Horses Unlimited, Inc.—Dedicated to the enhancement of therapeutic riding.
Editorial…
by Lauren Sternberg, Program Coordinator
The success of Horses Unlimited has resulted from
the willing volunteerism and the support from the community. Looking back through 18 or 19 years of HUI
newsletters I am overwhelmed with emotion. As I read
the articles and names of people who had the courage
and compassion to volunteer, I remember their boundless energy and desire to help. I wonder if they know
that their work lives on. That their contributions have
lead us to this point...many years later…as HUI begins
another season of lessons.
As this program ages and times change HUI has to
look for new volunteers. We realize that the youth in our
community are a great resource. Many are looking for
interesting ways to learn something new, plus volunteer
hours look good on a job resume or scholarship application. We train them and try to reward them. Young people have a tendency to move on with their lives, so we
give them our blessings and off they go.
We have adult volunteers who are worth their weight
in gold! They come to help, year after year, and without
their expertise and support HUI could not do much for
the special needs people in our program. It is amazing
what these people give of their time and energy.
Sometimes, even that, is finite!
We need volunteers to work with the students and to
help during fundraisers. Even more difficult to find are
individuals who will take on the responsibilities of the
Board of Directors. Right now, in the immediate sense,
we would like help on April 6 at the Plumas-Sierra
County Fairgrounds to help clean up during the
community work day. The Saturday after that, April 13,
will be HUI volunteer enrollment day. The accomplishments and joy that this program brings to all the
participants is the reward.

**These Fundraisers are basically the budget bones of the Horses Unlimited program. As they say; “All it
takes is money!” and the HUI program supports, not only the special needs students, but horses, equipment,
student scholarships, insurance, and much more. The HUI budget is sizeable...but, it is certainly worth all
the time, money and dedication to provide a therapeutic riding program for Plumas County and surrounding
Lassen and Sierra Counties. HUI needs and appreciates all the help provided by our donors and sponsors.
So, we provide these fun events for you to attend as well as get a first hand glimpse of the services
provided to this very special mountain population.

What are Horse Handlers...
The main responsibility of a horse handler is to control the lesson horse. Most riders who have horse
handlers can not fully control the animal. It is the horse
handler who must help in guiding, stopping and starting
without making the rider feel he is simply a passenger.
The rider must be
allowed to do as much as possible with the horse handler helping only when necessary.
The horse handler should hold the lead rope 6 to 8
inches from the horses head with the extra rope in the
free hand. Make sure the extra rope is folded in, not
wrapped around, the horse handler’s hand. Also, the
horse may have to be led from either side. When a
rider is being mounted, the horse handler must hold the
animal as still as possible, both at the ramp and in the
ring. The horse handler stands in front of the horse
holding him gently by the lead rope, or if necessary by
both sides of the bit. Be sure not to hang on the bit, or
hold too tightly – this could cause the horse to toss his
head or to move around. Light firm pressure should be
enough to keep him quiet and steady. A good horse
handler anticipates problems and acts in a way as to
avoid them.
The horse handler should walk just behind the
horses head and shoulder. Make sure to not hang on
the lead or try to drag the horse along.
Once the lesson has started, it is important that the
horse handler be alert and pays close attention and not
interfere with the riders learning or skill development.
Help the Instructor by keeping the student’s attention
on the instructor and on the lesson. The Instructor
should be addressing the rider by name.
Horse
handlers need to be sure the horses do not become
crowded together – if horses become too close together, remind the student to make small circles to help
put space between horses, or cut across the arena to a
less crowded place. During exercises, the horse handler should stand in front of the horse to prevent it from
moving. This is called ‘halt position’.
If a rider should fall, it is the horse handler’s responsibility to take care of the horse and follow directions or
emergency protocol. Emergency protocol/procedure
will be taught and practiced during training sessions
so horse handlers will automatically know what to do in
an emergency. HUI has an emergency procedure
binder with directions for numerous possible
emergencies. *

The Horse’s Hoof...
A horse's hoof is like a fingernail; it is constantly
growing and needs to be filed down periodically. It
takes 9-12 months to grow an entire hoof from the
coronary band to the ground. Horse’s feet need to be
trimmed and new shoes about every six weeks.
