh, cohesive look for this school year! In the fall of 2014, the Administration assembled a small uniform committee to review the status of the current uniform policy and determine whether updates were needed. The Administration met with parents, faculty and staff to determine what changes would be most beneficial to Lebanon Catholic School and its students. The major change to the current uniform structure is that students enrolled in 1st grade through 12th grade will be wearing a “unified-style”; therefore, no longer will there be “tiered uniforms” that were previously separated according to grade levels. A new color palette was also introduced that better Dear L.C. Alumni, Sister Maryann Szarek Retires After 26 years at LC fits the mission and uniqueness of the school. The committee desired an intentional, cohesive branding identity to effectively market our school community when children go on field trips so that people know that they are from Lebanon Catholic and proud to be LC students. By wearing their cohesive school colors and the school crest, they are enhancing school spirit. CLASS LEGACY GIFTS–CLASS OF 1965 & 2015 NEW COMPUTER CHAIRS: Mr. Fred LaPointe’s secondary computer students are fully enjoying the new computer task chairs which were made possible from the 50th Anniversary Class of 1965. PASTOR CHAIRS: Two of the five new pastor chairs were ready for the first Back-to-School Mass that was held on September 3, 2015. The beautiful wooden chairs with blue upholstery were made possible by the Class of 1979 in memory of their beloved classmate, Michael A. Edkin ‘79, who was a former altar server. NEW PODIUM: Together with the Class of 1965, the graduating class of 2015 presented the school a new, custom podium depicting the new school logo on the front as their senior legacy gift. The striking cherry podium will serve as a wonderful addition to all of the school’s Masses, presentations, and special occasions, like Baccalaureate and Commencement. FINAL PHASE OF NEW LOCKERS: Middle school students are thrilled with the new capacity of the single-tier blue lockers offering extra storage for school books and backpacks. The last 111 student lockers were installed over the summer. Only 30 sponsorships remain available. The locker sponsorship makes a wonderful memorial or way to pay tribute to a classmate or class reunion milestone. Cost is $100 for a single locker or $300 for a set of three. Sister Maryann Szarek began teaching social studies at Lebanon Catholic Junior-Senior High School in 1988. Students who reported to the first day of classes this August missed seeing her familiar face for the first time in almost three decades. Sister Maryann’s life has been a profound journey, full of special moments shared with lots of people along the way. In 1955, Sister Maryann answered the call to serve God right out of high school at the age of 17 and entered the Chestnut Hill Novitiate. She earned a master’s degree in education at West Chester University and spent most of her career working in the Catholic education system as a teacher. She was comfortable in any classroom setting from 4 year olds to young adults in the senior class. She retired as a full time teacher in 2001 and became a substitute teacher. On days when she didn’t fill in as a substitute, she worked in the main office of the school. Every year on the Feast Day of Saint Joseph, Sister Maryann would renew her vows in front of her students at Mass. It was a day that was very special to her and her students. Leaving the school was an emotional separation for her. Longtime faculty and staff members also felt the separation of her absence as the new school year began. Sister Maryann called the office on the first day of school to wish all the students a very good year, which was then relayed to all of the students by Mr. Beazley on the P.A. system for morning announcements. She has been a member of the Sisters of the Saint Joseph Convent for 50 years and has returned to the mother house in Germantown to enjoy her days in retirement. “Sister Maryann is well loved by all at Lebanon Catholic School - students, faculty and staff. Her presence is very much missed. We remember her favorite prayer of Serenity as she taught this to all her students. We wish Sister in her retirement rest, comfort, peace and joy,” shared Mrs. Rose Kury, Principal. Former students and staff are invited to send her well wishes to the following address: Sister Maryann Szarek Mt. Saint Joseph Convent 9701 Germantown Ave. Philadelphia, PA l9118-2694 Lebanon Catholic School We believe. It is with great faith and optimism that I share with you a glimpse of the wonders of God’s work in our midst at Lebanon Catholic School. As you turn the pages of this first edition of the newly revamped Assumption Hill Magazine, I encourage you to