May 2015 Free TOM LONG’S POST The Monthly Newsletter of Minchinhampton Parish Council ANNUAL PARISH ASSEMBLY The Annual Assembly of the Parish of Minchinhampton will take place at The Hub, Tobacconist Road (next to the Youth Centre) on Monday May 11th 2015 at 7 pm. Residents and members of local organisations are invited to come along and hear of the achievements of the past year from a Minchinhampton Parish Council perspective. There will also be the first presentation of the new Jim Gregory memorial award for voluntary community service, and a crime prevention presentation from our local police officer Beth Coles. As in the past there will be an opportunity for groups and clubs to showcase their achievements by means of display boards for written accounts of their past year and the display of leaflets/brochures etc on the side tables. These accounts should be delivered to the Trap House (electronically via [email protected] if so desired) by 10 am on Wednesday, May 6th, 2015. It is hoped as many people as possible will be there. Light refreshments will be served at the end. REMEMBER THE COWS GO OUT FROM MAY 13TH _________________________________________ NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN AROUND THE WARDS: BOX Spectacular May blossom in Box is the photographic feature for this month. A community meeting is planned to outline to everyone the pros and cons of Minchinhampton Parish undertaking a Neighbourhood Development Plan. It is hoped the session will be at Minchinhampton Community Library on either Monday 1st or Monday June 8th 2015, starting at 7.30 pm. The idea of hosting the meeting came from the NDP Working Group of Minchinhampton Parish Council and was ratified by the full meeting of the council at the end of April. A representative of the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council had offered to attend to present information about the likely process, costs, etc so the council and community can take an informed decision about whether to proceed with as plan. As Tom Long’s Post went to press the council was still trying to firm up arrangements. The definite date will be publicised locally as soon as possible. Minchinhampton Parish Council. Serving the Local Community 250 ACTS OF KINDNESS The five areas are listed below alongside a brief explanation of the fifty acts of kindness which took place. - 50 acts of kindness to 50 nearest homes to church. This involved delivering Hobbs cakes to 50 homes nearest to church. - 50 acts of kindness to the clients of Specially 4 U (a monthly church activity for adults with learning difficulties and their carers). This involved delivering flowers and boxes of chocolates to each one of the adults who come to Specially 4U. - 50 acts of kindness to Horsfall House, Minchinhampton. This involved delivering 50 bunches of daffodils to Horsfall House and spending time with the residents. Minchinhampton Baptist Church has now celebrated it’s 250th anniversary. It’s been a joyous time for all involved with celebrations for people both past and present of the MBC congregation. Everyone involved agrees that the greatest joy has come from being able to bless others in our community with our 250 acts of kindness. This came to a conclusion on Saturday morning when 50 boxes of Hobbs House brownies were delivered to the 50 homes nearest to the church. Here’s a reminder of what those acts were: The ‘250 acts’ are split to bless five areas of the community. - 50 acts of kindness to residents of George Pearce House, Minchinhampton - delivering hampers and spending time with those who live in George Pearce House. - 50 acts of kindness to doctors at the Minchinhampton Surgery, teachers at Minchinhampton Primary school and all local traders. This involved delivering 50 fresh cups of coffee and cake to the GPs, teachers and local traders in Minchinhampton. We now have an amazing set of photos of delivering these acts of kindness and the weekend of celebrations. These are all held on our Facebook page. Please let me know if help needed to access. Peter Farley Working for Amberley, Box, Brimscombe and Minchinhampton SHARED OWNERSHIP Stroud District Council is working in partnership with Lovell Homes to develop a number of new homes to be sold on a part-buy, part-rent basis in Minchinhampton. Purchasing a home on the open market is currently very expensive hence these properties are intended to assist families to stay local despite the high property values. The arrangement at The Paddocks and Old Common works with the purchaser buying a share of the property and renting the remainder, enabling local people with a small deposit, lower income or limited mortgage to buy a family home. MARKET HOUSE CONSULTATION POTHOLES NEW LIFE FOR OLD SCHOOL A homes developer presented his ideas for the former Amberley Ridge School to the most recent Minchinhampton Parish Council Meeting. Mr Martin Evans said his company Colburn Homes had gained the contract from Gloucestershire County Council, subject to planning, to purchase the former school site overlooking the common. Mr Evans, who lives in Minchinhampton, is the managing director and owner of Colburn which is based in Cirencester. Previously the company was responsible for the Old George redevelopment in Nailsworth, he told the meeting at The Trap House. To report potholes in the road complainants should telephone 08000 514 514. Gloucestershire County Councillor for Minchinhampton Stan Waddington has advised people to ring this number directly themselves. This is because they will then be issued with an incident number to enable them to chase and track the future repair. (The number goes through to Amey, who are the Gloucestershire County Council highway contractors). Colburn’s proposals are for the conversion of the existing Victorian building into five residential units, limited new build on the site of the large extension and temporary classroom, and also a replacement dwelling on the site of the headmaster’s house. There would be no more than 10 dwellings in total. A pre-application had been made to the Stroud District Council local planning authority and Mr Evans said his proposals were in line with SDC’s recommendations. Congratulations too to the U8s, County Cup runners up in their first year, and to the U11s who won the Plate final. A great day for the club with plenty of silverware for the soon to be built clubhouse. Alastair Mylechreest COUNCIL SUPPORTS BOX WOODS PURCHASE MINCHINHAMPTON RFC U10s In wind and rain Minch travelled to Dursley for finals day to face Stow for the second time in three years in a County Cup semi-final. They started strongly, Jacob Lee and Ioan Jones running well. Jack Ordway-Hughes and Wilf Mylechreest tackled fearlessly and both teams went into the break scoreless. Minch kept up the territorial pressure and were unlucky not to take the lead from a charge by Jonny McLaughlan. Soon after Ruari Fryer was well held up over the line but from the restart, McLaughlan barged over to take the lead. Heroic defence by Taner Alpan, Jack Blore and James Harwanko kept Stow back and a drive in the dying seconds was held up as the whistle went. Minchinhampton Parish Council has supported the Box Village Society’s bid to buy Box Wood so that there can be public access in perpetuity. At its April meeting the councillors agreed in principle to allocate £12,670 “Section 106” benefit money to the woods purchase project. The money was originally allocated for “improvement or provision of public open space” locally after the development of housing at Barcelona Farm. Previously it was earmarked for possible community orchard and new allotments schemes, but since those have, for various reasons, not materialised the council was asked by Stroud District Council if it would decide a new project or projects to which the funds might be diverted. The council therefore voted in favour of supporting the woods project, provided the purchase went ahead after an important meeting between the sellers and the Box Village Society on May 1st, 2015. The allocation of the money is also only until the end of 2015, to allow time for Minch faced St Brendans Old Boys in the final and started the society to raise the rest of the funds required. confidently.
