November 2015 Airstream Newsletter - WBCCI Idaho Unit
WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL REGION 10 ! NOVEMBER 2015 Idaho Unit of WBCCI A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT …and this month’s word is “seriously”! In case any of you were concerned about my pictures each month, and had started wondering, “Is Michael taking this (WBCCI and the Idaho Unit) seriously enough?” Truth be told; I do prefer the fun part of WBCCI, the new family/friends, rallies and caravans! My latest Airstream acquisition is the book Wanderlust, Airstream at 75 by Russ Banham (available at store.airstream.com). A cross between a coffee table book and history/reference manual of Wally Byam and Airstream, where it started, where it went and where it is today. I have learned before there were caravans and WBCCI, Wally spent 21+ years building trailers and working seriously at staying in business. The more I read about Wally Byam and his struggles to bring to the marketplace the product we enjoy today, my admiration for the man is growing greater than my admiration for the produc5 Our next Unit Rally is not scheduled until April of next year, but that doesn’t mean things are slowing down. With the cooler weather some members are moving south, the rest of us should have winterized our trailers by now, the Harvest Dinner on November 14th, fall Board meeting, breakfast each month and more planning for next year’s rallies. Is anyone up for a rally in McCall during Winter Carnival January 30/31, seriously? Rather than a wobbly rally, I think this could be a slippery rally. Other things to think about for the new year; the Oregon unit has asked about either having a joint rally with the Idaho unit, or maybe participating in the Pendleton RoundUp rally next year. We have been approached for the past several years about taking over the Sun Valley Jazz Festival rally, and we are hearing there is interest in developing more of a relationship with the Airstream Dealers in Spokane and Salt Lake. If any of these “opportunities” sound interesting to you, let me or one of the Executive board know, we will probably let you run with it. And that’s not all!!!! We still need a couple of volunteers for rallies next year; June and September are open. Check with Marilyn Collins if you are willing, or have an idea for a rally. Seriously, we need some rally coordinators to step forward. This month we are recognizing our Treasurer/Budget Committee lead Earl Brace. Earl has given over 10 years of faithful service as our Treasurer/Budget committee lead. Once again one of those roles within the Unit, that is not an elected position, but critical to the on-going function of every Idaho Unit event. In addition to paying the bills, Earl plays a critical role in getting all our memberships renewed each year. Hint, hint ! If you haven’t sent in your renewal yet, it’s time to make that happen. Seriously, I don’t think I’m taking this just do it now while you are thinking about it, thanks! See you down the road...Michael Archer president thing too seriously, do you? August 19-21, 2017 Plan to attend the Solar Eclipse Rally (totality occurs mid-morning on Monday, April 21st) WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL REGION 10 ! NOVEMBER 2015 New Member Introductions from Steve & Joan Brinton, Salt Lake City, UT: Thank you for the welcome. We spent a few days with Jay & Debbie Rolls who live in Brigham City, Utah at an Idaho rally for some Utah Airstreamers at the Mountain Valley RV Park in Heber City, Utah. We had a great time! After that small rally we decided to join and hopefully will be able to come to some of your events. We live in SLC and travel several times a year primarily to Island Park, but Idaho has so much to offer we need to venture out. We are headed to Sun Valley for the Jazz Festival in a few weeks but are staying in the lodge. We plan on stopping by to meet a few of the Airstreamers who will be attending. Should be fun. MEMBERSHIP NOTES Nineteen new families joined the WBCCI Idaho Unit since January 2015! Several families joined because Airstream Adventures NW paid for the first year when they bought their Airstream. Some joined because they heard that WBCCI membership offers exploration, friendship, and support. Two families recently transferred from at-large membership to our unit, thanks in part to the September rally in Utah. Welcome to you all! New members are very important for Unit growth; renewing membership is critical for Unit stability. At last count, 42 (of 79) families have renewed and are ready for 2016. Our dues remain $80 ($65 for International and $15 for the Unit). Please take a moment to fill out this year’s renewal form (found in October’s newsletter). It takes a bit longer than usual because WBCCI HQ is asking you to verify your information. The 2016 Rally Schedule will be published soon. We will have a variety of rallies, including a celebration of the Unit’s 55th birthday in May. We are also planning a short caravan to Kalispell, MT in July. (A hint: when they are published, pencil the rally dates on your calendar.) We look forward to seeing you - for breakfasts &/or rallies. If you have questions about membership or are unable to renew, please let me know. October Rally Re-Cap NOVEMBER 2015 by Betty Burke One could not have ordered be0er weather for the Family, Fun, and Fishing rally held at Snake River RV Resort in Homedale. With dayAme temperatures in the low 80s and evenings pleasant out-‐of-‐doors acAviAes were unhampered. Ten rigs rolled in Friday as did a surprise guest, Carol OrAz who was on her way to Ketchum for the Sun Valley Music FesAval and rally. Friday’s meal of kabobs