discover, or in some cases, rediscover, -those things that you hold dear in your heart of your personal connection to Lebanon Catholic – the Beacon on the Hill. There are three significant facets to our journey: where we came from, where we are and where we are going. We come from strong family roots anchored in the mission of Catholic education. LC has graduated thousands of young men and women whose lives were shaped by their experience on Assumption Hill and are now pillars in our Church, our families, our communities and around the world. In this issue, you will be introduced to individuals who give of themselves unconditionally so that others may benefit from a Catholic education at Lebanon Catholic School. Assumption Hill is sacred ground. We are moving forward with the commitment to spread the Good News of the Gospel everyday with our students. We wish to share with you in this issue our current stories of success. We are blessed to have a group of dedicated individuals who strive to make a difference. There are many recent accomplishments and some that are on the horizon, in which our administration, faculty, students and parents take much pride. “If you build it, he will come.” This celebrated and whispered line from the classic movie “Field of Dreams” guides our approach as we plan for the future. At Lebanon Catholic, we believe that we are a pen in the hand of God. We are prayerful that through our steadfast planning and faith, great things will happen. I hope you enjoy this new magazine format of Assumption Hill. Please send me ideas, articles and things you wish to share in this new forum. My email is [email protected]. Warmest regards, Lori A. Kostow Director of Advancement 5 Graduating Class of 2015 Commencement 2015 Jolie Conway Valedictorian As Nora Ephron once said, “Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead.” We stand here today, finally having completed our high school education- an education that has undoubtedly prepared us for the things to come. It has taken a lot of hard work to get where we all are today, but it was well worth it. We have performed our best in various roles in the dress rehearsal of our education, in order to be ready for everything the future holds for us. Even when we no longer roam these halls, we will never forget our journey through the stages of life as Lebanon Catholic students. In elementary school, the curtain rose on our educational careers. We donned school uniforms for the first time- costumes that officially designated us as students. We learned to read and write, and memorized our times tables. We learned our Hail Marys and Our Fathers, and celebrated our First Communions. We played games at recess and had fun doing all sorts of crafts. We helped each other and learned the value of teamwork. We went from being tiny little children in kindergarten to being the big kids of the elementary by 5th grade. Before we knew it, the curtain closed and we joined the supporting cast at school. The stage was set for middle school. We learned about geography and literature. We encountered letters of the alphabet in our math problems for the first time in algebra, and learned how to test our hypotheses through experimentation in science. At some point, everyone fell down the hill after outdoor gym class. We celebrated Confirmations, stayed busy, and began discovering more about ourselves as we went along. Soon, we even began to outgrow middle school, and we were ready to move on to our next performance at Lebanon Catholic. As high school students, we gradually took on numerous leading roles. We began as scrawny freshmen, and blossomed into the people that we are today. Mr. Beazley, Mrs. Travitz, and Mrs. Sanchez taught us how to write papers in MLA, APA and even Turabian styles. We learned how to use graphing calculators, thanks to Mrs. Shimko. We learned about various fields of science, and different time periods in history. We enjoyed Homecomings and Proms, and took countless selfies together. We learned how to drive, and were so excited when we finally earned our drivers’ licenses. We applied for our first jobs, and worked hard both in school and out. We joined all sorts of clubs, activities and teams according to our interests, which also helped to shape us into the people that we are today. And now, here we stand, rehearsed and prepared, on the brink of beginning the performance of our lives. Class of 2015- We’ve already had our last class, our last lunch in the cafeteria, our last final, and our last school-wide Mass. This may very well be the last time all of us ever stand in one room together. While we are ready for what the future holds for us, we can always look back at how far we’ve come, and think of the memories we hold dear to our hearts. Our education here at Lebanon Catholic has prepared us for life, as dress rehearsals prepare actors and actresses for chart-topping performances. This night is the final dress rehearsal for us, and tomorrow begins the performance of our lives. So let us stand tall, and embrace all the opportunities life has to offer us. Let us stay true to our faith, and make our Christianity known through our actions. Let us develop our talents to the fullest, and make our potentials become realities. The future is in our hands now, so let’s go out and have the greatest performance of our lives. 