Arkansas Educational Television Network
From the Director
Dear Friends,
Recently, we ran across
this essay from Paula
Kerger, the CEO of PBS.
It talks of the changes
in the media business
and the increasing
importance of a sense of community. I thought it
might be of interest to our members as we move
forward. − Allen Weatherly
Today, content is delivered and consumed
through competing delivery platforms,
networks and screens. Amid this fragmentation,
there’s the undercurrent of individualism:
everyone wants to experience media in
their own way, on their own time. But, is this
really individualism? What will drive media
consumption in 2015 and beyond is the
opportunity to be a part of a larger community.
Human beings are social animals. From the
time our earliest ancestors walked the earth,
they gathered together and told stories around
the fire. More recently, we’ve gathered around
the television to share our collective experience.
For more than a half century, the box in the
living room has served as our electronic hearth.
It has given us a place to congregate during
moments of triumph and moments of tragedy.
Now, we’re gathering around iPads and Xboxes
and computer screens. But, people are still
driven by those same social instincts.
Bringing people together to build community
isn’t new, but it’s certainly a growing business.
Attendance at live conference events is
growing exponentially. Last year, more than
130,000 people attended ComicCon in San
Diego. Conferences “promoting women’s
empowerment are on the rise.” That’s because
people want to come together, to interact with
others who share their passion.
Social media is an important multiplier for this
community building. So here’s my prediction:
in 2015, forward-looking companies will
increasingly focus on building communities.
Mass media will return to its social roots.
Successful companies will leverage the power
of new platforms to build online and live
communities, bringing people together to
share in experiences and events. Amid all of
the choices in the media landscape, people will
still be driven by the human urge to participate
in something bigger than them, and the
companies that will flourish will build on this.
2015 will be the year of “community.”
Even if you have never talked with an attorney,
you probably already have an estate plan — and
it likely controls most of your liquid assets.
Your Automated Estate Plan
Important Questions
While many people think of a will as
their estate plan, a will is only part of
most plans. Half of all Americans do
not have a will. Creating a will may be
important to ensuring the security of
your loved ones after you are gone.
However, some of your assets will
automatically pass to your family.
Have you designated beneficiaries for
your accounts? How is your property
held? Even if you don’t have a will,
it’s important to be able to answer
these questions. We can help you
make sure the proper designations
are in place so that your plans are
carried out according to your wishes.
A Simple Form
Multiple Beneficiaries
It’s easy to designate beneficiaries for
retirement assets, investments and
life insurance by completing a simple
form. Many forms are available online.
You can also add a beneficiary to a
deed for land or a home that you own.
Keep in mind that there are many ways
you can pass on your assets outside
of a will. You can designate multiple
beneficiaries, taking care of your
family and the causes most important
to you. If you want to help further our
mission, please consider making the
AETN Foundation a beneficiary in an
amount or percentage of your choosing.
The following is a list of assets to
consider, as well as the form or method
by which they are commonly transferred.

“The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” is a six-part, six-hour
series that chronicles the full sweep of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the
African continent through five centuries of remarkable historic events right up to today – when America
has a black president, yet remains a nation deeply divided by race. The series explores the origins of the
people from Africa whose enslavement led to the creation of the African-American people, as well as the
multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives that AfricanAmericans have developed against unimaginable odds. All of these elements define black culture and
society in its extraordinarily rich and compelling diversity from slavery to freedom, from the plantation to
the White House.
Written and presented by professor Gates, and drawing on some of America’s top historians and heretofore untapped primary sources, the series will guide viewers on an engaging journey across 500 years and
two continents to shed new light on the experience of being an African-American. By highlighting the
tragedies, triumphs and contradictions of the black experience, viewers of “The African Americans: Many
Rivers to Cross” will learn that the African-American community, which the black abolitionist Martin R.
Delany described as “a nation within a nation,” has never been a uniform entity and that its members have
been actively debating their differences from their first days in this country. Viewers will also learn that the
road to freedom for blacks in America was not linear, but instead like the course of a river, full of loops and
eddies, slowing, and occasionally reversing the current of progress.
“Episode One: The Black Atlantic (1500-1800)
“The Black Atlantic” explores the truly global experiences that created the African-American people.
Beginning a full century before the first documented “20-and-odd” slaves who arrived at Jamestown,
Virginia, the episode portrays the earliest Africans,
both slave and free, who arrived on these shores.
But, the transatlantic slave trade would soon
become a vast empire connecting three continents.
Through stories of individuals caught in its web,
like a 10-year-old girl named Priscilla who was
transported from Sierra Leone to South Carolina
in the mid-18th century, we trace the emergence of
plantation slavery in the American South. The late
18th century saw a global explosion of freedom
movements, and The Black Atlantic examines what
that Era of Revolutions – American, French and
Haitian – would mean for African-Americans and
for slavery in America.
