A Message from Mother Vanessa~
Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry
A Word to the Church
November 2, 2015
God came among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to show us
the Way. He came to show us the Way to life, the Way to love. He
came to show us the Way beyond what often can be the nightmares of
our own devisings and into the dream of God’s intending. That’s why,
when Jesus called his first followers he did it with the simple words
“Follow me.”

Follow me and love will show you how to become more than you ever
dreamed you could be. Follow me and I will help you change the
world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends.
Jesus came and started a movement and we are the Episcopal branch
of the Jesus movement.

Near the end of Matthew’s Gospel story of the Resurrection of Jesus
from the dead, Mary Magdalene and some of the women go to the
tomb to anoint his body. When they get there they find that the tomb is
empty, the stone has been rolled away and there is no body there.
Then they see and hear an angel who says to them, “This Jesus of
Nazareth whom you seek, he is not here, he has been raised as he
said he would be and he has now gone ahead of you to Galilee. There
you will see him. It is in Galilee that the Risen Lord will be found and
seen for he has gone ahead of us.”
Worship Schedule 8
“Follow me,” he said, “and I will make you fish for people.”
Galilee. Which is a way of talking about the world.
Galilee. In the streets of the city.
Galilee. In our rural communities.
Galilee in our hospitals. Galilee in our office places. Galilee where
God’s children live and dwell there.
In Galilee you will meet the living Christ for He has already gone
ahead of you.
A few years ago I was in a coffee shop in Raleigh, North Carolina, just
a few blocks away from our Diocesan House there. While in line I
started a conversation with a gentleman who turned out to be a Mennonite pastor. He had been sent to Raleigh to organize a church in the
community on the streets without walls. As we were talking over our
coffee, he said something to me that I have not forgotten.

Presiding Bishop—Continued...
He said the Mennonite community asked him to do this because they believed that in this environment in which we live, the church can no longer wait for its congregation to come to it, the
church must go where the congregation is.
Now is our time to go. To go into the world to share the good news of God and Jesus Christ.
To go into the world and help to be agents and instruments of God’s reconciliation. To go into
the world, let the world know that there is a God who loves us, a God who will not let us go,
and that that love can set us all free.
This is the Jesus Movement, and we are The Episcopal Church, the Episcopal branch of Jesus’ movement in this world.
God bless you, and keep the faith.
A Heartfelt THANK YOU to my church family
for providing a heartfelt and meaningful
funeral service for Dick.
I am truly blessed.

Congratulations to Ruth Ann Beckwith who was the Easter
candy jar guessing winner! She guessed the jar contained
80 chocolate eggs and the actual number was 77. She won
an adult coloring book in addition to the candy.
Reminder:
Christian Formation classes will begin the summer hiatus on
the Sunday prior to Memorial Day—May 22nd. Look for upcoming editions of the St. James Newsletter for the fall restart dates and class offerings!

Soup to Service Fundraiser Scheduled~~
On June 25th 2016, The Soup to Service Committee of St. James Episcopal Church will
be holding a fundraiser evening. The purpose of the evening is raise funds for the renovation of the kitchen facilities . St James, along with your church volunteers, have been
feeding the less fortunate for the past 30 years. Unfortunately, the kitchen has not kept
up with the times and as a result is in desperate need of a complete make over. To that
end, the committee has been raising money to accomplish that goal. During the fundraiser evening, we will be raffling off a Handmade Tie Quilt and some other baskets being donated by our partners. We also will be providing updates on our progress and
hopefully an approximate timeline for the kitchen renovation. The Fundraiser
Evening is being held at the St. John Party Center 7575 Bellflower
Road in Mentor, Ohio. The evening ticket price is $40 per person.
Tie Raffle!!
The Tie Quilt tickets are $5 each or 5 for $ 20 . The Quilt also comes
with a display rack . If you have any questions or would like additional
tickets, please call the St James church office at 440-354-3526.
Financial Message from Our Treasurer—Darrell Knapp
At the Annual Mee ng we examined, discussed and accepted a budget that would support our parish life.
Based on pledge cards, predictable offerings and Founda on alloca on, this financial plan allows us to meet
our 2016 financial obliga ons while implemen ng several cost savings proposals. We were also prayerful
that we would be able to recover the shor&all from 2015. I am pleased that through the first three months
many of the cost savings plans made a posi ve difference, however our giving has lagged behind parishioner
pledges. Through March, we collected $42,000 which, unfortunately, is $4,000 short.
I am confident that God will provide us opportuni es to meet our needs, but it can be challenging to recognize and take those opportuni es when presented. I ask you to pray and keep vigilant for opportuni es in
your personal life and in our corporate life together as a church family to reap what God has wai ng for St
James. Have you seen God at work in your life and are you thankful for his presence? Do you want to pay it
forward? Maybe suppor ng St James ministries in our community is a way to do that? Do you see ways for
St. James to perform our ministries in more effec ve and efficient ways? Maybe sharing them is what God is
asking you to do. The opportuni es are boundless. All we need to do is to stop, listen to God, listen to each
other and together St James will con nue to thrive and be the face of God to the Painesville community.
Remember this: “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap
generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all
mes, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” — 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