6 Lebanon Catholic School Confers Diplomas at 83rd Commencement Alexander Amerman Allison Brunelli Amy Buckley Troy Buckley Alyssa Colon Bradley Deimier John Groh Julia Jackson Annalia Kostow Monica Pastal Darius Ramos Dennis Reiley Marcus Rivera Ivan Willets Hayley Witmer Lebanon Catholic School Principal Rose Kury conferred diplomas to the 16 members of the Class of 2015 at the 83rd Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the school auditorium at Lebanon Catholic School. Prior to the Commencement Ceremony, at 10:00 a.m. the Lebanon Catholic School community gathered to celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass. The Baccalaureate Mass, a beautiful liturgical ceremony, was celebrated by Bishop Ronald Gainer and Reverend Michael W. Rothan, the school’s chaplain, in addition to numerous priests and deacons from the Lebanon deanery. The Mass was offered in thanksgiving for the blessings God has bestowed upon these graduates and their families. Students offered readings and special awards were presented by the administration and faculty. Our graduates and families find Baccalaureate to be a meaningful way to mark the beginning of graduation celebrations. The evening Commencement ceremony began with an invocation by Reverend Michael W. Rothan. Principal Rose Kury and Assistant Principal Cynthia Williams awarded diplomas to members of the Class of 2015. The culmination of the academic year, Commencement offers the entire Lebanon Catholic community an opportunity to celebrate the successes of our students. Commencement highlights included congratulatory remarks by Mrs. Livia Riley, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Dr. William Rakow, Class President of the Class of 1965, and Mrs. Jeanne Galassi Bonfanti ’65. Student addresses were given this year by Jolie Conway, valedictorian and Monica Pastal, salutatorian. JOLIE CONWAY graduated at the top as the Valedictorian for the Class of 2015. JOLIE CONWAY, is the daughter of Dr. Lisa Murko of Lebanon, PA. She served as the President of the National Honor Society, a member of Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and had lead roles in both of the school’s Spring Productions of the Sound of Music (2014) and of “The Music Man” (2015). She also was editor-in-chief of the Challenge. Jolie was awarded a commendation as a National Merit Finalist. She was a premier dancer with Movement Laboratory in Lebanon, PA. JOLIE CONWAY will continue her education at Temple University on a full academic scholarship with a major in pre-med. MONICA PASTAL graduated with top honors as Salutatorian for the Class of 2015. MONICA is the daughter of Michael and Rita Pastal of Lebanon, PA. She started her education in kindergarten and continued through twelfth grade at Lebanon Catholic School. Monica served as Secretary and Treasurer of the National Honor Society and was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). During her senior year, she served as cocaptain of the girls’ varsity basketball team, which championed their 17th District III Title in 2015. She played girls soccer, volley and softball. MONICA PASTAL will attend Penn State Harrisburg, majoring in nursing. As the Lebanon Catholic School Class of 2015 graduated on Assumption Hill, fifteen members of their graduating class who received diplomas will be attending colleges and universities, and one member will be pursuing a military career in the United States Marine Corps. The students combined will receive $209,520.00, a little less than a quarter of a million dollars, in academic scholarships as they continue their education. Lebanon Catholic School 7 Athletics LC GIRLS BASKETBALL GRABBED ITS 17TH DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE A Message from Father Michael Rothan Marktenfourteen That was our whole motto — ‘Finish the job.’” Much of what was accomplished in 2015 was due to the dedication of the girls’ team prior in 2014. It was those players who endured a 4-18 season struggling to keep the program alive because of a shortage of players. For seniors, Monica Pastal and Hayley Witmer, it was well worth the wait. Their fingerprints were all over the post season play in 2015. LC is hopeful this young and up-and-coming team will experience more amazing nights under the lights. This young