CHENA COACHES BREAK DOWN chenaswimclub.ca • THE LMR CHAMPIONSHIPS • PROVINCIAL AA - A A A - SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS • SPEEDO WESTERN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS CHENA CHALLENGE PATRICK PARADIS - HEAD COACH REPORT WESTERNS Western Canadian Championships were held in Kamloops, BC from February 17th to the 20th and Chena sent 10 swimmers to compete against the best swimmers in Western Canada. Chena was represented by James Dergousoff, Natalia, Hernandez, Nicolas Hernandez, Robert Hill, Jeong-Wan Hong, Melissa Jung, Michael Piasecki, Jason Terrillon, Clarrissa Fong, and Ariana Momen. Chena swimmers swam to some impressive swims on their way to a 19th place finish. Among the highlights from the weekend were a number of scoring swims. Nicolas Hernandez swam to two 9th place finishes in the men’s 16 & under 800 & 1500 Freestyle. Melissa Jung placed 11th in the 50 Free and 9th in the 50 Backstroke in the women’s 16 & over category. Michael Piasecki swam to three scoring swims finishing 5th in the 200 Back, 8th in the 100 Back, and 15th in the 50 Back all in the men’s 17 & over category. Jason Terrillon also swam to three scoring swims with an 8th place finish in the 200 Fly, 6th in the 50 Fly, and a silver medal winning performance in the men’s 16 & under 100 Fly. Jason was not the only Chena medalist as James Dergousoff won gold in the men’s 16 & under 200 Breaststroke at only 14 years of age. James also placed 8th in the 100 Breast, and 15th in the 400 IM. In addition the all the tremendous scoring swims there were also a number of Chena club records broken over the weekend. Jeong-Wan Hong broke the senior girls’ club record in the 100 Breastroke. In the 13-14 boys age category, James Dergousoff broke three club records. James set a new mark in the 400 IM as well as lowering his own records in the 100 & 200 Breaststroke. In the senior boys category there were five records broken by three swimmers. Nicolas Hernandez bested the 800 & 1500 Free. In breaking the 800 Free record Nicolas erased a record that stood since 1987. Michael Piasecki lowered two of his own records in the 100 & 200 Backstroke while Jason Terrillon set a new record in the 100 Fly. In the final race of the weekend Melissa Jung won the consolation final in the women’s 16 & over 50 Backstroke and in the process she swam to a senior National qualifying time which has qualified her to swim at the 2011 World Championship Trials. 1 CHENA CHALLENGE HEAD COACH REPORT - continued BC AAA Provincial Championships Chena attended the BC AAA Provincial championships in Victoria, BC on the weekend of March 3rd to 6th and swam to an 8th place team finish. With 39 swimmers who qualified for the Provincial championship meet the club was extremely well represented. Among the highlights from the weekend were a number of top 8, medal winning, and record setting swims. The Youth National group was represented by 14 swimmers at the meet and they swam to a large number of outstanding swims. Chena’s senior girl’s relays swam to three top eight performances while the senior boy’s relays also swam to three top eight finish’s which included a bronze medal in the men’s 4x 200 Freestyle relay. The bronze medal winning team was represented by Michael Piasecki, Adam Holme, Jason Terrillon, and Nicolas Hernandez. The women’s side included a number of impressive swims. Natalia Hernandez swam a 6th, two sevenths, and an 8th place finish while Jeong-Wan Hong picked up 6th and 8th place finishes. Melissa Jung swam in 5 finals and finished with a 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th place swims. Melissa also won the bronze medal in the women’s 16-18 50 Freestyle. On the boy’s side Chena had a number of scoring swims as well as a number of medal winning swims. Jason Terrillon won a bronze medal in the men’s 16-18 200 Fly and added a 4th in the 100 Fly. Michael Piasecki had an 8th and two 7th place finishes in addition to his double gold medal performance in winning the men’s 16-18 100 & 200 Backstroke. In the men’s 15 year old age group Adam Holme finished the weekend with three 4th and two 5th place finishes to go along with his bronze medal performance in the 400 IM. Nicolas Hernandez swam to six scoring swims which included a 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th place finishes to go along with his Bronze medal in the 200 Back and a silver medal in the 400 Free. Rounding out the men’s 15 year old age group was Robert Hill who also swam to six scoring swims. Robert finished with a 6th and two 5th place swims to go along with three medals. Robert won a bronze medal in the 200 Breaststroke and two silvers with one coming in the 200 IM and the other in the 400 IM. In the men’s 14 year old age group James Dergousoff swam his way to six medal winning performances. James won a bronze medal in the 100 Fly and a silvers in the 200 Fly. James also accounted for four gold medals in winning the 100 & 200 Breaststroke as well as the 200 & 400 IM’s. In addition to the scoring and medal winning swims there were a number of records broken. Natalia Hernandez broke the senior girls’ club record in the 100 Breaststroke in the preliminaries and Jeong-Wan Hong went on to re-break it in the finals session. Nicolas Hernandez lowered his own record in the senior boys’ 1500 Free while Michael Piasecki lowered