Nearly 500 athletes, coaches and community members came together for the 2nd Annual Brookings Area FCA Breakfast of Champions on Thursday, August 9th at the Brookings Swiftel Center. This year’s breakfast was headlined by former Nebraska Head football Coach Tom Osborne. Rick Nielsen, SD FCA’s Event’s Manager lent his years of stage experience serving as this year’s Master of Ceremonies. Those in attendance were also blessed to hear from a handful of others. Mayor Tim Reed, who welcomed the audience and shared about the importance of community service. South Dakota FCA Director Keith Moore shared about his heart for FCA and seeing FCA continue to make a difference all across the state. Jackrabbit Defensive Back Winston Wright shared his Christian faith and how it’s impacted him as a college athlete. The former Husker then took the stage and delighted the crowd with memories of his coaching days, tying in how his faith in Christ has been foundational to his life not only on the field, but off it, in his time as Nebraska congressman and as the Huskers Athletic Director. As we finish up this newsletter, news is breaking of Coach Osborne’s retirement as the AD in Lincoln. On behalf of all of us at FCA around the state we wish him a happy retirement and hope he finds some great fishing holes to enjoy! Who will have as our next speaker? We’re not ready to make any announcements yet, but be sure we will be bringing more great speakers to our Brookings area. “We are excited to see how the Breakfast event has grown from year 1 to year 2. It’s a great opportunity for us to bring in quality individuals from the world of sport to our community.” said www.BrookingsAreaFCA.org “Haven’t I commanded you be strong and courageous? One of FCA’s 4 Core Values is Excellence, I ran across the following story I hope encourages you. The order from the head teacher was abrupt: “’The classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.” Young Booker T. Washington knew this was his chance. He swept the room three times, and then dusted the furniture four times. When the head teacher came back to evaluate his work, she inspected the floor closely and then used her handkerchief to rub the woodwork around the walls, the table, and the students’ benches. When she could not find one speck of dust anywhere in the room, she said quietly, “I guess you will do to enter this institution.” Cleaning a classroom was nothing less than Booker T. Washington’s entrance examination to Hampton Institute in Virginia. In later years, he would recall this as a turning point in his life. He wrote in his autobiography , Up from Slavery, “I have passed several examinations since then, but I have always felt this was the best one I ever passed.” Slacking off, goofing off, and dozing off rarely open the doors of opportunity. Those doors are opened best by a consistently excellent effort. Give the world an effort of that caliber today. “I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work You gave Me to do.” -John 17:4 Our local FCA is fully supported by partners like you (individuals/businesses/churches).