team wants to “ smell chocolate” again in 2016! “The gift is given so completely, that it cannot be traced back to the fingers that gave it.” That quote is from Emmanuel Levinas, a Jewish philosopher who is speaking of what he called, “absolute gratuity.” Gratuity is something we give, usually as a tip for good service. When the gratuity is absolute, it is given with no expectation of return. This in part, is the inspiration behind our Mark 10:14 initiative at Lebanon Catholic. In the Gospel of Mark, chapter ten, verse fourteen and following, Jesus says:“Let the children come to Lebanon Catholic girls’ basketball returned to the scene of many past glories on the floor of the Giant Center in Hershey, PA this past March when the young, spry team captured its 17th District III Championship Title with a 40-20 win over Christian School of York. “I used a Winston Churchill quote, my ‘95 state championship team used it,” Hower said. “He said, ‘Give me the tools and I will finish the job.’ So I said, ‘We have the tools, but we need to finish the job.’ me and do not hinder them...” Having approached families about a Catholic education, it appears that the greatest hindrance is often financial, and yet we know people through our work and ministry, who have the means and resources to provide for a Catholic Education. Mark 10:14 puts these two pieces together. We are looking for individuals with the financial resources to “adopt” a family or a child and provide for them, in absolute gratuity, the gift they cannot give themselves. As a result the family or child who is adopted will be active members of their church; they will offer service, both at the church and school, as well as in the community; they will correspond with the anonymous donor to inform them of their activities and progress; and finally, and most importantly, they will do the very best they can with the gift they have received. Have you ever wanted to do something for someone but never had the opportunity? Have you ever wanted to give, but not for a building or endowment or capital fund? This initiative has already realized sixtyseven new students at Lebanon Catholic, with over $35,000.00 in donations with a promised $40,000.00 yet to come. Our enrollment is over three hundred, seventy-five students and climbing. Please prayerfully consider offering what you can toward this initiative not only to “let the children come,” but to provide a means for them to get there. Remembering Aaron Dear Alumni, Family and friends of Aaron Neubauer in conjunction with Lebanon Catholic School cordially invite you to the 1st Annual Aaron’s Music Festival on Saturday, October, 24th 2015 from 3pm to 10pm at the Saint Cecilia’s Parish Center on State Drive in Lebanon, PA. Two legendary bands from Lebanon will have you thoroughly entertained as they take you back to classic rock and Motown hits from the 70’s and 80’s. For your entertainment pleasure, the band Cheyenne, featuring LC’s alumna Jesse Hartman Pesta ‘81, will kick off the music festival at 3:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. Galbraith, Briody & Friends, featuring the singing talents of Bart Briody ’73, will close out the festival until 10pm. This event also has a deeper meaning and purpose, which is to memorialize one of LC’s own, Aaron Neubauer. Aaron was a graduate of 1997, who suddenly departed us earlier this year. Many of the elements of this event will focus on activities that brought Aaron happiness. Spending time with family and friends in a festive environment while celebrating and enjoying life was definitely on the top of Aaron’s to do list. Aaron embodied many characteristics which are hallmarks of a Lebanon Catholic education. Intelligence, integrity, hard work, loyalty, dedication and genuine enjoyment of time shared with family and friends are just some of the top shared values we all share. This event is designed to celebrate Aaron’s life by reconnecting with old friends while keeping the Lebanon Catholic sense of community alive and well, and of course, to have lots of fun! Proceeds from this event will memorialize Aaron’s legacy by bearing his name on the soon to be upgraded school fitness center located on the athletic field. The newly named, Aaron Neubauer Fitness Center, will get a much needed upgrade. Kyle Wamsher, Steve Olson, and Phil Olson from OutRAGEous Training Studio, located in Lebanon, PA, have offered to donate their time to guide Lebanon Catholic with this very important project. The newly remodeled fitness center will focus on the proud tradition of athletic excellence at Lebanon Catholic over the years by recalling past glory attained by the Beaver faithful throughout the years. Our hope is the next generation will be able to draw strength and inspiration to achieve greatness. Upgrades will include refurbishing old