two of his records in the senior boys’ 100 & 200 Backstroke. In the boy’s 13-14 year old age group James Dergousoff broke five club records. James lowered three records he already held in the 100 Breaststroke, and the 200 & 400 IM. James also set new records in the 100 & 200 Fly. In what was one of the most exciting moments at the championship meet, James also broke the BC Provincial record in the boy’s 13-14 age group in the 400 IM by five one hundredths of a second. The previous record had stood since 1994. Congratulations James, Nicolas, Michael, Natalia, and Jeong-Wan for all of your record breaking swims. BC Senior Provincial Championships 12 Chena swimmers attended the BC Senior Provincial Championships March 11 & 12th at UBC. Chena had a number of finals swims as well as a number of scoring swims. Chena’s finalist included Jason Terrillon, Michael Piasecki, Morgen Lee, Jesse Lee, Melissa Jung, Jeong-Wan Hong, Adam Holme, Kaitlin Ho, Natalia Hernandez, and James Dergousoff. Among some of the highlight swims were Melissa Jung who was the only swimmer to make an A final at the meet which was attended by no less than 10 2008 Canadian Olympic Team members. Melissa finished 4th in the women’s 50 Freestyle. There were also two club records broken during the meet and both were broken by James Dergousoff. James lowered two records which he already owned in the boy’s 13-14 year old age group. James broke the 100 & 200 Breaststroke records and in doing so achieved his Senior National Qualifying standard in the 200 Breaststroke. James joins Melissa as the second Senior National Qualifier for Chena and two swimmers will represent Chena at the 2011 World Championship Trials being held in Victoria, BC from March 30th to April 2nd. 2 CHENA CHALLENGE PROVINCIAL 1 REPORT - AA’s and AAA’s Well, it has been a great past 3 months in the provincial group. AAs in Chilliwack was an amazing meet for the swimmers who competed. We swam over 90% personal best times and saw 5 new swimmers attain their AAA standard. Congratulations to each of you who attended the meet. Swimmers of the meet were Igor and Ximena, way to go guys. We are now at 14 of the 20 with AAA times, and those who haven’t quite got there are very close! This is a far feat from where we started in September. I am so proud of each of you for all of your hard work and dedication you have shown over the first half of the season. AAA champs was also very successful with many more personal best times, many swimmers making a final swims and a handful of medals ranging from gold to bronze. Swimmers of the meet were Bryan and Nicole, keep up the good work guys! Now that we have moved through our first phase of training with huge success, it is time to get back at it and move towards the next level…Age Group Nationals! The past couple of weeks and the next will see many changes in the Provincial 1 group. March is the time within our club that swimmers move from one group to the next. Movement is based on age and ability. Swimmers who have been selected to move up to the provincial 2 group are Roscoe, Bryan, Igor, Ariana and Sandra. Keep up the good work swimmers and we will all miss seeing you daily. With that, we will also have 5 new swimmers move into our group. I would like to welcome Victor, Michael, Juan-Carlos, Jasmine and Danielle into the provincial 1 group. I hope that our existing swimmers help make you feel at home in the group and teach you the group standards and expectations. Finally, I would like to thank each of you for being such amazing swimmers to coach. I have had a great past 7 months with you and will miss each of you very much while I am away on my maternity leave. Please continue with everything we have been working on and keep me updated on your progress. I will do my best to pop by for visits when I can, and can not wait for you guys to meet the newest addition to the Chena family. Kelly PROVINCIAL 2 REPORT - AA’s and AAA’s Hello Everyone What a year 2011 has been. We have had both coaches and pools break on us. Fortunately everything is back up and running, and in my case better than ever. The excitement off the deck did not distract us from achieving some pretty amazing swims this short course championship season. It all started at AA’s with some amazing swims from Marianna Uemura, Brianna Fong, Michelle Heeps and Nathan Schmidt. At AAA’s the Provincial 2 group was 85% best times, which is awesome and we had 3 new Age Group National qualifiers and 1 new Western National qualifier. Emily Goodwin, Chris Paproski, and Josh Carter all achieved their AGN times to go along with Sam Neilson who achieved hers in Kamloops earlier in the year. We also had some swimmers get really close to getting to those AGN and onto the next level. Mike Diering also broke a National Record in the 50 free in the S9 category in preparation for Pan American Games Trials which happen at the beginning of April. We have some big challenges and fun stuff planned for P2 in the next few months. I am really excited for the new swimmers joining the group and adding to the group dynamic heading into the long course season. If you would like make purchases online please contact your group coordinator and they will provide you with log-on cards, so you can hand them out to your family and friends CHENA CHALLENGE PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT AA and LMR