An Update from Mother Vanessa
Mission Statement: We are a Christian community of the Episcopal Tradition, growing in Jesus Christ.
We strive to hold in our hearts and actions the spiritual and physical welfare of others in Christ's name.
We are committed in faith to live this out through worship, education, ecumenical ministry and service
to others in th e nam e of ou r Lord and Savior Jesu s Ch rist.
Last month I introduced the new process of discernment the Vestry and I used to lay out lines of contact
between Vestry members and active ministry groups. Our goal is to reframe the concept of ministry from
compartmentalized groups, to interdependent members of a living body (1 Corinthians 12:4-15). Soon a
visual representation of our interwoven Ministry Area groups will be available in the Narthex, on our website and published here.
As with any new process, we had bumps. The word “Hospitality” was used in place of “Fellowship” which
left Ellen Laitinen wondering if “Fellowship” had been disbanded. Obviously, not our intention. That
name has been corrected. Some groups don’t have a set chair to connect with a Vestry liaison and some
ministries don’t have an active group. We are a living community, so things shift and progress.
The list, as intended, generated new ideas. Sally Hewis asked how pastoral care lay ministries might receive more institutional support. That needs fresh imagination and energy. Other changes are in italics.
What opportunities to serve the Jesus Movement of love, justice and mercy did you notice?
We are a parish with a dynamic mission to grow in Jesus Christ. Let’s sink our roots into the existing life
of the parish and reach out in new growth, blooming by the grace of God to accomplish the mission of
the Church universal, “to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. (BCP 855)”
See you on Sunday, Mother Vanessa +

Bowling Party On Sunday, April 24, over thirty bowlers,
young and not-so-young, newbies and experienced alike, gathered at Scores Fun Center in Painesville Township for a Family
Bowling Party. Much to Steve Laitinen’s surprise, Ellen brought
dozens of festive cupcakes and party treats for all in celebration
of Steve’s birthday, and everyone (including those not even in
our St. James group!) joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Steve. It was a
great evening of food, fun, and fellowship – with a little bit of bowling “rolled” in
for good measure. Thanks, Paula! This event was a “SCORE!”

“Contemplations” by Linda McConnell
As I’m writing this, spring songbird migration is starting. All sorts of beautiful, colorful
birds will be passing through this area on their way to their summer homes up north.
They migrate at night, and city lights often confuse them. Every so often, one of them
will enter the glassed-in stairwell of the parking garage where I work and get trapped
inside. Poor things. It’s always frustrating and heartbreaking to watch a frightened and
exhausted bird frantically dashing itself against the glass in a futile effort to get out. It’s
hard to catch these birds, but I always try. They can't see their way to freedom. If only I
could get them to understand that I’m trying to help them! If they would only come to me,
I would gently carry them outside and set them free.
I was thinking about this today and realized that God must feel like that with us, sometimes. Sometimes things go wrong in our lives and we get upset. We feel trapped. We get frantic and angry and
scared, and we forget where our safety lies, and He must stand there just wishing we would come to
Him for help. I imagine Him thinking, “Poor things. If only they would trust Me. If only they knew I’m
trying to help them. Why won’t they come to Me?”
When things go wrong, it can be easy to forget that God is with us. It happens to me all the time. I
lose sight of Him and then I become just like a trapped bird, fluttering blindly around, flying away from
the One who truly does love me and wants to help me. I hope that every time I see a bird now, I'll be
reminded of the lesson He gave me today.
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often
have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you
were not willing!” Luke 13:34 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
Let us be willing!

Child Art
The Sunday School teacher asked her class to draw a picture of their favorite Bible story. One little boy drew a picture of four people on an airplane. "That's very nice," she said to him, "but what
is it about?"
"That's the flight to Egypt." said the little boy.
"Oh, I see. That's Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. But who is the fourth person?"
"That's Pontius the Pilot."
