In this issue of Bengalooru Katha we decided to pay our homage to
the 'Jamai's of Bengal, Bengalooru boys who picked their brides of
Bengal origin. We picked two well-known names, from two
glamorous fields, films and cricket. For the first piece in this series
we decided to meet up with EAS Prasanna, one among the famed
spinner trio of Indian Cricket in the 60's married to Sheima.
Erapalli Anatharao Srinivas Prasanna, or simply Prasanna to all
cricket lovers, has been part of the dreaded Indian spin trio for years
along with Bishen Singh Bedi and Bhagwat Chandrsekhar. Prasanna
played his debut test at Madras against England in 1961. He left
cricket to finish his engineering degree, returning to the game only in
1967. Since then he has been spinning his remarkable spinning story
with 2 ten-wicket innings and ten five-wicket winnings in 49 test
matches. Happily married to Sheima and he has a daughter,
Sagorika.
Himadri Nandi (Managing Director, MRO-TEK Ltd), Bijon
Majumder of Bengalooru Katha (BK) had a little chat with this
cricketing legend and a worthy son-in-law of Bengal.
BK: Welcome to Bengalooru Katha. It is rare privilege, talking to a
legend like you. Let me start by asking how is your involvement with
cricket these days?
EASP:Till recently I was very much involved with ICL..sharing my
experiences and also officiating as Match Referee in all the
tournaments conducted by ICL.
BK: Can you take us back in time and tell us how did you develop
your love for cricket?
EASP: It looks to me that sport was in my blood,because in
whatever sport I ventured I excelled right from school days.During
one of these many exercises my passion for cricket developed.
BK : Did you ever think of leaving cricket and follow a career in
engineering?
EASP: No,the circumstances where such at that time it never
permitted anybody to pursue sport as a profession as there was no
monitary benefits and it was along the principles of
amatuerism.Therefore I carried sport along with my engineering.
BK: What has been the most memorable match in your long career?
If you can single out one.
EASP: Single handedly I was instrumental for the country to registr
the very first overseas series win agnst New Zealand by caputuring

BK: Leaving cricket aside for a moment, tell us about how you met
Sheima-di. Was she interested in cricket?
EASP:It is quiet apparent that it was destiny that I should marry
Sheima,since accidently she was dragged to Eden gardens to watch
a match by her brother between East Zone and South Zone,One
can visualise in a crowd of lakhs I spoted this beautiful bengali girl as
they say the rest is all history.No Sheima had no knowledge or
interest in cricket or sports.
BK: How has she taken your frequent absence from home with all
that touring? Or did she travel with you often?
EASP: Sheima did not travel with me and it was quiet a sacrifice
from her end to stay back while I travelled.Especially in a city
Bangalore which was new to her.
BK: And your daughter Sagorika, is she interested in any sport?
EASP: Shagorika is a health freak very into hoilistic physical
activities like Yoga and also takes interest in many sports in
particular tennis.
BK: How do you spend your time these days? What else interests
you outside of cricket?
EASP: These days since I have been reinstated in the BCCI,I'm
looking forward for an assignment where I can share my experienc
and develope spinner's for the country. I keep indulging in a round of
Golf now and then. Also getting myself totally involved in taking
care of my pets and wild life.
BK: Weakness for any Bengali food? As a Bengali I cannot resist
asking this question.
EASP: Inspite me being brahmin from south I love Bengali food
even more than my wife Sheima, And fish is my forte.
BK: Thank you so much. It has been wonderful talking with you.