gym equipment, purchasing new gym equipment, installing rubber flooring, adding mirrored walls, landscaping, LED lighting, new heating system, high-insulated door with swing out capability, insulation, and an outdoor high intensity interval training area. Family and friends all agree Aaron would be very much in support of proceeds going to Lebanon Catholic fitness due to his love for sports and working out to stay fit. Advance tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased in the main office at LC until Lebanon Catholic School October 23rd. Tickets will $15.00 at the door. Delicious tailgate food items will be available at the concession stand for purchase. There will be a silent auction of over 40 theme baskets, door prizes, games of chance, and lawn games to add to the experience of the music festival. The LC Family is counting on you to make this a very special event. Sign yourself up and recruit some friends for a fun filled time while doing a lot of good for current and future students at our school. Let’s start an amazing tradition and grow this event together year after year. If you cannot attend, please consider a financial donation big or small. Corporate sponsorships are also available. A Jumbo Tron will be placed at the Music Festival for all to see promoting our sponsors. For more information, please contact Lori Kostow from Lebanon Catholic School at 717-273-3731, ext. 327. Like us on Facebook at Aarons Music Festival. We look forward to seeing everybody at this very special event. We thank-you for your time and consideration and look forward to whatever support you are able to provide. Sincerely, Christopher S. White ‘90, Daniel W. Rakow ‘90 John Groh ‘15 earns a spot on the WVU team John Groh with towel Despite the fact that LC no longer continues its rich history of football on Assumption Hill, John Groh’15, son of Bob and Kathy Kopecky Groh ’74 is living the dream as a Division I walk on for the West Virginia University Mountaineers- a big time football program in the Big 12. In late August, after much determination and fortitude, John earned his spot on the team from the weight room and to the practice field as a D1 defensive end and linebacker. 13 Class Reunion News Sister Eileen McGowan, DOM and Pamela Boyer Bergman reacquaint with one another after so many years. Dr. William Rakow, Mary Alice Tobias Wagner and Rose Hoke Witmer greet one another at the pre-commencement social. Patricia Gates Anderson and Jeanne Galassi Bonfanti break away from their conversation for a quick photo. Beloved classmate Patrick Magnin was the center of attention with his classmates. Lyrical Compositions from Class of 1948 Poetesses Link Life-Long Friendships For Lebanon Catholic High School, during the course of their sophomore year three young classmates from the Class of 1948, Doris Arnold Mikoni Bickel, Patricia Kirkessner Stann and Rose Marie Moore White, spent months perfecting the words and melody as they composed the Alma Mater in hopes of winning $50 in prize money offered by then principal, Father Robert J. Maher. The beautiful school hymn is filled with lyrics linking life-long friendships and school colors. For over 80 years it has been sung in reverence by former and current students- connecting the past with the future with the love and devotion to LCHS. The values and beliefs are passed down from generation to generation. Reflecting back, Doris Bickel chuckled, “We probably drove Patricia’s mother crazy as we tinkered on the piano on a daily basis back then.” There is resounding evidence of the love and reverence she and her classmates had (and still have) for Lebanon Catholic. She added, “There are many things come to mind when I hear the Alma Mater. It makes my heart sing because it reminds me that I went to such a wonderful school and that I helped write it. I received a wonderful education at Lebanon Catholic and I encourage all parents, if at all, to please send their children to Lebanon Catholic.” Her beautiful words once again linked those cherished friendships of the past in a poem she wrote to pay tribute to her beloved classmate, Monsignor Thomas J. Kujovksy ’48, who passed away in the spring of 2015. 