Chena fielded a team of 28 swimmers, who were accompanied by Head Coach Chad Webb and Provincial Group coach Kelly Kaye. 1 Once again, Chena was a presence on deck showing amazing TEAM SPIRIT, and in the pool with spectacular results. Adam Holme for winning (in addition to 6 gold and 2 silver medals) the Speedo High Point Award for the highest single FINA point swim for 12 & Under Boys. Adam also finished 2nd overall in mens points with 360. In the team points competition, Chena finished in 5th place overall. The girls team finished 3rd, while the boys team finished a Chena best 9th (with only 6 boys!). In individual events, Chena swimmers made finals 108 times. They won 19 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals. Our relay teams appeared on the podium six times and literally hundreds of best times were achieved over the course of the weekend. Justin Chan – who came to Chena last month – had to swim as Unattached due to SwimBC regulations won 7 medals (2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze for 230 points). Between Adam and Justin there was at least one Chena boy on the podium for every single 12 year-old boys event. Special mentions go to: Tim Zeng for finishing in 5th place in the 10 & Under Swim Stars competition. Charlotte Philpotts for winning (in addition to 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals) the TAS Regional Athlete Development Award for the VancouverSquamish Region. Charlotte also finished 2nd overall in womens points with 320. Talia Benson for winning the Speedo High Point Award for the highest single FINA point swim for 15 & Under Girls, and for achieving her Senior National qualifying 2 • time. As a result, she will be joining Sadie Matson, Julianne Brown, Amanda Payne, Taryne Landry and Laura Jensen at the 2008 Beijing Swimming Trials in Montreal from April 1 – 6. • • • Adam, 12 and under boys – 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 free, 100, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM. Michael Piasecki, 14 and under boys – 100, 400 free, 200 fly. Sadie Mattson, Senior Girls – 50, 100 free. Taryne Landry, Senior Girls – 100 back, 200 IM But the best part of the meet was the selection of a special event by each swimmer, when the rest of the team came out in force to cheer them from the starting gun to the final touch. What a great way to support each other and bring out the best in every Chena athlete! Also, congratulations to Santiago Morales for achieving his first Age Group National time, swimming 17.27.23 in the 1500 free. The Senior Girls 4 x 200 Relay team (Talia, Sadie, Taryne and Julianne) won the gold medal in a new Provincial Record time of 8:21.28. The Senior Girls 4 x 50 Relay team (Sadie, Talia, Taryne and Amanda) also won gold, setting another Provincial Record of 1:46.24, breaking the previous record set by Hyack in 1981! Well done to everyone for finishing off the 2007/08 Short Course season in grand style. GO CHENA! Russ Benson and Steve Holm As a result Chena now holds 8 Provincial Relay Records! New Chena Club records were also set (or re-set) by: • Charlotte, 12 and under girls – 50, 200 free, 200 back, 100, 200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM. 3 HEAD COACH REPORT CHENA LONG COURSE MEET SCHEDULE 2008 Date Meet Location Olympic Trials CDSC Meet Montreal April 12 CDSC UBC April 27 PASS Meet May 3-4 West Coast Open May 10 -11 LMR Meet May 17-18 Hyack May 30 – June 1 June 7-8 Mel Zajac Dynamo Invit AAs LCM Champs AAAs RA North Shore Richmond All Groups – LMR times TBA LMR to AA qualifiers New AAA Westqualifiers minster UBC Western Qualifiers Burnaby AA and lower Langley AA qualifiers April 1-6 April 12-13 June 20-22 July 3-7 July 11-13 Aug 9-17 SWAD Meet Senior Nationals Age Group Nationals Olympics Aug 29-Sept 6 Paralympics July 17-20 July 24-28 UBC What an exciting end to the Short Course season! I have never been so busy at a Provincial Championships with so many of our swimmers making second swims – IT WAS AMAZING !!! I have to say there were so many great swims that it is tough to put any one or two that stood up in a write-up. Who is Going? 6 from Chena All groups – LMR times Juniors, all younger swimmers PD and Juniors With the National Group fresh out of a tough and tiring Western Championships, they had to mentally ready themselves for a hard meet at Provincials. They did just that. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend, which will be around for as long as the last record stood, was the girls’ 15 – 17 4 x 50 free relay which broke a 27 year old Provincial record that was impressive even by today’s standards. Amanda Payne, Sadie Mattson, Talia Benson and Taryne Landry set a new record that will be around for a while. Richmond AAA qualifiers Victoria SWAD only Winnipeg Sr Nats Standards Calgary AG Nat Standards Beijing, China Beijing, China Julianne Brown joined Taryne, Amanda and Sadie on the 4x 200 free relay which also broke the Provincial record giving us EVERY short course Provincial relay record in freestyle. We will now set our eyes on breaking the Canadian Record in 4 x100 free at Trials – This is a real possibility with the hype of the meet and how close the girls are to it already. The girls will have to go 3:52.85 Long Course to do it, and they are not far off….. TBAafter Trials TBA after Trials 4 I have to mention a few swimmers and swims as Santiago Morales had the meet of a lifetime taking off over 95 seconds in total from only 6 swims. He was the National Group’s Swimmer of the Meet. Two National Group swimmers were selected for the Team BC dual meet in April; congrats Michael Piasecki and Jacqueline Siu, who will join Adam Holme and Jeong Wan. These swimmers will be traveling to Lethbridge, Alberta in April to compete against an All Star Alberta provincial team. Alysha Harris had an amazing 200 back taking off over 7 seconds and put herself only 2 seconds away from a Senior National Standard. Chad Webb, [email protected] PROVINCIAL GROUP Congratulations to all the swimmers who were at AAAs, AAs, LMR champs and all the other meets. We have some very talented swimmers throughout our club, and that is a testament to the coaching staff. We have been working together with the swimmers and parents (thanks for your great support!) to make Chena the greatest club in Canada. We keep having swimmers from other clubs wishing to join us because of the strong presence we have at every level. 20 Club records broken at AAA provincials from swimmers in our group alone! ALL 12 AND UNDER BOYS RECORDS WERE BROKEN!! • Adam Holme 100/200/400/800/1500FR 100/200 BK 200/400 IM • Justin Chan 100/200 fl 100/200 br 50 fr • Charlotte Phillpotts 50fr/200fr/200bk/200br/200 im/ 400 im Chad Webb [email protected] YOUTH NATIONAL GROUP Talia Benson now joins Laura Jensen, Julianne Brown, Amanda Payne, Sadie Mattson and Taryne Landry as they get ready for Olympic trials the first week of April in Montreal. Congrats to Talia for a superb 100 free and a very exciting 400 free at AAAs (Provincials). First off, congratulations to both Charlotte and Adam for receiving Swim BC awards for their performances at AAA provincials. Six swimmers at Olympic trials is amazing considering the size of our club of only 100 swimmers! 5 At AAs our group showed strong performances in the morning swims, which resulted in 85% of swims getting through to finals. Swimmers of the Meet were Chris Paproski, and Monika Mahmutovic. Chris also attained his 10 and under AAA qualification time!!! Charlotte received the Regional Overall High Point Award (just edging out Adam by one point!!), and Adam received the 12 and Under Swim of the Meet Award for his 1500 fr performance. Both of these swimmers had exceptional meets with each swimmer swimming 8/9 best times!! Great job guys, each of you has worked very hard to accomplish this; it is nice to see your dedication to swimming show in your performance! The following weekend 3 swimmers from our group took part in the BC Winter Games. All three swimmers have come back from the meet saying it was an experience like no other, and that it was a lot of fun. If you see Kei Yamamoto, Monika Mahmutovic or Alex Gomez around, take the time to ask them to tell you some stories about their experience, I think you will find it very inspiring. On top of having a lot of fun, Alex also came home with more than a handful of medals and personal best times, WAY TO GO ALEX!! At AAA Provincials our group swam 92% best times, and had over 40 final swims. I would like to say congrats to Janine Koo for stepping up at her first AAA championship, swimming 100% best times, and making 6 finals - what an accomplishment Janine! Congrats! It has been a very exciting past 4 weeks of swimming for our group. Starting with LMR Champs all the way through to AAA Provincials, no matter what level our swimmers swam at they sure kicked some butt!! Clarrissa Fong and Tyler Benson