It is a time for coming together, of reunion and rejuvenation, and last but not the least, the
season to love, to share and to care.
Durga Puja is celebrated in a grand way in Karnataka state. In Mysore, Dussehra is easily the
most popular festival. Elephants are decked up with robes and jewellery and taken in
processions through the streets of the city. Mysore is named after Mahishasur, the very demon
who was slain by the Goddess.. There are also temples dedicated to the demon king and even a
gigantic statue of the demon in the city.
We have great pleasure to inform you that, this year too Members of Jayamahal Sarbajanin
Durga Charitable Samity have come together to celebrate Durgotsav in a remarkable way at

There is an urgent need to

I still remember being completely surprised seeing an ad in 1985 in
'The Statesman' that TI will setup a centre in India and is looking to
hire fresh graduates. I was in the Final year of B.Tech at IIT
Kharagpur then. We were all excited because till then our
exposure to TI was only through the databooks in our labs!
Dr. Biswadip Mitra, better known as Bobby Mitra was
designated President and Managing Director of Texas
Instruments India recently. In his new role, Dr. Mitra will lead all
of TI's research and development, sales and marketing activities
in India. Dr. Mitra holds a B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical
Communication Engineering and a Ph.D in Computer Science
and Engineering, both from IIT Kharagpur. He also holds an
Executive Masters of Business Administration from The
University of Texas at Austin. Himadri Nandi (Managing
Director,MRO-TEK Ltd) of Bengalooru Katha caught up with him
to have this little chat.
HN: Welcome to Bengalooru Katha. We are all so proud of your
achievement. Tell us, was research a passion from your IIT days?
BM: I have always been a firm believer that technology can play
a pivotal role in India's growth. We talk about physical
infrastructure today. But if India is to transition from being an
emerging economy today to an emerged economy in the future,
it needs to include technology infrastructure as its foundation.
Driving this has been my passion because technology can really
impact the lives of hundreds of millions of people in our country.
Take wireless/telecom, energy, healthcare, education, security
the opportunity to impact lives through technology is immense.
Technology can make our world greener, healthier, safer and
more fun!
HN: Since you have done your graduation and PhD from IIT,
Kharagpur, and have worked many years in US, with people from
foreign universities, how would you compare the universities
here and those abroad, when it comes to equipping people for
new developments?
BM: The intrinsic quality of many of our Universities is truly
world-class. I have been very impressed with some of the
innovations in leading Indian Universities. For example, we are
collaborating at TI today with IIT Kharagpur on absolutely
leading-edge research for early detection of breast cancer and
oral cancer.
However, we do have a gap in the number of researchers with a
Ph.D in India. We must find a way to have 100 more over the next
5 years.
HN: Texas Instruments was one of the first transnational
technology companies, leveraging Indian talent for research and
product innovation. Twenty-four years later, would you say the
company's faith in India has been vindicated?
BM: Absolutely! When TI came to India in 1985, we were the first
transnational technology company. We had no historical data or
current data from peer companies to base our plans on. But the
Twenty four years later, TI engineers from India have filed over 650
U.S patents one of the highest amongst technology companies in
India. Several innovative products for Wireless Handsets and
Infrastructure, Medical, Video and Imaging, Energy etc. have been
developed by our teams here.
Today TI is also very excited about India as a key growth market.
We are working closely with our customers in India who are the
electronic system design and manufacturing companies. By
providing them strong sales and application support, we are
focused at making them successful in their markets.
HN: What is your reading of the current downturn in the IT exports
from India? Do you think we will go back to the boom time of the
last decade? If not, what needs to be done by the Indian IT industry
to strengthen its international presence?
BM: We need to think differently. The recipe for success in the
future will likely be different from that in the past. For example,
companies need to also look for increased global opportunities in
some future growth vectors such as energy, healthcare etc.
Software companies can look into spaces such as Embedded
Systems where opportunities are growing with the increased
content of electronics in most end equipment.
In terms of business model, there needs to be increased focus on
value delivery to global customers through system level
innovation. This must be coupled with manufacturing
competitiveness, efficient supply chain and logistics. This
combination would lead to a sustainable non-linear scaling of
revenues. Emerging economies around the world also offer an
important growth opportunity in addition to traditional markets.
HN: Moving outside the work sphere a little, what do you find the
best and the worst aspects of living in Bangalore?
BM: I love Bangalore. It is an unqualified love. Yes, there are days
and moments when I feel frustrated about something or the other.
But isn't that a reality anywhere? Let us accept that no place in the
world is perfect, and enjoy the many positives that our city offers.
HN: With your intense work pressure and frequent traveling, how
do you unwind?
BM: I spend quality time with my wife Basundhara, our 14-year old
son Subhodeep and 8-year old daughter Ankita. There is no better
way to unwind than spending a relaxing evening with family.
HN: Thank you. It's been great talking to you. Wish you greater