“Episode Two: The Age of Slavery (1800-1860)
“The Age of Slavery” illustrates how black lives
changed dramatically in the aftermath of the
American Revolution. For free black people in
places like Philadelphia, these years were a time of
tremendous opportunity. But, for most AfricanAmericans, this era represented a new nadir. King
Cotton fueled the rapid expansion of slavery into
new territories, and a Second Middle Passage
forcibly relocated African-Americans from the
Upper South into the Deep South. Yet, as slavery
intensified, so did resistance. From individual acts
to mass rebellions, African-Americans demonstrated their determination to undermine and
ultimately eradicate slavery in every state in the
nation. Courageous individuals, such as Harriet
Tubman, Richard Allen and Frederick Douglass,
played a crucial role in forcing the issue of slavery
to the forefront of national politics, helping to create the momentum that would eventually bring the
country to war.
“Episode Three: Into the Fire (1861-1896)”
“Into the Fire” examines the most tumultuous and
consequential period in African-American history:
the Civil War and the end of slavery, and Reconstruction’s thrilling but tragically brief “moment in
the sun.” From the beginning, African-Americans
were agents of their own liberation – forcing the
Union to confront the issue of slavery by fleeing the
plantations and taking up arms to serve with honor
in the United States Colored Troops. After Emancipation, African-Americans sought to realize the
promise of freedom – rebuilding families shattered
by slavery; demanding economic, political and
civil rights; even winning elected office. Just a few
years later, however, an intransigent South mounted
a swift and vicious campaign of terror to restore
white supremacy and roll back African-American
rights. Yet, the achievements of Reconstruction
would remain very much alive in the collective
memory of the African-American community.
“Episode Four: Making a Way Out of No Way
(1897-1940)”
“Making a Way Out of No Way” portrays the Jim
Crow era, when African-Americans struggled to
build their own worlds within the harsh, narrow
confines of segregation. At the turn of the 20th
century, a steady stream of African-Americans left
the South, fleeing the threat of racial violence, and
searching for better opportunities in the North
and the West. Leaders like Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Du
Bois, Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey
organized, offering vastly different strategies to
further black empowerment and equality. Yet
successful black institutions and individuals were
always at risk. At the same time, the ascendance of
black arts and culture showed that a community
with a strong identity and sense of pride was taking
hold in spite of Jim Crow. “The Harlem Renaissance” would not only redefine how America saw
African-Americans, but how African-Americans
saw themselves.
“Episode 5: Rise! (1940-1968)”
“Rise!” examines the long road to civil rights, when
the deep contradictions in American society finally
became unsustainable. Beginning in World War
II, African-Americans who helped fight fascism
abroad came home to face the same old racial
violence. But this time, mass media – from print
to radio and TV – broadcast that injustice to
the world, planting seeds of resistance. And, the
success of black entrepreneurs and entertainers
fueled African-American hopes and dreams. In
December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her
seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery,
Alabama, heralding the dawn of a new movement
of quiet resistance, with the Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. as its public face. Before long, masses of African-Americans practiced this nonviolent
approach at great personal risk to integrate public
schools, lunch counters and more. As the civil
rights movement scored one historic victory after
another, non-violence was still all too often met
with violence – until finally, enough was enough.
By 1968, King, the apostle of non-violence, would
be assassinated, unleashing a new call for “Black
Power” across the country.
“Episode Six: A More Perfect Union (1968-2013)”
After 1968, African-Americans set out to build a
bright new future on the foundation of the civil
rights movement’s victories, but a growing class
disparity threatened to split the black community
in two. As hundreds of African-Americans won
political office across the country, and the black
middle class made unprecedented progress,
larger economic and political forces isolated the
black urban poor in the inner cities, vulnerable to
new social ills and an epidemic of incarceration.
Yet, African-Americans of all backgrounds came
together to support Illinois’ Sen. Barack Obama
in his historic campaign for the presidency of the
United States. When he won in 2008, many hoped
that America had finally transcended race and
racism. By the time of his second victory, it was
clear that many issues, including true racial equality, remain to be resolved. Now we ask: How will
African-Americans help redefine the United States
in the years to come?

“Barnes and ...
A Conversation With Dr. M. Sanjayan”
As National Geographic and Passion Pictures bring
their new series “EARTH A New Wild” to PBS, we
introduce you to its host, Dr. M. Sanjayan, an American conservation scientist, writer and Emmy-nominated television news contributor. Steve Barnes and
Sanjayan discuss the new series that takes viewers to
the frontiers of where man and wildlife meet to explore how humans are inextricably woven into every
aspect of the planet’s natural systems and how saving
and restoring wild nature is key to preserving – and
enriching – future existence. Airs Wednesday, Feb. 4
at 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
“Agri Arkansas”
The soybean, often referred to as “The Miracle Bean”
because of its many uses, will be the focus of February's “Agri Arkansas.” The soybean crop generates
about $1.7 billion annually for Arkansas and is
grown on over 3 million acres. Also this month, Arkansas is the first state to grow edamame commercially. One of the fastest growing specialty foods in
the United States, edamame is a type of soybean that
makes for a great snack. Tune in Sundays at 1 p.m.
