The Plot Thickens
Season Five Begins
Arkansas Educational Television Network
From Programming
Dear Friends,
Program scheduling at AETN is a combination
of what’s being offered by PBS, local
productions ready for air, what is available from
other resources, what is bringing viewership
in similar television markets, viewer feedback
and professional expertise of our programming
staff. AETN programming staff consists of me,
Kathy Atkinson, Director of Programming, and
Ryan Gregory, Program Manager/Scheduling.
Feel free to contact either of us at anytime.
(Kathy at [email protected] or call 501682-4136; Ryan at [email protected] or call
501-682-4167)
This month, viewers will find several line-up
changes throughout the schedule. We hope
that you will give the changes a chance to fit
your viewing schedule and then give us your
feedback. To do that you may email us at
[email protected] or call AETN Viewer Services
Coordinator, Darbi Blencowe, at (501) 6824198 or toll free at 1-800-662-2386.
For quite some time, we have received
requests for “Masterpiece” to air earlier on
Sunday evenings. In order to accommodate an
8 o’clock start, we are moving “Doc Martin”
to Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. While expecting

to bring new viewers to this series, we are
hoping our current viewers will follow to
Thursday nights. “Doc Martin” has produced
six seasons of programming with season 7
expected in 2016.
British drama offerings will follow “Doc
Martin” at 9:00 p.m. including “A Mother’s
Son” (two 48-minute episodes), “Politician’s
Husband” (three 60-minute programs),
“Doctor Blake Mysteries” (ten 60-minute
episodes) and “Shetland” (eight 60-minute
programs).
The two documentary series “POV” and
“Independent Lens” will move from
Mondays to Sundays at 10:00 p.m. following
“Masterpiece.” In the 9 o’clock Monday slot
we will offer one-time only specials as well
as limited series including a look into the
life of the most notorious pirate of them all,
Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard.
Go with us on an epic journey through India
as we view the majestic scenery of the Ganges
River. Explore the genius of Marie Curie,
wife, mother, scientist and world-changer.
These stories and others will be available each
Monday night.
With “Doc Martin” moving to Thursday
nights, AETN music offerings, including
“Austin City Limits,” will move to Saturday
nights at 10 o’clock and continue until 5:00
a.m. Sunday mornings.
Below you will find a week-at-a-glance to help

Memorial gifts are placed in the AETN
Foundation Endowment or in the Jane
Krutz Volunteer Program Endowment.
The AETN Foundation Endowment exists
to help cover cost increases for purchasing
national programs, to help fund local
program production, and to help fund
expansion of new program and service
ventures, while safeguarding against any
potential decrease in operating funds.
The Jane Krutz Volunteer Program
Endowment was created in 2007 to honor
Ms. Jane’s many years of service to AETN.
A portion of the interest generated from
its investment is used to support volunteer
program trainings, communications,
refreshments, recognition and awards
for the many volunteers who come from
around the state to help the AETN
Foundation raise funds.
The AETN Foundation appreciates the
confidence these gifts represent in the
future of public television in Arkansas.

A bequest of your life insurance policy is an easy
way for you to make a gift to us.
It’s as easy as naming the AETN Foundation as
beneficiary of all or a portion of your policy on
your beneficiary designation form.
Your life insurance proceeds will help support
quality programming, and your estate will benefit
from an estate tax charitable deduction for the
value of the proceeds paid.

Dr. Steven Masley”
Sat., Jan. 17 at 3 p.m.
and Sun., Jan. 18 at
3 a.m. and 11 a.m.
In “30 Days to a Younger Heart”, Dr. Masley
shares the surprising
news that Metabolic
Syndrome, pre-diabetes, is the number one
cause of cardiovascular
disease. Since the term
metabolic syndrome is
new to most, the doctor describes how easy
it is to determine your
risk, and why so many
Americans have it. Dr.
Steven Masley and his
three simple steps have
helped thousands of
patients turn back the
clock…and reverse
the onset of aging and
disease.

“Exploring Arkansas”
If you ever wanted to learn how to fly-fish, but
didn’t exactly know how to go about it, we have the
solution! Join us for a free lesson from not just a
fly-fisherman, but a world champion fly-fishing gold
medalist! The Arkansas Living Treasure designation
by the Arkansas Arts Council, recognizes Arkansans
skilled in traditional craft, whose contributions over
a lifetime, have fostered significant impacts for their
art form. We’ll meet a recent recipient who is a log
master craftsman. And, the South Fork of the Spring
River near Salem has been designated by the state
as a Quality Smallmouth Stream. The results of our
float-fishing outing on that stream, backs up that
designation! Come along for the ride on “Exploring
Arkansas” Monday, January 5th at 6:30pm.
“22 Straight”
“22 Straight” is a “coming of age” film about the
Arkansas Razorbacks football team of the mid 1960s
that won 22 consecutive games, the longest winning
streak of any college team of the decade. The Hogs
captured a share of the 1964 mythical national
championship--the only one in the school’s storied
gridiron history.
“22 Straight” is produced by four-time Mid-America
Regional Emmy winning documentary filmmaker
Larry Foley, videography and editing by veteran Jim
Borden, narration by national play-by-play voice
Charlie Jones, and the musical score is provided by
Mid-America Regional Emmy winning composer Jim
Greeson. Join us on Thursday, January 1st, at 8:30pm
and again on Monday, January 5th, at 9:00pm.
“Men and Women of Distinction:
Mary Good”
To know Dr. Mary Lowe Good, or at least to begin
to know her, is to hear the words of one observer:
“Mary doesn’t just think outside the box. She doesn’t
even acknowledge the box is there.” It is that approach to science and technology – to life in general

of bees, has affected Arkansas. And finally, Backyard

“A Path Appears,” a special presentation of “Independent Lens”
Mondays, January 26-February 9, 2015 at 9 p.m.
“A Path Appears,” from the creative team behind
the groundbreaking series “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women
Worldwide,” follows author/reporters Nicholas
Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and celebrity activists Malin Akerman, Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow,
Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake
Lively, Eva Longoria, and Alfre Woodard to
Colombia, Haiti, Kenya, and throughout the
United States as they explore the roots of gender
inequality, the devastating impact of poverty and
the ripple effects that follow - including sex trafficking, teen pregnancy, gender-based violence,
and child slavery. In their travels, they meet with
inspiring activists who are creating effective solutions to gender-based oppression, transforming
lives and providing a roadmap for sustainable
future change.
“These are stories of a new generation of leaders
that offer new inspiration to bring about change,”
says WuDunn. “We want people to understand
that there are solutions. There are successes.”
Based on the most recent book by Kristof and
WuDunn entitled A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity, the three-part
series premieres as a special presentation of Independent Lens on three consecutive Monday
nights, January 26, February 2, and February 9,
2015 at 9 p.m.

Coming in February to AETN...
“The African Americans”
AETN is proud to present this six-hour series in
its entirety, Sunday, February 8 beginning at 11
a.m. “The African Americans” chronicles the full
sweep of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through
more than four centuries of remarkable historic
events up to the present. Presented and written by
Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the series
draws on some of America’s top historians and
primary sources, guiding viewers on an engaging
journey across two continents to shed new light
on the experience of being African American.
Among those interviewed are Kathleen Cleaver,
Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Congressman John
Lewis, civil rights activist Diane Nash and more.