leadership had a vision of how critical a role India can play for TI in
the future.
The humans haven't yet learnt the art of appreciating or learning
to cope with frugality as much as they do with plenty. On the other
hand they strive and find several ways to possess more, at any
cost. This human instinct coupled with the invention of refined
tools is the starting point for environmental degradation.
Agriculture, it is said, is the first stage in the process of such a
degeneration when man started chopping forests for growing food
crops. And this has continued even today. Thousands of hectares of
rainforests in Latin America and other countries are being felled
and land converted to grow Soyabean to feed the meat industry
elsewhere. Many of these precious forests are the treasure trove of
biomass, sources of energy, drinking water and irrigation potential.
More than anything they put millions of tones of oxygen into the
atmosphere and also mitigate global warming. The rich biodiversity, the legacy of this planet, which has contributed
enormously to the survival of animal kingdom, is perilously
endangered.
There has been a great amount of discussion and debate in the last
decade over the subject of environmental degradation such as
rising air pollution, water contamination and deterioration of soil
condition, and, most of these are attributed to the increase in
human population, industrial expansion and human greed. Is it not
possible to find ways to address these issues, is a big question.
How, at a time when the world is paralyzed by economic downturn,
can we think of containing industrial and economic activities? The
rising demands of the risingpopulations will certainly
make it difficult to reverse the pattern of consumption that the
world has set. Added to it is the process of urbanization which is
putting enormous pressure on our ecosytem
s.Our cities and towns produce more g a r b a g
e, more water contamination and pollute air, c o m p
ared to the rural areas.
Look at Bangalore. We have lost 30 sq km of
forest in the last two decades which has affected
our rainfall, vegetation and the microclimate. The
lakes have vanished and the groundwater tables have
rapidly fallen. Now the only source of water for
Bangaloreans is the river Cauvery and the water has
to come to the city over a distance of 120km.We are
eight million people today in Bangalore depending on
one source and if the rains fail we don't know where to
go for water. Besides we have to share water with
Tamilnadu and so many other cities like Mandya,
Mysore, Chamrajnagar, Coorg also look for the same
source for their needs.
There is an urgent need to think and rethink the way
we live and do things. We need to save and use water
judiciously because it's going to be terribly scarce. We have limited
sources of energy, too. There is an urgent need to tap energy from
new and alternate sources like wind, solar and biomass. Of all the
things we need to shun ostentation of any kind. It's not only vulgar
but it's crime when millions go without food in our country.
Get our children to know more about the environment for it's they
who will have to face the future created by us. We say money can
buy anything so make more money. When there will be no water,
and only polluted air and famished soil but plenty of money, what
shall we survive on? Money?

Bond between Karnataka and Bengal
Intermingling of the peoples of the land areas known today as
Karnataka and Bengal can be traced to almost a thousand years.
Vikramaditya IV, son of the Chalukya king Someshwara led an army
in conquest in the territories of mediaeval Bengal in 1068 AD.
Several Kshatriya families who were a part of that militia chose not
to return to their native homes and settled down in Bengal. The Sen
and the Burman dynasties of Bengal are said to have emerged from
amongst these military migrants from Karnataka. But instead of
delving into the hazy past and for the sake of greater credibility we
shall restrict the scope of this discussion to some eminent
Bengalees and trace some of the memorable events of their lives
which have been adequately chronicled in the pages of history.
Very close affinity between Bengal and Karnataka has been forged
through the institution of Ramakrishna Mission founded by Swami
Vivekananda in 1897. Swami Ramkrishnananda, one of the direct
disciples of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, established the
Bangalore Unit of the Mission on Bull Temple Road in 1906. The
centre at Mysore was inaugurated in the early twenties. Several
stalwarts of the Ramakrishna order made trips to Bangalore and
Mysore.
In March 1911, Holy Mother Srimati Sarada Devi, the consort of
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa visited Bangalore. To be precise she
stayed in Bangalore between Friday, March 24 and Monday, March
27. She blessed large gatherings of devotees ranging from the
Dewan of Mysore to persons of humble origin. She also initiated
among others Narayana Iyengar and his family members and
Rajagopal Naidu. Much against the then prevailing orthodoxy she
also granted initiation to persons belonging to the Adimoolam
community (Scheduled Caste)