“Hoxie: The First Stand”
The story of one of the earliest, most important,
and least remembered school integration battles
in the south is told in “Hoxie: The First Stand.” In
“The Road to Little Rock”
“The Road to Little Rock” tells the
courageous story of one visionary judge
and nine determined teenagers who
demonstrated enduring positive human
qualities of courage, honor, determination
and responsibility in 1957 in Little Rock,
Arkansas. The story features a number of
never seen before interviews with members of the Little Rock Nine and Supreme
Court Justice Stephen Breyer telling the
story of events that led to the integration
of Central High School. The actions of
these individuals would change the course
of public school education and civil rights
in the United States. The documentary is
produced by Art Phillip of VideoArts Studios. Phillip has won numerous awards in
the director’s chair, including honors from
the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy®
Chapter and numerous others.
the summer of 1955, the school board of a small,
rural Arkansas town voluntarily desegregated its
schools. They were the first in the “Delta” South to
do so. This is a story of common men, disturbed
by the Jim Crow culture they had been raised in,
who saw a chance to do the right thing and did it at
great risk to themselves. It’s a story of black families
who, although they never sought integration, were
courageous and steadfast when it was thrust upon
them. It’s a story of community leaders who sought
to subdue the racism around them while others
were harnessing it for political gain. And, it’s a story
that had nearly been forgotten. The program is
produced by David Appleby, an independent filmmaker and professor at the University of Memphis.
“Hoxie: The First Stand” was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award in 2004 and the Alfred I.
duPont-Columbia Award in 2005. Airs Thursday,
Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
“Arkansans Ask: Governor Asa Hutchinson”
Join host Steve Barnes as he sits down with newly
elected Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson for the
first time. Viewers are invited to ask the governor
questions about state government. Questions may
be submitted by phone at 1-800-662-2386, via
email at paffairs@aetn. org, or live tweet at #ArAsk.
At the time of print, the broadcast date and time is

This five-part series takes a fresh look at
humankind’s relationship to the planet’s
wildest places and most fascinating species.
Dr. M. Sanjayan, a leading conservation scientist, takes viewers on a stunning
visual journey to explore how humans are
inextricably woven into every aspect of the
planet’s natural systems. The series features
spectacular natural history footage from
the most striking places on Earth, filming
encounters between wild animals and the
people who live and work with them. With
up-close looks at a range of species, from
giant pandas to humpback whales and
African lions to Arctic reindeer, Sanjayan reveals
that co-habitations
with animals can work
- and be mutually
beneficial.
“Home” – Wednesday, Feb. 4, 8:00 p.m.
This episode examines the relationship between humans and
large animals on a 21st-century planet and asks if wild nature
can still survive in what scientists now acknowledge is a new
age for the planet - the Age of Man. Sequences include chimpanzees with Jane Goodall in Tanzania; man-eating tigers in
the Sundarbans of Bangladesh; Giant panda in the highlands
of China; and a segment that envisions what New York City
would look like if nature took over completely.
“Plains” – Wednesday, Feb. 4, 9:00 p.m.
From the African plains to the American Midwest, this episode
explores wild grasslands - home to the greatest gathering places
of animal life on the planet, yet among the most endangered
places on Earth – requiring hoofs and jaws to thrive. The
program introduces Alan Savory and film sequences including
elephant conservation in South Africa; the first filmed shots of
rutting Saiga antelope in Russia; Norwegian locals regulating
the reindeer population in unique ways; and how Americans
are saving the country’s most-endangered mammal.
“Forests” – Wednesday, Feb. 11, 9:00 p.m.
Sanjayan travels deep into the western most Amazon to a
place scientists believe may be the most bio-diverse on earth,
still holding the secrets of un-contacted tribes. From here, he reveals a new understanding about humans’ relationship with the
forests of the world. Sequences include the first filmed scientific
trip to Ecuador’s Intangible Zone; unique behavior, filmed for
the first time, of wolves in the Great Bear Rainforest of British
Columbia; eagles and Iberian lynx in the cork forests of Europe,
and frightening elephant battles in the forests of Indonesia.
“Oceans” – Wednesday, Feb. 18, 9:00 p.m.
This episode introduces Jeremy Jackson, whose seminal
paper “The Rise of Slime” dramatically changed the way
scientists look at our relationship with the Earth’s oceans.
Sequences include a mass gathering of fearsome ocean predators at the most pristine coral atoll on earth; a shark birth and
migrations off the coast of Florida; coral gardeners in Australia; and futuristic offshore fish farms in Mexico.
“Water” – Wednesday, Feb. 25, 9:00 p.m.
Sanjayan explores humankind’s relationship with the Earth’s
most important resource, unraveling dramatic connections
between the pulse of fresh water and the health of the planet.
In North America, an epic kayak journey charting the flow
of the once-mighty Colorado River ends in an unlikely ray
of hope. Sequences include: the singing wells of Kenya; the
connection between AIDS and a small fish in Lake Malawi; a
clandestine visit to the biggest environmental disaster on the
planet; and a look at how hunters in America saved one of the
greatest gatherings of birds on the continent.