Champs Well what an exciting year 2011 has been so far! We have had some amazing swimming, broken down pools, and more hospital visits then one would like, but CHENA is strong, and we have pulled through and are better than ever. I would like to first start by saying a huge congratulations to all our swimmers attending Spring Break training. You have all done a great job, and have created some fun moments and have been swimming great in the pool. Let’s carry the momentum through into the LC season and put together some amazing swims at our upcoming meets. We had a great finish to the short course season, with some incredible swims from all our swimmers. The AA Championships was attended by Aiden Joudrie and Laura Barakova, both hitting 100% best times through the entire meet. Aiden ended up destroying many of his AA qualifying standards, and is only a small step away from quite a few AAA times as well. Both did a great job in the pool, but were also strong leaders for Chena through the entire weekend. The LMR Championships was the next meet on the calendar, and the final SC meet for our swimmers. We had an exciting weekend of too many best times to count, countless finals swims, many visits to the podium, and a snow storm?!?! Despite the weather, our swimmers performed with incredible swims including first time finalist and medalist like, Siobhan Critchley, Juan Carlos Gomez, Laura Barakova, Keita Dueck, and Mahshid Hosseini. A big congratulations to Juan Carlos who achieved his AA qualifying time on the last day and in the last event of the weekend! We are half way through the season, and I can’t believe how much we have achieved so far. We still have a lot of work to do, but am very excited to see where we end up at the end of the year! Set the highest possible expectation on ourselves. You choose to be swimmers or coaches, not because it is easy, but because you are the toughest of the toughest and because you are part of creating Canadian swimming history in the next 12-18 months. What exciting times we all have in front of us. We keep hearing how great it was, how great we were! Let me tell you that we will soon hear the world talk on how great we are and how great of a swimming nation we are becoming. We are about to create the next wave of WOWs! 2010 was a great one for swimming in Canada. We produced great performances at all levels - from the Sr & Jr Pan-Pac’s, Commonwealth games, “B” Team, World Short Course, YOG, NACC, IPC Worlds, to hosting of the Open Water World Championships (Roberval). Canadian swimmers were firing from everywhere. We must be thankful to the swimmers and their coaches but also to everyone associated with the sport. Last year was by far our best year on network television. Over six different prime time shows covering the World Open Water and World Cup, the Pan-Pacs trials, the Pan-Pacs, the Commonwealth Games and the World Short Course Championships. CBC and SRC have been great partners throughout the years and a big part of our swimming family. We are again excited to have our World Trials in Victoria and this summer FINA World Championships covered on their networks. As we look forward to 2011, great opportunities on the international stage will arise with the FINA World Aquatic Championships (Shanghai, China), the World University Games (Shenzhen, China), the National “B” team Tour (France), the World Junior Swimming Championships (Lima, Peru), the Pan-Am’s and the Para-Pan-Am’s (Guadalajara, MEX) and the NACC in Mexico. Our quest for the ultimate performances cannot be deterred. The rest of our competitors are moving ahead and we need to move at a faster pace. Our willingness, in the next 18 months, to be more determined than ever, to out-coach and out train everyone, to help each other help the Nation will be our biggest strength. Canadian Coaches can only expect world leading performances if Canada is willing to be the world leader. It is our commitment to this generation of swimmers and to the future one’s. We are not only about setting dreams and creating an environment for daily excellence, but also we must expect actions that will set performances were 30 million Canadians will be proud to be part of this great Nation. The growth of our sport in our country is certainly squarely on our shoulders. I am very optimistic with all the possibilities ahead of us. If there is a top of a podium to be had, then let’s do whatever we need to do to achieve it. “MEDALS DO MATTER!” Sport is the greatest way to bring pride and hope to our people, to our Nation. All swimmers must have at least one Swim BC AAA time to be eligible for the meet. MEL ZAJAC INTERNATIONAL - May 27/28/29, 2011 UBC Aquatic Centre, Vancouver, BC Over the years, this prestigious and exciting international competition has highlighted several world-renowned swimmers such as Michael Phelps (USA), Annamay Pierse (CAN), Brent Hayden (CAN), Ryan Cochrane (CAN), George Bovel (TT), and Bronte Barratt (AUS), to name a few. Swimming Canada introduced the Canada Cup series in order to enhance the domestic competitive program and provide Canadian athletes with a competitive environment in which they can excel in their performance. It’s important for Swimming Canada to keep hosting World level, high caliber competitions at home in order to be successful on the World Stage. Swimmers must have meet qualifying standards. 6