Calcutta: Seat of Scientific Research
in Early Twenteeth Century
In 1957 Calcutta university was established mainly with the task of
conducting examinations. Very little research work used to be
undertaken at that time at Calcutta university, however a nucleus of
research in 'Science' specially modern Physics started under the
leadership & guidance of sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. Around the same
time a visionary sir Ashutosh Mukherjee joined as vice chancellor of
Calcutta university, with his initiative & strong desire serious research
started at Calcutta university. He soon invited other young notable
scientists like C.V. Raman, Satyendranath Bose, Meghnand Saha etc to
join C.U & take up research in addition to teaching.
Around the same time J.C.Bose initiated his pioneering research on
wireless communication, which is the keyword of present day
communication & information technology. It is not known to many
people in India that Bose first developed the source for 'millimeter
wave' generation, Bose was at least half a century ahead of his
time. He was the first person to attempt communication using
electromagnetic waves in the radio wave, microwave& millimeter
wave. In 1887 German physicist hertz developed and built an
instrument for generation of electromagnetic wave that was
theoretically formulated by 'Maxwell' in the middle of nineteenth
century. Visible light is also electromagnetic wave covering a limited
length of spectrum. But the electromagnetic wave of Maxwell
covers a very wide range of wave length and has the same
property of light wave. Basic properties of light like rectilinear
propagation, reflection, refraction etc. Remain the same in the entire
region of electromagnetic wave extending from gamma rays
of very small wave length to radio waves of very large
wavelength. The wave generated by Hertz's instrument
produced waves in the radio frequency region having wave
length of the order of few meters. So some properties of
light could not be verified by Hertz's instrument. After the
death of Hertz, Bose made significant improvements in the
instrument to generate waves of wavelength of the order of
few millimeters. He also developed an instrument based on a
crystal called 'galena' for sensing the wave. He could prove
that the electromagnetic wave generated has all the
properties of light. This was a great achievement since it
proved Maxwell's electromagnetic theory on experimental
basis. His remarkable achievement, specially in physics, was
to demonstrate that electromagnetic waves had energy to
penetrate solid walls of room and can reach a sensor placed
in the next room. In 1894 he conducted the experiment when
the waves originated from the room of Acharya P.C.Ray and
penetrated the wall and was received in the next room . This was
the first success of wireless telegraphy. The public
demonstration of the same experiment was conducted in 1895 at
the 'town hall' in presence of the then governor of West Bengal. It
was also given wide publicity by the press. It also appeared in
the book” Hertzian waves and wireless telegraphy” by Poincare and
also in the proceedings of the royal society in the period 18951900. The invention was found in the patents issued in U.K &
USA. Thus Bose's public demonstration of wireless telegraphy
was much ahed of 'Marconi' who succeeded in transmitting the
radio waves across The Atlantic.
Another great son of bengal; Acharya P.C.Ray, a contemporary of
sir J.C.Bose, had produced a deep impression in his dual
capacity as pathfinder & originator of work of utmost utility.
During his life he had not only made important contributions in
advancement of science but had also evoked a spirit of
scientific research in his discipiles. He was one of the first to
realise the importance of Indian
industries for economic
advancement of the country. With this object in view he risked
the very little he possed; and started 'Bengal Chemical' in a
modest way which has grown into a very successful chemical
industry in the whole of India.
Professor Sisir Kumar Mitra, few decades later, did pioneering
research in the field of upper atmosphere and Radio Physics. He
was immensely influenced by the discovery of generation of
electromagnetic wave and its receiver by J.C.Bose. Mitra started
working on ionosphere that reflects the radio waves in the
atmosphere. He established an ionosphere field station at
Haringhata under the university of Calcutta.
We can therefore comment that the nucleus formed with the
initiative of Sir J.C.Bose & Acharya P.C.Ray towards the end of
19th Century flurished during 20th Century and slowly the desire
for research spread to other states of India. In Calcutta during
the same period few more research institution like IACS (Indian
Association for Cultivation of Science), ISI (Indian Statistical
Institute) etc. were formed. Some more research institutes, e.g.
TIFR, ISRO, BARC, IIT's etc both before & after Independence , were
established with active initiative & support from government. Well
directed & planned efforts from all sides India quickly poised to be
considered as a developed nation from developing Nation.