where chosen Swimmers of the Meet for LMR Champs; both swam a very high percentage of best times at the meet, and qualified for AA champs!! Our group sent 9 swimmers to AAA Provincials, and had 7 of the 9 come home with medals. Medalists were: Janine, Charlotte, Adam, Justin, Melissa, Jeong wan and Stefanie PLUS, our relay-only swimmers, Brianna and Clarrissa. After their strong performances at Provincials, each of the named swimmers above now ranks top 10 in the country for their strong events, some are even ranked first!! Again, results like this cannot happen without hard work and dedication. I am very proud of each of you for your accomplishments so far this year, and look forward to an even stronger Long Course Season. Also, congratulations to Teo Penkov for qualifying for AAs! Finally, I would like to mention the three Provincial Group swimmers selected for the Team BC dual meet in April: Congrats 6 Provincials, and an invitation to Langley for PD and Junior groups in 10 and Under. Adam (200 bk), Jeong wan (200 br) and Melissa (alternate sprint free). These swimmers will be traveling to Lethbridge (Alberta) in April to compete against an All Star Alberta Provincial Team. The trip will also provide the swimmers with some outof-water seminars, and in-water video analysis, and should be a very good learning and racing experience for each of them!! GREAT SWIMMING EVERYBODY!! Our hosting competition, which was an LMR trial, went really well and everyone made best times. A few names to mention would be: Joshua and Sandra - 50 free, 200 IM; Marianna, Georgina, and Sandra - 200 breast; Georgina - 200 IM; and Tim - 200 IM (AAA). In AA Provincials, Laura and Brandon made best times in 100 and 200 breast, and Brandon was in the finals for 200 breast and won the bronze medal. AAA Provincials, Tim got second place in 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back, and broke the team record in 50 free which was held by Sam Horton. Tim’s time was 31:02. Kelly Kaye [email protected] PS: Even with a lot of good swimming so far this year, I still think we need to work harder at under-water kick!!!! ☺ The Junior Group didn’t have as many activities, but in the invitation from Langley they showed their enthusiasm and their drive to compete. In reality they didn't look like a Junior Group but more like mature and strong swimmers: Marianna (PD), Martina, Alice, Hanah, Emma, Niki, Nick, Steve, Juan Carlos, and Nathan nine years old (PD) who, with a very, very brave PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND JUNIOR GROUPS (WG POOL) February was an extremely busy month. We had LMR, AA Provincials, AAA 7 attitude swam 12 events because of a computer mistake which automatically placed him 4 times in each of his events - his decision was to swim in all the extra events. Thanks to Victoria Philpotts who helped in organizing my swimmers and getting them ready for their heats. I was so busy that day that I would never have managed to make it alone. We try our hardest to cheer each and every swimmer on, but we need the rest of you to help support your team mates. Let’s get out there and cheer each other on, congratulate each other for great swims, and support each other through any disappointments. We are a team, so let’s work together to make every meet successful for everyone! Congratulations to everyone! I want to make a small note, that our little Ryan had surgery and is in recovery and is doing very well. We would like to wish him all the best and hope that he will be back in practice in a few weeks. Ignacio Alvarez [email protected] Junior swimmers, please remember for all future meets to talk to your coach before and after every race. Remember, you need to take responsibility for your success and seeing your coach is part of that. One of the most important parts of swimming is listening and learning from what we tell you. _______________________________________ JUNIOR GROUP (RA POOL) I was really impressed by you all at the Langley Swim Meet - great job team! Congratulations to Anika Fernandez, Melina Laird, Natalie Kennedy, Alex Lee, Martina Villa and Dylan Paterson. Special congratulations to Jade Dekker for having a great first swim meet! Alex Minaev [email protected] 8 PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT GROUP (RA POOL) NEWS FROM THE BOD (BOARD OF DIRECTORS) Congrats to Vicki and Alex who attended the Short Course Provincial Championships last weekend in Victoria. At this