THE CHILDREN`S IBD CENTER AT MOUNT SINAI
Spring is in the Air...

THE CHILDREN’S
IBD CENTER AT
MOUNT SINAI
n this newsletter we are happy to share the art work of
some of the children and teens who are followed at the
Children’s IBD Center at Mount Sinai. Coming to the
hospital for an appointment, test or admission can be a
difficult experience for families. One parent shares with us how they make
coming into the city for a check up quite an adventure. The next lecture offered by the Center will be given by Dr. Keith Benkov, on 5/1/07 at 5:00pm
in The Zone, 1184 Fifth Avenue when he will present ‘Alternative Treatment
in IBD’. We look forward to seeing you there.
Art Work from our Patients
SPRING 2007
Making the
Most of the City
By Sarah Philion
U
nfortunately, two years ago
our four year old son was
diagnosed with ulcerative
colitis. Fortunately we found
Dr. Benkov and the staff at Mt. Sinai
Medical Center. He is now six, and
doing well, but it is still necessary to
visit the hospital at least a couple of
times each year. We live in a small
college town about three hours from
New York City, four hours if we take
the train. Our first couple of visits
were day trips. Needless to say we
came home exhausted and somewhat crabby. Although it’s not inexpensive, we decided it was worth it
for us to travel to the city either the
day before our scheduled appointment, or stay one night after the appointment, to take advantage of all
the city has to offer.
For example, on one recent
excursion to the Big Apple we visited
the Museum of Natural History, and
last November we attended the
Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at
Rockefeller Center. You don’t always
have to spend money to have a good
time. We love to just walk the streets
of NY, visit with friends and family
who live there, find our way around
using the subway and do business
with the corner hot dog or bagel vendors. On our next trip we are planning to visit the Bronx Zoo.

Making the most of the City continued...
Through trial and error we’ve
also found a very nice hotel that offers reasonable rates most of the
time, and it’s easy to drive to. The
Bentley is located just off FDR Drive
at 59th Street, parking is free and it’s
a short 10 minute subway ride up to
Mt. Sinai.
These side trips help ease
the burden of a trip to the hospital
and the accompanying stress and
waiting time that inevitably go with it.
We always try to make the trip an
adventure for the whole family rather
than something we dread. Even if
you can’t do it every time you visit,
New York is a great big, fun city with
lots to do. You might as well make
the most of it.
While staying in the city may
not be for everyone, there certainly
are lots of activities close by!