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, in his renowned work, 'History of
Hindu Chemistry' had made a prophetic statement. India was at the
height of learning from 5th. Century B.C. to 5th. Century A.D.
thousands of students used to gather at our ancient universities of
Taxila, Nalanda, Vikramshila, Ballavi, Odantapuri and others from
various countries for pursuits of knowledge at various branches of
arts & sciences. Why then suddenly the downfall started? According
to P.C.Ray, it was because of two reasons. Firstly, sankara's
mayavad, which brought about a tremendous damage to the growth
of rational and scientific knowledge and thinking. Secondly, it was
the seperation between manual and intellectual workers.
Manual workers comprised the artisans and craftsmen of our
society. They were our potters, carpenters, weavers, smiths and other
technicians. Whenever they faced any problem, particularly in
production techniques, they had no access to the then scientists and
technologists for any guidance. It was barred by the Brahmin sect
of the society. Stagnation and decline naturally followed from both
sides.

transition is seen even in the
evolution of the human kind initiated
by natural disaster or the basic
adaptation processes.
In retrospect Mr. Paresh Hazra
always felt that he had to be a part of
such processes of evolution, learning
to live in various new cities coming
from a village with an allusion to a perhaps bright future. Having taken his
first steps in the twentieth century he made his way to the twenty-first
through an intense amount of dedication to innovative work. He has been
through many ups and downs in this journey called life and has savoured
every bit whether good or bad to the fullest.
Born to a humble farmer's family in a village called Khanyadihi tucked
away in a lesser-known pocket of West Bengal, he ran away to Kolkata
filled with the essence of wet-earth aspiring to be the best he could. With
this basic idea he enrolled himself to the creative world of art at
Government College of Art and Craft Kolkata, experiences from where
has come to be a huge part of the person and the artist he is today.
Post education he shifted to the south of India taking up a job as an art
teacher at a residential public school in Bangalore. Along with his work as
a teacher he immersed himself in creating art in every possible form and
dimension while he traveled in India and around the world. His exposure
to various societies got him in touch with some remarkably talented and
passionate individuals who helped him further to enhance and achieve his
creative pursuits.
His work is also largely influenced by folk songs, lives of simple tribal
people and their folk motifs.
Dwelling in the creative ambiance, time and again he has also stepped
into voicing his opinion against social injustice through his paintings and
documentaries.
During his visits to Europe he has always taken ample time off to observe
the originals of the great masters like Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo
da Vinci, Constable, Turner, Picasso, Salvardor Dali and so on, visiting
museums are a large part of my visits too. Trips to America have brought
him closer to the contemporary work of present times and it has given
him a huge platform to interact with artists of various other countries
working with a million other media and styles.
While on such artistic expeditions few of his rarest and silver lined shows
were - one held at the Toronto University where the University Museum
collected his work, another held at Mr. Paul Getti's home where
personalities like Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs appreciated his work.
To constantly create is his only job and the intellectual perquisites that
come along are an immense drive for him. He hopes to be able to show
something new and different every time; be it the subject or the medium.
He has begun experimenting with film making at this point hoping to
reach further depths of human existence. Art is not only for art but it also
is a way of life and he aspires to be able to involve more and more people
in this endeavor of his.