stage to be able to swim at such a meet is our goal and I would like to see more of you racing at the next Provincials. Many of you work hard to get best times, and I am sure it will pay off soon. I am very happy to see the great progress made by Rebecca, Rojin, Rachel, Sarah and Gabriel. There really is not much to add to the reports from the coaches – clearly they are doing a great job as are the swimmers, who really are listening, trying and thus improving – sometimes at an amazing rate. Thanks to all and for parent volunteers for helping out as much as you do – we could not do it without you! We would also like to invite parents to join the BOD at this point in time, before next year when most of those parents presently on the BOD will be retiring. A lot easier to pass the baton after shadowing and seeing what is involved than ‘cold turkey’. Here’s to a great Long Course Season! Alice Benson, Steve Holme, Tim Philpotts, Julian Porritt, Simon Russell At the end of February we broke down each stroke, working on drills, turns, and speed for each stroke. We are now focusing on distance swimming, raising our volume to 4.5 to 5.0 kilometers per practice. _______________________________________ SWIMMER(S) OF THE MONTH It was impossible to choose one single Swimmer of the Month. Rather, each of the coaches’ reports, above, highlight a number of swimmers including Swimmers of the Meet. This is appropriate as, although swimming on the surface may appear to be an individual sport it is not – it is a team sport. As far as your coaches and, particularly your parents are concerned, you are all Swimmers of the Month! We had a team mini meet on March 08 instead of practice at Ron Andrews pool. Congrats to all swimmers – especially those who had not previously competed in the 400 m distance event. And thanks to all parents who helped out. Coach Alex [email protected] 9 MEMORIES – CHENA’S MEET AT HARRY JEROME _ ____________________________________ 10 AQUATICS FOR ARTHRITIS The swimmers had a lot of fun following the lead of National Team swimmers such as Brent Hayden and Anna Mae Pierce, and tried many new and previously unheard of strokes such as backward swimming and barrel rolls while completing their lengths. These Chena swimmers raised approximately $2,000 for arthritis research. We are still waiting for final results from Swim BC and the Arthritis association with respect to individual swimmer sponsorships raised. On January 19, several Chena Swimmers participated in the Aquatics for Arthritis Relay at the Vancouver Aquatics Centre. The event is geared to raise funds and awareness of the beneficial effects of aquatic sports for Arthritis. Swimmers teamed up in groups of four to see how many lengths they could do in a 15-minute period. CHENA participating swimmers: Anna Gomez, Julianne Brown, Mayeli Alvares, Kaitlyn Ho, Adam Holme, Amanda Payne, Stefanie Chapman, Taryne Landry, Talia Benson. Thanks to the participants, their parents and their sponsors for assisting in making Chena’s first participation in this annual event a success. We’re hoping to grow our participation in the future. Ernie Payne EDITOR’S CORNER It was very hard, this issue, choosing which photographs to include – so sorry I could not include them all but I got over 500 to choose from! Many thanks to those who contributed photographs from the many events our swimmers competed successfully in over the last few weeks. And many thanks to our swimmers and coaches whose many successes (not just medals, best times, effort) we celebrate in this issue. Receiving the award for the 2nd most number of lengths by th e”B” team are three of our CHENA team swimmers: Mayeli Alvarez, Anna Gomez, and Amanda Payne shown with National Team Swimmers Brent Hayden and Annamay Pierse and the new Executive Director of Swim BC, Mark Schuett. It is hard to believe that it is now March and we are into Long Course season. But the longer days and warmer temperatures are most welcome. And as it gets hotter our 11 SPONSORS swimmers and coaches are also turning up the heat - the 2007/2008 season is already a great success for Chena, and the best is yet to come! We gratefully support from: Peter Chapman; 604-904-4005; [email protected] acknowledge continuing North Vancouver Recreation Commission, for supporting CHENA. Special thanks to the staff at William Griffin, Harry Jerome, and Ron Andrews Pools. Province of British Columbia Direct Access Program, for financial support.