was prepared on the resort’s massive grill. Aside of the fly invasion, the meal was enjoyed, desserts shared, while a0endees shared their latest adventures. At dusk the Falks set up their projector and computer to project the movie, The Long, Long Trailer. Many laughs were heard as viewers enjoyed the mis-‐adventures of novice trailer travelers (Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball). Saturday had a leisurely start, with a0endees took walks, slept in, took pictures, or went fishing. Then it was off to Ste. Chapelle Winery for a tour. We were amazed to learn that the winery bo0les nearly 200,000 cases annually. Following lunch it was Ame for more free Ame to visit, nap, or fish. Mid aWernoon craWs were started. Stephanie Falk and daughters set out miniature pumpkins for painAng and materials to create acorn creatures. Several people spent an hour decoraAng pumpkins with designs of varied themes. As creaAons were drying games were started for all, but children took greatest interest. They competed to move Ski0les with a straw, build the tallest structure using marshmallows and spagheX, and digging gummy worms out of a plate full of whipped cream with only their mouths. It was messy but a lot of fun for the kids as well as those watching their efforts. Saturday evening we went to the Tango Saloon for dinner. We sat around two incredible handmade tables visiAng and watching the BSU game on two TVs. Dinners were ordered and enjoyed. AWer returning to the resort the Falks again set up their audio-‐visual equipment. The evening’s entertainment was vintage movies of Airstream caravans around the world, Capetown to Cairo, as well as a few more. Sunday started with a potluck breakfast and more visiAng. AWer clearing away breakfast many gathered around Charlie Burke for a maintenance seminar. Of parAcular interest was informaAon on how to maintain, service, and operate ZipDee awnings. Unfortunately, all but the Voigts and Burkes had to return home. The visiAng conAnued over a shared Sunday dinner and breakfast at the Orchard House Monday. 4! NOVEMBER 2015 Columbia River Gorge-Portland Caravan Re-Cap by Maureen Ostyn Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge, one of the most scenic areas of North America, is just 78 miles long and a mere 1 ½ hour drive on I-84. Jerry & Linda Settle, familiar with the dramatic views from the Old Historic Highway and the quaint cities bordering it, planned a much slower, leisurely pace. They organized the two- week long caravan for late September. Fourteen Units were on board---eight from Idaho, five from California, and one from Virginia. This mixed group of personalities enhanced our adventures and provided new insights and opportunities. The following list highlights some of the outstanding activities planned for this caravan: ! Dining, always a favorite with the Wallies, at choice locations including Pendleton’s WildHorse Casino, Hood River, Multnomah Falls, and Portland’s Francis Xavier Restaurant ! Traveling by rail, through the famous “ fruit loop” orchards and hills to the small community of Parkdale, nestled near the foot of Mt. Hood ! Journeying on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers aboard a paddle wheel boat and the Downtown Lunch Cruise on the Portland Spirit ! Driving the lower Old Historic Highway into The Dalles to visit the Discovery Center and Museum ! Sightseeing the upper Old Historic Highway from Portland with stops at Crown Point, the Vista House, and several, spectacular waterfalls, including the 620 ft Multnomah Falls Jerry and Linda included several YOYO ((You’re On Your Own) options so that members could explore their individual interests. A couple of Californians took to trails by way of a tandem bike. Some seasoned walkers made new discoveries hiking with Earl. Others visited nearby hydroelectric dams, the Sage Center, which is an agricultural museum, and WAAAM, an air & auto museum. One group spent a whole day at the Fabric Depot which housed over “1 ½ acres of fabrics,” notions, quilting, and craft items. An Ikea store, located within minutes of our Portland campsite, became a point of interest for several people; some returning a second time. One YOYO Friday afternoon, some Californian members suggested dining at the Historic Columbia Gorge Hotel, promising to secure a reservation. Within three hours, we were escorted into a spacious, private dining room overlooking the Columbia River. Spontaneity (and a quick response) has its own reward! It was a delightful evening. Each caravan has a distinct character and essence depending on the expectations, locale, and makeup of participants. This was particularly noteworthy on this adventure. We were a diverse group ranging from newbies to experienced caravaners. We were Idahoans, Californians, and Virginians with distinct personalities, several shared occupations, and various backgrounds. There was an informal “flamingo club” and a seminar on the care & maintenance of Zip Dee awnings. One member volunteered as historian, documenting all our activities with her photographic and technological skills. Connections such as these, made through shared interests at gatherings and events, broadened into friendships. Often such friendships can become enduring. A great example of this took place on this caravan. Richard and Jackie Mount drove more than an hour from Washington to join the Settles, Tom Bain, and Ostyns on an enjoyable, day-long outing, riding the MAX Light Rail through Portland. We met them for the first time at the 2013 Autumn with the Anasazi Caravan. They joined it as buddies; we met them in Portland as friends--- one of the joys of being members of a caravan! 7!