30TH REUNION FOR THE CLASS OF 1985 The Class of 1985 Reunion Committee is pleased to announce the 30th Reunion on Saturday, October 3rd at Quittie Woods, located at 432 Grubb Avenue in North Lebanon Township. Alma Mater Into our book of memories More vivid as years go by The School that brought us happiness Lives on, and ne’er will die. Knowledge, prudence, fortitude, Are virtues of our school. Her colors true, Mary’s white and blue, Dear, Alma Mater. Never failing in spirit We stand for right. On her shines heavenly light, Lebanon Catholic School. Her noble doctrine and her truths Clear in our memories, Will always keep us close to you And guide us o’er life’s seas. Every classroom, corner, nook, Known to her children dear, Brings back old friends, On whom depends Memories of Catholic High. Monsignor Thomas J. Kujovsky 4.8.30 –3.28.15 Margaret A. Reilly, alumna from the LCHS Class of 1959, where she was a member of the women’s varsity basketball team, was best known by her classmates as “Magnes.” She became a health physicist who played a key role in Pennsylvania’s response to the 1979 Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear reactor accident, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at her home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was 73. Margaret was a certified health physicist who worked more than 30 years for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Radiation Protection (BRP). Maggie played a key role in the state’s immediate and long-term response to the TMI nuclear reactor accident in 1979. In fact, at a recent Penn State “TMI@35” symposium, several of the presenters mentioned her skill and “unique sense of humor” in their formal presentations. Just after the TMI event, she captured the lessons learned from the accident and noted, “When all else fails, consider intimidation” and “Keep a sense of humor.” It might be said she followed that last lesson all throughout her life. (Health Physics Society, 2015) LEBANON CATHOLIC RECEIVES DONATION OF PORTABLE AUDIOMETER FROM 1980 ALUMNA Thanks to a generous donation of a portable audiometer from a former graduate, students at Lebanon Catholic School will now receive audiologic care in a systematic and reliable fashion from Mrs. Mary Gruber, R.N., the school’s nurse. Dr. Linda GonyaHartman, a 1980 alumna from Lebanon Catholic School and owner of the Hearing and Ear Care Center of Mount Joy and Lebanon, PA donated the portable audiometer. The lack of available audiological equipment led the school to set a goal to provide a more comprehensive diagnostic program, and Dr. Hartman responded immediately. Until now, the school would obtain audiometers from the Lebanon School District to perform hearing screenings. His voice was so gentle his mind was on fire For he was such a priest with care and desire. Men saw the candlelight as it flickered through him It gave them the courage to hold sweet Jesus within. So take him dear Lord as your heavenly guest For his classmates knew this He loved you the best! KYM SA ZNOVA STRETNEME (SLOVAK: Until we meet again...) By: Doris Arnold Bickel CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2015 $10,000 Gold Rush Winners Remembering Margaret A. Dr. Gonya-Hartman has been in the audiology profession for more than 25 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Penn State University, a master's degree in audiology from Ohio State University, and a doctorate degree from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, School of Audiology. The event offered a casual and fun way to support the annual fundraiser. Over 200 guests were in attendance and were treated to live music from Galbriath, Briody & Friends. The diverse slew of musical talent revisited the best songs from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Only 400 tickets were sold at a first come first serve basis. Each ticket was sold for $50. Supporters of Catholic education have really advocated this fundraiser. This is an event where “everybody wins” and has continued to have a deep impact on financial assistance and technology for students Pre K-12th grade. Lebanon Catholic School 15 1400 Chestnut Street Lebanon, PA 717.273.3731 Mission Statement Lebanon Catholic is a ministry of the Lebanon Deanery of the Diocese of Harrisburg. We serve the diverse families of the Lebanon area. We provide a co-educational, spiritual learning environment for students in grades K4 to 12. We encourage our students to become life-long disciples and learners through an emphasis on service, prayer, worship and academic discipline. We share the mission of the Catholic Church to teach as Jesus taught. We prepare our students to be active participants in the Church and in society. Beliefs We believe: • At the heart of all Catholic Education, is the person and mission of Jesus Christ. • The primary model of life-long discipleship is the Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of our School. • The fullness of God’s revelation resides in the Catholic Church and must be taught to our students. • The dignity of each human life, in all its stages, must be valued and protected. • The parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith and our school works in partnership with them. • Life-long learning is best instilled in students through contact with those who are flexible, demanding, compassionate and Christ-like. • Community, cooperation and service are lived as well as taught.
